TiO 2 @NH 2 -MIL-125, composite photocatalysts with close interfacial contact between NH 2 -MIL-125 and TiO 2 , were successfully synthesized via an in-situ solvothermal method for formaldehyde (HCHO) removal under UV irradiation. Samples were characterized by using a variety of analytical techniques. The results showed that TiO 2 particles were highly dispersed on the surface of NH 2 -MIL-125, and there was a strong electronic interaction (Ti-N-C) between elements of the composite. TiO 2 @NH 2 -MIL-125 exhibited significantly enhanced photocatalytic performance for HCHO removal compared to pure TiO 2 and NH 2 -MIL-125 that was ascribed to the synergistic combination of high adsorption capacity of NH 2 -MIL-125, high dispersion of TiO 2 and efficient interfacial charge transfer between TiO 2 and NH 2 -MIL-125. Furthermore, the HCHO removal rate over the composite remained at 90% after 122 h of continuous photocatalytic reaction, indicating the high stability of the catalyst. This work provides new insights that will be helpful in the further development of photocatalysts for indoor air purification.

A “separation-recovery-purification” strategy inspired by glass sponges is proposed. • The composite membrane achieves an oil/water separation efficiency of over 97.7%. • The composite membrane attains over 97% recovery efficiency for noble metal ions. • Recycled membranes gain over 97% degradation efficiency for dyes and antibiotics. • The recycled membranes display excellent antibacterial capacity. Existing MXene-based composite materials face significant challenges in combining water purification with precious metal recovery. For complex wastewater systems containing oil–water emulsions, precious metal ions, and organic dyes, there is an urgent need to develop efficient and multifunctional MXene-based composite membranes to enhance their applicability in complex aquatic environments. In this study, MXene nanosheets and NH 2 -MIL-125 were assembled into MXene/NH 2 -MIL-125 composite membranes via vacuum-assisted filtration. The optimized composite membranes exhibited excellent hydrophilicity and underwater superoleophobicity, achieving oil–water separation efficiencies exceeding 97.7% in various emulsion systems. In addition, the membranes enabled the selective recovery of Ag + , Pd 2+ , and Au 3+ ions, with recovery efficiencies above 97% for all three ions and maximum adsorption capacities of 887.86, 845.46, and 806.57 mg·g −1 , respectively. After metal recovery, the resulting M-3@Ag membrane exhibited markedly enhanced photocatalytic performance and excellent antibacterial activity. During cyclic purification tests, the composite membrane successfully implemented an integrated “separation–recovery–purification” strategy. Overall, this work provides a green and efficient approach for the treatment of complex wastewater and the sustainable recovery of precious metal resources, showing great potential for practical applications.

The threat of Pb(II) and Cd(II) in water demands advanced adsorbents. While metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have demonstrated great potential for heavy metal ions adsorption, their microporous nature and powdery form limit practicality. Thus, we engineered a sodium alginate composite aerogel bead loaded with salicylic acid-modified defective NH 2 -MIL-125, for the efficient removal of Pb(II) and Cd(II) from aqueous solutions. By adjusting the solvent volume ratio to regulate the crystal morphology and introducing salicylic acid as a fragmented ligand to compete with NH 2 -BDC to coordinate with Ti-oxo clusters, a defective Ti-MOFs with mesoporous structure (pore size increased from 2.30 to 8.93 nm) and abundant active sites was successfully developed. Further integration with sodium alginate formed millimeter-scale aerogel beads, improving the reusability and enhancing adsorption performance: the maximum adsorption capacities of 428.01 mg g −1 for Pb(II) and 179.67 mg g −1 for Cd(II), respectively. The adsorption process, described by the pseudo-second-order kinetic and Sips isotherm models, is driven by multilayer chemical adsorption via electrostatic attraction, ion exchange and coordination reactions with −COOH, −NH 2 and −OH groups. The beads also exhibit excellent selectivity and reusability, maintaining high efficiency of ∼97 % for Pb(II) over 5 cycles. This work provides a promising strategy for designing high-performance and recyclable adsorbents for adsorbing heavy metal ions from water.

Developing new adsorbents with hierarchical pore and unsaturated adsorption sites are highly demanded to achieve rapid adsorption rate and good adsorption selectivity in purifying organic wastewater. We here reported a new Quasi-MIL-125(Ti) synthesized at 340 °C under air atmosphere and considered as a high-efficiency adsorbent for capturing cationic dyes. The morphology of the material is characterized by XRD, SEM, TEM, etc. and the adsorption performance of Quasi-MIL-125(Ti) was systematically studied. Remarkably, it takes only 1 min to rapidly remove 20 mg L -1 MB or NR with 1 g L -1 Quasi-MIL-125(Ti), which is far superior to the previously reported materials. Adsorption isotherm shows that dyes adsorption on Quasi-MIL-125(Ti) follow a Langmuir adsorption isotherm model. The experimental maximum adsorption capacities were 109.3 mg g -1 for MB and 151.1 mg g -1 for NR, respectively. The hierarchical pores facilitate the diffusion and co-adsorption of different dye molecules. Adsorption mechanism reveals that the strong electrostatic attraction originated from the unsaturated Ti sites in Quasi-MIL-125(Ti) contributes to the ultra-fast adsorption behavior during cationic dyes chemisorption process. This study not only provides a promising prospect for the synthetic strategy of super-adsorbents, but also provides reference and theoretical guidance for practical dye wastewater treatment.

Constructing stable, efficient, and affordable visible-light-driven catalysts is a promising technique to remediate water pollution from released antibiotics. In this research, etched Bi@MIL-125 composites were manufactured using a simple hydrothermal method, and their photocatalytic efficacy was tested using tetracycline (TC) as the target contaminant. Morphological analyses indicated that Bi nanoparticles (NPs) were consistently wrapped around the MIL-125 surface, introducing mesoporous structures in MIL-125 by Bi etching. Among different mass ratios (Bi: MIL-125), the Bi@MIL-125 sample with a 1:1 mass ratio (BM100) showed the greatest photodegradation rate (98.6 %) of TC upon visible light illumination. The BM100 exhibited the greatest apparent deterioration rate constant for TC (0.036 min −1 ), 74 times higher than that of pristine MIL-125. The absorption enhancement of Bi@MIL-125 in the visible range was ascribed to the surface plasmon resonance effect of Bi NPs. The mesoporous structure of Bi@MIL-125 provided channels through which TC entered the composite's interior, and the confined space enabled more opportunities for the interaction of •O 2 – and h + active species and TC pollutant molecules. In addition, liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry was used to determine potential intermediates of the photodegradation reaction of TC and BM100, and two distinct degradation routes were hypothesized. Ultimately, combining ECOSAR predictions with zebrafish behavioral tests to assess the toxicity changes in degradation processes and the acute and chronic toxic effects on aquatic animals, the inhibition of the locomotive behavior of zebrafish was significantly decreased after 120 min of photocatalytic degradation, suggesting that the BM100 sample can effectively degrade TC and detoxify the aquatic environment.

A polyhedral MIL-125-NH2@Pd nanoparticle with light-responsive oxidase-like activity was synthesized through a simple solvothermal method and was characterized by field emission scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, X-ray powder diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, Brunauer–Emmett–Teller analysis, etc. MIL-125-NH2@Pd can catalyze the oxidation of 3,3′,5,5′-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) under light radiation without H2O2, indicating its intrinsic light-responsive oxidase-like characteristic. MIL-125-NH2@Pd shows a superior catalytic activity and higher affinity to TMB, compared to MIL-125-NH2, owing to the presence of homogenously distributed palladium (Pd) nanoparticles. The results of the mechanism study indicate the existence of ˙O2− and electron holes during the catalytic reaction of MIL-125-NH2@Pd. Furthermore, based on the excellent light-responsive oxidase-like activity and specific recognition capacity for casein phosphopeptides (CPP) of titanium ions (Ti4+) in MIL-125-NH2@Pd, a simple colorimetric sensing platform was developed for the determination of CPP in a linear range of 10–100 μg mL−1 with a limit of detection as low as 2.9 μg mL−1. Finally, the developed method was successfully employed in the sensitive and selective detection of CPP in spiked rabbit and rat plasma samples. This study may provide a reliable and highly efficient strategy to realize the excitation-responsive sensing applications of materials.

Surgical resection remains the primary treatment modality for bone tumors. However, it is prone to local bone defects and tumor recurrence. Therefore, there is an urgent need for multifunctional biomaterials that combine tumor treatment and bone repair after bone tumor surgery. Herein, a chitosan composite scaffold (CS/DOX@Ti-MOF) was designed for both tumor therapy and bone repair. Among them, the amino-functionalized Ti-based metal-organic framework (NH 2 -MIL-125 (Ti), Ti-MOF) has a high specific surface area of 1116 m 2 /g and excellent biocompatibility, and promotes osteogenic differentiation. The doxorubicin (DOX) loading capacity of Ti-MOF was 322 ± 21 mg/g, and DOX@Ti-MOF has perfect antitumor activity. Furthermore, the incorporation of DOX@Ti-MOF improved the physical and mechanical properties of the composite scaffolds, making the scaffold surface rough and favorable for cells to attach. CS/DOX@Ti-MOF retains the unique properties of each component. It responds to the release of DOX in the tumor microenvironment to remove residual tumor cells, followed by providing a site for cell attachment, proliferation, and differentiation. This promotes bone repair and achieves the sequential treatment of postoperative bone tumors. Overall, CS/DOX@Ti-MOF may be a promising substitute for postoperative bone tumor clearance and bone defect repair. It also provides a possible strategy for postoperative bone tumor treatment.

Heterojunction is considered as very promising material for various applications in photocatalysis. Herein, an efficient heterojunction photocatalyst N/Zn–TiO 2 @NH 2 -MIL-125 was successfully synthesized for photo-degradation organic oxidation by biological-templated method. The electron–hole pairs can be separated in space more efficiently because of heterojunction structure. Systematical analyses of spectroscopy and microscopy measurements revealed that N/Zn–TiO 2 @NH 2 -MIL-125 heterojunction materials exhibited hierarchical porous structure with high surface area of 366.02 m 2 g −1 and outstanding optical properties. Photocatalytic activity was investigated by degradating of rhodamine B (1000 µM) under visible-light irradiation. The N/Zn–TiO 2 @NH 2 -MIL-125 showed enhanced photocatalytic activity for RhB degradation, which is respectively about 1.81 and 1.97 times higher than that of the pristine N/Zn–TiO 2 and NH 2 -MIL-125. Various advanced spectroscopic characterizations were applied including photoluminescence, Mott–Schottky curves and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. A possible mechanism of enhanced photocatalytic oxidation activity for N/Zn–TiO 2 @NH 2 -MIL-125 composite under visible light irradiation was discussed.

Designing efficient visible light-driven photocatalytic antimicrobial agents presents significant challenges. In this study, S-shaped core–shell NH 2 -MIL-125/TiO 2 (NT-x) heterojunctions were constructed by simple in situ solvothermal method, as photocatalytic antimicrobial agents for efficient bactericidal use under visible light. Notably, 99.99% inhibition was achieved for both Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus at low concentrations (0.02 and 0.035 mg mL −1 , respectively) after exposure to simulated sunlight for 20 min. Reasonable energy band configuration and built-in electric field of this structure provided improved photogenerated carrier transfer paths as well as enhanced separation and transport efficiency. Moreover, the core–shell structure enhanced the interaction between NH 2 -MIL-125 and TiO 2 , increased the total number of reactive sites, and promoted the efficient generation of reactive oxygen species. Finally, possible mechanisms for the inactivation of bacteria were discussed. This research offers new perspectives for the advancement of advanced metal–organic framework-based photocatalysts with antibacterial activity under visible light. Graphical abstract

Supports play a key role in the performance of platinum-based catalysts. In this work, using NH 2 -MIL-125 as the precursor, mixed-phase TiO 2 coated by nitrogen-doped carbon (TiO 2 @NC) is successfully prepared, and used to support platinum (Pt/TiO 2 @NC) for methanol oxidation reaction. In 0.5 M H 2 SO 4 solution containing 0.5 M CH 3 OH, the area specific activity of Pt/TiO 2 @NC catalyst (1.186 mA cm -2 Pt) is 4.4 times that of commercial Pt/C (0.272 mA cm -2 Pt). At a fixed potential of 0.15 V (vs. Hg/Hg 2 SO 4 ), the current density of Pt/TiO 2 @NC is still 3.6 times that of Pt/C after 3600 s of polarization. Meanwhile, Pt/TiO 2 @NC has also a low tafel slope, a large exchange current density and a high charge transfer coefficient. A large number of Ti-OH groups can alleviate poisoning effect caused by the produced "CO ads " intermediate during methanol oxidation reaction. Nitrogen-doped carbon not only improves the conductivity of TiO 2 support, but provides strong anchor sites for the nucleation of Pt nanoparticles , resulting in an enhanced catalytic activity of Pt/TiO 2 @NC.

The fabrication of single atoms on MIL-125(Ti) for photocatalytic ammonia synthesis. • SAs modulate the local electronic structure for charge mobility and separated active site. • The favorable N 2 activation and protons supply optimizes the reduction kinetics. • Magnetic field-induced spin flipping to charge utilization further boost the activity. Photocatalytic nitrogen fixation is an attractive alternative to the energy-intensive traditional ammonia synthesis. However, the major challenge is that most photocatalysts are limited by their low charge mobility, insufficient molecules activation and sluggish reaction kinetics. Herein, we integrated single atoms (Co, Fe, Ni) on MIL-125(Ti) functionalized with sulfhydryl (MIL-125(SH) 2 , MTS) to afford Co-MTS, Fe-MTS and Ni-MTS for photocatalytic nitrogen reduction. Through uniformly dispersed SAs (single atoms) coordinated with O and S atom, such intimate interaction and charge redistribution can efficiently regulate the unsaturated Ti sites for N 2 adsorption and activation. Moreover, the introduced SAs species also serve as separated active center for water oxidation to promote H 2 O adsorption and protons release, kinetically optimizing protons supply and energy barrier of rate rate-determining step for N 2 hydrogeneration. Benefited from the spatially separated metal node-SAs dual sites and favorable reaction energy barrier, the optimized Ni-MTS sample shows an ammonia yield rate of 72.6 μmol·g −1 ·h −1 with an apparent quantum efficiency of 0.49% at 400 nm. This can be further enhanced by magnetic field-induced spin flipping contributed to charge utilization. This work would inspire the development of other high-efficiency single atom/MOFs that combining molecular activation and protons supply for photocatalysis.

More efficient N 2 activation and carrier dynamics are needed for effective solar-driven ammonia synthesis. Herein, a heterojunction photocatalyst (Co-ZnO/MIL-125(SH) 2 ) was constructed by using MIL-125(Ti) with sulfhydryl functionalization and Co-doped ZnO for photocatalytic nitrogen fixation. A series of characterization reveal that the formation of S-scheme charge transfer greatly enhances interfacial charge separation for more available carriers. The presence of Ti 3 + sites in MIL-125(SH) 2 also facilitates the adsorption and activation of N 2 , effectively leveraging the photogenerated electrons for N 2 conversion. Moreover, the introduction of Co-ZnO increases the hydrophilicity of the catalytic surface. This allows more water molecules to be oxidized by photogenerated holes to release H + for the N 2 hydrogeneration process. As a result, a high photocatalytic ammonia production rate of 50.8 μmol•g −1 •h −1 is achieved under visible light irradiation. This study presents an insight into engineering S-scheme heterojunction composite by coupling molecular coordinate activation and improved protons supply for efficient photocatalytic nitrogen fixation.
