Excessive phosphorus (P) in eutrophic water induces cyanobacterial blooms that aggravate the burden of in-situ remediation measures. In order to ensure better ecological recovery, Flock & Lock technique has been developed to simultaneously sink cyanobacteria and immobilize P but requires a combination of flocculent and P inactivation agent. Here we synthesized a novel lanthanum-modified pyroaurite (LMP), as an alternative for Flock & Lock of cyanobacteria and phosphorus at the background of rich humic acid and suspended solids. LMP shows a P adsorption capacity of 36.0 mg/g and nearly 100 % removal of chlorophyll-a (Chl-a), turbidity , UV 254 and P at a dosage (0.3 g/L) much lower than the commercial analogue (0.5 g/L). The resultant sediment (98.2 % as immobile P) exhibits sound stability without observable release of P or re-growth of cyanobacteria over a 50-day incubation period. The use of LMP also constrains the release of toxic microcystins to 1.4 μg/L from the sunk cyanobacterial cells, outperforming the commonly used polyaluminum chloride (PAC). Similar Flock & Lock efficiency could also be achieved in real eutrophic water. The outstanding Flock & Lock performance of LMP is attributable to the designed La modification. During LMP treatment, La acts as not only a P binder by formation of LaPO 4 , but also a coagulant to create a synergistic effect with pyroaurite. The controlled hydrolysis of surface La(III) over pyroaurite aided the possible formation of La(III)-pyroaurite networking structure, which significantly enhanced the Flock & Lock process through adsorption, charge neutralization, sweep flocculation and entrapment. In the end, the preliminary economic analysis is performed. The results demonstrate that LMP is a versatile and cost-effective agent for in-situ remediation of eutrophic waters.

The enrichment efficiency during the high-value conversion of carbon dioxide still presents certain limitations in practical applications. Iron-cobalt-based metal-organic framework (MOF) nanoparticles, which exhibit lower toxicity to Microcystis aeruginosa , have been successfully introduced into microalgae solutions to address the issue of low CO 2 concentration in interfacial reactions. When 1,4-naphthalenedicarboxylic acid was employed as an organic ligand under synthesis conditions of 130°C, pH 3.5, and a reaction time of 15 h, the resulting MOF exhibited a CH₄ yield of 92.6 μmol g⁻¹ h⁻¹ in the photocatalytic system at room temperature (25°C). The combination of Microcystis aeruginosa with the optimal Fe-Co-MOFs system achieved a selectivity of up to 96.1 % in converting CO 2 into CH 4 . When Microcystis aeruginosa was cultured in a modified medium with a pH of 6.78 and 5 mg of NDC-T130 at 25°C for 12 h, an OD 600 of 0.192 ± 0.01 was observed. The CH₄ yield from the Microcystis aeruginosa -NDC-T130 co-culture composite system was 1.46 times that of the Fe-Co-MOFs. Density-functional theory calculations indicate that carbon dioxide molecules preferentially adsorb on the crystal surfaces of (CoFe 2 )O 4 (113) and (Co 0.457 Fe 0.543 )(Co 1.543 Fe 0.457 )O 4 (311), with the Co site being more likely to serve as the reactive site for CO 2 photoreduction to CH 4 within the Fe-Co-MOFs. Transcriptome analysis demonstrates that MOFs enhance the dark reactions of microalgae and facilitate further CO 2 fixation for photosynthesis and electron transfer, which are crucial for improving the high-value CO 2 conversion efficiency of this system. This strategy provides both experimental and theoretical support for iron-based MOFs as photocatalytic materials, regardless of CO 2 concentration.

Harmful algal blooms dominated by Microcystis aeruginosa ( M. aeruginosa ) threaten aquatic ecosystems and public health. Traditional treatment methods had limitations of temporary effects or slow response. To address these issues, this study designed a multifunctional CTA-CS/M composite with flocculation and long-term algal inhibition, which constructed "metal-azolate frameworks (M) core - chitosan (CS) bridge - 3-chloro-2-hydroxypropyl trimethylammonium chloride (CTA) shell" hierarchical structure constructed via CS/M coordination and covalent grafting of CTA onto CS. CTA-CS/M was systematically characterized by zeta potential, XRD, FTIR, XPS, SEM and other techniques. Flocculation experiments showed that CTA-CS/M exhibited superior aggregation of M. aeruginosa , at a dosage of ≥ 10 mg L −1 , complete sedimentation was achieved within 30 min, outperforming the commercial flocculant polyaluminium chloride (PAC) and similar flocculants reported. The composite maintained clear supernatants for 60 days, demonstrating long-term inhibition of algal regeneration. At a concentration of ≥ 10 mg L −1 , it showed strong adaptability to pH (7.0–10.0) and algal concentrations (0.8–5.5 ×10 8 cells L −1 ), and could be combined with low-cost cotton towel filtration for efficient floc separation. Mechanistic studies revealed that the adsorption process followed pseudo-second-order kinetics and the Langmuir isotherm, with -N(CH 3 ) 3 + groups on CTA-CS/M as the key functional groups, driving single-layer chemical adsorption through electrostatic attraction with negatively charged groups on M. aeruginosa . This work upgrades flocculation into a comprehensive long-term strategy for cyanobacterial bloom control.

The co-occurrence of harmful algal blooms and antibiotic residues poses a critical challenge for water pollution control, requiring photocatalysts with both high reactivity and environmental adaptability. Herein, two cobalt phthalocyanine-based covalent organic frameworks (PcPy-COF and PcPyCl-COF) were constructed and systematically evaluated for visible-light-driven inhibition of Microcystis aeruginosa under tetracycline (TC, 500 μg/L) stress. Both COFs exhibited robust structural order, strong metal–ligand coordination, and catalytic stability, achieving effective algal inactivation within 72 h. PcPy-COF showed superior performance at a low dosage (5 mg/L), with consistent efficacy across five natural water matrices. Mechanistic investigations revealed that photocatalytic suppression was driven by reactive oxygen species (ROS)-induced oxidative stress, as evidenced by pigment degradation, membrane disruption, and EPR detection of ·OH and O 2 · - . DFT calculations indicated enhanced charge separation in PcPy-COF (CT: 90.7%), a lower exciton binding energy (0.97 eV), and more favorable O 2 reduction thermodynamics. Combined Gibbs free energy and density of states analyses further supported its enhanced electron transfer and oxygen activation capabilities. This work provides valuable guidance for the rational design of COF-based photocatalysts for integrated remediation of eutrophication and antibiotic pollution.

Compared to traditional treatment methods, the catalytic ozonation process based on an advanced and reliable ozone generator and highly efficient catalysts has shed new light on treating algal blooms in water bodies. In this study, Ag 3 PO 4 /NiAl-LDH nanocomposites were synthesized by a two-step co-precipitation method, characterized, and applied as ozonation catalysts for the inactivation of Microcystis aeruginosa . Under controlled conditions, the nanocomposite (ANA-10) with an Ag 3 PO 4 : NiAl-LDH weight ratio of 1:10 exhibited excellent catalytic ozonation performance and reusability, effectively achieving a nearly complete algae removal within 60 min. The rate constant of ANA-10 reached approximately 0.0958 min −1 , being 6.4-, 2.8-, and 2.1-fold higher than that of individual O 3 , Ag 3 PO 4 , and NiAl-LDH, respectively. The variations in the physiological properties of the algal cells reflect severe damage and destruction of their cellular morphology, membrane permeability, intracellular and extracellular organics, proteins, and antioxidant system during the ANA-10 catalyzed ozonation process. Electron spin resonance (ESR) and quenching experiments indicated that algae inactivation can be attributed to the formed reactive oxygen species (ROS), such as OH, O 2 − and 1 O 2 . In addition, the mechanism of ROS formation over ANA-10 was clarified and involved Ag 3 PO 4 -assisted enhancement of the redox of Ni 2+ /Ni 3+ and accelerated surface hydroxylation. Overall, this study offers useful insights into the control of harmful cyanobacterial blooms.

Copper (Cu) and cadmium (Cd) are commonly found in polluted water bodies due to intensive anthropogenic activities, but their combined toxicity on Microcystis aeruginosa remains unknown. The present study conducted a 96-h cultivation experiment to investigate the toxicity effects of Cu and Cd, both individually and in mixture, on the growth, oxidative response and gene expression of Microcystis aeruginosa . Results showed that Cd alone had no negative impact on M. aeruginosa growth; whereas growth was significantly inhibited by Cu alone and by the mixture. High concentrations of Cu (200 µg L − 1 ) and Cd (50 µg L − 1 ), as well as their mixture, induced oxidative stress in M. aeruginosa . The ftsH gene, prx gene, fabZ gene and recA gene were all up-regulated by high concentrations of Cu (200 µg L − 1 ), Cd (50 µg L − 1 ) and their mixtures (100 + 25 and 200 + 50 µg L − 1 ), which however, decreased the expression of the psbA gene. The combined toxicity assessment suggested that synergistic interaction occurred in treatments with low Cu and Cd concentrations (100 + 25 µg L − 1 ). Our results suggest that the toxicity effects of Cu and Cd are exacerbated when they co-exist in the natural environment at relatively low concentrations.

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) had been demonstrated efficacy in the inhibition of Microcystis . However, the influence of ligand selection on this inhibitory effect remains to be fully elucidated. The metal-azolate framework (MAF) is a subclass of the MOF. In this study, the methyl groups in the ligands were adjusted based on MAF-7, and 3-methyl-1,2,4-triazole (Hmtz), 1-methyl-1,2,4-triazole (Mhtz), and 1,2,4-triazole (Tz) were used as ligands to conduct comprehensive research and verification on the effects of zinc-based MAFs (Zn-MAFs) on the removal of Microcystis aeruginosa ( M. aeruginosa ). Through structural characterization, it was found that the differences in methyl groups led to different Zn-MAFs characteristics and affected their M. aeruginosa removal performance. The anti- Microcystis characteristics and mode of action of Zn-MAFs were systematically studied and compared with H 2 O 2 . The findings indicated that the inhibitory effect of Zn-Tz on M. aeruginosa was significantly enhanced, and the inhibitory effect produced within the unit cost is the highest, the comprehensive cost is 219 times lower than that of the reported MAF-7. A comprehensive evaluation of the underlying mechanism revealed that the presence of Zn-Tz resulted in the deterioration of the intracellular photosystem of M. aeruginosa cells, the degradation of the cell membrane, and the damage of ribosomes. Concurrently, the results of the zebrafish acute toxicity test indicated that, in comparison with the grade III acute toxicity of H 2 O 2 , Zn-MAFs exhibited no discernible acute toxicity. This study identified a novel type of low-cost and safe MAF, providing a promising method for the regulation of cyanobacterial blooms.

In this study, the biosynthesis of microcystins (MCs) was investigated after long-term nitrogen-starved conditions in cyanobacterium Microcystis aeruginosa . The results demonstrated that the algal cells were able to survive in a non-growing state with nitrogen starvation for more than one month. The physiological properties of the algal cells were studied to elucidate the mechanisms of viability under nitrogen-deprivation conditions. After the state of nitrogen chlorosis, new toxins could be resynthesized and tracked using 15 N-stable isotope-labelled nitrogen. Nitrogen starvation of nutritionally replete cells resulted in a significant increase of microcystin-LY (MC-LY), thereby suggesting that MC-LY may undergo catabolism to provide nitrogen or that MC-LY may be produced to play an important role in the cell in response to nitrogen deprivation. The rank order of different types of nitrogen in algal cells assimilation was N-ammonium > N-urea > N-nitrate > N-alanine. The relationship between the production of toxin variants and various environmental conditions is an interesting issue for future research and may help improve the understanding of the ecological role of cyanobacterial toxins .

Cyanobacterial blooms can cause serious damage to aquatic ecosystems. However, we have demonstrated that typical algae-blooming speciesMicrocystis aeruginosa (M. aeruginosa)combined with photocatalysts could synergistically facilitate the photodecontamination of tetracycline hydrochloride (TC) and Cr(VI). In this study, for the first time, harmful algae were successfully converted into photoreactive bionano hybrid materials by immobilizingM. aeruginosacells onto polyacrylonitrile (PAN)-TiO2/Ag hybrid nanofibers, and their photocatalytic activity was evaluated. The addition ofM. aeruginosasignificantly improved the photodecontamination, and the reaction rate constant (k) values of TC and Cr(VI) degradation byM. aeruginosa-PAN/TiO2/Ag nanofiber mats were 2.4 and 1.5-fold higher than that of bare PAN/TiO2/Ag nanofiber. Photoreaction caused damage to algae cells, but no microcystin was found that had been photodegraded simultaneously. The effects of various active species were also investigated, and the photodegradation mechanism was proposed. Recycling tests revealed that this flexibleM. aeruginosa-PAN/TiO2/Ag hybrid mat had potential application in the removal of mixed organic and inorganic pollutants with high efficiency and without secondary pollutants. Thus, harmful algae blooms could serve as an efficient materials to remove toxic pollutants in a sustainable way under visible light irradiation. Keywords:Microcystis aeruginosa;PAN nanofiber;TiO2photocatalytic;Ag nanoparticles;tetracycline;Cr(VI)

The ampholytic chitosan based flocculant carboxylated chitosan graft-(3-chloro-2-hydroxypropyl) trimethylammonium chloride-dimethyl diallyl ammonium chloride (CPCTS-g-P (CTA-DMDAAC)) was synthesized by photo polymerization using carboxylated chitosan (CPCTS), 3-chloro-2-chloropropyltrimethylammonium chloride (CTA) and dimethyldiallylammonium chloride (DMDAAC) as the cationic co-monomers. The effects of monomer concentration, the ratio of CPCTS and cationic monomers, cationic degree, initiator time, photoinitiator concentration, and pH value on the properties of CPCTS-g-P (CTA-DMDAAC) were studied. Themicrocystis aeruginosathat was cultured in laboratory was used for CPCTS-g-P (CTA-DMDAAC) flocculation tests. The effects of CPCTS-g-P (CTA-DMDAAC) dosage, pH value and G value on flocculation performance were investigated. The maximum removal rate of chlorophyll-a (Chl-a) and chemical oxygen demand (COD) that were obtained by CPCTS-g-P (CTA-DMDAAC) were 98.8% and 96.5% under the conditions of dosage 4 mg/L, pH 7 and G value 200 s−1, respectively. The flocculation experiments showed that chitosan-based flocculant CPCTS-g-P (CTA-DMDAAC) had better flocculation performance than commercially available flocculants cationic polyacrylamide (CPAM), Polyferric Sulfate (PFS), and polymeric aluminium (PAC).Keywords:chitosan-based flocculant;alga removal;graft copolymerization;photopolymerization;flocculation properties

Heteroaggregation between magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) and cells is a crucial precondition for the harvesting and separation of algae from the aquatic environment . However, separation mechanisms have not been fully elaborated in previous studies, especially regarding cyanobacteria coated with extracellular polymeric substances (EPS). The present study was conducted to investigate the interaction between PEI-coated iron-oxide nanoparticles (IONPs) and M. aeruginosa as a function of cell type (FACHB-1343 and FACHB-905) and cells with/without extracellular polymeric substances (EPS). The results demonstrated that harvesting efficiency (HE) varied with the different cell types with/without EPS surrounding the cyanobacteria. The PEI-coated IONPs showed higher HE for M9 than for M1 with the same mass ratio of NPs/cyanobacteria. Furthermore, EPS significantly affected the HE because of their heterogeneous composition, which was interpreted by spectral analysis and the DLVO theory. Overall, this study provides guidance on cyanobacteria harvesting with different environmental conditions when employing magnetic separation technology.

Artemisinin sustained-release microspheres (ASMs) with long-term inhibition effects (> 40 days) on harmful freshwater bloom-forming cyanobacteria have been found in previous studies, but the inhibition mechanism is not completely clear. In the present study, we examined the growth effect of ASMs on Microcystis aeruginosa ( M. aeruginosa ) cells at different physiological stages. Growth experiments indicated that M. aeruginosa of different initial densities could be inhibited immediately and chlorophyll-a content both showed significant decreases following exposure of cyanobacteria to optimal dosage of ASMs for 20 days. The algicidal mechanism of ASMs was tested through a suite of physiological parameters (membrane permeability, antioxidant enzymes activity, and lipid peroxidation). The rise of cell membrane permeability indices (intracellular protein, nucleic acid contents, and conductivity) showed that the cellular membrane structure of M. aeruginosa was attacked by ASMs directly causing the leakage of cytoplasm. Antioxidant enzyme activity was a sensitive indicator of the impacts of ASMs which showed a significant downtrend after a few days. ASMs caused a great increase in •O 2 − and malondialdehyde (MDA) level of the algal cells which indicated the increase in lipid peroxidation of M. aeruginosa. Irreversible membrane damage induced by ASMs via the oxidation of ROS may be an important factor responsible for the algicidal mechanism of ASMs on M. aeruginosa cells . The application of ASMs might provide a new direction to control M. aeruginosa , especially before the exponential phase according to the optimal economy and inhibition effect.
