Preparation of LiNi0.5Mn1.5O4 cathode materials by using different-sized Mn3O4 nanocrystals as precursors

Chen Renhong,Mei Jie,Xu Jin,Xu Wanjie,Wang Laisen,Chen Yuanzhi,Peng Dong-Liang

High-voltage LiNi 0.5 Mn 1.5 O 4 with a spinel structure is considered as important cathode materials for high-energy density Li-ion batteries (LIBs). In this study, we investigate the size, structure, and the electrochemical performance of LiNi 0.5 Mn 1.5 O 4 electrodes prepared by using two different-sized Mn 3 O 4 nanocrystal precursors under different calcination conditions. As the calcination temperature rises, the particle sizes of the acquired LiNi 0.5 Mn 1.5 O 4 cathode materials can vary from ~ 100 nm to ~ 1 µm, and the morphology changes from nano round shape to truncated octahedral shape. The content of Mn 3+ is closely related to the calcination temperature and is affected by the size of Mn precursor. It is found that the LiNi 0.5 Mn 1.5 O 4 sample prepared by using 50-nm-sized Mn 3 O 4 nanocrystals under a calcination temperature of 800 C exhibits good cycling performance with a capacity retention ratio of 96.1% at 1 C after 200 cycles, while the LiNi 0.5 Mn 1.5 O 4 sample prepared by using 7-nm-sized Mn 3 O 4 nanocrystals under a calcination temperature of 800 °C shows an excellent rate performance with a capacity retention ratio of 98% after 500 cycles at 10 C. The results show that the size of Mn 3 O 4 precursor is an important parameter that governs the final size and electrochemical performances of LiNi 0.5 Mn 1.5 O 4 cathode materials.

Octahedral and tetrahedral site substitution in spinel Mn3O4 regulates oxygen evolution in acid

Song Haoqiang,Nie Mingjun,Yu Jingkun,Zhou Guoli,Tang Zhiyong,Lu Siyu

Designing cost-effective and acid-stable electrocatalysts for the oxygen evolution reaction is essential for advancing proton exchange membrane water electrolyzers. Here we report a dual-site substituted spinel Mn 3 O 4 catalyst in which Ru partially occupies octahedral Mn sites to enhance Ru–O hybridization and intrinsic catalytic activity, while Co partially replaces tetrahedral Mn sites to stabilize the lattice and improve electronic conductivity. The catalyst requires an overpotential of 175 mV to reach 10 mA cm geo −2 and maintains operation for more than 650 hours at 100 mA cm geo −2 with a voltage degradation rate of 0.23 mV h −1 in 0.5 M H 2 SO 4 . When used as the anode in a proton exchange membrane water electrolyzer, it delivers 1 A cm −2 at a cell voltage of 1.69 V, demonstrating its potential for practical acidic water electrolysis. In situ characterization confirms that Ru and Co substitution alters the oxygen evolution pathway. These findings establish a site-specific cation substitution strategy for developing active, durable, and cost-effective Ru-based electrocatalysts under acidic conditions.

Tetrahedral-site doping modulation in Mn3O4 toward improved water oxidation activity and stability

Shaokai Ma,Zihang Cao,Yiran Zhao,Zihao Wang,Ying Li,Xuewen Xu,Yuanhui Ma,Yanming Xue,Chengchun Tang,Jun Zhang

Manganese-based oxides, particularly spinel Mn 3 O 4 , are promising candidates for alkaline oxygen evolution reaction (OER) catalysts due to their atomic structure, which mimics that of the natural photosynthetic oxygen-evolving complex, and their tunable electronic properties. However, the intrinsic catalytic activity and stability of Mn 3 O 4 remain insufficient for high-performance OER, primarily due to limited oxygen adsorption/desorption capabilities and weak Mn O bonds. In this study, Cu doping is introduced into the tetrahedral sites of the Mn 3 O 4 spinel structure to enhance its catalytic performance. The optimal Cu-doped Mn 3 O 4 catalyst shows a significant reduction in overpotential, from 534 mV to 393 mV at 10 mA cm −2 , along with a decrease in the Tafel slope from 141.9 to 110 mV dec −1 . Additionally, its stability is notably improved, maintaining performance for 130 h compared to just 35 h for undoped Mn 3 O 4 . Experimental results demonstrate that Cu 2+ ions preferentially occupy tetrahedral Mn 2+ sites, which induces an increase in the Mn 3+ content accompanied by the formation of additional oxygen vacancies. This modification not only tunes the electronic structure but also improves charge transfer, electronic conductivity, and the electrochemical surface area. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal that Cu incorporation at tetrahedral sites of Mn 3 O 4 strengthens Mn O d–p hybridization, optimizing the adsorption kinetics of oxygen intermediates and stabilizing the structure, which together enhance both the OER activity and durability. When used as an anode in an anion exchange membrane water electrolyzer (AEMWE), the Cu-doped Mn 3 O 4 exhibits a cell voltage of 2.7  V at 300 mA cm −2 while maintaining excellent stability. This tetrahedral-site doping strategy offers a general approach for enhancing the activity and stability of Mn 3 O 4 and can be extended to other spinel-based OER catalysts.

Nanocomposite Mn3O4-RuO2 Oxygen Evolution Reaction Catalysts for Proton Exchange Membrane Water Electrolysis

Siyi OuYang,Shang Li,Chongxue Zhao,Shuohao Wang,Mu Pan

Hydrogen production via proton exchange membrane water electrolysis (PEMWE) is constrained by the sluggish kinetics of the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) at the anode, which typically requires catalysts rich in noble metals such as iridium (Ir) and ruthenium (Ru) in acidic media, leading to high costs. In this work, Mn3O4-RuO2 nanocomposites were synthesized via a hydrothermal reaction. The morphology, structure, and chemical composition of the catalysts were characterized by XRD, SEM, TEM, EDS, and XPS. The results indicate that the Mn3O4 spinel structure was successfully incorporated into the rutile structure of RuO2, forming a nanocomposite. XPS analysis revealed that the introduction of Mn results in an increased electron density on Ru species, yielding a Mn3O4-RuO2 catalyst with low Ru loading and Ru4+ species in an electron-enriched state. The OER activity parameters, including overpotential at 10 mA·cm−2, mass activity, and Tafel slope, were evaluated using the three-electrode system. The 20% Mn3O4-RuO2 composite exhibited superior activity and good stability under acidic conditions: an OER overpotential (η10) of 200 mV at 10 mA·cm−2, a mass activity of 231 A·g−1 Ru, and a Tafel slope of 53.97 mV·dec−1, outperforming the pure RuO2 catalyst. Durability was assessed via chronoamperometry (CA) and chronopotentiometry (CP), which showed that the performance decay rate of the 20% Mn3O4-RuO2 sample was lower than that of pure RuO2. This study provides a strategy for designing low-cost, acid-stable OER electrocatalysts for energy conversion applications.

Defect-engineered Mn3O4/CNTs composites enhancing reaction kinetics for zinc-ions storage performance

Xiuli Guo,Hao Sun,Chunguang Li,Siqi Zhang,Zhenhua Li,Xiangyan Hou,Xiaobo Chen,Jingyao Liu,Zhan Shi,Shouhua Feng

The designing of reasonable nanocomposite materials and proper introduction of defect engineering are of great significance for the improvement of the poor electronic conductivity and slow reaction kinetics of manganese-based compounds. Herein, we report manganese-deficient Mn 3 O 4 nanoparticles which grow in-situ on highly conductive carbon nanotubes (CNTs) (denoted as DMOC) as an advanced cathode material for aqueous rechargeable zinc-ion batteries (RAZIBs). According to experimental and calculation results, the DMOC cathode integrates the advantages of enriched Mn defects and small particle size. These features not only enhance electronic conductivity but also create more active site and contribute to fast reaction kinetics. Moreover, the structure of DMOC is maintained during the charging and discharging process, thus benefiting for excellent cycle stability. As a result, the DMOC electrode delivers a high specific capacity of 420.6 mA h g −1 at 0.1 A g −1 and an excellent cycle life of 2800 cycles at 2.0 A g −1 with a high-capacity retention of 84.1%. In addition, the soft-packaged battery assembled with DMOC cathode exhibits long cycle life and high energy density of 146.3 Wh kg −1 at 1.0 A g −1 . The results are beneficial for the development of Zn/Mn 3 O 4 battery for practical energy storage.

Mechanochemically synthesized Mn3O4@β-cyclodextrin mediates efficient electron transfer process for peroxymonosulfate activation

Huan Liu,Xiaohui Dai,Lingshuai Kong,Meng Xie,Chengji Sui,Qianyi Zhang,Grzegorz Boczkaj,Przemysław Kowal,Bin Cai,Jinhua Zhan

The rational surface engineering of heterogeneous catalysts is of great significance in advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) for eliminating refractory contaminants but remains challenging. In this study, β-cyclodextrin modified Mn 3 O 4 (Mn 3 O 4 @β-CD) was prepared through a mechanochemical approach for peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation, which achieved efficient bisphenol A (BPA) removal via electron transfer process (ETP). The reactive PMS* complex with elevated potential was identified to dominate the ETP by withdrawing electrons from BPA with Mn 3 O 4 @β-CD working as electron shuttle, as evidenced by spectroscopy and electrochemical techniques. Experimental results and density functional theory (DFT) calculations showed that the β-CD modification enhanced the interfacial accumulation of pollutants and shortened the migration distance between pollutants (electron donor) and catalysts (electron shuttle) to mediate electron transfer more effectively. Benefitting from the improved ETP, the Mn 3 O 4 @β-CD/PMS system showed efficient PMS utilization and practical adaptability in actual waterbodies. This study provides a rational approach for modulating the surface structure of heterogeneous catalysts in PMS-based AOPs for environmental remediation.

Mn4+ sites induced in Mn3O4/CeO2 heterostrucure for boosting oxidation of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural

Yifei Huang,Hongliang Dai,Zhenzhen Huang,Guanhua Wang,Huaiquan Zhao,Xuliang Pang,Weiqiang Fan,Hongye Bai

Electrocatalytic oxidation of biomass derivative 5-Hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) to produce 2,5-furandicarboxylic acid (FDCA) is a promising strategy to promote the utilization of renewable energy resource. However, the intrinsic activity of catalysts is still limited by the insufficient configuration of electronic structure. In this work, Mn 3 O 4 /CeO 2 heterostructure with Mn 4+ sites have been successfully constructed for efficient HMF oxidation. CeO 2 not only serves as an active center, but also enhances the affinity of reaction intermediates and adjusts the electronic structure of Mn species (Mn 3+ + Ce 4+ ↔ Mn 4+ + Ce 3+ ). More high-valent Mn 4+ /Ce 4+ sites have been exposed through the electrochemical reconstruction, contributing to 97.95 % FDCA yield and 97.77 % Faraday efficiency (FE) (0.8 V vs Ag/AgCl). Therefore, this work provides a new insight of Mn 4+ for boosting HMF oxidation, which is essential for exploring the efficient catalyst in the field of biomass conversion.

Bi-magnetic Mn3O4@Ni core–shell binary superparticles: Self-assembly preparation and magnetic behaviors

Wanjie Xu,Yuanzhi Chen,Liubin Shi,Laisen Wang,Dong-Liang Peng

Binary superparticles formed by self-assembling two different types of nanoparticles may utilize the synergistic interactions and create advanced multifunctional materials. Bi-magnetic superparticles with a core–shell structure have unique properties due to their specific spatial configurations. Herein, we built Mn 3 O 4 @Ni core–shell binary superparticles via an emulsion self-assembly technique. The superparticles are generated with a spherical morphology, and have a typical average size of about 240 nm. By altering the ratio of the two magnetic nanoparticles , the thickness of Ni shells can be adjusted. Oleic acid ligands are crucial for the formation of core–shell structure. Magnetic analysis suggests that core–shell superparticles display dual-phase magnetic interactions, contrasting with the single-phase magnetic behaviors of commonly core–shell magnetic nanoparticles . The calculation on the effective magnetic anisotropy constants indicates that the presence of Ni shell layers reduces the dipole interactions among the Mn 3 O 4 core particles. Due to the presence of Ni nanoparticle shells, the blocking temperature of Mn 3 O 4 is reduced, while the Curie temperature of Mn 3 O 4 is independent on Ni content. Tunable magnetic properties can be achieved by modulating the Ni nanoparticle shell thickness. This study offers insights for the development of core–shell superparticles with varied magnetic characteristics.

Study on the Performance and Mechanism of Fe7S8@Mn3O4 Activated Persulfate for Tetracycline Degradation

Hu Huixiang,Zhang Yixing,Li Yun,Xu Zhongqing,Zheng Weinan,Chen Hao,Tang Xuan

In recent years, antibiotics have been widely found in different types of water bodies, and these residues pose a serious threat to ecosystems and human health. Among the treatment methods for degrading antibiotics, advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) based on persulfate activation have received extensive attention and application due to their excellent degradation performance. In this study, the flower-like Fe 7 S 8 @Mn 3 O 4 catalyst material with agglomerated small particles attached to the surface was prepared by hydrothermal method to activate persulfate (PMS) to remove tetracycline. The results showed that the degradation rate of TC could reach 91% in 60 min when TC was 25 mg/L, catalyst dosage was 0.2 g/L and PMS was 0.3 g/L. The pH range was wide, and the degradation rate increased with the increase of temperature. HCO 3 − and H 2 PO 4− have a certain inhibitory effect on the catalytic reaction. Cl − , SO 4 2− and NO 3 − have little impact on the reaction system, and the catalytic material has strong applicability to the environment. The catalytic material has good reusability. Free radical quenching experiments showed that SO4· − , ·OH, 1 O 2 , O 2 · − all played a role. It was confirmed by EPR experiments that ·OH and SO4· − existed in the reaction system. The degradation pathways mainly include demethylation, deamidation, dehydroxylation, hydroxylation, ring-opening oxidation, etc.

Mn3O4 with multiple enzyme-like activity for differential detection of lead and copper ions

Lei Xu,Mao-Ling Luo,Huan Zhu,Jing-Jing Dai,Juan Wang,Feng-Qing Yang

Mn 3 O 4 with dual-enzyme-like activity is synthesized via a simple and green method. • Pb(II) & Cu(II) boost OXD-like activity of Mn 3 O 4 via promoting the generation of O • – 2 . • Pb(II) inhibits the LAC-like activity of Mn 3 O 4 via uncompetitive inhibition. • Fluorescent & colorimetric methods realize differential Pb(II) & Cu(II) detection. Pb(II) can cause irreversible developmental and neurological damage, Cu(II) is an essential trace element but exhibits significant toxicity at excessive concentrations. Therefore, development of reliable detection methods for Pb(II) and Cu(II) is crucially important. In this work, Mn 3 O 4 nanomaterial with both oxidase (OXD)-like and laccase (LAC)-like activities was synthesized using a green and mild approach. Based on the enhancing effect on OXD-like activity of Mn 3 O 4 by Pb(II) and Cu(II), simple and sensitive fluorescent sensing methods for detecting Pb(II) and Cu(II) were developed, with the limits of detection of 0.073 μM and 0.391 μM, respectively. The developed methods were successfully applied to analyze Pb(II) and Cu(II) in various real samples. Furthermore, given that Pb(II) can inhibit the LAC-like activity of Mn 3 O 4 , a colorimetric method for Pb(II) detection with an ultra-wide linear range (1–7 μM and 7–2000 μM) was developed. By combining the fluorescence and colorimetric detection results, the differential detection of Pb(II) and Cu(II) can be realized. In addition, the substrate-dependent regulation of enzyme-like activity of Mn 3 O 4 by Pb(II) was elucidated. Specifically, when 2,4-DP was used as the substrate, Pb(II) inhibited product formation through stabilizing the Mn 3 O 4 –2,4-DP complex. In contrast, when OPD was used as the substrate, Pb(II) promoted the generation of free radicals on the material's surface, enhancing the catalytic reaction. The findings of this study provide a reference for the discriminatory detection of different metals based on multiple enzyme-like activity of nanomaterials. Controllable synthesis of nonlayered high-κ Mn3O4 single-crystal thin films for 2D electronics

Yuan Jiashuai,Jian Chuanyong,Shang Zhihui,Yao Yu,Wang Bicheng,Li Yixiang,Wang Rutao,Fu Zhipeng,Li Meng,Hong Wenting,He Xu,Cai Qian,Liu Wei

Two-dimensional (2D) materials have been identified as promising candidates for future electronic devices. However, high dielectric constant (κ) materials, which can be integrated with 2D semiconductors, are still rare. Here, we report a hydrate-assisted thinning chemical vapor deposition (CVD) technique to grow manganese oxide (Mn 3 O 4 ) single crystal nanosheets, enabled by a strategy to minimize the substrate lattice mismatch and control the growth kinetics. The material demonstrated a dielectric constant up to 135, an equivalent oxide thickness (EOT) as low as 0.8 nm, and a breakdown field strength ( E bd ) exceeding 10 MV/cm. MoS 2 field-effect transistors (FETs) integrated with Mn 3 O 4 thin films through mechanical stacking method operate under low voltages (<1 V), achieving a near 10 8 I on /I off ratio and a subthreshold swing (SS) as low as 84 mV/dec. The MoS 2 FET exhibit nearly zero hysteresis (<2 mV/MV cm⁻¹) and a low drain-induced barrier lowering (~20 mV/V). This work further expands the family of 2D high- κ dielectric materials and provides a feasible exploration for the epitaxial growth of single-crystal thin films of non-layered materials.

Dual-enzyme Mn3O4@NC nanozyme for smartphone-assisted visual detection of tetracycline and nitrite

Chen Wang,Xiao-Qi Dong,Ying Guo

A N-doped carbon composite (Mn 3 O 4 @NC) was prepared by the calcination of Mn-TTTHA . • Mn 3 O 4 @NC exhibited dual-enzyme activities, with the competitive kinetic parameters. • A colorimetric sensor of Mn 3 O 4 @NC was established for the detection of TC and NO 2 − . • The smartphone-assisted sensing platform for TC and NO 2 − were constructed. • The sensor provided possibility for the detection of TC and NO 2 − in real environment. Accurate, reliable and visualized detection of tetracycline (TC) and nitrite (NO 2 − ) is necessary and challenging for the environment and food safety. Hence, we have developed a colorimetric strategy utilizing N-doped carbon composite (Mn 3 O 4 @NC) nanozyme for TC and NO 2 − analysis. Mn 3 O 4 @NC with oxidase-like and peroxidase-like activities is successfully prepared by the calcination process with MOF material as precursor. The dual enzyme-like property could valid catalytic oxidation of 3,3′,5,5′-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) from colorless to blue ox-TMB, accompanied by the production of a variety of reactive oxygen species and the transformation of Mn valence state. Taking advantage of the typical reduction reaction and specific diazotization reaction between TC or NO 2 − and ox-TMB, the nanozyme announces colorimetric and ration colorimetric signals, exhibiting high performance in selectivity and anti-interference ability with corresponding limitation of detection of 0.40 μM and 1.006 μM, respectively. Moreover, by utilizing the color transition reflected in the colorimetric and ration colorimetric response processes, a smartphone assisted sensing platform based on agarose hydrogel was established to achieve one-stop, convenient and visual detection of TC and nitrite. It is worth noting that this method of visualizing and digitizing the detection process overcomes limitations of traditional detection methods and maximizes accurate detection of harmful pollutants. This strategy also provides a promising solution for accurately and reliably detecting TC and nitrite in water and food. A nanoenzyme with dual-enzyme activities was synthesized by the calcination of MOF material. This dual-enzyme activities could effectively catalyze the oxidation of colorless TMB to blue ox-TMB under the action of Mn valence state transition and generation of reactive oxygen species. Its visualized catalytic performance enabled it to be used for colorimetric/ratiometric detection of tetracycline (TC) and nitrite in real water samples with the lower limitation of detection. With the assistence of smartphone and agarose hydrogel, the one-stop, convenient and visible sensing platform was constructed, applying for the TC and nitrite in real water samples. This work provides a new strategy for accurately and reliably detecting TC and nitrite in water and food. Download: Download high-res image (130KB) Download: Download full-size image
