Non-precious metal cocatalysts and interfacial charge transfer dynamics have long been recognized as critical research frontiers in photocatalytic hydrogen production via water splitting. In this study, we demonstrate a highly efficient Mo 2 C/CdS composite photocatalyst, where the construction of Mo-S chemical bonds significantly enhances interfacial charge transfer. Mo 2 C, as an effective non-noble metal cocatalyst, facilitates the efficient acceptance of photogenerated electrons from CdS. The formation of Mo-S bonds substantially boosts the hydrogen evolution activity. Remarkably, the optimized 7 wt% Mo 2 C/CdS composite achieves a photocatalytic hydrogen production rate of 19.94 mmol h -1 g -1 , representing a 51-fold enhancement compared to pristine CdS (0.39 mmol h -1 g -1 ). Furthermore, this hydrogen evolution rate surpasses that of the Pt/CdS composite by 296%. Synchrotron radiation analysis provides direct evidence for the formation of Mo-S chemical bonds at the interface. Additionally, DFT calculations reveal that the Gibbs free energy change for hydrogen adsorption on Mo 2 C/CdS is reduced by -0.23 eV, further confirming the favorable thermodynamics for hydrogen generation. This study not only validates Mo 2 C as a promising cocatalyst but also highlights its potential to replace the benchmark Pt in photocatalytic water splitting. The findings offer valuable insights by intentionally constructing interfacial chemical bonds to accelerate charge transfer and significantly enhance photocatalytic performance.

The highly efficient electrochemical hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) provides a promising way to solve energy and environment problems. In this work, various transition metals (Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, Ag, and Pt) were selected to support on molybdenum carbides by a simple organic-inorganic precursor carburization process. X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis results indicated that the β-Mo2C phase was formed in all metal-doped samples. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis indicated that the binding energy of Mo2+species (Mo2C) shifted to a lower value after metal was doped on the molybdenum carbide surface. Comparing with pure β-Mo2C, the electrocatalytic activity for HER was improved by transition metal doping on the surface. Remarkably, the catalytic activity improvement was more obvious when Pt was doped on molybdenum carbide (2% Pt-Mo2C). The 2% Pt-Mo2C required a η10of 79 mV, and outperformed that of pure β-Mo2C (η10= 410 mV) and other transition metal doped molybdenum carbides, with a small Tafel slope (55 mV/dec) and a low onset overpotential (32 mV) in 0.5 M H2SO4. Also, the 2% Pt-Mo2C catalyst demonstrated a high stability for the HER in 0.5 M H2SO4. This work highlights a feasible strategy to explore efficient electrocatalysts with low cost via engineering on the composition and nanostructure. Keywords:hydrogen evolution reaction;nano-molybdenum-carbide;electro-catalysis;transition metal

In the face of increasingly serious electromagnetic radiation pollution, there is an urgent need to develop new materials with efficient electromagnetic wave absorption. Heterointerface engineering can control the electromagnetic characteristics by adjusting the conductivity and complex permittivity to achieve excellent electromagnetic wave absorption ability. Herein, inspired by honeycomb with an ordered porous structure, we designed a N-doped honeycomb-like porous carbon matrix via a spatially confined-etching strategy, and ultra-fine sized Mo2C nanoparticles were embedded to construct multiple heterointerfaces. Simultaneously, the unique 3D structure successfully prevents the agglomeration of nanoparticles, which is conducive to deeply constructing heterointerfaces and thus enhancing interfacial polarization. Furthermore, the doping of heteroatoms can also trigger strong dipole polarization to improve electromagnetic energy conversion efficiency. Consequently, the composite combined honeycomb-like porous structure with rich Mo2C/C heterointerfaces presents outstanding electromagnetic absorption with a minimum reflection loss value of −65 dB and effective absorption bandwidth up to 5.52 GHz. This study provides new strategies and insights for heterointerface engineering to achieve efficient electromagnetic absorption performance and has broad application prospects in the field of electromagnetic wave absorption.

Efficient photocatalytic solar CO2 reduction presents a challenge because visible-to-near-infrared (NIR) low-energy photons account for over 50% of solar energy. Consequently, they are unable to instigate the high-energy reaction necessary for dissociating C═O bonds in CO2. In this study, we present a novel methodology leveraging the often-underutilized photo-to-thermal (PTT) conversion. Our unique two-dimensional (2D) carbon layer-embedded Mo2C (Mo2C–Cx) MXene catalyst in black color showcases superior near-infrared (NIR) light absorption. This enables the efficient utilization of low-energy photons via the PTT conversion mechanism, thereby dramatically enhancing the rate of CO2 photoreduction. Under concentrated sunlight, the optimal Mo2C–C0.5 catalyst achieves CO2 reduction reaction rates of 12000–15000 μmol·g–1·h–1 to CO and 1000–3200 μmol·g–1·h–1 to CH4. Notably, the catalyst delivers solar-to-carbon fuel (STF) conversion efficiencies between 0.0108% to 0.0143% and the STFavg = 0.0123%, the highest recorded values under natural sunlight conditions. This innovative approach accentuates the exploitation of low-frequency, low-energy photons for the enhancement of photocatalytic CO2 reduction.

Li S battery suffers from polysulfides' shuttle effect and unsatisfactory redox kinetics. To tackle these issues, we design a multi-functional interlayer based on heterogeneous Mo 2 C/Co confided by N-doped porous carbon (Mo 2 C/Co@NC) via one-step controlled pyrolysis of Co 2+ /MoO 4 2− /2-methylimidazole. The heterogeneous Mo 2 C/Co as active centers effectively immobilizes polysulfides and accelerates their redox transformation kinetics. Moreover, the hierarchical porous NC matrix guarantees rapid electron/ion transport. Acting as an interlayer, the electrochemical evaluation demonstrates desirable performance. Specifically, a high initial discharge capacity of 874.0 mAh g −1 is achieved at 3C, which retains 373.3 mAh g −1 after 1000 cycles (capacity fading rate: 0.057 %/cycle), significantly outperforming battery without interlayer (0.082 %). This work demonstrates an effective heterointerface engineering strategy for the development of Li S battery practical application.

Lithium–oxygen (Li–O2) batteries are considered an important candidate for the next generation of energy storage systems due to their ultra-high theoretical energy density (11 586 mA h g−1), but their slow kinetic reactions, high overpotential and cyclic instability seriously limit their practical applications. In this study, sulfur modified Mo2C (S@Mo2C) cathode materials were prepared by hydrothermal synthesis by sulfur (S) doping to optimize the electronic structure and catalytic activity of Mo2C (Mo2C). Experiments show that S@Mo2C exhibits significantly improved electrochemical performance compared to commercial Mo2C: its specific capacity is up to 3955 mA h g−1 (commercial material only 508 mA h g−1), the charge and discharge overpotential is reduced to 0.26 V (53.6%), and the capacity retention rate remains 77.8% after 250 cycles. X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis showed that the introduction of sulfur induced the formation of a heterostructure of MoS2/MoS3 in the Mo2C lattice, which enhanced the conductivity and oxygen reduction/precipitation (ORR/OER) activity of the material. In addition, sulfur doping promotes the formation of highly conductive amorphous Li2O2 and effectively inhibits the accumulation of insulating ring Li2O2, thus significantly improving the cycle stability and energy efficiency of the battery. This study provides a new structural regulation strategy for the design of high efficiency lithium oxygen battery catalysts.

The development of efficient and cost-effective electrocatalysts is essential for the electrochemical reduction of N2 to produce NH3 under ambient conditions. Herein, various well-dispersed Mo-based nanoparticles are selectively synthesized to reveal the influences of the compositions and hetero-interfaces on the performance for the N2 reduction reaction (NRR). Systematic experiments discovered that compared with single-component Mo2C or Mo nanoparticles, the heterostructured binary MoC/Mo2C and ternary Mo/MoC/Mo2C nanoparticles exhibit significantly enhanced NRR performance by creating abundant hetero-interfaces. Moreover, theoretical calculations reveal that the integration of metallic Mo with MoC/Mo2C appreciably reduces the energy demand for NH3 desorption, contributing to the enhanced NRR process. As a result, a remarkable NH3 yield rate of up to 20.4 μg h−1 mg−1 and a FE up to 18.9% can be achieved. These findings suggest that engineering crystalline phases and hetero-interfaces represents a new avenue for advancing the electrocatalytic performance of a NRR catalyst.

As a non-noble metal material, molybdenum carbide is considered to be an electrocatalyst with the most potential for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) due to its similar electron structure to platinum. However, its high preparation temperature easily leads to aggregations of nanoparticles (NPs) that affect the properties of Mo2C. For this purpose, we synthesized ultrafine molybdenum carbide anchored on nanocarbon (MCC) by designing an Mo-precursor to engineer micro/nanostructures. The results show that as-prepared MCC materials consist of 3D laminated 2D lamellar structures that are self-assembled from Mo2C NPs anchored on nanocarbon. Electrocatalytic tests indicate that the 3D/2D MCC materials exhibit excellent activity and stability in alkaline solution. Notably, a low overpotential of 123 mV is achieved to drive a current density of 10 mA cm−2 for HER, which implies the 3D/2D structures are conducive to molecules accessing active sites, transport and diffusion, and this structural MCC has promising application as an alternative non-noble metal electrocatalyst for hydrogen evolution and other catalysis.

For practical application of lithium–sulfur batteries (LSBs), designing devices with an overall optimal structure instead of modifying electrode materials is significant. Herein, we report a chip-inspired design of a vertically integrated structure as an LSB cathode by implanting Mo2C nanoparticles and nanosulfur into the reduced graphene oxide (rGO) matrix. This configuration enabled the synthesis of isolated sulfur nanoreactors (S-NRs) integrated in a tandem array on the rGO, generating chip-like integrated LSBs. The spatial confinement/protection and concentration gradient of the S-NRs effectively avoided the dissolution, diffusion, and loss of polysulfides, thereby enhancing the sulfur utilization and redox reaction kinetics. Additionally, the adaptive storage energy can be improved by utilizing the tandem, isolation, and synergistic multiplicative effect among the nanoreactor units. As a result, the integrated LSB cathode obtained excellent electrochemical performances with an initial capacity of 1392 mAh g–1 at 0.1C, a low capacity decay rate of 0.017% per cycle during 1500 cycles of operation at 0.5C, and a superior rate performance. This work provides a rational design idea and method of further advancing the precise preparation of high-performance energy storage devices.

The
practical application of the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER)
in water electrolysis is severely hindered by the high cost, high
Pt loading, insufficient durability, and agglomeration tendency of
noble-metal nanoparticles. Despite numerous recent strategies, their
overall performance remains unsatisfactory. Herein, we report a Pt/Mo 2 C composite catalyst with tunable cluster size and intimately
coupled interfaces, precisely fabricated by a cluster beam deposition
(CBD) strategy. The optimized catalyst delivers overpotentials of
only 47 mV in acidic media and 228 mV in alkaline media at a current
density of 10 mA cm –2 . Remarkably, it exhibits outstanding
long-term stability (110 h) under acidic conditions, along with significantly
improved Pt utilization. The catalyst achieves a high mass activity
of 43.9 A mg pt –1 at an overpotential
of 50 mV, outperforming many benchmark Pt-based catalysts. Comprehensive
characterizations reveal pronounced interfacial electron transfer
from Pt to Mo 2 C, which optimizes the d-band center of Pt
and the adsorption energy of hydrogen intermediates. Furthermore,
particle agglomeration and surface passivation are effectively suppressed,
accelerating charge transfer and hydrogen desorption kinetics. This
work presents a strategy for the rational fabrication of metal clusters
with precise size control and offers a paradigm for designing noble
metal/transition metal carbide hybrid electrocatalysts.

Molybdenum carbide, with its platinum-like electrical properties, has emerged as a promising alternative to precious metal catalysts. However, the inefficiency of its synthesis and limited catalytic activity have severely hindered its widespread application. In this paper, a novel heterostructure composed of Mo 2 C and CoNi alloy nanoparticles was constructed and embedded in carbon nanofibers to form Mo 2 C–CoNi @CNFs by simple electrospinning technology and pyrolysis process, which serves as an efficient bifunctional electrocatalyst for both hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER). The catalyst demonstrated low overpotentials of 128 mV for HER and 306 mV for OER at 10 mA cm −2 in 1 M KOH, together with low Tafel slope values of 74.2 mV dec −1 and 72.4 mV dec −1 respectively, along with outstanding stability over 100 h. The remarkable catalytic activity and durability are all attributed to synergistic effect of multiple components and high electrical conductivity of carbon nanofibers. This work not only advances the understanding of Mo 2 C-based catalysts, but also offers a path towards more efficient and cost-effective catalysts for energy conversion processes.

Regulating the electrocatalytic activity of metal carbides is the key to achieving highly sensitive electrochemical sensing. Molybdenum carbide (Mo2C) nanoparticles were anchored on the surface of nitrogen doped carbon nanomaterials (NC) through polymerization and calcination. By adjusting the calcination conditions, the crystal phase structure of Mo2C nanoparticles was successfully regulated, and two kinds of Mo2C nanoparticles with different crystal phase structure were obtained. The effect of the crystal structure of Mo2C on the electrocatalytic reduction of H2O2 was investigated. The results show that Mo2C with the hexagonal structure (H-Mo2C) has higher electrocatalytic activity for H2O2 reduction reaction, and the sensor based on H-Mo2C/NC could detect H2O2 in a wide linear range from 0.02 mM to 7.1 mM with a high sensitivity of 282.9 μA·mM−1·cm−2 and a low detection limit of 0.45 μM (S/N = 3). Moreover, the sensor can also accurately determine the content of H2O2 in disinfectant and milk samples. This study demonstrated Mo2C with the hexagonal structure as an effective sensing material for H2O2.
