Vacancy-driven reversal of layer-dependent friction in two-dimensional MoSe2

Haoyu Deng,Xin Wang,Tongtong Yu,Xinjian He,Shuang Li,Pengfei Liu,Changhe Du,Daoai Wang

The atomic-layer dependence of friction is a fundamental characteristic of two-dimensional (2D) materials, yet the impact of atomic defects on it remains largely unexplored. Here, we report the reversal of frictional layer-number dependence in chemical vapor deposition grown ${\mathrm{MoSe}}_{2}$ by tuning the selenium vacancy concentration. While stoichiometric triangular ${\mathrm{MoSe}}_{2}$ follows the conventional trend where bilayer friction is lower than that of the monolayer, Se-deficient hexagonal ${\mathrm{MoSe}}_{2}$ exhibits an anomalous behavior with bilayer friction exceeding the monolayer. A similar defect-dependent reversal is further observed in ${\mathrm{WSe}}_{2}$, while triangular ${\mathrm{WSe}}_{2}$, ${\mathrm{MoS}}_{2}$, and ${\mathrm{WS}}_{2}$ exhibit the conventional layer dependence consistent with the proposed mechanism. Density functional theory calculations and experiments reveal that Se vacancies impede interlayer charge redistribution and weaken van der Waals coupling, reducing adhesion energy from 0.538 to 0.498 J/${\mathrm{m}}^{2}$. The consequent reduction in effective film stiffness amplifies the out-of-plane puckering effect, enhancing energy dissipation. These findings demonstrate that defect engineering provides an effective strategy for modulating the nanotribological properties of 2D lubricating interfaces.

Heterogenous Epoxidation of Isobutene Selectively Enabled by MoSe2 in Hexafluoroisopropanol (HFIP)

Xiaodao Liang,Chenghao Zhang,Yaorong He,Yanxiong Fang,Hongyu Chen,Hongbing Ji,Yan Yang

Herein, a high selective epoxidation of isobutene was achieved by heterogeneously dispersed MoSe2with tert-butyl hydroperoxide (TBHP), which further showed versatile substrate scopes and well-retained activity among recycling tests. A rational mechanism is proposed based on extensive control experiments and electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy, surprisingly unveiling the metal–oxo and radical mediated pathways dramatically accelerated by hydrogen bonds of hexafluoroisopropanol (HFIP).

Photoluminescence nonuniformity from self-seeding nuclei in CVD-grown monolayer MoSe2

Xiangling Tian,Rongfei Wei,Shanshan Liu,Yeming Zhang,Jianrong Qiu

We present optical spectroscopy (photoluminescence and Raman spectrum) studies of monolayer transition metal dichalcogenide MoSe2, with spatial location, temperature and excitation power dependence. The investigated spectra show location-dependent behavior with an increase in photoluminescence and Raman intensity and a blue-shift in photoluminescence peak position in the inner region. The observed behaviors of a large shift in the photoluminescence peak position at the edge and biexciton emissions in the inner region confirm that the monolayer MoSe2 crystals grow from nucleation centers during the CVD process. Temperature activated energy and dependence of the peak position are attributed to residual oxygen during the growth. Investigating this information provides a basis for precisely controlling the synthesis of TMDCs and their application in advanced optoelectronics.

Two-dimensional Sb2Te3/MoSe2 van der Waals heterojunction for high-sensitivity photodetectors

Meng Li,Qian Cai,Wenting Hong,Xu He,Wei Liu

Photodetectors based on two-dimensional (2D) materials are revolutionizing optoelectronics by enabling high sensitivity, ultrafast response, and broadband detection. However, standalone 2D materials often suffer from high dark current, slow response times, and limited light absorption. Here, we demonstrate a high-performance photodetector based on a Sb2Te3/MoSe2 van der Waals (vdW) heterojunction, leveraging the topologically protected surface states of Sb2Te3 and the strong light absorption of MoSe2. The built-in electric field at the heterojunction interface enhances charge separation, suppresses recombination, and significantly reduces dark current. As a result, the device exhibits a high detectivity of 5.14 × 1012 Jones, an exceptional photoresponsivity of 178 A W−1, and fast response times of 110 μs (rise) and 230 μs (fall) under 532 nm illumination at 1 V bias. Additionally, the heterojunction enables broadband photodetection spanning 532 to 1550 nm, making it suitable for optical communication and sensing applications. This work provides new insights into the integration of topological insulators with transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) to achieve next-generation optoelectronic devices with superior performance.

Responsive functionalized MoSe2 nanosystem for highly efficient synergistic therapy of breast cancer

Yanan Liu,Chunfang Wei,Ange Lin,Jiali Pan,Xu Chen,Xufeng Zhu,Youcong Gong,Guanglong Yuan,Lanmei Chen,Jie Liu,Zhaohui Luo

The photothermal/photodynamic synergistic therapy is a promising tumor treatment, but developing nanosystems that achieve synchronous photothermal/photodynamic functions is still quite challenging. Here, we use a simple method to synthesize molybdenum selenide nanoparticles (MoSe 2 NPs) with a photothermal effect as a carrier, and load a photosensitizer ICG to form a nanosystem (MoSe 2 @ICG-PDA-HA)with dual photothermal/photodynamic functions under near-infrared irradiation. In addition, the surface modification of the nanosystem with acid-responsive release polydopamine (PDA) and tumor-targeted hyaluronic acid (HA) enhanced the stability of the photosensitizer ICG and the accumulation of ICG at tumor sites. The multicellular sphere assay simulated solid tumors and demonstrated that MoSe 2 @ICG-PDA-HA could significantly inhibit the 4T1 cell growth. The anti-tumor experiments in tumor-bearing mice showed that MoSe 2 @ICG-PDA-HA not only significantly inhibited the growth of 4T1 subcutaneous tumors, but also inhibited their metastasis. This study presented a nanosystem that could improve the photostability of optical materials and enhance the photothermal/photodynamic synergy effect, providing a new idea for finding a way to effectively treat breast cancer.

Mesoporous MoSe2/C composite as anode material for sodium/lithium ion batteries

Furong Qin,Hongxing Hu,Yongjia Jiang,Kai Zhang,Zhao Fang,Yanqing Lai,Jie Li

A mesoporous MoSe 2 /C composite is synthesized through a nano-casting technique along with heat treatment. Nano-silica particles are used as templates to create mesopores . Homogeneously dispersed Molybdenum and selenium particles in the starch substrate are reacted with each other to formed MoSe 2 nanosheets when subjected to heat-treatment. Meanwhile, the starch is carbonized into carbon. The mesoporous MoSe 2 /C composite is investigated as an anode material for both lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) and sodium-ion batteries (SIBs). It presents good storage capacity for both lithium ions and sodium ions . Under the current density of 200 mA g −1 , the mesoporous MoSe 2 /C composite exhibits reversible capacity of 618 mA h g −1 for LIBs and 360 mA h g −1 for SIBs after 300 cycles. The superior electrochemical performance could be ascribed to the mesoporous structure of MoSe 2 /C composite which provides sufficient space for accommodating huge volumetric expansion and the charge product, selenium.

Wang Kai,Wu Jie,Chen Gexiang,Qiao Hui,Zhou Yang,Li Jun,Qi Xiang

Molybdenum selenide (MoSe 2 ) has been extensively studied in recent years due to its strong absorption for sunlight and unique band structure. Herein, a self-assembly three-dimensional (3D) MoSe 2 nanoflowers were prepared by a two-step process. Significantly, the photodetection device based on MoSe 2 nanoflowers exhibited a maximum responsivity about 12.39 µA W −1 and a rapid photo-response time about 0.15 s at 0 V bias under simulated sunlight exposure benefiting from its large specific surface area and unique morphologic structure. Meanwhile, we demonstrated the outstanding stability after 2 weeks of the photodetection device. In this way, the MoSe 2 nanoflower-based photodetectors enriched the basic research of molybdenum selenide and provided some reference for the following researches based on molybdenum selenide.

Self-Powered Broadband Photodetector Based on MoSe2/SnS2 Van der Waals Heterostructure

Donglin Wang,Tianhao Feng,Ziyan Li,Xuezhen Zhai,Dewei Liu,Jimin Shang,Lamei Zhang

The increasing demand for broadband and self-powered optoelectronic devices has stimulated the development of two-dimensional (2D) material-based photodetectors. Here, we construct a self-powered photodetector based on a MoSe2/SnS2van der Waals (vdW) heterostructure. The unique combination of MoSe2and SnS2provides complementary light absorption and a type-II band alignment, which generates an interfacial built-in electric field to facilitate photogenerated carrier separation and transport, enabling efficient self-powered operation without external bias. The device exhibits a broad spectral photoresponse from ultraviolet (UV) to infrared (IR) wavelengths (350–1050 nm). Under zero bias, the photodetector achieves a responsivity of 0.6 mA/W and a rapid response time of 5.8/6.1 ms (rise/fall) under 405 nm illumination, demonstrating effective self-driven photoresponse. With an applied reverse bias of −2 V, the device further reaches a responsivity of 161 mA/W and a detectivity of 8.6 × 1010Jones under 405 nm illumination. In addition, the device exhibits a low dark current of 5 pA and a high on/off ratio of 1180. These results demonstrate the potential of the MoSe2/SnS2vdW heterostructure for broadband and self-powered optoelectronic applications.

Multidimensional Manipulation of MoSe2 Enabled by Vanadium Doping for Efficient Nitrogen Reduction

Shuaiting Lv,Jiayi Wang,Bilong Liu,Songhua Yang,Xufa Peng,Hao Fei,Fangyang Liu,Dezhi Wang,Zhuangzhi Wu

As a promising alternative to the energy-intensive Haber–Bosch process, the electrochemical nitrogen reduction reaction (NRR) still faces challenges in catalyst development. This work demonstrates that vanadium doping is an effective strategy for significantly enhancing the NRR performance of MoSe2. A series of V-doped MoSe2 catalysts were synthesized via a one-step hydrothermal method. Comprehensive characterization reveals that moderate V doping multidimensionally modifies the electronic and architectural structure of MoSe2, and balancing of their variation can realize a promising enhancement of performance. The optimized catalyst (MSV-2, 4.92 atom % of V doping) achieves a superior ammonia yield rate of 28.37 μg h–1 mg–1 at −0.7 V and a higher Faradaic efficiency, far exceeding the performance of pristine MoSe2. Theoretical and experimental evidence demonstrates that the enhancement is attributed to the V incorporation-induced boost of N2 activation, facilitation of charge transfer, and effective suppression of the competing hydrogen evolution reaction. This study provides a fundamental understanding of the doping-induced optimization mechanism and offers a viable approach for designing high-performance, noble-metal-free electrocatalysts for sustainable ammonia synthesis.

TD-COF encapsulation of FeSe2/MoSe2 heterostructures for efficient peroxymonosulfate-activated photocatalysis

Jiejing Yang,Nan Lv,Yuteng Zhang,Andong Zhao,Haifeng Zhang

FeSe 2 /MoSe 2 @TD-COF heterostructure with integrated photocatalytic functions. • TD-COF shell enhances light absorption and interfacial reactant enrichment. • FeSe 2 /MoSe 2 heterojunction regulates charge separation and electron transfer. • Functional integration markedly improves peroxymonosulfate activation efficiency. • Rapid TCH degradation dominated by ·O 2 - and SO 4 · - radicals. A rationally designed core–shell heterostructure (FeSe 2 /MoSe 2 @TD-COF) is constructed via in situ growth of an imine-linked covalent organic framework on a FeSe 2 /MoSe 2 heterojunction for efficient peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation under simulated sunlight irradiation. In this core–shell architecture, the FeSe 2 /MoSe 2 heterojunction serves as a charge-separation and electron-regulation center, while the TD-COF shell enhances light harvesting, reactant enrichment, and interfacial confinement, thereby synergistically promoting interfacial charge transfer and PMS activation. The optimized FM-5@TD-COF-9 achieves 96% tetracycline hydrochloride (TCH) removal within 60 min, with degradation rates 43 and 2.88 times higher than those of FeSe 2 /MoSe 2 and TD-COF, respectively. Radical-trapping experiments, electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) measurements, and liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS) analysis reveal that superoxide radicals (·O 2 - ) and sulfate radicals (SO 4 · - ) are the dominant reactive species, while photogenerated holes (h + ) plays a secondary role and hydroxyl radicals (·OH) contributes only marginally, leading to three plausible TCH degradation pathways. This work highlights an effective heterostructure-based strategy for interfacial catalytic regulation in PMS-activated photocatalytic systems. Harnessing ultralow friction in monolayer MoSe2 for high-efficiency direct-current generation

Haoyu Deng,Tongtong Yu,Xinjian He,Chuanshuai Feng,Donghua Xu,Yuanhao Xu,Yange Feng,Liqiang Zhang,Daoai Wang

Strong Au-MoSe 2 electrostatic coupling suppresses dynamic wrinkling, achieving ultralow friction with a coefficient of 0.009. • The MoSe 2 /Au sliding Schottky junction enables near zero wear over 5000 cycles and a DC density of 1.13 × 10 6 A/cm 2 . • Ultralow friction minimizes energy dissipation, maximizing nonequilibrium carrier excitation and energy conversion efficiency. High-output tribovoltaic nanogenerators (TVNGs) suffer from severe interfacial wear and energy dissipation under high contact pressures, critically limiting their conversion efficiency and lifespan. Here, we overcome this challenge, by designing a TVNG based on a Pt/monolayer MoSe 2 /Au Schottky junction, which achieves simultaneously ultra-low friction, high wear resistance, and remarkable current density. Micro/nanoscale experiments and density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal that strong electrostatic coupling, which is induced by cross-interfacial charge transfer between the Au substrate and MoSe 2 , effectively suppresses out-of-plane wrinkling, yielding an exceptionally low friction coefficient of 0.009. Under reciprocating sliding with a diamond probe (∼1.39 GPa contact stress), the device maintains near “zero-wear” structural integrity and delivers a remarkable direct-current density of 1.13 × 10 6 A/cm 2 without perceptible degradation over 5000 cycles. Mechanistically, the robust MoSe 2 -Au interaction provides high interfacial adhesion energy, preventing mechanical energy from dissipating into localized deformation. Crucially, this ultra-low friction effectively suppresses phononic friction dissipation, which drives the efficient excitation of non-equilibrium carriers and substantially enhances the overall energy conversion efficiency. Concurrently, the stable, atomically flat Schottky contact ensures efficient carrier separation, providing a robust theoretical foundation for designing durable, high-power self-powered micro/nano-devices. Vanadium modulated Ni-MoSe2 as highly efficient electrocatalyst for alkaline hydrogen evolution

Hongyan Zhang,Xuehan Yang,Hua Wang,Yikai Wang,Ranran Li,Heye Fu,Hao Zhou,Dan Wu,Pan Yuang,Maoshuai He,Wenxian Wei,Tao Yang

Hydrogen has long been widely recognized as a promising carbon-free fuel with potential to tackle energy and environmental challenges owing to its high energy density and cleanliness. Water electrolysis offers an environmentally friendly method for hydrogen production from water and largely depends on the efficiency of electrocatalysts. Molybdenum diselenide (MoSe 2 ) has been regarded as one of the most promising earth-abundant and cost-effective catalysts for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Nevertheless, its catalytic activity has thus far remained below expectations. In this research, we introduce a vanadium-modulated Ni-MoSe 2 catalyst (NiV-MoSe 2 ), demonstrating outstanding catalytic performance towards HER with an overpotential of 74.5 mV at 10 mA cm −2 and a Tafel slope of 56.2 mV dec −1 . The enhancement of catalytic performance is highly likely attributed to the dual doping of vanadium and nickel. As a result, the intrinsic activity, electrochemical active surface area, and conductivity are significantly improved. These findings enable the NiV-MoSe 2 catalyst to be an exceptionally competitive alternative to noble metal-based catalysts, and may stimulate further studies in designing efficient HER catalysts through multi-heteroatom substitution.
