Vertically aligned Fe2TiO5 nanorods and coupling of NiMoO4/CoMoO4 as a hole-transfer cocatalyst for enhancing photoelectrochemical water oxidation performance

Baohua Ding,Haiyan Li,Ruonan Wang,Bohua Dong,Lixin Cao

Fe2TiO5, a promising photoanode material for photoelectrochemical (PEC) water splitting, is limited by its poor conductivity and short carrier diffusion length. Herein, a novel Fe2TiO5 nanorod photoanode coated with a cocatalyst NiMoO4/CoMoO4 has been designed for efficient PEC water splitting. The Fe2TiO5/NiMoO4/CoMoO4 photoanode shows a photocurrent density of 1.67 mA cm−2 at 1.23 V versus the reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE) under an irradiation of 100 mW cm−2, which is 2.25 times that of Fe2TiO5 nanorods (0.74 mA cm−2) at 1.23 V versus RHE. And the onset potential of Fe2TiO5/NiMoO4/CoMoO4 illustrates a 247 mV cathodic shift from that of the Fe2TiO5 nanorod photoanode. Moreover, Fe2TiO5/NiMoO4/CoMoO4 exhibits excellent stability at 1.23 V versus RHE under 2 h illumination. Further investigation indicates that NiMoO4/CoMoO4 modifies the surface states of Fe2TiO5 nanorods and effectively promotes the reaction kinetics at the semiconductor/electrolyte interface. This work emphasizes that the design of a nanorod structure and the loading of a cocatalyst provide a novel strategy for achieving excellent PEC performance.

A high mass loading flexible electrode with a sheet-like Mn3O4/NiMoO4@NiCo LDH on a carbon cloth for supercapacitors

Ruibin Liang,Si Liu,Jianrong Lin,Jingfei Dai,Jingyi Peng,Peiyuan Huang,Jianwen Chen,Peng Xiao

Mass loading is an important parameter to evaluate the application potential of active materials in high-capacity supercapacitors. Synthesizing active materials with high mass loading is a promising strategy to improve high performance energy storage devices. Preparing electrode materials with a porous structure is of significance to overcome the disadvantages brought by high mass loading. In this work, a Mn3O4/NiMoO4@NiCo layered double hydroxide (MO/NMO/NiCo LDH) positive electrode is fabricated on a carbon cloth with a high mass loading of 20.4 mg cm−2. The MO/NMO/NiCo LDH presents as a special three-dimensional porous nanostructure and exhibits a high specific capacitance of 815 F g−1 at 1 A g−1. Impressively, the flexible supercapacitor based on the MO/NMO/NiCo LDH positive electrode and an AC negative electrode delivers a maximum energy density of 22.5 W h kg−1 and a power density of 8730 W kg−1. It also retains 60.84% of the original specific capacitance after bending to 180° 600 times. Moreover, it exhibits 76.92% capacitance retention after 15 000 charge/discharge cycles. These results make MO/NMO/NiCo LDH one of the most attractive candidates of positive electrode materials for high-performance flexible supercapacitors.

Facile preparation of carbon, nitrogen co-doped NiMoO4·MoO2 heterostructures derived from polyoxometalate with ultrahigh energy density for zinc-ion capacitors

Yining Zhang,Yangyang Wen,Xiaoying Liu,Yingnan Zhang,Xiaoxue Jia,Wang Li,Hongxuan Tang,Hongfei Dou,Yannan Li,Yan Zhao

Aqueous zinc ion hybrid supercapacitors (ZHSC) have attracted great attention in recent years. However, their electrochemical performance is prohibited by the low energy density and poor cycling stability, mainly due to the difficulty in effectively activating the ionic and electronic conductivity of the cathode material. In this work, we innovatively propose a low-cost, precisely customized strategy for doping trace amounts of carbon and nitrogen elements into metal oxides to improve electrochemical performance. The carbon and nitrogen-doped NiMoO4·MoO2/NC heterostructures derived from polyoxometalates maintain high electrochemical activity while achieving high ionic conductivity. Trace amounts of carbon and nitrogen elements can significantly improve electronic conductivity and charge storage capacity. Due to the synergistic contribution, the composite structure with multi-redox sites exhibits a high specific capacity value of 364.96 F/g at 1 A/g in 1 M ZnSO4. A ZHSC was assembled with NiMoO4·MoO2/NC as the cathode and zinc sheet as the anode. After 10000 cycles, the capacitance retention rate still reached over 80 %. In addition, its energy density and power density can also reach 102 Wh Kg-1@4140 W Kg-1, which is higher than that of MoO2-based traditional supercapacitors. This strategy fully demonstrates the great practicality and development prospects of polyoxometalate derivatives for ZHSC.

Enhanced hydrogen production via catalytic water and urea oxidation in a hybrid acid-base electrolytic cell with NiFe-LDH/NiMoO4/NF

Sen Qiao,Chaoming Rao,Haiyan Chen,Min Xiong,Qiuhua Xu,Suqin Ci

The construction of crystalline-amorphous coupling structure is one of the effective strategies to enhance the performance of oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and urea oxidation reaction (UOR). Herein, NiFe-LDH/NiMoO 4 /NF with high oxygen evolution and urea oxidation performance was successfully prepared by electrodeposition of amorphous substances on the crystalline precursor of hydrothermal synthesis. Remarkably, the NiFe-LDH/NiMoO 4 /NF displays exceptional electrocatalytic performance for OER and UOR, with a potential of only 1.57 V vs. RHE at 100 mA cm −2 and the Tafel slope of 54.4 mV dec −1 for OER, high UOR activity with a potential of 1.45 mV@100 mA cm −2 and the Tafel slope of 20.4 mV dec −1 in 1.0 M KOH with 0.33 M urea solution. In a hybrid acid-base electrolysis system for urea oxidation-assisted H 2 production using NiFe-LDH/NiMoO 4 /NF as the anode electrode and Pt/C/NF as the cathode electrode, the process requires a cell voltage of only 0.55 V vs . RHE at 10 mA cm −2 . Moreover, this hybrid acid/base system demonstrates stable operation for 110 h with minimal attenuation at a current density of 100 mA cm −2 . These results indicate a facile strategy for the design of electrodes with crystalline-amorphous coupling structures for energy conversion.

Boosting Photocatalytic Simultaneous Hydrogen Evolution and Plastic Reforming via Surface Hydroxylation over NiMoO4/CdS Heterojunction: Interfacial Microenvironment and Electronic Structure Regulation

Zixu Hu,Wenjun Jiang,Yuxin Zhang,Ao Xu,Yangjie Wu,Liang Zhou,Juying Lei,Jinlong Zhang

The interfacial interaction between catalysts and substrate molecules plays a pivotal role in enhancing photocatalytic hydrogen evolution efficiency. Rational surface design and modification of photocatalysts can effectively reduce the activation energy barriers, enabling sustainable and high-performance hydrogen production. In this work, hydroxyl (-OH) groups were engineered into NiMoO 4 using a straightforward solvothermal method, resulting in an optimized interfacial microenvironment that promoted favorable reaction kinetics for enhanced photocatalytic hydrogen evolution. The incorporated -OH groups form hydrogen bonds with H 2 O molecules, creating a unique micro-environment that facilitates water molecule enrichment, activation, and dissociation. Notably, hydroxylation induced electronic structure modulation through charge redistribution, generating highly active Ni sites that lower the energy barrier for hydrogen reduction. The optimized hydroxylated NiMoO 4 /CdS (HNCS) composite photocatalyst exhibited exceptional photocatalytic performance, achieving a hydrogen evolution rate of 89.37 mmol g -1 h -1 with an apparent quantum yield (AQY) of 69.0% at 475 nm. The results demonstrate that hydrogen is predominantly derived from water, with lactic acid (LA) undergoing selective oxidation to form the high-value platform chemical pyruvic acid (PA). Notably, the system proves applicable to the aqueous-phase reforming of polylactic acid (PLA), achieving simultaneous hydrogen production and conversion of plastic waste into useful chemical products. This work provides fundamental insights into the mechanistic role of surface functional groups in promoting photocatalytic hydrogen generation.

Clever fusion of structure and function: A coupled sulfurization-driven OER performance study based on ZIF-67 nanoparticles and NiMoO4 nanorods

Weidong Liu,Jie Bai,Yaqiong Gong

Hydrogen fuel cells (HFCs) and water electrolysis are emerging clean energy technologies that can alleviate the problems of environmental pollution and energy shortage. Oxygen Extraction Reaction (OER) is a slow four-electron transfer process with a high energy barrier, and often regarded as the bottleneck of a series of clean energy technologies. In this paper, NiMoO 4 nanorods (denoted as NMO) were in situ grown on nickel foam substrate, and then ZIF-67 nanoparticles were assembled onto NiMoO 4 nanorods (denoted as NMO@ZIF-67). Finally, the surface layers of NiMoO 4 nanorods and ZIF-67 nanoparticles were vulcanized by hydrothermal treatment for 6 h to obtain the catalyst NiMoO 4 @NiMoCo-S-6 (denoted as NMO@NMC-S-6). In 1 M KOH aqueous solution, NMO@NMC-S-6 exhibited excellent electrochemical performance, only 176 mV and 243 mV overpotentials were required at current densities of 10 and 100 mA cm -2 , respectively, and Tafel slope of NMO@NMC-S-6 is 24.81 mV dec -1 . In addition, benefitting from the combined structure of nanorods and nanoparticles effectively prevented nanoparticles aggregation and enhanced its own structure and transport channel stability, NMO@NMC-S-6 showed remarkable stability in 20 h electrochemical test. This work brings a reference orientation for constructing cost-efficient alkaline OER catalyst through structure combination strategy.

NiMoS3 Nanorods as pH-Tolerant Electrocatalyst for Efficient Hydrogen Evolution

Jinxue Guo,Xinqun Zhang,Yanfang Sun,Lin Tang,Xiao Zhang

To meet the increasing demands for sustainable and clean hydrogen energy sources, development of pH-tolerant electrocatalysts with high-performance and low-cost toward hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is an important but challenging task. MoS2 is postulated as a promising candidate for HER in acidic solution, however, showing poor activity in alkaline media. Herein, to widen its application in various media, we first report the synthesis of NiMoS3 nanorods using a hydrothermal method that starts from NiMoO4 nanorods. The incorporation of Ni atoms in Mo–S could arouse the synergism of ternary Ni–Mo–S and create abundant defect sites, thus substantially improving the inherent catalytic activity and catalytic sites. More importantly, Ni endows Mo–S with excellent catalytic activity in alkaline solution. As a result, NiMoS3 exhibits large cathodic current, low overpotetnial, and stable durability for HER in H2SO4 and especially in KOH. The overpotetnial at current density of 10 mA cm–2 is as low as 126 mV in KOH, making it a promising candidate for HER electrocatalyst.

Effective modulating of the Mo dissolution and polymerization in Ni4Mo/NiMoO4 heterostructure via metal-metal oxide-support interaction for boosting H2 production

Yuhao Chen,Kaihang Yue,Jia-Wei Zhao,Zhengyang Cai,Xianying Wang,Ya Yan

Constructing low-cost, high-active and robust heterogeneous hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) electrocatalysts with strong metal–metal oxide-support interaction (SMMOSI) is still an urgent challenge for the development of anion exchange membrane water electrolysis (AEMWE), especially under high current density (e.g., 1 A cm −2 ). Herein, a hierarchical composite of heterogenous Ni 4 Mo/NiMoO 4 (NiMoO x ) nanoparticles (NPs) anchored on a mesoporous carbon CMK-3 (NiMoO x @CMK-3) is designed as a superior electrocatalyst for HER. Significantly, the strong interaction between heterogeneous NiMoO x NPs and CMK-3 supporting matrix effectively stabilize the catalytic active Ni 4 Mo/NiMoO 4 heterostructure by altering the local geometric and electronic structures, leading to maximumly exposure of active sites and promoted electron transfer ability. The optimized electrocatalyst exhibits outstanding HER activity with an extremely low overpotential and Tafel slope of 7 mV@10 mA cm −2 and 27.7 mV dec -1 , respectively, and can steadily operate at 100 mA cm −2 for 800 h. More significantly, owing to these HER merits, the AEMWE configuration with NiMoO x @CMK-3 (−) is also designed, resulting in low cell voltage of 1.965 V@1 A cm −2 and negligible degradation over 400 h@1 A cm −2 . Further ex/in-situ electrochemical spectra evidence that both the partial combined MoO 4 2- from NiMoO 4 and the newly formed MoO 4 2- originating from dissolved Mo in NiMoO x @CMK-3 could boost the fast generation of polymerized Mo 2 O 7 2- that could effectively accelerate the HER process in alkaline conditions by facilitating the formation of active Mo-H* intermediates. Moreover, theoretical calculation results demonstrate the upshifting of d-band center of Mo toward Fermi level for the heterogeneous NiMoO x and the strong charge distribution between the heterointerface could optimize adsorption free energies of H* (ΔG H* ) on the surface of Mo atoms.

Mo and Ni Coordinated Bimetallic Oxide as Catalyst in Modified Separators for Low-Capacity Decay Lithium Sulfur Batteries

Tingyi Wu,Huanglin Dou,Zhenxin Zhao,Junliang Zhou,Xiaomin Wang

Graphical The NiMoO 4 -modified separator can not only use its own strong polarity to chemisorption of polysulfides and effectively suppress the shuttle effect, but also can promote the mutual transformation between polysulfides of different phases, reduces the reaction potential barrier, and the redox kinetics is significantly improved. Besides, the hollow microsphere structure facilitates the penetration of electrolyte and establishes a pathway for ion/electron transport, which accelerates the Li + diffusion rate. Lithium-sulfur (Li−S) batteries are considered to be the most promising candidates for achieving low-cost, high-energy density systems. The serious shuttle effect of polysulfides (LiPS) and the sluggish redox kinetics have become major obstacles to the practical application of Li−S batteries. Herein, a hollow microsphere structure of transition bimetallic oxide nickel molybdate (NiMoO 4 ) was prepared by hydrothermal reaction and calcination method. It was used as a separator coating material to inhibit LiPS shuttle and promote efficient redox conversion of sulfur species. The hollow microsphere structure not only possesses a large internal space to physically confine LiPS but also exposes abundant active sites to enhance the redox kinetics of LiPS. The NiMoO 4 shows superior adsorption ability for LiPS and accelerated ion/electron transport rates compared to NiO, thus facilitating the anchoring-conversion-diffusion processes of polysulfides. Benefiting from this versatility, the Li−S batteries with NiMoO 4 -PP exhibit a high discharge specific capacity of 1354.5 mAh g −1 at 0.1 C. In addition, the battery exhibits excellent cycling stability with a capacity decay rate of 0.027% for 500 cycles at 2 C. These results demonstrate the potential application of NiMoO 4 -based electrocatalysts in high-performance Li−S batteries.

Hierarchical heterostructure engineering of amorphous nickel boride nanoparticles decorated N-doped NiMoO4 hollow nanostructures with enhanced interfacial conductivity for high-performance hybrid supercapacitors

Hongwei Che,Aifeng Liu

Constructing heterostructured electrode materials with unique nanoarchitectures and tailored electronic properties is regarded as a practicable approach to boost the energy density of hybrid supercapacitors (HSCs). Herein, a novel heterostructure comprising semiconductive nitrogen-doped nickel molybdate (N–NiMoO 4 ) hollow nanostructures and metalloid nickel boride (Ni x B) nanoparticles is designed and synthesized. Theoretical simulations and experimental analyses reveal that the nitrogen doping enhances the electrical conductivity of N–NiMoO 4 . In particular, the formation of an ohmic contact interface between N–NiMoO 4 and Ni x B reduces the barrier to electron/ion transport across the interface, thereby considerably improving the electrochemical reaction kinetics. Furthermore, the surface decoration of the N–NiMoO 4 hollow nanostructures with the Ni x B nanoparticles provides additional electroactive sites and enhances the overall electrochemical performance of the N–NiMoO 4 @Ni x B heterostructures. Consequently, the constructed N–NiMoO 4 @Ni x B heterostructures exhibit enhanced specific capacities (932 C g −1 at 1 A g −1 and 709 C g −1 at 10 A g −1 , respectively) and cyclic stability (93.6 % capacity retention after 5000 cycles). Moreover, the assembled HSC device using N–NiMoO 4 @Ni x B as the positive electrode can deliver an energy density of up to 53.1 Wh kg −1 at 802 W kg −1 and maintain 95.0 % capacity after 5000 cycles. These findings provide valuable insights for optimizing interface design and heterojunction engineering in metal-boride/molybdate-based composite electrodes for advanced HSCs.

Controlled synthesis of FeCo2O4@NiMoO4 core-shell nanostructures as a binder-free electrode for high-performance asymmetric supercapacitor with enhanced density and rate capability

Senyang Wang,Bo Huang,Shu Zhao,Zhangyong Li,Yixin Kang,Xuan Wang,Ling Li

FeCo 2 O 4 @NiMoO 4 /NF composites were synthesized by two-step hydrothermal method. • The core-shell nanosheet structure offers abundant active sites and ion diffusion. • The electrode delivers a high surface capacitance of 5210 mF cm −2 at 1 mA cm −2 . • An asymmetric supercapacitor achieves an extended voltage window of 1.7 V. • FeCo 2 O 4 @NiMoO 4 /AC supercapacitor achieves excellent energy density of 0.27 mWh cm −2 . The development of binder-free electrodes is critical for advancing high-performance supercapacitors, yet achieving both high areal capacitance and long-term stability remains a challenge. Herein, the core-shell FeCo 2 O 4 @NiMoO 4 /NF (FCO@NMO/NF) composite material was synthesized on nickel foam by a simple two-step hydrothermal method as the positive electrode for asymmetric supercapacitors. The prepared electrode leverages the advantages of porous nanosheets' abundant reactive sites and multimetallic synergistic effects. Consequently, the FCO@NMO/NF electrode delivers an exceptional areal capacitance of 5210 mF cm −2 at 1 mA cm −2 , which is 4.5 times higher than that of the pristine FeCo 2 O 4 electrode. Furthermore, an assembled asymmetric supercapacitor (ASC) with FCO@NMO/NF and activated carbon electrode (AC/NF) achieves a wide voltage window of 1.7 V, a high energy density of 0.27 mWh cm −2 , and outstanding cycling stability with 97.4% capacitance retention after 6500 cycles. Overall, the FCO@NMO/NF is a promising binder-free electrode material for next-generation energy storage devices. Download: Download high-res image (223KB) Download: Download full-size image

Facile Synthesis of N and P Co-Doped NiMoO4 Hollow Nanowires and Electrochemical Deposition of NiFe-Layered Double Hydroxide for Boosting Overall Seawater Splitting

Ping Yang,Menglei Ren,Congcong Jin,Honglong Xing

NiMoO4 (NM) nanowires coated on nickel foam (NF) were prepared by the facile hydrothermal method. After calcination at low temperature, the nitrogen and phosphorus were co-doped into bimetal NF@NM nanowires. The hollow nanowire structure could be obtained after low-temperature calcination and nonmetallic doping. The as-synthesized hollow NF@NiMoO4/N/P (NF@NM-NP) nanowires exhibit excellent hydrogen evolution reaction performance (with an overpotential of −164 mV at −100 mA cm−2) due to the existence of planar defects and the hollow structure. To further improve the catalytic activity in the oxygen evolution reaction, amorphous lamellar NiFe-layered double hydroxide (NiFe LDH) was deposited onto the NF@NM-NP nanowires via an electrochemical method to form core–shell NF@NM-NP@NiFe LDH, which deliver an overpotential of 218 mV at 100 mA cm−2. Furthermore, an asymmetric setup composed of NF@NM-NP hollow nanowires and core–shell NF@NM-NP@NiFe LDH electrode were fabricated for overall seawater splitting, which can deliver potentials of 1.46 and 1.70 V at current densities of 10 and 100 mA cm−2 in simulated alkaline seawater (1 M KOH and 0.5 M NaCl), respectively. This may provide an effective path for the formation of a green energy conversion system.
