The development of efficient and stable bifunctional electrocatalysts composed of Earth-abundant elements to facilitate both the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) in water splitting still presents considerable challenges. In this work, a ZnCoFe@NiS/NF catalyst featuring a three-dimensional spherical micro-flower structure supported on nickel foam was successfully prepared through a simple, multi-step hydrothermal synthesis method. Owing to its significantly enhanced specific surface area, abundance of active sites, and superior electron conductivity, the ZnCoFe@NiS/NF catalyst demonstrates outstanding bifunctional catalytic performance in 1 M KOH. At a current density of 10 mA cm − 2 , the overpotential is as low as 170 mV for the OER and 178 mV for the HER. Specifically, an overall water splitting electrolyzer constructed from ZnCoFe@NiS/NF requires only a remarkably low operating voltage of 1.52 V to achieve a current density of 10 mA cm − 2 , surpassing the performance of the majority of reported bifunctional metal sulfide electrocatalysts. Furthermore, the catalyst operates at a similarly low voltage of 1.72 V and maintains stability for more than 100 h at a current density of 50 mA cm − 2 . This work not only reveals the critical importance of controlling morphology and electronic properties for enhancing the kinetics of electrocatalytic reactions, but also offers a simple and effective synthetic route for the large-scale production of high-performance and highly stable overall water splitting electrocatalysts. Hollow micro- and nanostructured materials with controllable shapes are appealing materials for electrochemical energy storage devices with high energy and power densities. Herein, double-shelled hollow nickel sulfides with controlled shape (cube-, ellipsoid- and capsule-shaped) were successfully synthesized by using different morphological α-Fe 2 O 3 templates. The as-obtained nickel sulfides have uniform size and well-defined double shells that consist of crossed ultrathin NiS nanosheets. When evaluated as electrode materials for supercapacitors, the capsule-shaped structure exhibits the highest specific capacitance of 1159 F g −1 at a current density of 2 A g −1 due to its high specific surface area (100.2 m 2 g −1 ), low equivalent series resistance (0.80 Ω) and ion diffusive resistance. More importantly, the asymmetric capacitor NiS (capsule-shaped)||RGO@Fe 3 O 4 shows a high energy density of 43.7 Wh kg −1 at a power density of 664 W kg −1 (21.8 Wh kg −1 at 8000 W kg −1 ), and after 5000 charge–discharge cycles, 83.3% of its capacitance is remained at the current density of 5 A g −1 .

The hydrogen is described as a clean and sustainable alternative to fossil fuels in numerous energy systems. Hydrolysis is an important method for high purity, high volume hydrogen production. In order to accelerate the kinetics of hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in alkaline media, it is essential to explore efficient catalysts. In this paper, the nanoscale self-supported Mn-NiS/Mn-Ni 3 S 4 composite catalysts was assembled on nickel foam. Benefiting from the lattice distortion and vacancy defects caused by the doping of Mn elements, the catalysts exposed an increasing number of electrochemical surfaces and effective active sites, showing impressive electrochemical performance with a HER overpotential of only 94.2 mV at 10 mA/cm 2 and an OER overpotential of only 253 mV to drive 50 mA/cm 2 . Applying as the bifunctional catalysts, the Mn-NiS/Mn-Ni 3 S 4 couple only achieved a low voltage of only 1.52 V to drive 10 mA/cm 2 . This paper provides new ideas and references for the rational design of high-performance sulfide catalysts with non-precious metal composites.

Developing semiconductors with optimal bandgaps and enhancing their photocatalytic performance remain key challenges in achieving efficient hydrogen evolution from water splitting. TiO 2 nanoflowers with open architectures, which provide abundant active sites, show significant potential in this field. Additionally, the construction of photocatalysts using S-scheme heterojunctions has been proven to improve redox capacity, while the introduction of oxygen vacancies has been shown to increase efficiency. Therefore, in this study, NiS-loaded TiO 2 nanoflowers were fabricated by a simple template-free solvothermal method. Oxygen vacancies were constructed by partially reducing the composite with a low NiS concentration. The synergistic effect of the oxygen vacancies and heterojunctions greatly improved the visible-light response of the catalyst, and the degradation rate of rhodamine B reached 99.81 % in 3 h under visible light. The transient photocurrent response of 1.0 wt% NiS-TiO 2 nanoflowers was 47.52 μA·cm −2 and the rate of hydrogen evolution achieved 1782.28 μmol·g −1 ·h −1 , approximately 6.5 times higher than that of pristine TiO 2 nanoflowers. The transfer process of electrons was verified by calculation using density functional theory, and an electron transport mechanism for the S-scheme heterojunction is also proposed to illustrate the photocatalytic mechanism. The as-prepared NiS-loaded TiO 2 nanoflowers could be prime candidate for the photocatalytic hydrogen evolution from water splitting and degradation of organic pollutants.

In this work, nickel sulfide (NiS) submicron cubes, synthesized by an easy hydrothermal method, were investigated as an efficient electrocatalytic material of dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs), to our knowledge, for the first time. Part of the NiS submicron cubes were grown together in a hydrothermal procedure and formed the connected submicron cube cluster. The NiS submicron cubes (with a diameter of 300–800 nm) showed excellent electrocatalytic activity and presented superior photovoltaic performance when it was used as an electrocatalytic material for the counter electrode (CE) of DSSCs. The CE composed of the NiS submicron cubes could achieve a photovoltaic efficiency of 6.4%, showing their superior performance compared with the typical Pt electrode (which with the corresponding conversion efficiency was 5.3% at the same condition). The low-cost NiS submicron cube electrode could be a competitive candidate to replace the traditional Pt electrode in DSSCs. The simple composition procedure of NiS submicron cubes could enable the low-cost mass production of an efficient NiS submicron cube electrode to be easily accomplished.

Developing composite materials with the synergistic effects of heterogeneous structures and multiple components is considered as a promising strategy to achieve high-performance electromagnetic wave (EMW) absorbers. To further satisfy the demand of broadband and strong microwave absorption, a novel NiS/carbon nanofibers (CNFs)/porous carbon composite is successfully synthesized by hydrothermal and chemical vapor deposition using lotus leaves as a biomass carbon source. A few carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and uniformly dispersed Ni nanocrystals have also been found in the hybrid. Benefiting from the porous structure derived from lotus leaves, the combination of dielectric NiS, conductive carbon nanomaterials, and magnetic Ni nanoparticles, together with the three-dimensional conductive network of CNFs and CNTs, the remarkable EMW absorption properties with a minimum reflection loss up to −67.65 dB have been achieved at merely 2.32 mm. Besides, the widest effective absorption band can reach 5.9 GHz with a thin thickness of 2.07 mm, covering almost the entire Ku band. In addition, under the incident angle of 31°, the radar cross-section reduction value of LNSF-600 can reach 42.88 dBm2. Therefore, this work provides an efficient and facile method for manufacturing outstanding biomass-derived EMW absorbers.

Photocatalytic conversion of H 2 O and CO 2 into solar fuels is considered to be a green and renewable technology while photocatalytic performance is hampered by the severe recombination of photogenerated electron–hole pairs. Drawing inspiration from the concepts of the electrons transfer layer (ETL) and the holes transfer layer (HTL) in perovskite solar cells, a multicomponent photocatalyst SrTiO 3 /NiO/NiS that incorporates p–n heterojunction and Schottky junction is constructed for converting solar energy into easily storable solar fuels. The NiS and NiO play the roles analogy to the ETL and the HTL which accomplishes the reverse migration of electrons and holes, accordingly, SrTiO 3 /NiO/NiS exhibits a noticeable enhancement in photocatalytic performance. However, the lack of direct observation of charge transfer pathways in complex multicomponent photocatalysts makes it challenging to thoroughly investigate their catalytic mechanisms. Herein, the in situ irradiation X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (ISI–XPS) is employed to track photogenerated charges migration pathways between microscopic heterogeneous interfaces, thereby providing a comprehensive elucidation of the catalytic mechanism and heterojunction formation process by integrating the photoelectrochemical tests. This study not only serves as compelling evidence for the capability of ISI–XPS in directly and accurately tracking charge transfer pathways but also as an intriguing highlight within the catalyst design strategy.

Transition metal sulfides (TMS) have emerged as promising electrocatalysts for overall water splitting (OWS), owing to their cost-effectiveness, inherent abundant active sites and tunable electronic structures. However, several issues, e.g. , high overpotentials originating from the sluggish water dissociation, shielding of active sites and mass transfer resistance, as well as the modest long-duration electrocatalytic stability, are still enormous challenges. For this, the superwetting leafy Fe-doped nickel sulfide/cobalt sulfide nanoarrays on nickel foam (NF) (denoted as Fe-NiS/Co 2.67 S 4 /NF) are successfully designed and fabricated by the template-involved avenue. The interfacial electron re-arrangement of NiS/Co 2.67 S 4 induced by Fe doping optimizes the charge density distribution near the d-band center, promoting the adsorption-desorption of reaction intermediates. Additionally, the unique leafy architecture exhibits superhydrophilic sur−/interfaces, enabling efficient electrolyte penetration and accelerated bubble release during in-situ gas generation. Thereby, the advantages validated by comprehensive physical experiments and theoretical calculations endow Fe-NiS/Co 2.67 S 4 /NF with superior electrocatalytic performance in both hydrogen evolution reaction and oxygen evolution reaction, along with remarkable operational stability during high-current-density overall water electrolysis (1000 h at 500 mA cm −2 ). This work, besides the well-established reliable methodology for TMS nanoarrays, offers in-depth insights into catalytic optimization of electrocatalysts for high-efficiency OWS.

Transition metals sulfide-based nanomaterials have recently received significant attention as a promising cathode electrode for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) due to their easily tunable electronic, chemical, and physical properties. However, the poor electrical conductivity of metal-sulfide materials impedes their practical application in energy devices. Herein, firstly nano-sized crystals of cobalt-based zeolitic-imidazolate framework (Co-ZIF) arrays were fabricated on nickel-form (NF) as the sacrificial template by a facile solution method to enhance the electrical conductivity of the electrocatalyst . Then, the Co 3 S 4 /NiS@NF heterostructured arrays were synthesized by a simple hydrothermal route. The Co-ZIFs derived Co 3 S 4 nanosheets are grown successfully on NiS nanorods during the hydrothermal sulfurization process. The bimetallic sulfide-based Co 3 S 4 /NiS@NF-12 electrocatalyst demonstrated a very low overpotential of 119 mV at 10 mA cm −2 for OER, which is much lower than that of mono-metal sulfide NiS@NF (201 mV) and ruthenium-oxide (RuO 2 ) on NF (440 mV) electrocatalysts. Furthermore, the Co 3 S 4 /NiS@NF-12 electrocatalyst showed high stability during cyclic voltammetry and chronoamperometry measurements. This research work offers an effective strategy for fabricating high-performance non-precious OER electrocatalysts.

The strong interfacial interaction between heterostructured semiconductors plays a vital role in enhancing the separation and transport efficiency of photogenerated charge carriers for photocatalytic applications. In this study, we report a stepwise synthesis strategy to fabricate a high-efficiency ternary heterojunction composed of NiS-decorated MoS₂/CdS with strong interfacial bonding (NS@SI-MCS). Initially, an amorphous MoSₓ layer was deposited onto CdS nanorods via chemical bath deposition, followed by thermal treatment in a reductive H₂/Ar atmosphere to form crystalline MoS₂ with strong interfacial coupling. This treatment not only improved the crystallinity of MoS₂ but also introduced sulfur vacancies, promoting enhanced interfacial contact and thereby strengthening electronic interactions and charge transport across the heterojunction. Subsequently, NiS nanoparticles were deposited as cocatalysts to facilitate efficient electron extraction and proton reduction. Comprehensive structural, optical, and electrochemical characterizations confirmed the formation of a well-integrated heterostructure, characterized by improved light absorption, suppressed charge recombination, and enhanced conductivity. The resulting NS@SI-MCS composite exhibited a remarkable hydrogen evolution rate of 5243 μmol h⁻¹g⁻¹ under visible light, approximately 16.6 times higher than pristine CdS. This enhancement is attributed to the synergistic effects of strong interfacial coupling of MoS₂/CdS and the catalytic contribution of NiS. This work provides valuable insight into designing strongly coupled heterojunctions and offers a scalable, noble-metal-free strategy for efficient solar-to-hydrogen conversion.

Transition metal sulfides are promising candidates for energy storage applications due to their rich Faradaic activity and high theoretical specific capacities. However, their practical performance is often hindered by intrinsically low electrical conductivity and degradation from prolonged cycling. In this study, a binder-free composite electrode was fabricated by directly growing NiS/Ni 3 S 4 nanosheet arrays onto thermally activated carbon cloth through a facile one-step hydrothermal method. The conductive and robust substrate facilitates efficient charge transport while maintaining structural integrity during operation. The optimized NiS/Ni 3 S 4 @TACC-10 electrode delivers a high specific capacity of 285 mAh g −1 at 2 A g −1 and retains 63.1% of its capacity at 10 A g −1 . The corresponding hybrid supercapacitor exhibits an impressive energy density of 97.4 Wh kg −1 and maintains 102.6% of its initial capacitance after 3000 cycles at 20 A g −1 . Moreover, three such devices connected in series successfully powered red LEDs for over 20 min, highlighting their potential for real-world energy storage applications. These results offer a scalable and effective strategy for the development of high-performance electrochemical energy storage systems. Graphical Hierarchical NiS/Ni 3 S 4 nanosheet arrays directly grown on thermally activated carbon cloth deliver high capacity, excellent rate capability, and long-term cycling stability, demonstrating strong potential for next-generation hybrid supercapacitors.

The quest for high-performance OER electrocatalysts has been a focal point in the field of energy conversion and storage. Despite the promise shown by nickel sulfide-based materials, the enhancement of their catalytic activity through singular strategies has been found to be inadequate for achieving the desired comprehensive performance improvements. In this context, we introduce a novel V-doped FeO/NiS nanosheet array (V-FeO/NiS/NF) synthesized through a synergistic approach involving heteroatom doping and heterostructure engineering. This advanced material exhibits structural integrity, a three-dimensional nanosheet morphology, and superior electrical conductivity, which collectively contribute to its exceptional electrochemical performance. The V-FeO/NiS/NF electrode can reach a current density of 10 mA cm −2 with an impressively low overpotential of 213 mV and sustains its activity for an extended period of 196 hours, surpassing the stability and efficiency of many electrodes. Theoretical insights reveal that vanadium doping significantly lowers the adsorption free energy of key reaction intermediates, thereby facilitating the OER process. This study not only presents a robust and efficient OER electrocatalyst but also paves the way for the design of advanced, cost-effective nickel-based sulfide catalysts through strategic heteroatom incorporation and structural optimization.
