Development of proton exchange membranes (PEMs) with low methanol permeability and high ionic conductivity is an effective way to improve the lifespan and power density of direct methanol fuel cells (DMFCs). Here, we report a novel phosphoric acid (PA)-doped quaternary ammonium ion-modified poly (vinylidene fluoride) nanofiber composite PEM (QA@PVDF/SPEEK-PA) for DMFCs. Benefiting from the rich acid-base ion-pair interface (–NH 2 /-N(CH 3 ) 3 + and −SO 3 H/H 2 PO 4 - ) constructed within the membrane, QA@PVDF/SPEEK-PA exhibited an ultrahigh conductivity of up to 202.31 mS cm −1 at 80 °C, corresponding to 2.6 and 1.31 times the conductivity of SPEEK (77.8 mS cm −1 ) and commercial Nafion 211 (154.03 mS cm −1 ), respectively. More importantly, the introduction of 3D nanofibers within the membrane together with the formation of acid-base interactions led to the excellent methanol barrier effect over a wide methanol range. Even with a 10 M CH 3 OH fuel, the cross-current density of methanol remained at a mere 161.21 mA cm −2 , while the open-circuit voltage (OCV) of the fuel cell reached an impressive 0.73 V. The DMFC assembled with the membrane exhibited a peak power density (PPD) of 121.38 mW cm −2 , representing a 1.36-fold relative to that of Nafion 211. After 260 h of in-situ durability test, the OCV was reduced by only 7.49 %. These excellent results suggest that the PA-doped nanofiber composite PEMs are promising candidates for future DMFCs applications.

Graphene oxide (GO) membranes show immense promise in nanofiltration separation for water purification and recycling of water resources. However, pristine GO membranes often suffer from insufficient membrane stability due to swelling and low water permeance under high operation pressure, which severely limits the real-world utilization of GO membranes. Herein, a strategy involving surface modification of GO membrane with superhydrophilic polyamide (PA) layer combined with cross-linking with biurea (BU) amine, is proposed to fabricate highly permeable and robust GO membranes for dye removal from aqueous solution. The PA layer is prepared onto BU cross-linked GO membrane by in-situ interfacial polymerization, which results in superhydrophilic and negative-charged membrane surface. Moreover, the low reactivity of 2,5-diaminobenzenesulfonic acid (DBS) monomer contributes to low cross-linking degree and loose network of PA layer. The BU cross-linked GO laminates possess multi-level interlayer spacings and sufficient covalent interaction between GO interlayer due to crosslinking with BU, which offer large and robust transport channels for water molecules. PA@BU/GO hybrid membrane shows the optimum pure water permeability of 140.2 L·m −2 ·h −1 ·bar −1 , with water permeance and TB rejection rate of 67.4 L·m −2 ·h −1 ·bar −1 and 99.9 %, respectively. Moreover, the membrane exhibits impressive dye/salt selectivity (the dye/NaCl separation factor is up to 873), long-term operation stability and good anti-fouling property, which makes it a potential candidate for the fractionation of dye/salts in textile wastewater. This work provides a promising idea for the development of high-performance 2D membranes with high-efficiency water transport channels using the synergistic effect of superhydrophilic PA Layer and robust BU cross-linked GO laminates.

A post-treatment strategy, involving immersion in sodium hypochlorite solution, was found to be specifically effective in improving the reverse osmosis (RO) performance of polyethylene (PE) based thin film composite (TFC) polyamide (PA) membranes prepared from reverse phase interface polymerization (RIP) processes. RIP processes produced abundant amine groups on the PA surfaces to allow the formation of abundant PA-N(H)Cl intermediates, while the inertness of the PE substrates preserved them for self-coupling into azo linkages, -N N-. Due to the formation of the azo cross-linking structure, the salt rejection rate of the PA layer was enhanced, while the degradation of part of the -C( O)-NH- groups increased surface ionic groups at pH 8, improving water permeance. Experiments were conducted to determine the most suitable concentration, pH value, and treatment time of the sodium hypochlorite solution. Treatment with a sodium hypochlorite solution at 500 ppm and pH 8 for 4 min increased the permeance of the PA/PE TFC membrane from 1.59 ± 0.02 L·m −2 ·h −1 ·bar −1 to 1.63 ± 0.03 L·m −2 ·h −1 ·bar −1 , while the salt rejection rate increased from 98.64 ± 0.06% to 99.24 ± 0.08%. The membrane also maintained good operational stability, antifouling property, and enhanced alkaline stability.

Li 4 SiO 4 has been demonstrated as a promising adsorbent for CO 2 capture. However, Li 4 SiO 4 adsorbents from the conventional solid-state method usually exhibit dense microstructures and, thus, poor CO 2 capture performance. Treating Li 4 SiO 4 with organic acids has been proved effective to improve the microstructures. The commonly used acids such as acetic acid, citric acid and gluconic acid are too expensive, restricting the application of this modification technique. In addition, in the typical Li 4 SiO 4 -based CO 2 capture looping system, CO 2 usually exists in the desorption reactor. However, the effect of the existence of CO 2 at the desorption stage on adsorption performance has been rarely studied. Focusing on these two issues, this work employed pyroligneous acid (PA), a low-cost by-product of the fast pyrolysis of biomass, to modify the microstructures of Li 4 SiO 4 . It was found that modification by pyroligneous acid (PA) successfully improved the microstructures and enhanced the surface area of Li 4 SiO 4 adsorbent. As a result, the obviously improved CO 2 adsorption performance was achieved. In addition, the test results under CO 2 -containing desorption atmospheres indicated that the existence of CO 2 at the desorption stage decreased the adsorption performance due to the severe sintering caused by the existence of CO 2 at the desorption stage.

Photoacoustic (PA) imaging has emerged as a promising bio-imaging technique due to its non-invasive visualization of lesions at great penetration depths. Fluorescence (FL) imaging in the second near-infrared window (NIR-II, 1000–1700 nm) achieves a higher imaging resolution and lower background signals compared to NIR-I. However, the single imaging method possesses its own disadvantages. Thus, we have demonstrated ZIF-8–IR820–MnPc–HA nanoparticles (ZIMH NPs) that can achieve visualization and localization of tumors in mice models with the help of a dual-modality PA/NIR-II FL imaging performance. Meanwhile, these excellent nanoparticles also induce the efficient generation of singlet oxygen (1O2) upon 808 nm laser illumination, and display excellent photodynamic therapy efficacy in cells, further indicating their potential application for in vivo PDT. In ZIMH NPs, hyaluronic acid (HA) impressively acts as a “sponge”, enhancing the generation of 1O2 and facilitating the cellular therapeutic effects. We believe that ZIF-8–IR820–MnPc–HA NPs present a brand-new strategy for the exploration of efficient PDT photosensitizers with dual-modality imaging performance for use in various biomedical applications.

Biodegradable, a new revolutionary concept, is shaping the future design of biomedical implants that need to serve only as a temporary scaffold. Magnesium appears to be the most promising biodegradable metal, but challenges remain in its corrosion-controlling and uncertain biocompatibility. In this work, we employ chemical conversion and alternating dip-coating methods to anchor and deposit an Mg ion-integrated phytic acid (Mg-PA) coating on Mg, which is supposed to function both corrosion-controlling and osteo-compatible. It was ascertained that PA molecules were covalently immobilized on a chemically converted Mg(OH)2 base layer, and more PA molecules were deposited subsequently via chelating reactions with the help of additive Mg ions. The covalent immobilization and the Mg ion-supported chelating deposition contribute to a dense and homogeneous protective Mg-PA coating, which guarantees an improved corrosion resistance as well as a reduced degradation rate. Moreover, the Mg-PA coating performed osteo-compatible to promote not only bioactivity of bonelike apatite precipitation, but also induced osteoblast cells adhesion and proliferation. This is ascribed to its nature of PA molecule and the biocompatible Mg ion, both of which mimic partly the compositional structure of bone. Our magnesium ion-integrated PA-coated Mg might bode well for the future of biodegradable bone implant application.

Polyamide (PA) based thin film composite forward osmotic (TFC-FO) membranes were prepared through inter-facial polymerization (IP) processes on porous cellulose acetate (CA) substrates. A dual solvent modification process of adding DMF in the aqueous phase followed by activation with methanol was found to be able to simultaneously improve the permselectivity and anti-fouling capability of the modified membranes. On top of the acidic CA substrates, DMF could not only absorb the HCl formed in the IP processes, but also chemically bind with the PA matrix by reaction with MPD monomers, leading to formation of homogeneous thin and flat PA layers, while methanol activation further swelled the PA matrix, repaired defects and optimized water permeating channels. Using 1 M NaCl solution as the draw solution, the water flux of the CA/PA-DMF4-ME1 membrane was twice that of the pristine membrane, and 24% increase in J w /J s value from 182 to 225 L·mol −1 . Its J w /J s value could be further increased 10 times to 2000 L·mol −1 using 1 M Na 2 SO 4 solution as draw solution. RO tests for the CA/PA-DMF4-ME1 membranes showed 6-fold increase in water permeance, from 1.16 to 7.02 L·m −2 ·h −1 ·bar −1 , as well as increase in NaCl rejection from 94.8% to 97.7% from pristine membrane.

A novel porous xerogel of phytic acid (PA)-modified polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) was fabricated via a straightforward condensation reaction between PVA, urea, and PA. Besides serving as crosslinking agents, urea and PA also act as the pore forming agents and adsorptive functional groups of this xerogel , respectively. The decomposition and gasification of urea during synthesis formed an interconnected porous structure, dramatically raising the content of PA groups in the material as well as expose more adsorptive groups on its surface. This resultant structural characteristic allows the material to display outstanding adsorption capacity and rapid adsorption rate. Furthermore, the utilization of a compound crosslinker (urea/PA) can provide PVA with a sturdier crosslinking structure compared to the use of the two agents separately. As a result, the material shows excellent reusability, and its adsorption capacity can reach up to 89% of its initial adsorption capacity after five adsorption–desorption cycles. Density function theory (DFT) calculations demonstrated that there is a strong interaction between PA and uranium ions, conferring the material an impressive selectivity for uranium. This work could broaden insights into the tailored design and synthesis of polymer materials for the extraction of uranium.

With the development of nanotechnology, a theranostics nanoplatform can have broad applications in multimodal image-guided combination treatment in cancer precision medicine. To overcome the limitations of a single diagnostic imaging mode and a single chemotherapeutic approach, we intend to combat tumor growth and provide therapeutic interventions by integrating multimodal imaging capabilities and effective combination therapies on an advanced platform. So, we have constructed IO@MnO2@DOX (IMD) hybrid nanoparticles composed of superparamagnetic iron oxide (IO), manganese dioxide (MnO2), and doxorubicin (DOX). The nano-platform could achieve efficient T2-T1 magnetic resonance (MR) imaging, switchable photoacoustic (PA) imaging, and tumor microenvironment (TME)-responsive DOX release and achieve enhanced synergism of magnetic hyperthermia and chemotherapy with PA/MR bimodal imaging. The results show that IMD has excellent heating properties when exposed to an alternating magnetic field (AMF). Therefore, it can be used as an inducer for tumor synergism therapy with chemotherapy and hyperthermia. In the TME, the IMD nanoparticle was degraded, accompanied by DOX release. Moreover, in vivo experimental results show that the smart nanoparticles had excellent T2-T1 MR and PA imaging capabilities and an excellent synergistic effect of magnetic hyperthermia and chemotherapy. IMD nanoparticles could significantly inhibit tumor growth in tumor-bearing mice with negligible side effects. In conclusion, smart IMD nanoparticles have the potential for tumor diagnosis and growth inhibition as integrated diagnostic nanoprobes.

The development of high-performance membranes for heavy metal remediation remains a key challenge in advanced water treatment. In this work, a hierarchically structured composite membrane was fabricated via a self-confined growth strategy, in which Zn(OH) 2 nanostrands immobilized MoS 2 and directed the in-situ growth of ZIF-8, forming a defect-free interlayer for robust polyamide (PA) deposition. The resulting ZM15-PA membrane exhibits a highly hydrophilic surface with a contact angle of 31.5°, a strong positive surface charge under acidic conditions, and excellent water permeability reaching 83.5 L m -2 h -1 . Most notably, the membrane achieves an ultrahigh Pb(II) rejection rate of 99.2%, consistently reducing effluent concentrations to less than 10 μg L -1 , even in the presence of coexisting ions and dissolved organic matter. Mechanistic investigations reveal that Pb(II) removal is governed by synergistic mechanisms including electrostatic repulsion, molecular sieving, and coordination interactions involving Pb-S, Pb-O, and Pb-N bonds. Furthermore, the membrane demonstrates outstanding antifouling resistance, long-term operational stability, and antibacterial efficiency exceeding 99% under photo-Fenton conditions. These findings highlight the promise of self-confined growth strategies for stabilizing two-dimensional materials and developing multifunctional membranes for selective heavy metal removal in complex water matrices.

To improve interface compatibility between ZIF-7 particles (PTs) and polyamide (PA) and reverse osmosis (RO) performance of thin film nano-composite (TFN) membranes, ZIF-7-NH 2 (x) particles (PTs) with different levels of -NH 2 substitution were synthesized by reacting Zn(NO 3 ) 2 with mixed ligand under different preparation conditions. The impact of their residual surface functional groups (SFGs) on the formation of inter-phase covalent bonds (ICBs) in PA separating layers were investigated relating to the inter-phase compatibility and salt rejection performance of the formed composite RO membranes. Doping ZIF-7-NH 2 PTs with ICBs could avoid the expansion of PA in acidic condition. Surprisingly high chemical stability was observed for ZIF-7-NH 2 PTs wrapped in the PA separating layers in TN membranes in the pH range of 2–13. TN(50)-0.15 membranes with strong ICBs showed 3 times higher water flux of 76 L·m −2 ·h −1 under 5.5 MPa at a high salt rejection of 98.7 %.

The efficient removal of dyes and separation from dissolved salts are crucial for the recovery of valuable resources from saline textile wastewater. In this study, hollow fiber membranes were fabricated using the non-solvent-induced phase separation (NIPS) method and then improved with a dual-coating process to create effective nanofiltration (NF) membranes. First, hollow fiber substrates with Fe3+were fabricated using NIPS. Subsequently, the inner surface of the membrane was coated with phytic acid (PA) and polyethyleneimine (PEI), which increased the thickness of the separation layer and reduced the size of the surface pores, thereby improving the separation efficiency. The loose NF membrane exhibited superior water permeance (pure water permeability of 280 L·m−2·h−1·bar−1) and, with dye rejection rates consistently exceeding 95%, also remarkable dye/salt selectivity (with separation factors of CR/NaCl: 64.08, CR/Na2SO4: 21.21, CBB/NaCl: 14.75, and CBB/Na2SO4: 10.74). The flux recovery of the membrane was over 80% for humic acid, and the membrane exhibited favorable stability under acidic and alkaline conditions, confirming its excellent antifouling and stability performance. In conclusion, this study presents a straightforward and effective approach for fabricating hollow fiber loose NF membranes, underscoring their potential for treating hypersaline wastewater and resource recovery.
