Removal of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) from textile dyeing sludge by ultrasound combined zero-valent iron/EDTA/Air system

Xiaoyuan Man,Xun-an Ning,Haiyuan Zou,Jieying Liang,Jian Sun,Xingwen Lu,Jiekui Sun

This paper proposes a combined ultrasound (US) and zero-valent iron/EDTA/Air (ZEA) system to remove polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) from textile dyeing sludge . The removal efficiencies of 16 PAHs using ZEA, US/Air (air injected into the US process), and US/ZEA treatments were investigated, together with the effects of various operating parameters. The enhanced mechanisms of US and the role of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in removing PAHs in the US/ZEA system were explored. Results showed that only 42.5% and 32.9% of ∑16 PAHs were removed by ZEA and US/Air treatments respectively, whereas 70.1% were removed by US/ZEA treatment, (with favorable operating conditions of 2.0 mM EDTA, 15 g/L ZVI, and 1.08 w/cm 3 ultrasonic density). The US/ZEA system could be used with a wide pH range. US led to synergistic improvement of PAHs removal in the ZEA system by enhancing sludge disintegration to release PAHs and promoting ZVI corrosion and oxygen activation. In the US/ZEA system, PAHs could be degraded by ROS (namely OH, O 2 − /HO 2 , and Fe(IV)) and adsorbed by ZVI, during which the ROS made the predominant contribution. This study provides important insights into the application of a US/ZEA system to remove PAHs from sludge.

Alternating trilinear decomposition of highly overlapped chromatograms for simultaneously targeted quantification of 15 PAHs in samples of pollution source

Xiang-Dong Qing,Huai-Bo Zhou,Xiao-Hua Zhang,Hai-Long Wu,Chang-Ya Chen,Su-Wen Xu,Shuang-Shuang Li

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are of worldwide environmental concern because of their properties of carcinogenicity, mutagenicity and teratogenicity. In the work, a smart combination of gel permeation chromatography-diode array detector and second-order calibration based on alternating trilinear decomposition (ATLD-GPC-DAD) is proposed for simultaneous targeted identification and quantification of 15 PAHs in atmospheric pollution sources such as flue-dust and greasy-dirt samples. No need of tedious sample pretreatment and specific PAHs separation column, severely overlapped chromatograph peaks are successfully resolved by the ATLD-GPC-DAD method even with only 3 s of difference in retention times. Accurate quantitative results of 15 PAHs are achieved by using the developed method even in the presence of unexpected interferents. The limits of detection range from 0.94 ng mL −1 to 48.86 ng mL −1 , and the average recoveries are in the range of (81.2 ± 1.0)% to (108.9 ± 11.6)% for flue-dust samples and (89.7 ± 3.4)% to (107.5 ± 8.0)% for greasy-dirt samples. The sensitivity and selectivity of analytes is significantly improved with the aid of “mathematical separation” of the method. These results indicate that it opens a promising analytical strategy for control of PAHs emissions and management of urban air quality.

Comparative analysis of two new zebrafish models: The cyp1a low-expression line and cyp1a knockout line under PAHs exposure

Shaolin Xie,Yongyong Feng,Aiguo Zhou,Zhiyuan Lu,JixingZou

Cytochrome P450 1 (CYP1) is an important enzyme family involved in the metabolism of pollutants, and used as a biomarker to monitor environmental pollution. In this study, a fluorescence-labeled cyp1a zebrafish line, named as KI ( cyp1a +/+ -T2A-mCherry) (KICM), was originally constructed to monitor dioxin-like compounds in the environment. However, the cyp1a gene expression in the KICM line was inhibited by the fluorescence labeling, thus leading to a significantly increased sensitivity of KICM zebrafish line to PAHs. Then, a cyp1a knockout zebrafish line, named KOC, were constructed for comparative analysis with the cyp1a low-expression line. Interestingly, knockout of the cyp1a gene did not increase the sensitivity of zebrafish to PAHs as significantly as the cyp1a low-expression line. So, the expression levels of related genes in the aryl hydrocarbon receptor pathway were analyzed and the results showed that the expression level of cyp1b in KOC group was significantly higher than that of wild type and KICM under the same PAH exposure. This indicated that the effect of losing cyp1a was compensated by inducing expression of cyp1b . In conclusion, two new zebrafish models including cyp1a low-expression line and cyp1a knockout line were constructed in this study, which may provide a convenient model for subsequent studies on the toxicity mechanism of PAHs and the role of cyp1a in detoxification.

Developments of cyclodextrin-coated Fe3O4@Fe0 nanoparticles to both efficiently activate persulfates and rapidly access hydrophobic PAHs in water

Yaling Wang,Maolin Wang,Qing Xie,Xiyun Cai

We report new activated persulfate systems with cyclodextrin (CD)-coated Fe 3 O 4 @Fe 0 nanoparticles (Fe 3 O 4 @Fe 0 -CD) that are characterized by both highly activating persulfates and rapidly accessing hydrophobic PAHs. Fe 3 O 4 @Fe 0 -β-CD displays chain-like structure of core–shell Fe 3 O 4 @Fe 0 nanoparticles coated with a CD layer (about 5.9 nm). CD coating stabilizes the polycrystalline structure of Fe 3 O 4 @Fe 0 nanoparticles and accelerates mass transfer of PAHs in water, thereby making Fe 3 O 4 @Fe 0 -β-CD intrinsically stable and reactive. Fe 3 O 4 @Fe 0 -β-CD/PS, featured by high yields of highly reactive Fe(IV), had about 30-fold rate constants of naphthalene (Nap) in water as much as Fe 3 O 4 @Fe 0 /PS. Fe 3 O 4 @Fe 0 -β-CD/PS completely removed Nap in water during 13 of total 18 supplementations of Nap and/or PS, whereas Fe 3 O 4 @Fe 0 /PS completely removed Nap only at the first supplementation of Nap. Likewise, Fe 3 O 4 @Fe 0 -β-CD/PS completely removed Nap in simulated groundwater, and degraded four PAHs in soils by >63%. This study may provide a technical basis for the developments of new PS activators to remove recalcitrant hydrophobic contaminants in water and soils.

Remediation of industrial site soil contaminated with PAHs using stage persulfate oxidation activated by Fe2+ chelated with sodium citrate

Yue Gao,Yanan Xue,Jing Ji,Kai Zhen,Xuejiao Tang,Peng Zhang,Cuiping Wang,Hongwen Sun

The remediation for industrial site soil has attracted public concerns because of the hazardous and hydrophobic properties of organic pollutants existed in the soil. The persulfate oxidation activated by Fe 2+ chelated with sodium citrate (PS/Fe 2+ /SC) was used to remediate different types of industrial site soils in the present study. The maximum removal rates of Σ16 PAHs in the Nanjing site soil (NJS) and Hefei site soil (HFS) were 73.6% and 85.8% after the second-stage oxidation, respectively. The late oxidation stages couldn't enhance the degradation efficiency of PAHs due to the increase of high crystalline Fe mineral phases both in the NJS and HFS, which significantly decreased the Fe 2+ /Fe 3+ recycle and further inhibited the reactive oxygen species production during the remediation. The remediation using PS/Fe 2+ /SC could change the soil physicochemical properties , such as the functional groups, specific surface area (SSA), total pore volume (TPV) and some UV spectral parameters of soil particles. Additionally, the oxidation of PS/Fe 2+ /SC also altered the composition of soil dissolve organic matters, especially the fulvic acid , which further affected the Fe 2+ oxidation. The study mainly discloses the mechanism of limitation using persulfate oxidation activated by Fe materials at late oxidation stage.

Metabolism and elimination kinetics of mono-hydroxylated PAHs metabolites following single exposure to different combinations of PAH4 in rats

Miao Yang,Kanmin Mao,Xin Cao,Hongjuan Liu,Xinzheng Wang,Weifeng Mao,Liping Hao

The metabolism of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and the elimination kinetics of their mono-hydroxylated metabolites (OH-PAHs) following single exposure to different combinations of four PAHs (PAH4) were studied. Male Sprague–Dawley rats were orally exposed to a single dose of benzo[a]pyrene (B[a]P) or PAH2 (B[a]P + chrysene), PAH3 (B[a]P + chrysene + benz[a]anthracene), and PAH4 (B[a]P + chrysene + B[a]A + benzo[b]fluoranthene) with each combination adjusted to the same dose of individual compound. OH-PAHs including 3-hydroxybenzo[a]pyrene, 3-hydroxychrysene, 3-hydroxybenz[a]anthracene, and 1-hydroxypyrene (1-OHP) were detected in serum and urine samples collected at six intervals over a 72-h period post-dosing. The hepatic mRNA levels of cytochrome P450 (CYPs) were determined to ascertain the expression induction of PAHs metabolic enzymes. Results showed OH-PAHs (except 1-OHP) peaked within 8 h in serum and were excreted from urine within 24–48 h. The serum and urinary concentration of 3-hydroxybenzo[a]pyrene was significantly increased after PAH4 exposure compared with other PAHs combinations. Inversely, urinary concentration of 3-hydroxychrysene was decreased after PAH4 exposure, and the kinetics of 3-hydroxybenz[a]anthracene or 1-OHP were not different depending on the PAHs combinations. Also, CYPs were markedly induced by PAHs. Notably, the induction levels of CYP1A1 and CYP1B1 were significantly higher after PAH4 exposure compared with B[a]P exposure. The results indicated the metabolism of B[a]P was accelerated after PAH4 exposure which might be partly due to the induction of CYPs. These results confirmed PAHs are rapidly metabolized and suggested potential interactions of PAHs may happen among PAH4 mixture.

A systematic study on the chemical model of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons formation from nutrients (glucose, amino acids, fatty acids) in food

Qiuyi Lin,Haolin Zhang,Xiaomei Lv,Ruiwei Xie,Bing-Huei Chen,Yu-Wen Lai,Lei Chen,Hui Teng,Hui Cao

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), prominent carcinogens formed during food processing, pose health risks through long-term consumption. This study focuses on 16 priority PAHs in the European Union, investigating their formation during pyrolysis. Glucose, amino acids and fatty acids are important food nutrients. To further explore whether these nutrients in food form PAHs during heating, a single chemical model method was used to heat these nutrients respectively, and GC–MS/MS was used to identify and quantify the obtained components. Glucose is the most basic nutrient in food, so the influence of water, pH, temperature and other factors on the formation of PAHs was studied in the glucose model. At the same time, the models of amino acids and fatty acids were used to assist in improving the entire nutrient research system. According to our results, some previously reported mechanisms of PAHs formation by fatty acids heating were confirmed. In addition, glucose and amino acids could also produce many PAHs after heating, and some conclusions were improved by comparing the intermediates of PAHs from three types of nutrients.

Terminal Modification of Poly(Ethylene Furanoate) With Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs): Leveraging π–π Interactions and Plasticization for Properties Enhancement

Jinpeng Liang,Zhigang Shen,Haijun Xiao,Yanan Qin,Nan Sun,Danli Nie,Yuxiang Xie,Liping Yang,Baoqing Shentu,Xinming Pu

Poly(ethylene furanoate) (PEF), a sustainable alternative to poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET), exhibits superior gas barrier properties but faces challenges in impact toughness and slow crystallization, limiting its industrial adoption. This study introduces a novel terminal modification strategy using polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) to synergistically enhance PEF's performance through π–π stacking interactions, plasticization, and crystallization optimization. By incorporating PAHs (9-PBA/1-NA) as terminal modifiers, modified PEFB x and PEFN x polyesters demonstrate accelerated crystallization (15 vs. 33 min for neat PEF) and increased crystallinity (53% vs. 41%). The PAH-driven π–π stacking and V-shaped B(OH) 2 groups in 9-PBA promote chain folding and ordered packing, significantly improving oxygen barrier performance (40.9% reduction in permeability coefficient) and mechanical properties. Remarkably, PEFB 0.5 achieves a 277% increase in elongation at break and a 229% enhancement in tensile modulus compared to unmodified PEF. Furthermore, the method integrates reactive extrusion with injection molding, offering a scalable and industrially viable route for producing high-performance PEF with balanced processability, barrier properties, and mechanical strength.

Effect of UV exposure and natural aging on the in vitro PAHs bioaccessibility associated with tire wear particles in soil

Qian Zhang,Xinyan Xu,Chenzhuo Song,Dengke Zhang,Yi Kong,Xinyi Cui

Tire wear particles (TWP), as an emerging type of microplastics, are a significant source of contaminants in roadside soils due to their high concentration of pollutants, including polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). This study explored the impact of ultraviolet (UV) exposure and natural aging on the in vitro bioaccessibility of PAHs associated with TWP in soil on a China-wide scale. Our findings suggested that UV exposure amplified the negative charge of TWP by 75 % and increased the hydrophobic groups on the particle surface. The bioaccessibility of 3- and 4-ring PAHs in TWP was significantly ( p  < 0.05) heightened by UV exposure. After 20 types of soils containing 2 % UV-exposed TWP underwent natural aging, the bioaccessibility of PAHs saw a significant decrease ( p  < 0.05) to 16–48 %, compared to 28–96 % in the unaged group. Soil pH and electrical conductivity (EC) were the two primary soil properties positively influencing the reduction of in vitro PAHs concentration and PAHs bioaccessibility. According to the prediction results, soils in southern China presented the highest potential region for the release of bioaccessible PAHs from TWP, highlighting the regional specificity of environmental impact. Our study provides valuable insights into the biological impact of PAHs associated with TWP on a regional scale, and offers scientific evidence for targeted soil risk management strategies.

Artificially synthesized bacterial consortia improve remediation of As-PAHs co-contaminated soil: rational design, efficiency improvement, and environmental parameter regulation

Meng Zhou,Jianqiu Zhu,Tao Yu,Mingzhi Li,Xiangwu Yao,Baolan Hu

Artificially constructed microbial consortia offer a promising strategy for remediating soils co-contaminated with heavy metals and organic pollutants. However, the functional roles of individual members and the environmental responses of such consortia remain insufficiently understood. In this study, a synthetic bacterial consortium composed of Rhodococcus qingshengii , Sphingomonas paucimobilis , and Xanthobacter agilis was assembled for the remediation of As-PAHs co-contaminated soil. After 7 days of incubation, the consortium achieved 65.6% PAHs degradation, representing a 16.6% increase relative to the control, whereas the increase in arsenic oxidation was limited (26.9% vs. 25.8% in the control). Comparative experiments showed that the three-strain consortium outperformed individual strains and binary combinations, with residual PAHs decreasing to 0.246 mg/kg and the proportion of As(V) increasing to 72.4% after 14 days. These results support the use of the consortium over simpler strain combinations and suggest non-additive functional interactions among the selected strains. Supplementation with vitamin B 2 , vitamin B 12 , and siderophore further improved PAHs degradation, with siderophore showing the strongest enhancement of PAHs removal. Moisture-controlled experiments suggested that the enhanced remediation performance was mainly associated with biological activity rather than moisture input alone. Environmental parameter analysis showed that the consortium remained active across pH 5.0–9.0 and 15–30 °C, with stronger PAHs removal under neutral to mildly alkaline conditions and at higher temperatures. Overall, this study demonstrates that rational consortium design can enhance PAHs removal in As-PAHs co-contaminated soil and provides a preliminary basis for understanding strain complementarity and environment-dependent remediation responses in synthetic microbial systems.

α-Fe2O3-regulated reactive free radicals generation in NaClO oxidation system for efficient remediation of PAHs-contaminated industrial site soil

Xiaojun Hu,Yufeng Chen,Ziyao Mi,Bo Wang,Yanyan Du,Xinyu Wang,Jingxian Jiang

The remediation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs)-contaminated soil has attracted widespread attention these years, ascribed to PAHs are environmental persistent, carcinogenic, teratogenic, and mutagenic, posing serious threats to human beings and ecosystem. Existing advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) for PAHs remediation are always constrained by expensive cost, strong operating conditions dependence and incomplete decomposition. To overcome these limitations, this study proposed an innovative and effective α-Fe 2 O 3 /NaClO catalytic oxidation system to realize reinforced PAHs degradation in industrial site soil. Under the determined optimal mass ratio of α-Fe 2 O 3 /NaClO at 24:1, the combined system demonstrated an increase in PAHs degradation efficiency by 17.9% and 57.3% in comparison with NaClO or α-Fe 2 O 3 employed individually, with the NaClO concentration fixing at 2000 mg/L and initial solution pH setting at 5. The primary reactive free radicals responsible for PAHs degradation were identified as •OH and O 2 · − , while ClO · and Cl 2 · − were evidenced to make contributions as well. In addition, direct electron transfer between α-Fe 2 O 3 and PAHs also participated in PAHs oxidation. Phytotoxicity tests and T.E.S.T. results elucidated the alleviated toxicity of soil remediated by the α-Fe 2 O 3 /NaClO system, further manifesting the practical applicability of this remediation strategy. This research highlighted the great potential of α-Fe 2 O 3 /NaClO catalytic oxidation system in future remediation of PAHs-contaminated soil.

Responses of soil bacterial communities and PAH-degrading genes to PAHs during soil self-purification: Evidence from a microcosm experiment

Xian Zhou,Xuwei Li,Chao Lu,Jian Wang,Chao Qin,Wanting Ling

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are persistent environmental pollutants threatening soil ecosystems and human health. While soil microbial communities possess intrinsic PAH degradation potential, the dynamics of bacterial populations and degradation-associated genes during natural attenuation remain poorly understood. This study investigated the self-purification capacity of PAH-contaminated soil through a 32-day microcosm experiment using three model PAHs: naphthalene (NAP), phenanthrene (PHE), and pyrene (PYR). Results demonstrated high PAH dissipation rates (94.36 %, 72.60 %, and 47.70 % for NAP, PHE, and PYR, respectively). High-throughput sequencing revealed that PAH exposure (10–100 mg kg −1 ) shifted bacterial community structure, enriching Actinobacterial taxa (Mycobacterium, Rhodococcus, Nocardioides) linked to PAH degradation and strengthening bacterial interactions. Quantitative PCR further indicated substrate-specific gene responses: Actinobacteria harboring nahAC preferentially degraded NAP, while nidA and phe genes were upregulated under PHE/PYR stress. These findings highlight Actinobacteria as keystone degraders and propose leveraging microbial community assembly strategies to optimize bioremediation of PAH-contaminated soils.
