Design and fabrication of bio-based functional composite materials with antibacterial, antioxidant, and improved mechanical properties based on poly (butylene adipate-co-terephthalate) (PBAT) for food packaging

Shengnan Huang,Bo Li,Shaowen Huang,Yanwen Wang,Li Zhang,Juan Li,Xiaogang Yin

The PBAT/epoxy chain extender (ADR-4468) film, with its competitive pricing, excellent biodegradability, and outstanding mechanical properties, stands out. Through experimental design, quercetin (QR) with antibacterial and antioxidant properties was effectively grafted onto the epoxy chain extender (ADR-4468), resulting in the successful synthesis of the functional modifier A-QR. PBAT composite films containing different weight percentages (0.2, 0.4, 0.6, 0.8, and 1% w/w) of A-QR were prepared using extrusion blow molding technology. QR and ADR are chemically bonded together, forming a strong and tightly knit composite. The composites exhibit excellent composite effects and outperform single-component blends, reducing A-QR migration, improving mechanical properties, and enhancing the barrier properties of the composite film. Structural, mechanical, and water barrier properties, antibacterial and antioxidant properties, as well as freshness preservation effects of the film, were analyzed. A-QR and PBAT formed a cross-linked network structure through chain extension reactions. Tensile strength increased from 19.7 MPa to 37.9 MPa, representing a 92.4% improvement. Antioxidant activity reached up to 65%. It exhibited excellent antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli. The maximum total migration was only 0.7 mg/dm 2 , significantly below the specified overall migration limit (OML). PBAT/A-QR films successfully extended the shelf life of bananas, strawberries, apples, and oyster mushrooms due to their excellent antioxidant, antibacterial, and water barrier properties.

Esterification and Acidolysis Controlled Multifunctional PBAT/Thermoplastic Starch (TPS) Films with Nano Mica Exfoliated by Critic Acid: Regulable Degradation, Excellent UV Resistance, Enhanced Interfacial Compatibility, and High Water Vapor Barrier

Fengqing Chen,Yan Feng,Feixiang Yin,Teng Huang,Qiao Kang,Dan Xie,Junhui Zhu,Yiping Wen,Baiyu Jiang,Jinfeng Dai

Multifunctional value-added biodegradable materials are significant for addressing issues of plastics waste in a green, cost-effective, and energy-saving way. In this work, the nano mica (Mica) was both exfoliated and interfacial double esterified by critic acid (CA) in a facile one-step method to achieve multifunctional biodegradable polybutylene adipate/terephthalate (PBAT)/thermoplastic starch (TPS) films. As a result, the obtained composite with 1 phr Mica (P4T6-1Mica) demonstrated excellent comprehensive performances under the coordination of esterification and acidolysis of CA. The crystallinity and tensile strength of P4T6-1Mica were 240 and 56% higher than those of original composite (P4T6C0.5), attributed to the heterogeneous nucleation of Mica and improved interfacial compatibility. P4T6-1Mica also exhibited a lower water vapor transmission rate (WVT) of 73.39 g/m2·24 h, representing a 39.3% improvement over P4T6C0.5. The decreased WVT was assigned to the hindering paths caused by CA esterification and acidolysis and the original barrier of Mica. At 10 weeks, the biodegradation rates for P4T6C0.5, P4T6-1Mica, and P4T6-2Mica were 56.3, 37.5, and 33.1%, respectively, indicating regulable biodegradation. The incorporation of exfoliated Mica even enhances UV resistance and transmittance of the film. The design of double esterification and a one-step process offers sustainable, affordable, and energy-saving approaches for developing multifunctional biodegradable materials to address plastic pollutions.

Fully biodegradable poly (lactic acid)/poly (butylene adipate-co-terephthalate) blends with highly toughness based on in situ interfacial compatibilization by functional Epoxy compound

Shen Yunda,Jin Bingrui,Ren Liang,Gan Hongnian,Li Jiankun,Zhao Dan,Shen Huizhong,Zhang Mingyao

Synergistically integrating poly(butylene adipate-co-terephthalate) (PBAT) with polylactic acid (PLA) presents an economical strategy to develop biodegradable materials by leveraging their complementary characteristics. However, the inherent phase incompatibility between PBAT and induces severe interfacial defects, fundamentally limiting the development of high-strength biodegradable composites. In this study, glycidyl methacrylate (GMA) is grafted onto PBAT through reactive blending during the melting process, whereupon PLA/PBAT-g-GMA blends are prepared by means of an in-situ compatibilization approach, in an attempt to achieve PLA/PBAT blends with satisfactory comprehensive properties. The effects of PBAT content and GMA grafting rate on the interfacial compatibility, microstructure, mechanical properties, thermal performance, crystalline behavior and rheological processability of PLA/PBAT blends are investigated in detail. Systematic research has shown that the compatibility of PLA/PBAT blends has been significantly improved by implementing reactive compatibilization methods, and when the PBAT-g-GMA (2.84, the number refers to the grafting rate of GMA) content is 40%, the impact strength of the blend can reach 961 J/m without affecting rigidity, which indicates that our work proposes an effective approach to fabricate high-toughness PLA/PBAT blends through simple, environmentally friendly, and low-cost processing methods. Furthermore, the PLA/PBAT blends exhibit enhanced crystallization behavior while showing a slight decrease in thermal performance. The rheological analysis shows that the storage modulus, loss modulus, and complex viscosity significantly increase with the increase of PBAT content and GMA grafting rate, which improves processing performance of blends. SEM shows that as the grafting rate of GMA increases, the particle size distribution of PBAT becomes smaller and more uniform.

CO2-philic chain extenders: Engineering interfacial activation for optimized cellular morphogenesis in biodegradable polymer foams

Bo Wen,Gaopeng Wang,Renze Xu,Chenglong Weng,Jintao Yang

With the growing global emphasis on environmental protection, supercritical CO 2 foaming technology for biodegradable materials such as polylactic acid (PLA), poly(butylene adipate-co-terephthalate) (PBAT), poly (butylene succinate) (PBS) and their blends has emerged as a research and application hotspot. However, the low melt strength and poor compatibility of these polymers often lead to low nucleation efficiency, cell wall rupture and coalescence, exhibiting inferior foaming performance. In this work, aiming to enhance the foamability of PLA and PLA/PBAT blends, a fluorinated chain extender, F-CE (GMA-co-DFHA-co-MMA), was designed and synthesized. Through the reactive melt blending, F-CE effectively enhanced the melt strength of PLA and interfacial adhesion between PLA and PBAT, leading to a significant improvement in foaming performance. Additionally, the fluorine groups in DFHA demonstrated high affinity for CO 2 , providing additional heterogeneous nucleation sites for bubble formation, thereby increasing both foam expansion ratio and cell density. Notably, the F-CE/PLA foam exhibited a cell diameter of ∼13.8 μm with an exceptionally high expansion ratio of ∼35. As a contrast, pristine PLA foam shows an expansion ratio of ∼30, but with large cell diameter (∼118 μm). Although PLA foam containing CE without fluorine (CE/PLA foam) exhibits small cells with an average cell diameter of ∼13.6 μm, the expansion ratio is low (∼23). In addition, F-CE also exhibits superior performance in improving the foamability of PLA/PBAT blends. This work presents a chain extender specifically engineered for foaming applications, which functions as a highly efficient foaming additive to holistically enhance the foaming performance of polymers.

Tunable Thermal-Induced Degradation in Fully Bio-Based Copolyesters with Enhanced Mechanical and Water Barrier Properties

Qingyang Luan,Han Hu,Xiaoyu Jiang,Chen Lin,Xiaoqin Zhang,Qianfeng Wang,Yunxiao Dong,Jinggang Wang,Jin Zhu

Bio-based fumaric acid act as a key monomer for the fabrication of high-performance and thermal-induced degradation polymers. Obtained poly(butylene 2,5-furandicarboxylate/fumarate) copolyesters had a high number-average molecular weight from 27,500 to 37,600 g/mol. Trans C═C bonds and the conjugated effect provide interesting properties. Influenced by the thermal history, the elastic modulus and tensile strength (>50 MPa) are much higher than PBAT. Trans C═C bonds of fumaric acid and intermolecular interactions of furan rings restrict the diffusion of gas and water molecules. Specifically, the water barrier is 4–12 times better than PBAT, filling the gap in biodegradable food packaging. The hydrolysis resistance of fumarate segments provides good durability during their life span. The functionalization of PBFFu by thiol-Michael addition was performed at room temperature. Three substituent groups bring different conditions of pendant amino groups, resulting in the thermal-induced intramolecular cyclization from 40 to 100 °C. Fumaric acid could be a critical point to achieve the coordination of high-performance and temperature-induced degradation.
