Bioinspired highly entangled hydrogel coating with integrated mechanical-chemical anchorage for enhanced tribological performance of PEEK

Rongnian Xu,Jiale Liu,Weiyi Zhao,BingBing Liu,Renjie Li,Xiaoduo Zhao,Qiangbing Wei,Shuanhong Ma

Polyether ether ketone (PEEK) is a high-performance biomaterial valued for its bone-comparable hardness and chemical stability, yet its inherent hydrophobicity and high coefficient of friction restrict its broader clinical application. Herein, inspired by the superior mechanics and surface lubrication of natural articular cartilage, a biomimetic gradient modulus-matched PEEK composite material (SPEH) was successfully fabricated. Specifically, an interconnected porous structure was first created on the PEEK surface through sulfonation treatment, and the hydrogel precursor solution was then infused into the pores and crosslinked under ultraviolet irradiation, forming a highly entangled hydrogel layer that was tightly anchored to the substrate via covalent chemical bonding. The resulting SPEH composite demonstrated strong interfacial adhesion, as evidenced by the 90° peel test. Meanwhile, it exhibited significantly enhanced surface hydrophilicity, a cartilage-mimetic elastic modulus, and superior tribological performance. The ultralow friction coefficient (COF < 0.080) and outstanding wear resistance of the composite could be attributed to the formation of a stable hydration film at the sliding interface, which effectively reduced direct solid–solid contact and frictional dissipation through hydration lubrication. This strategy offers a promising pathway to broaden the application scope of PEEK in high-performance orthopedic implants.

Crosslinked carbon nanotube/crystalline PEEK composites for high strength and electromagnetic interference shielding under harsh environments

Yu Bai,Shengdao Wang,Guibin Wang,Yanxu Lu,Liubo Liang,Xiaohan Mei,Shiyu Wang,Chunqi Guo,Jianpeng Jiao,Xinyuan Shi,Shuling Zhang

With the rapid development of lightweight technologies and information systems, commercial polymer-based electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding composites are increasingly inadequate for the complex structures and harsh operating conditions of aerospace electronic devices due to their corrosion sensitivity and low strength. Achieving high mechanical strength, EMI shielding effectiveness, and stable performance in harsh environments, such as high temperatures and corrosive media, remains a challenge. In this study, phenylacetylene groups were electrochemically grafted onto carbon nanotube (CNT) films to form phenylacetylene-grafted CNT (Ph-CNT), which was then combined with soluble phenylacetylene-capped ketimine polyetheretherketone (An-Ph-PEEK). Acidification of An-Ph-PEEK created crystalline phenylacetylene-capped PEEK (Ph-PEEK), and thermal crosslinking of phenylacetylene groups yielded crosslinked Ph-CNT/crystalline Ph-PEEK (cc@Ph-CNT/Ph-PEEK) composites. These composites exhibited high tensile strength (>240 MPa at 25 °C) and EMI shielding effectiveness (52–81 dB in the X-band across 25–250 °C), attributed to enhanced interfacial interactions and the stability of the crosslinked structure. The mechanical and EMI shielding properties were retained after prolonged exposure to corrosive media, thanks to the crystallinity of Ph-PEEK. Additionally, the composites exhibited photothermal antibacterial and electric de-icing capabilities. The high-performance cc@Ph-CNT/Ph-PEEK composites show promising potential for applications in harsh environments.

Synthesis of Fluorinated Hollow MoS2 Nanospheres for Low Dielectric Constant PEEK Composites With Enhanced Thermal Stability

Fangda Jing,Qingsong Li,Na Ma,Dongyan Liu,Guoming Lin,Guoxin Sui

The dielectric constant, thermal stability, and mechanical properties of dielectric materials play a crucial role in advancing electronic devices toward high performance and integration density. However, the comprehensive properties of existing PEEK-based low dielectric materials are insufficient to meet future demands. In this work, hollow molybdenum disulfide nanospheres (hMoS 2 ) were prepared by the template method and hydrothermal reaction, and then modified with 1H,1H,2H,2H-Perfluorodecanethiol (PFDT) to obtain fluorinated hollow molybdenum disulfide nanospheres (F-hMoS 2 ). Subsequently, the F-hMoS 2 was blended with poly (ether ether ketone) (PEEK) to form F-hMoS 2 /PEEK composites. Morphological, structural, and chemical composition characterization confirmed the successful synthesis of F-hMoS 2 . The results showed that the addition of F-hMoS 2 effectively reduced the dielectric constant of PEEK composites while enhancing their thermal stability and mechanical properties. The F-hMoS 2 /PEEK-0.6 composite exhibited a dielectric constant of 2.75 at 1 MHz, a thermal decomposition temperature of 541.7°C, and a tensile strength of 101.7 MPa. In addition, the composite exhibited better frequency stability, a higher glass transition temperature (154.5°C), and storage modulus (3200 MPa) compared with pure PEEK. This work establishes a materials design paradigm for the practical application of PEEK in electronic devices.

Enhancing the tribological performance of PEEK exposed to water-lubrication by filling goethite (α-FeOOH) nanoparticles

Chuanping Gao,Ga Zhang,Tingmei Wang,Qihua Wang

The formation of a tribo-film on the counterface plays an important role on the tribological performances of polymer subjected to mixed and boundary lubrication conditions. However, when freshwater is used as a lubricant, the formation of a tribo-film usually is hindered. In order to overcome this disadvantage, PEEK/α-FeOOH nanocomposites were developed and their tribological performances were studied under water lubrication conditions in the present work. It was demonstrated that the inclusion of α-FeOOH nanoparticles (NPs) into the PEEK matrix improves significantly the tribological performance of the matrix. The nanostructures and properties of the tribo-films formed on the steel counterface were comprehensively studied. It was identified that the addition of α-FeOOH NPs promotes the formation of a lubricating tribo-film which covers the entire counterface. Based on the investigations on tribo-films, we deem that the α-FeOOH NPs act as precursors for the dehydration reaction promoting the formation of a tribo-film which consists of α-Fe2O3 and transferred PEEK. It is assumed that the enhanced tribological performance is related to the possibly high load-bearing capability and “easy-to-shear” characteristic of the tribo-film.

Plasma surface grafting of PEEK for enhanced mechanical properties in PAKD/PEBA double-layer medical catheters

Song Xiaobo,Liu Xinyi,Mu Zongjing,Xu Zhongbin,Zhang Cailiang

The growing demand for advanced medical catheters in minimally invasive surgery underscores the importance of optimizing catheter mechanical properties. Although existing studies have explored various multilayer catheters made from different materials and composite designs, research on poly ether ether ketone (PEEK)-based double-layer catheters remains limited. This work developed a PAKD/PEBA double-layer medical catheter utilizing a combination of plasma surface modification and multi-step grafting. The approach enhanced the interlayer peel strength from 0 N to 6.78 N, meeting the bonding requirements for medical catheters. Moreover, compared to a single-layer PEEK catheter with the same dimensions, the bending stiffness of the PAKD/PEBA double-layer catheter was reduced by 39.65% and the torsional stiffness by 34.14%, resulting in improved flexibility and torsional resistance.

Effects of moisture and temperature on shear strength of resistance welded joints of CF/PEEK composites

Chengjie Hu,Siyuan Gui,RenXin Xu,WeiMin Wang,ZhengYi Fu,Wei Ji

In this study, aluminum nitride (AlN) modified carbon fiber heating elements (HE) were used to connect carbon fiber reinforced poly-ether-ether-ketone (CF/PEEK) composites by resistance welding. The effects of AlN content and environmental conditions on the lap shear strength (LSS) of resistance welding composites were investigated by preparing welded joints with different AlN content. The results show that the LSS of the welded joint increases rapidly with the increase of AlN content. When the content of AlN is 5 wt.%, the maximum strength reaches 30.63 MPa. The welded joints were then placed in room temperature (25°C, 50% relative humidity (RH)) and artificial aging chamber (85°C, 90%RH) for 28 days, respectively, and tested in the temperature range of −30°C to 145°C. It is found that with the increase of test temperature, the LSS under the two environmental conditions shows a decreasing trend. High temperature and moisture absorption will have a superimposed negative impact on the LSS of the welded joint. At 145°C, the strength of the sample under elevated temperature wet (ETW) environment is the lowest, which is 21.61 MPa. The SEM analysis of the fracture surface of the joint shows that the main failure mechanism of the joint is the cohesive failure of HE. The main reasons for the degradation of interface bonding properties are wet heat aging and high temperature environment.

Non-covalent modification of boron nitride nanoparticle-reinforced PEEK composite: Thermally conductive, interfacial, and mechanical properties

Xin Liu,Yanwei Gao,Yingshuang Shang,Xuanbo Zhu,Zilong Jiang,Chenyi Zhou,Jinxuan Han,Haibo Zhang

A non-covalent modified boron nitride(n-CMBN) was obtained by non-covalent modification successfully and used to prepare poly(ether ether ketone)(PEEK) composites. The non-covalent modifier is polyetherimide(PEI), which has high compatibility with PEEK. Particularly, only a small amount of PEI was used to modify BN, which made the thermal conductivity of 30 wt% n-CMBN/PEEK reached 1.01 W·(m·K) −1 , 16% higher than that of BN/PEEK. Modified Hashin-Shtrikman model demonstrated that n-CMBN/PEEK possessed 7% lower total thermal resistance compared with BN/PEEK. Moreover, the tensile strength and elongation at break remains above 99.0 MPa and 14.6% respectively, demonstrating the relatively good mechanical properties in high thermally conductive composites. The introduction of 10 wt% n-CMBN decrease the friction coefficient of PEEK composites, which was as low as 0.33 of 30% lower than that of PEEK. In addition, the 5% weight loss temperature were above 557 °C, exhibiting the excellent heat resistant.

Influence of surface-modified glass fibers on interfacial properties of GF/PEEK composites using molecular dynamics

Lei Pan,Huaxin Guo,Lang Zhong,Menglin Wang,Pengbo Xue,Xiaosa Yuan

In this paper, molecular dynamics (MD) simulations are carried out to explore the influence of surface modification of glass fiber on interfacial binding energy and failure behavior of GF/PEEK composites. The silane coupling agent and sulfonated PEEK (SPEEK) are employed to modify the surface of glass fibers (GF), and the results reveal that the SPEEK can be employed as an adhesive sizing agent to improve the interfacial bonding strength of GF/PEEK composites. In addition, the synergistic mechanism of non-bonding and mechanical interlocking is investigated by using MD simulations. The interface shear simulation results demonstrate that the interfacial shear strength of composite increased and more resin molecules are found on the surface after SPEEK is incorporated into the GF surface. Moreover, compared with surface-untreated short GF-reinforced PEEK composite, the experimental results demonstrate that the tensile and bending strength of SGF/PEEK composite are improved after interface modification with SPEEK by 21.4% and 30.2%, respectively. The current study presents the utilization of MD simulation for interface design to enhance the mechanical properties of fiber-reinforced PEEK composites.

The poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) hydrogel is regarded as a potential articular cartilage replacement for its good biocompatibility , high permeability to fluid and load-bearing properties. This work investigated a novel Poly(vinyl alcohol)-polyetheretherketone/Poly(vinyl alcohol)-β-tricalcium phosphate (PVA-PEEK/PVA-β-TCP) bilayered hydrogels by freezing-thawing with biomimetic properties for articular cartilage and subchondral bone is developed. The bilayered hydrogels microarchitecture consists of a highly porous and dense structure, and the internal structure were analyzed by micro-CT. The morphology of the resulting hydrogels was analyzed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), the enhancement of the mechanical properties of the PVA-PEEK/PVA-β-TCP bilayered hydrogels were demonstrated by mechanical testing. The bilayered structure indicate that a good bonding exist between the two layers, which is known to be a requisite necessary to assure a good integrity and functionality of the osteochondral construct. In addition, in vitro cell culture studies revealed that the hydrogels has no negative effect on the cell viability and proliferation and possess good biocompatibility. Then, the bilayered hydrogels were implanted into the knee joint defect of rabbits and hematoxylin and eosin and immunohistochemical staining. The PVA-PEEK/PVA-β-TCP bilayered hydrogels show good potential for use in the field of articular cartilage repair.

Fabrication of High Thermally Conductive and Electrical Insulating Composites by Boron Nitride-Nanosheet-Coated PEEK Fiber

Youli Sun,Hongbo Dang,HaoYuan Tan,Jiashuang Luan,Dong Jiang,Yanhua Yang

The development of polyether ether ketone (PEEK)-based thermally conductive insulating composites is required in miniaturized electronic devices with a high power density where heat needs to be evacuated. However, the low thermal conductivity (TC) remains a great challenge, significantly restricting the large-scale applications of PEEK. Here, a novel class of boron nitride nanosheets (BNNSs)/PEEK composites with excellent heat dissipation properties through BNNS-coated PEEK fiber is developed, through simple hot-press sintering. A direct comparison of experimental measurements between the BNNSs/PEEK fiber composites and the BNNSs/PEEK powder composites indicates that the TC is greatly improved in the presence of the well-orientated structure of BNNSs. In addition, the composite with high loading of BNNSs exhibits a combination of high tensile strength and significant electrical insulation (volume electrical resistivity beyond 10 9 Ω cm). The experimental data demonstrate that it has broad and bright prospects for application in a range of emerging electronic devices, which also provide great potential for enhancing the thermal management application of PEEK-based composites.

Regulated Magnesium Ion Release From Polydopamine-Mg Modified Polyetheretherketone Surface for Improved Anti-Infection and Osseointegration Properties

Shengdong Liu,Da Li,Tianhua Xiao,Zhufeng Yuan,Huanhuan Zhang,Yonggang Min

Polyetheretherketone (PEEK) emerges as a highly promising biopolymer due to its mechanical properties and elastic modulus akin to those of human cortical bone. Despite these advantages, the clinical utilization of PEEK is often hindered by its limited bioactivity and suboptimal capability for bone integration. Herein, we introduce a facile and expeditious method for enhancing the osseointegration efficacy of PEEK substrates by depositing polydopamine (PDA) chelated with magnesium ions at varying concentrations (0.02, 0.1, and 0.5 M) as a surface coating (PDA-Mg). This PDA-Mg-modified PEEK surface exhibits distinctive properties, including antibacterial properties (antibacterial rate of 93.267%), improved vascular regeneration, and osteogenic promotion (ALP activity increased by 239.5%). Moreover, the Mg 2+ ions are released in a regulated way, and the impact of Mg 2+ concentration on the aforementioned properties has been thoroughly examined. Our study demonstrates that PDA-Mg-modified PEEK offers a highly promising prospect for clinical applications. Specifically, these implants stand out as exceptional candidates for bone graft materials, with the potential to significantly improve patient outcomes and accelerate recovery processes.

Synergistic EMI shielding and impact resistance in nano-engineered aramid/carbon-PEEK composites via gradient architecture design

Nan Zhou,Long Xia,Jingwei Li,Hongyan Zhang,Naiyu Jiang,Wenbo Liu,Dongxing Zhang

To address the inherent trade-off between electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding and impact resistance, this study proposes a hierarchical dual-scale decoupling strategy. (1) Macro-scale spatial decoupling: Asymmetric distribution of aramid fibers (AFs) for the impact-resistant layer and carbon fibers for the EMI shielding layer in polyetheretherketone (PEEK) matrix, (2) Micro-scale EMI decoupling: Dual-layer CF architecture comprising MXene/PEI-CB interfacial engineered absorption layer (top) and MXene modified high-conductivity reflection substrate (bottom). Specifically, the strategy synergizes with AF surface modification via PI/CNT-COOH/ANF sizing and the construction of the MXene/PEI-CB and MXene conductive network on the CF surface. This design effectively separates the low-conductivity impact-resistant layer (AF) from the high-conductivity shielding layer (CF) in space, thereby eliminating the concentration conflict associated with interface modification. As a result, compared to the CM/PEEK composite, the asymmetric gradient design (ACM/PEEK) leads to a 26.9 % increase in the absorption coefficient (A), with the overall shielding effectiveness reaching 38.04 dB. Simultaneously, the nano-engineered interface, in conjunction with the intrinsic toughness of AF, effectively dissipates impact stress. Under an 8 J impact load, the peak load increases by 102.25 %, and the damage area is significantly reduced. This study successfully overcomes the traditional trade-off between mechanical robustness and EMI shielding performance. It offers a novel paradigm for the development of lightweight, structure-function integrated electromagnetic protection materials suitable for extreme service environment.
