Due to the spread of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), large amounts of antivirals were consumed and released into wastewater, posing risks to the ecosystem and human health. Ozonation is commonly utilized as pre-oxidation process to enhance the disinfection of hospital wastewater during COVID-19 spread. In this study, the transformation of ribavirin, antiviral for COVID-19, during ozone/PMS‑chlorine intensified disinfection process was investigated. •OH followed by O 3 accounted for the dominant ribavirin degradation in most conditions due to higher reaction rate constant between ribavirin and •OH vs. SO 4 • − (1.9 × 10 9 vs. 7.9 × 10 7 M −1 s −1 , respectively). During the O 3 /PMS process, ribavirin was dehydrogenated at the hydroxyl groups first, then lost the amide or the methanol group. Chloride at low concentrations (e.g., 0.5– 2 mg/L) slightly accelerated ribavirin degradation, while bromide, iodide, bicarbonate, and dissolved organic matter all reduced the degradation efficiency. In the presence of bromide, O 3 /PMS process resulted in the formation of organic brominated oxidation by-products (OBPs), the concentration of which increased with increasing bromide dosage. However, the formation of halogenated OBPs was negligible when chloride or iodide existed. Compared to the O 3 /H 2 O 2 process, the concentration of brominated OBPs was significantly higher after ozonation or the O 3 /PMS process. This study suggests that the potential risks of the organic brominated OBPs should be taken into consideration when ozonation and ozone-based processes are used to enhance disinfection in the presence of bromide amid COVID-19 pandemic.

Because of the high hydrophobicity , low volatility, and high sorption capacity of PAHs, their remediation in contaminated soil is challenging. Electrokinetic (EK) enhanced chemical remediation is an emerging dual technology employed in this study, using a new oxidant peroxymonosulfate (PMS) to remediate PAHs contaminated soil. Here, PMS migration under electric field and the remediation efficiency for the PAHs polluted soil were assessed. We observed that the PMS removal efficiencies (59.7%–82.8%) were higher than those with persulfate (PS) (53.9%–78.5%), indicating PMS's superior oxidation capacity for PAHs. Although oxidant PMS can decontaminate PAHs in polluted soils, its removal of PAHs was only 11.0% without the enhanced methods. The enhancements increased the removal efficiency for PAHs from 0.33 to 2.10 times. At fixed catholyte pH of 4, the highest removal efficiency (34.1%) was achieved because it enhanced PMS migration from cathode to anode. These findings suggested that PMS was a potential oxidant for EK remediation, and some enhancements must be applied in EK combined PMS remediation PAHs polluted soil.

Coking wastewater concentrate (CWC) generated during the membrane filtration process is difficult to treat mainly due to its higher chloridion concentration. Advanced oxidation process is ineffective in treating CWC because of the quenching effect of chloridion on hydroxyl radicals. In this study, peroxymonosulfate (PMS)/chloridion process was developed to treat CWC, and 2,4-dimethyphenol (DMP) was selected as targeted pollutant to investigate the reaction mechanism of PMS/chloridion process. Unlike the traditional view that hypochloride acids are the main active species during the PMS/chloridion process, it was found that singlet oxygen, hypochloric acids and chlorine radicals contributed to the degradation of DMP, which was evidenced by the quenching experiments, electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy and identified degradation products. Based on the degradation products, the possible degradation pathway of DMP was tentatively proposed. The PMS/chloridion process can be applied in a wide pH range from 3 to 8. The optimal ratio of PMS to chloridion was 1:1 for mineralizing DMP in which the maximum mineralization of DMP reached 33.3%. The PMS/chloridion process can effectively remove COD and colourity of actual CWC. However, the ratio of PMS to chloridion varied with the initial COD concentration of CWC. This study provides a novel treatment process for CWC, and an insight into the removal mechanism of the PMS/chloridion process.

Composite MgIn 2 S 4 /Bi 2 O 3 was prepared and applied to the photocatalytic degradation of tetracycline (TC) under visible light. Results showed that formation of type-II heterojunction extended the visible light response range of the composite to 628 nm, effectively limiting the rapid recombination of photogenerated carriers. Further, the degradation experiment showed that TC was effectively decomposed by the composite. The main active substances for degrading TC were SO 4 · − , ·OH, h + and 1 O 2 . Cycling experiments showed that the TC removal rate by MgIn 2 S 4 /Bi 2 O 3 photocatalytic material was still as high as 75% after 4 cycles without any obvious changes in the crystalline phase structure.

The rapid accumulation of spent lithium-ion batteries (SLIBs) poses a global challenge in terms of their disposal and management. Considering the substantial quantity of transition metals contained in SLIBs, the preparation of derived catalysts for environmental remediation has emerged as a promising approach for the recycling of SLIBs. Herein, the citric acid-based sol-gel method was employed to synthesize the catalyst from SLIBs. The derived spent cathode material (LiNi x Co y Mn 1−x-y O 2 , NCM) composites exhibit superior catalytic activity and display higher adaptability to the environment, effectively removing typical azo dye, methylene blue (MB), as well as various organic contaminants , sulfamethoxazole (SMX), levofloxacin (LVF) and rhodamine B (RhB) in 30 min. The Co 2+ and Mn 2+ ions in the catalyst play a crucial role in activating PMS to generate 1 O 2 and O 2 •− . The degradation of MB proceeds through several reaction pathways, including demethylation, oxidation , and ring-opening reactions, as confirmed by the Fukui function and UPLC-QTOF-MS analyses. The assessment of toxicity in the degradation products was conducted using T.E.S.T. and ECOSAR 2.0. This proposed method can be highly suggested as a promising strategy for the recycling and utilization of SLIBs, transforming them into efficient catalysts for PMS systems in environmental remediation.

This study uncovers a synergistic Fe-Mo dual-atom catalytic mechanism that enhances peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation and pollutant degradation through dynamic electron management and substrate pre-activation. A nitrogen-doped carbon-supported FeMo dual-atom catalyst (FeMo/NC) was synthesized and systematically analyzed using XAFS, in situ Raman, DFT calculations, and electrochemical tests. The FeMo/NC-PMS system achieved 99 % ciprofloxacin (CIP) degradation within 10 minutes (rate constant: 0.402 min −1 ), maintained > 90 % efficiency across pH 1–13, and exhibited minimal Fe/Mo leaching (<0.1 ppm) with 90 % retention after five cycles. Mechanistic studies revealed that Mo stabilizes Fe valence states via electron transfer, strengthens Fe-N coordination, and promotes pollutant pre-activation on Mo sites while enabling selective 1 O 2 generation at Fe sites. This work establishes a dual-atom design strategy to optimize electron redistribution and interfacial interactions in Fenton-like systems. The demonstrated compatibility with membrane filtration (100 % CIP removal in wastewater) highlights its potential for practical water remediation applications.

Because of its high toxicity and severe degradation, phenol has caused serious environmental pollution, and it is urgent to explore a stable and efficient degradation method of phenol. In this study, Ni/Fe bimetallic atomic cluster composite catalyst activated peroxymonosulfate (PMS) to degrade phenol efficiently. The experimental results show that the phenol degradation rate can reach 100% in a wide range of pH (3–11), and the system offers good stability in repeated experiments. The free radical quenching investigation and electrochemical characterization showed that the non-free radical pathway dominated the degradation system, and a large amount of singlet oxygen and rapid electron transfer promoted the efficient degradation of phenol in wastewater. This study opens up a new way for bimetallic atom cluster catalysts to activate PMS to degrade organic pollutants. Graphical

Biological treatment is not completely effective for the removal of all refractory organics, including fulvic-like and humic-like substances, in fresh leachate from municipal solid waste (MSW) incineration. In this study, a UV/peroxymonosulfate (PMS) process was used to degrade the refractory pollutants that remained in the bio-treatment effluent. The reaction conditions were optimal when 10 g/L of PMS was used at a pH of 8.96. 70.6% of COD was degraded within 60 min with optimal reaction conditions. The refractory organics were degraded by the UV/PMS process, which generated intermediates with low molecular weight. The mechanisms involved in this advanced degradation process were uncovered by detecting the generation and conversion of radicals during the oxidation reaction.

The overuse of antibiotics currently results in the presence of various antibiotics being detected in water bodies, which poses potential risks to human health and the environment. Therefore, it is highly significant to remove antibiotics from water. In this study, we developed novel rod-like NiCo-phyllosilicate hybrid catalysts on calcined natural zeolite (NiCo@C-zeolite) via a facile one-pot process. The presence of the zeolite served as both a silicon source and a support, maintaining a high specific surface area of the NiCo@C-zeolite. Remarkably, NiCo@C-zeolite exhibited outstanding catalytic performance in antibiotic degradation under PMS activation. Within just 5 min, the degradation rate of metronidazole (MNZ) reached 96.14%, ultimately achieving a final degradation rate of 99.28%. Furthermore, we investigated the influence of catalyst dosage, PMS dosage, MNZ concentration, initial pH value, and various inorganic anions on the degradation efficiency of MNZ. The results demonstrated that NiCo@C-zeolite displayed outstanding efficacy in degrading MNZ under diverse conditions and maintained a degradation rate of 94.86% at 60 min after three consecutive cycles of degradation. Free radical quenching experiments revealed that SO•−4 played a significant role in the presence of NiCo@C-zeolite-PMS system. These findings indicate that the novel rod-like NiCo-phyllosilicate hybrid catalysts had excellent performance in antibiotic degradation.

In this study, carbamazepine (CBZ) degradation was evaluated by peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation after the simultaneous introduction of FeS 2 and WS 2 . For FeS 2 /WS 2 /PMS system, 99% of CBZ was removed within 40 min under the conditions of 100 mg/L FeS 2 , 150 mg/L WS 2 , 0.2 mM PMS, and initial pH 6.7. The apparent rate constant ( k obs ) of CBZ degradation in the FeS 2 /WS 2 /PMS system (0.108 min −1 ) was about 3.0- and 13.5-folds of that in FeS 2 /PMS system (0.036 min −1 ) and WS 2 /PMS system (0.008 min −1 ). Quenching experiments and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) experiments indicated that hydroxyl radical, sulfate radical , superoxide radical, and singlet oxygen participated in the CBZ degradation. The catalytic reaction mechanism was proposed, and W on the surface of WS 2 was the main reactive site to accelerate the regeneration of Fe(II) in the FeS 2 , which played a dominant role in PMS activation. The degradation pathways of CBZ in the FeS 2 /WS 2 /PMS system were put forward, and the ecotoxicity of CBZ and its degradation by-products was evaluated. A distinguishing performance of CBZ degradation in the successive six runs was shown. The work indicated the FeS 2 /WS 2 /PMS system was an efficient advanced oxidation process with promising engineering application due to its simple operation, high efficiency, and stability for the degradation of the organics from water.

In this study, the bimetallic and nitrogen co-doped biochar was prepared for peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation to degrade emerging contaminants. Compared to single metal-doped biochar, bimetallic-doped biochar showed much higher catalytic activity. Iron and cobalt co-doped biochar (FeCo-BC) exhibited higher catalytic activity than iron and copper co-doped biochar (FeCu-BC). When FeCo-BC was used for PMS activation, sulfamethoxazole (SMX) could be completely removed within 10 min, with the degradation rate of 0.749 min −1 , which was 2.3 and 69.4 times higher than that of Fe-BC (0.333 min −1 ) and Co-BC (0.0108 min −1 ), respectively, demonstraing the synergistic effect of bimetallic co-doping. Meanwhile, the SMX mineralization efficiency reached 57.1 %. In the system of FeCo-BC/PMS, multi reactive species produced, in which hydroxyl radicals, sulfate radicals and high-valent metal-oxo mainly contributed to SMX degradation. The superior catalytic activity of FeCo-BC was attributed to the configuration of FeNx-CoNx. In five consecutive experiments, FeCo-BC showed good catalytic activity and stability. This study provides a way to the rational design of high efficient and stable PMS catalyst, which could be used in Fenton-like reaction to remove the emerging organic contaminants.

Tetracycline (TC) persistence in aquatic systems poses significant ecological and human health risks, due to its toxicity and resistance to conventional biodegradation. In this study, sulfur and nitrogen modification strategies were employed to enhance the catalytic performance of spinel ferrite MnFe 2 O 4 for TC degradation via H 2 O 2 and peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation. The catalysts were characterized using SEM, XRD, VSM, CV, and ICP-OES to elucidate the effects of heteroatom modification on morphology, crystal structure, magnetic separability, and metal leaching behavior. S modification markedly enhanced both H 2 O 2 and PMS activation capabilities. The optimized S/MnFe 2 O 4 -5/H 2 O 2 system removed 82 % TC (50 mg/L) within 20 min, an eightfold increase in the reaction rate compared to the unmodified MnFe 2 O 4 /H 2 O 2 . This system maintained high efficiency across a broad pH range (3–11). In contrast, nitrogen modification selectively improved PMS activation, with the optimal N/MnFe 2 O 4 -3/PMS system degrading 74 % TC in 30 min, twice the degradation rate of MnFe 2 O 4 /PMS, and exhibiting minimal metal leaching with excellent recyclability. Scavenger studies confirmed that ·OH constitutes the dominant reactive oxygen species (ROS) in S/MnFe 2 O 4 -5/H 2 O 2 systems, while both ·OH and ·SO 4 - contribute significantly in N/MnFe 2 O 4 -3/PMS systems. Sulfur species act as electron mediators, facilitating the Fe/Mn redox cycle and enhancing ROS generation, whereas zero valence iron (Fe 0 ) formed during nitrogen modification serves as an efficient electron donor to activate PMS. Degradation pathway analysis and toxicity predictions confirmed a substantial reduction of TC environmental hazards. This work provides fundamental insights into the structure–activity relationships of heteroatom-modified MnFe 2 O 4 catalysts, and establishes practical design principles for robust advanced oxidation process catalysts in antibiotic remediation.
