Strain engineering has emerged as an effective strategy to modulate the electronic structure and adsorption energetics of oxygen evolution reaction (OER) catalysts. Among various approaches, phase-transition-induced strain offers distinct advantages due to its intrinsic origin, controllable magnitude, and structural stability, providing a self-adaptive route for dynamic catalytic regulation. Here, a lattice-matching strategy is employed to construct a tetragonal-phase ZrO 2 and tetragonal-phase RuO 2 (Tet-ZrO 2 /RuO 2 ) heterojunction catalyst. During synthesis, the phase transition of intermediate ZrO 2 (Int-ZrO 2 ) induces partial compressive strain on RuO 2 , leading to shortened Ru-O and Ru-Ru bond distances. The resulting Tet-ZrO 2 /RuO 2 catalyst exhibits outstanding activity in 0.5 M H 2 SO 4 , requiring only 193 mV overpotential to achieve 10 mA cm −2 and demonstrates remarkable stability, maintaining performance for 1000 h at 10 mA cm −2 with negligible degradation. Combining in situ attenuated total reflectance surface-enhanced infrared absorption spectroscopy (ATR-SEIRAS) with density functional theory calculation, it is revealed that the Tet-ZrO 2 /RuO 2 heterojunction enables the coexistence of both the adsorbate evolution mechanism (AEM) and the oxide path mechanism (OPM), jointly promoting O 2 generation. This work elucidates the regulatory role of lattice strain in tuning OER mechanisms through novel support design, providing a novel paradigm for developing highly active and stable electrocatalysts.

Direct methanol fuel cells have attracted extensive research interest, yet their practical advancement remains constrained by the inadequate activity and durability of conventional platinum-based anode catalysts. In response to these limitations, here we develop a non-platinum catalyst consisting of ultrafine rhodium nanocrystals confined within a ruthenium dioxide-modified hollow carbon sphere (Rh/RuO2−HCS) through a stepwise stereoconstruction approach. The hollow carbon sphere framework with plentiful mesoporous channels facilitates the transport of both electrons and ions, while RuO2 acts as a co-catalyst that supplies abundant hydroxyl species to oxidize CO intermediates, both of which are conducive to fully realizing the catalytic functions of Rh component. Benefiting from this synergistic design, the optimized Rh/RuO2−HCS catalyst exhibits outstanding methanol electrooxidation performance with large electrochemical surface area, high mass activity, and reliable durability, significantly superior to unmodified HCS and conventional carbon black-supported Rh catalysts.

Molten CaCl2 has been considered as significant electrolyte for novel electrochemical metallurgy processes due to high solubility of oxygen anions. Some novel processes based on molten-salt electrolysis of oxides in molten chlorides have been proposed, typically including FFC process and OS process. An inert anode capable of sustained oxygen evolution is crucial for a green and efficient electrochemical de-oxidation process. Herein we report the results of a promising inert anode candidate, who shows an excellent performance. Several techniques including anodic polarization, cyclic voltammetry, Tafel polarization and electrochemical impedance have been performed to evaluate the anode behavior of the TiO2·RuO2 anode, revealing that the anode is quite stable during anodic polarization and has a more positive corrosion electrode potential. An in situ analysis of anode gases using the mass spectra proved the capability of the sustained evolution of oxygen at the TiO2·RuO2 anode during electrolysis, meaning that this oxides anode could be a potential candidate as inert anode in calcium chloride–calcium oxide melts for green metallurgical processes, as it showed a nearly negligible solubility of ruthenium dioxide when immersed in the melt and a low rate of corrosion even after long time electrolysis.

RuO 2 has been extensively investigated as a pseudocapacitive material. However, developing a facile and effective method to improve the pseudocapacitive performance of RuO 2 is still desired. In this work, we report the synthesis of ultra-small RuO 2 nanoparticles supported on carbon cloth (us-RuO 2 /CC) via a facile two-step method. As a binder-free electrode, us-RuO 2 /CC exhibits a high capacitance of 1067.4 F g −1 at a current density of 1 A g −1 . Moreover, us-RuO 2 /CC also shows good rate performance (87.8% capacitance retention at 20 A g −1 ) and cycle stability (99.6% capacitance retention after 5000 cycles). Graphical abstract Ultra-small RuO 2 nanoparticles on carbon cloth (us-RuO 2 /CC) were synthesized via annealing and acid etching treatment of a ZnRu precursor, which was prepared by a dip-coating process. Introducing Zn significantly reduces the particle size of RuO 2 , leading to a high specific capacitance of 1067.4 F g −1 .

Revealing the nature of enhanced catalytic activity by oxygen vacancy and hetero-interface is an important and challenging task. Herein, the high-performance RuO 2 @Co 3 O 4 electrocatalyst with adjustable heterointerface-vacancy enhancement effect was prepared for the first time. The as-prepared RuO 2 @Co 3 O 4 (1:6) only respectively requires overpotentials of 152, 218 mV for OER and 90, 33 mV for HER in alkaline and acidic solutions to achieve a current density of 10 mA cm −2 . Moreover, the assembled electrolytic cell just need a voltages of 1.46, 1.65 V and 1.52, 1.72 V to achieve 10 and 350 mA cm −2 under the same conditions. The different ratios of Ru and Co can regulate the number of hetero-interfaces between RuO 2 and Co 3 O 4 and the concentration of interfacial oxygen vacancies. The systematically experimental and theoretical results unveil that the hetero-interface with strong electron coupling between RuO 2 and Co 3 O 4 accelerates the reaction kinetic and improves the stability of the catalyst. The interfacial oxygen vacancy not only directly participates in the reaction of dissociating H 2 O, but also adjusts the position of the d-band center of the catalyst and the adsorption strength of key intermediates, thus enhancing the activity of the catalysts.

Proton exchange membrane (PEM) water electrolysis for hydrogen production has a high current density and overall efficiency, and is a very promising hydrogen production strategy. However, its application is limited by the high anodic overpotential for oxygen evolution and the instability of catalysts. Therefore, anodic catalysts with a high activity and durability under acidic conditions need further research. Herein, we first synthesized the key intermediate Ru@Ir core-shell structures by controlling nanocrystals, then loaded them onto a carbon support and calcined to obtain a RuO2@IrO2/C core-shell nanocatalyst with a size smaller than 5 nm, whose activity exceeded that of commercial RuO2and commercial IrO2. After a 200 h stability test, the catalyst did not show significant performance degradation or structural degeneration. Finally, the prepared catalyst was assembled into a PEM electrolyzer showing the same results as the three-electrode tests, demonstrating its potential for practical applications and providing new insights for designing nanocatalysts suitable for industrialized PEM water electrolysis to produce hydrogenKeywords:PEM;OER;core-shell;structure;IrO2@RuO2/C

Electrolysis of seawater for hydrogen (H2) production to harvest clean energy is an appealing approach. In this context, there is an urgent need for catalysts with high activity and durability. RuO2 electrocatalysts have shown efficient activity in the hydrogen and oxygen evolution reactions (HER and OER), but they still suffer from poor stability. Herein, surface S-doped nanostructured RuO2 (S-RuO2) is rationally fabricated for efficient overall seawater splitting. Doping with S enhances the activity (overpotentials of 25 mV for the HER and 243 mV for the OER), long-term durability (1000 h at 100 mA cm–2), and achieves nearly 100% Faraday efficiency (FE). Moreover, the S-RuO2-based anion exchange membrane seawater electrolyzer requires 2.01 V to reach 1.0 A cm–2 under demanding industrial conditions. Experimental analysis and theoretical calculations indicate that surface S introduction could lower the valence state of Ru, thereby conferring enhanced activity and stability. Furthermore, the nanostructured S-RuO2 electrocatalyst is highly protected by the S-doped surface, which repels Cl– in alkaline seawater. This investigation presents a feasible strategy for designing RuO2-based seawater splitting catalysts with both high performance and good resistance to anodic corrosion.

The traditional oxygen evolution reaction (OER) usually uses RuO 2 catalyst as the benchmark, but has always faced the problem of not being able to simultaneously achieve low overpotential and long-term stability under high current density. Here, we use the in-situ electrochemical coating method to coat graphene oxide (GO) on RuO 2 catalyst. The results indicate that changing the in-situ coating amount of GO on RuO 2 catalyst activates the redox ability of lattice oxygen. Realize the transition from the adsorbate precipitation mechanism (AEM) reaction mechanism to the lattice oxygen mediated mechanism (LOM) reaction mechanism, and accelerate the deprotonation step. The optimized RuO 2 -1%GO catalyst has a low overpotential (180 mV at 10 mA cm −2 ) and excellent catalytic stability (300 h at 100 mA cm −2 ).

Exploring oxygen evolution reaction (OER) electrocatalysts over a universal pH range to simultaneously achieve enhanced activity, improved stability and reduced cost is a rewarding yet challenging endeavor. Considering the hydrophilicity and electronegativity disparity between Pb and Ru, herein, a Pb doped RuO 2 catalyst and its application as electrocatalyst for OER under universal pH conditions are studied. Due to the modified hydrophilicity and electronic structure, the Pb 0.1 Ru 0.9 O 2 only requires an overpotential of 207 mV to obtain a current density of 10 mA cm −2 in acidic environment, and overpotentials of 232 mV and 363 mV are required in alkaline and neutral environments, respectively. Moreover, extensive stability assessments conducted over a 24-h period reveal remarkable stability of the catalyst in diverse environments, encompassing acidic, alkaline, and neutral conditions. Additionally, the utilization of density functional theory (DFT) computations offers persuasive evidence that the inclusion of Pb within RuO 2 can significantly alter its electronic configuration, thereby promoting efficient electron transfer processes. This modulation of the electronic structure is crucial for enhancing the catalytic performance of the material. This research paves the way for innovative designs of highly efficient oxygen evolution reaction (OER) catalysts, featuring minimized use of precious metals, heightened catalytic prowess, and unparalleled stability across a broad pH range.

Osteoarthritis (OA) is the most prevalent degenerative joint disorder, characterized by chronic inflammation, cartilage degeneration, and the formation of osteophytes, which leads to serious economic and social challenges. Previous studies have demonstrated that oxidative stress-driven inflammation plays a crucial role in the pathophysiological progression of OA. In this study, we presented defective RuO2 (d-RuO2) as an effective antioxidant for the treatment of OA. Unlike the crystalline RuO2, the amorphous hydrous RuO2 nanospheres (composed of self-assembled ultrasmall RuO2) displayed superior nanozymatic antioxidant activities. In vitro studies demonstrated that d-RuO2 significantly reduced intracellular levels of reactive oxygen species (ROS), and decreased the expression of key inflammatory markers including inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS), cyclooxygenase-2 (COX2), tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), and interleukin-1β (IL-1β), indicating its anti-inflammatory effects. In vivo experiments showed that d-RuO2 effectively relieved pain, improved physical activity, and mitigated synovitis, cartilage degeneration, and bone remodeling induced by destabilization of the medial meniscus (DMM). Furthermore, the mechanistic investigations indicated that d-RuO2 attenuated the progression of OA by suppressing the ROS/NLRP3/Caspase-1 signaling pathway. In conclusion, we presented d-RuO2 as an efficient ROS scavenger, providing a potential therapeutic strategy for OA.

A novel Pt-RuO 2 /TiO 2 nanorod (Pt-RuO 2 /TNR) composite catalysts are prepared via the polyol method, in which the RuO 2 -TNR supports are synthesized by coprecipitation technology. Morphology characterization results demonstrate that RuO 2 nanoparticles (NPs) load on TNR carrier, and then Pt NPs uniformly disperse on the surface of RuO 2 -TNR with an average particle size of about 3.5 nm. The peak shifts of XPS patterns for Pt and Ti elements indicate the strong metal-support interaction (SMSI) between Pt NPs and RuO 2 -TNR. Compared with Pt/C catalyst, Pt-RuO 2 /TNR exhibits enhanced oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) activity and stability by the use of electrochemical testing techniques. ΔE 1/2 (about 30 mV) towards more positive potential represents the superior ORR performance of Pt-RuO 2 /TNR relative to Pt/C. Furthermore, the electrochemically active surface area (ECSA) of Pt-RuO 2 /TNR decreases only by 28 %, while the one of Pt/C is 53.8 % before and after accelerated degradation tests (ADT) for 20,000 cycles; and the loss on mass activity (MA) of the former (23 %) is much less than the one of the latter (52 %). Moreover, ECSA of Pt-RuO 2 /TNR decays only 5.8 %, whereas a considerable decline of ECSA for Pt/C is 41.5 % before and after corrosion testing for 50 h. Pt-RuO 2 /TNR could be used as an effective carbon-free electrocatalyst to improve the performance and stability of proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs).

The acidic electrolyte and highly oxidizing environment of proton exchange membrane water electrolysis (PEMWE) pose significant challenges to the stability of Ru-based anode catalysts and limit their practical applications. In this study, Co-doped RuO 2 nanocrystals are synthesized using a one-step annealing method of Co-exchanged Ru-bpydc derivatives. The catalyst demonstrated excellent oxygen evolution reaction (OER) performance, achieving a low overpotential of 205 mV at 10 mA cm −2 and superior stability, retaining activity for over 1000 h without degradation. Advanced characterization techniques revealed that cobalt doping increases oxygen vacancies and manipulates the reaction pathway by boosting the adsorbate evolution mechanism (AEM) and suppressing the participation of lattice oxygen in OER. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations further confirmed that the electron transfer between Ru and Co site via bridge O in the structure of Ru─O─Co optimized the adsorption energy of oxo-intermediates to promote AEM, thereby boosting stability. In addition, the Co─RuO x catalyst exhibited good performance as an anode in a PEMWE, demonstrating stable operation for over 100 h at a current density of 100 mA cm −2 . This work presents a viable approach to designing highly active and durable OER catalysts, making significant contributions to the advancement of PEMWE technology.
