Molecularly-imprinted hydrogel beads via self-sacrificing micro-reactors as safe and selective bilirubin adsorbents

Shiqi Yin,Yinghui Xu,Zhoujun Wang,Zhiwei Wei,Tao Xu,Weifeng Zhao,Changsheng Zhao

For patients who are suffering from liver dysfunction or metabolic obstruction, excessive bilirubin (BIL) in their bodies may cause jaundice with irreversible cerebral injury. Traditional exchange transfusion and photodynamic therapy pose a risk of serious adverse reactions or limited curative effects. Therefore, as a generally used treatment, hemoperfusion (HP) purifies patients’ blood with solid adsorbents. However, the development of clinical BIL absorbents is greatly impeded by low selectivity and unsatisfactory blood compatibility. Herein, inspired by oviparity, we propose BIL-imprinted poly(acrylic acid-co-sodium p-styrenesulfonate)–reduced graphene oxide (PAA–SS–rGO@BIL) hydrogel beads as BIL adsorbents via self-sacrificing micro-reactors. In the micro-reactors, cross-linked polymerization is achieved and a solidified gel is formed. The received hydrogel beads show outstanding selective adsorption capabilities toward BIL due to the recognition sites, and π–π and hydrophobic interactions. Such hydrogel beads possess superior blood compatibility owing to their bioinspired heparin-mimicking gel structure. Simulated BIL selective adsorption experiments in vitro demonstrate that the BIL concentrations in the plasma of a patient with severe jaundice can be restored to a moderate level within 3 hours. Therefore, hydrogel beads offer new options for clinical BIL adsorption.

Synthesis of a furfural-based DOPO-containing co-curing agent for fire-safe epoxy resins

Weiqi Xie,Shiwen Huang,Donglin Tang,Shumei Liu,Jianqing Zhao

A furfural-based DOPO-containing flame retardant, 6,6′-(((methylenebis(4,1-phenylene))bis(azanediyl))bis(furan-2-ylmethylene))bis(dibenzo[c,e][1,2]oxaphosphinine 6-oxide) (MBF-DOPO), was synthesized and utilized as a co-curing agent of 4,4′-diaminodiphenyl methane (DDM) for fire-safe epoxy thermosets. For the cured epoxy resin containing 4.0% MBF-DOPO, the limiting oxygen index (LOI) reached 32.9% (with the V-0 rating in UL-94 test), and the peak heat release rate and total smoke production values were respectively decreased by 29.3% and 33.6%, compared to pure epoxy resin. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) results confirmed that the furfural-based flame retardant MBF-DOPO promoted the charring formation of the epoxy matrix, which effectively isolated the gas and heat transfer during combustion and thus enhanced the fire-safety performance of the epoxy thermosets. This work provides an effective route for synthesizing a furfural-based flame retardant, which possesses great potential for application in fire-safe epoxy thermosets.

Solid Polymer Electrolytes with Flexible Framework of SiO2 Nanofibers for Highly Safe Solid Lithium Batteries

Jin Cui,Zehao Zhou,Mengyang Jia,Xin Chen,Chuan Shi,Ning Zhao,Xiangxin Guo

Composite electrolytes consisting of polymers and three-dimensional (3D) fillers are considered to be promising electrolytes for solid lithium batteries owing to their virtues of continuous lithium-ion pathways and good mechanical properties. In the present study, an electrolyte with polyethylene oxide–lithium (bis trifluoromethyl) sulfate–succinonitrile (PLS) and frameworks of three-dimensional SiO2nanofibers (3D SiO2NFs) was prepared. Taking advantage of the highly conductive interfaces between 3D SiO2NFs and PLS, the total conductivity of the electrolyte at 30 °C was approximately 9.32 × 10−5S cm−1. With a thickness of 27 μm and a tensile strength of 7.4 MPa, the electrolyte achieved an area specific resistance of 29.0 Ω cm2. Moreover, such a 3D configuration could homogenize the electrical field, which was beneficial for suppressing dendrite growth. Consequently, Li/LiFePO4cells assembled with PLS and 3D SiO2NFs (PLS/3D SiO2NFs), which delivered an original specific capacity of 167.9 mAh g−1, only suffered 3.28% capacity degradation after 100 cycles. In particular, these cells automatically shut down when PLS was decomposed above 400 °C, and the electrodes were separated by the solid framework of 3D SiO2NFs. Therefore, the solid lithium batteries based on composite electrolytes reported here offer high safety at elevated temperatures. Keywords:solid polymer electrolytes;polyethylene oxides;three-dimensional SiO2nanofibers;safety;solid lithium batteries

Nanoporous Aramid Nanofiber Separators with High Modulus and Thermal Stability for Safe Lithium-Ion Batteries

Shaopeng Liu,Sha Cheng,Cheng Huang,Jin Han,Jingjing Xie,Pengchao Zhang,Ya You,Wen Chen,Zhengyi Fu

Developing high-safety separators is a promising strategy to prevent thermal runaway in lithium-ion batteries (LIBs), which stems from the low melting temperatures and inadequate modulus of commercial polyolefin separators. However, achieving high modulus and thermal stability, along with uniform nanopores in these separators, poses significant challenges. Herein, the study presents ultrathin nanoporous aramid nanofiber (ANF) separators with high modulus and excellent thermal stability, enhancing the safety of LIBs. These separators are produced using a microfluidic-based continuous printing strategy, where the flow thickness can be meticulously controlled at the micrometer scale. This method allows for the continuous fabrication of nanoporous ANF separators with thicknesses ranging from 1.6 ± 0.1 µm to 2.7 ± 0.1 µm. Thanks to the double-side solvent diffusion, the separators exhibit controllably uniform pore sizes with a narrow distribution, spanning from 40 ± 5 nm to 105 ± 9 nm, and a high modulus of 3.3 ± 0.5 GPa. These nanoporous ANF separators effectively inhibit lithium dendrite formation, resulting in a high-capacity retention rate for the LIBs (80% after 240 cycles). Most notably, their robust structural and mechanical stability at elevated temperatures significantly enhances LIB safety under transient thermal abuse conditions, thus addressing critical safety concerns associated with LIBs.

Discovery of a peripherally restricted α2AAR agonist as a safe and broad-spectrum oral analgesic

Zhiqiang Cheng,Cedric Moore,Haijiao Li,Yang Xu,Larry Zhu

The development of safe, non-opioid analgesics remains a pressing challenge. The α 2A -adrenergic receptor (α 2A AR) is a valid analgesic target, yet clinical translation has been hindered by dose-limiting central side effects. We discover CC10137, an orally bioavailable, peripherally restricted α 2A AR agonist that produces a robust, dose-dependent anti-allodynic effect across eight murine pain models, without causing sedation, hypotension, or hypothermia. Co-administration of CC10137 (1 mg/kg, p.o.) and morphine (1 mg/kg s.c.) robustly reverses allodynia by 86% in a neuropathic pain model, surpassing either drug alone (∼45%) or a 3-fold higher morphine dose (3 mg/kg, s.c., 65%). This synergy is further replicated in a cancer pain model. Unlike morphine, CC10137 does not impair spinal nociceptive reflex in a tail-flick model, preserving an essential protective mechanism. CC10137 can thus selectively suppress allodynia under a broad spectrum of pathological pain conditions with a favorable safety profile, highlighting its potential as a standalone or combination therapeutic for chronic pain.

Renal-Targeted Inulin-Based Gd/Zn Hybrids for Safe MRI Contrast and Early Fibrosis Mitigation

Dandan Wang,Wenyi Zhang,Lin Chen,Yunxiao Mai,Haoran Wang,Zhenwei Miao,Yang Zhao

Purpose Gadolinium-based contrast agents (GBCAs), which are indispensable for magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), carry a severe risk of nephrogenic systemic fibrosis (NSF) in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD), particularly in those with advanced renal impairment. This critical safety concern necessitates the development of biocompatible alternatives that do not compromise diagnostic efficacy.Materials and Methods Inulin-based nanoparticles (Inulin@Gd/Zn NPs) were synthesized by chelating inulin with gadolinium and zinc ions, aimed at being used as contrast agents that can replace conventional GBCAs. The morphology, size, and zeta potential of the nanoparticles were determined. The anti-fibrotic ability of Inulin@Gadolinium/zinc nanoparticles (Inulin@Gd/Zn NPs) was evaluated in vitro and in vivo, as well as their MRI imaging ability and metabolic performance in normal and fibrotic kidneys. A unilateral ureteral obstruction (UUO) model was created in mice and was used to evaluate the in vivo anti-fibrotic efficacy. Results The ultra-small Inulin@Gd/Zn NPs (<10 nm) exhibited high stability and T1 relaxivity. Compared to Gadolinium diethylenetriaminepentaacetic acid (Gd-DTPA), Inulin@Gd/Zn NPs demonstrated precise kidney targeting, excellent T1-weighted MRI capabilities, and rapid renal clearance. In vitro studies showed that Inulin@Gd/Zn NPs had very low cytotoxicity for HK-2 cells up to 100 µM. Further, the NPs were able to reduce reactive oxygen species generation in hydrogen peroxide–stimulated HK-2 cells. Negligible levels of hemolysis and organ toxicity were confirmed in vivo. Further, in the UUO model, administration of Inulin@Gd/Zn NPs was found to significantly inhibit fibrosis. Both in vitro and in vivo experiments demonstrated that Inulin@Gd/Zn alleviated GBCA-induced early tubulointerstitial fibrosis by inhibiting the transforming growth factor-β1 (TGF-β1) signaling pathway. Conclusion Inulin@Gd/Zn NPs represent a promising strategy for clinical application of GBCAs. It addresses the diagnostic and therapeutic challenges in patients with CKD, offering a paradigm shift in the safe application of GBCAs in high-risk populations, indicating the need for further clinical trials to enable clinical applications.

Highly Reversible and Safe Zinc-Metal Anodes Enabled by a Functional and Antibacterial Interfacial Layer

Yaping Wang,Jian Li,Li Wang,Yifang Zhang,Anqiang Pan

Indisciplinable dendrite growth, harsh side reactions, and sluggish kinetics at the Zn electrode/electrolyte interface severely obstruct the commercialization of zinc-metal batteries. Besides, the development of wearable devices has set a higher demand for the safety and biocompatibility of batteries. Herein, an in situ acid dipping approach is devised to spontaneously construct a functional and antibacterial interfacial layer containing carbonyl oxygen groups on the surface of zinc foils, using aqueous malic acid (denoted as MZ@Zn electrode) to tackle the above issues. The interfacial layer possesses satisfactory zincophilicity, promoting the ion kinetics and homogenizing the Zn deposition/dissolution. The MZ layer tightly adhered to the Zn electrode, and the deliberately exposed (0 0 2) Zn planes assure favorable anticorrosive quality. Moreover, the MZ layer possesses high antimicrobial activity, ensuring biological safety. Consequently, the MZ@Zn electrodes display ultralong cycle stability over 3500 h at 5 mA cm −2 . Furthermore, the full cells installed with LiFePO 4 /C (LFP/C) and NH 4 V 4 O 10 (NVO) cathodes exhibit superior electrochemical performances. Therefore, the stabilized zinc-metal anode achieved by acid etching to spontaneously construct a functional interfacial layer provides a simple and effective strategy for aqueous zinc-metal batteries.

Boron nitride nanosheet-reinforced glass-fiber separator for safe and high-performance aluminum-ion batteries

Zebing Liu,Ding Cai,Xiaoyu Yang,Junhao Cao,Ning Ma,Yuran Wang,Mengxue Zhao,Fang Cai,Wei Wu

High-performance separators are crucial for the development of aluminum-ion batteries (AIBs). In this work, boron nitride nanosheets (BNNSs) are prepared via a low-cost, environmentally benign, and scalable method developed in our laboratory, yielding few-layer nanosheets with enlarged interlayer spacing, suppressed restacking, and oxygen-containing surface functionalities. The BNNSs are uniformly deposited onto commercial glass-fiber (GF) separators through vacuum-assisted filtration, forming BNNSs@GF composite membranes with improved electrolyte wettability, enhanced mechanical robustness, and intrinsic flame-retardant characteristics. Electrochemical evaluations demonstrate that BNNSs@GF separators effectively regulate ion transport and homogenize interfacial ion flux, thereby stabilizing aluminum deposition behavior and enhancing interfacial stability. When applied in Al||graphite full cells, the BNNSs@GF separator enables a high discharge capacity of about 130 mAh·g −1 at 1000 mA g −1 , which is more than 2.5 times higher than that of cells using pristine GF separators. It exhibits excellent rate reversibility (≈89 % capacity recovery) and outstanding cycling stability, retaining about 40 mAh·g −1 after 2000 cycles at 2000 mA g −1 (≈80 % capacity retention). This work demonstrates a robust separator-engineering strategy based on two-dimensional BNNSs for developing high-performance, durable, and safer aluminum-ion batteries.

Copper doped carbon dots for selective determination of regulated aniline additives and safe hair dyeing

Zhanghong Guo,Lin Zhou,Liping Zhang,Haining Cui,Jinxin Ma,Chan Wang,Qijun Song

Background Hair dyes, as common daily chemical products, have been integrated into human daily life. However, the aniline additives contained in traditional hair dyes pose potential threats to health. Therefore, it is of great importance to develop an eco-friendly and convenient detection method and to explore safe alternatives. In this context, enzymatic catalysis technology has received widespread attention due to its safety and eco-friendliness. Results Herein, copper-doped carbon dots (CuCDs) with laccase-like activity were prepared by a one-step calcination of copper sulfate, amaranth and ammonium chloride. The resultant CuCDs are monodispersed ellipsoidal crystals with an average diameter of 3.4 nm and active copper centers similar to that of natural laccase. Enzyme kinetics experiments demonstrated that the maximum rate constant (V max ) obtained from CuCDs is 59 times greater than that of natural laccase, and the Michaelis-Menten constant ( K m ) is only about half that of natural laccase, indicating a high affinity for laccase substrate. The CuCDs also exhibited a superior stability in comparison with the natural laccase, as over 90 % of their catalytic activity can be maintained in wide pH, temperatures and more than 30 days storage. In the presence of oxygen, CuCDs can not only catalyze the chromogenic reaction of o -phenylenediamine (OPD) and p -phenylenediamine (PPD), allowing for the selective and rapid quantification of these aniline additives in hair dye products, but also catalyze the polymerization of dopamine (DA) under ambient conditions for hair dyeing. Significance This work not only provides an effective method for the determination of aniline additives in hair dyes, but also offers new approaches for safe hair dyeing, and expands the application of carbon nanomaterials in the cosmetics field.

A highly fire-safe wood hybrid based on delignification and multi-component co-impregnation strategies

Fei Xiao,Wei Peng,Kaiyuan Li,Bihe Yuan,Gaëlle Fontaine,Serge Bourbigot

Natural wood is a pervasive sustainable structural material with efficiency, aesthetically pleasing, usefulness, and durability, which is widely used in building construction. However, the fire safety of wood is unsatisfactory for many advanced engineering structures and applications. To address this issue, a highly fire-safe wood hybrid was developed, inspired by transparent wood, through partial delignification and co-impregnation with multi-component flame retardants. The results showed that partial removal of lignin from wood (∼5 wt%) significantly increased the loading of flame retardants from 70 wt% to 133 wt%. Furthermore, it provided exceptional self-extinguishing and fire retardancy to the wood hybrid. The vertical burning test revealed that the wood hybrid did not self-propagate when directly exposed to an open flame and rapidly self-extinguished when removed from the igniting flame. Notably, it did not ignite at an external heat flux of 50 kW/m 2 (cone calorimetry experiment), and the recorded peak heat release rate was reduced by more than 85 % compared to the original wood. It is demonstrated that the co-impregnation of guanidine phosphate and boric acid modifies the thermal decomposition pathway of wood hybrid during burning, allowing the wood to form homogeneous and dense char residues. These carbonaceous structures were embedded with phosphate and borophosphate species, which provide the char residues with improved resistance to oxidation and higher thermal stability, preventing heat and oxygen from infiltrating the underlying wood. In summary, this work provides a facile delignification and co-impregnation strategy that greatly improves the fire retardancy of wood and represents a promising approach toward highly fire-safe structural materials.

Intrinsic-safe polymer electrolyte enabling fast kinetics by accelerated dissociation and transport of Li-ion

Shenghao Zhang,Yun Chen,Lingjie Huang,Mengyu Liu,Qingliang Lv,Zexing Wu,Jianping Lai,Yuanxiang Gu,Lei Wang,Caixia Li

Sluggish Li + ion transference kinetics and high flammability strictly hinder the practical application of lithium batteries based on solid-state polymer electrolytes (SPEs). Herein, guided by theoretical calculation, a modified organic flame retardant synthesized by blending diphenyl phosphoryl chloride and resveratrol is designed, named as DPPR and displays superior compatibility with polyethylene oxide (PEO) by hydrogen bonds. Thus, the as-constructed versatile electrolyte system (P-DPPR) can improve mechanical, flame-retardant, and migration kinetics properties of PEO simultaneously. With P-DPPR electrolyte, the Li//Li cell operates 1000 h at 0.1 cm −1 , DPPR can greatly decrease activation energy from 0.31 eV to 0.16, Li + transference number of DPPR is 0.76, the LiFePO 4 //Li cell can work from −10 to 60 °C and achieves high-capacity retention rate of 97.2 % after 100 cycles at 25 °C. As revealed by in-situ tests and simulation, the fast ion conductivity can be ascribed to the synergistic effect from promoted dissociation of LiTFSI by π-π interaction, and the accelerated delivery by P O sites in P-DPPR. This work fabricates a composite SPE with high stability, fast kinetics, and safety capabilities, offering a novel perspective for the design of intrinsically safe batteries.

Dual-enzyme cascade colorimetric biosensor for safe, rapid on-site detection and detoxification of ochratoxins

Xiao Liang,Zhuobing Zhang,Yilei Du,Ziliang Li,Nana Xu,Jian Gao,Huimin Qin,Liping Du,Song You,Jinshan Li,Weidong Liu,Yanhe Ma

Ochratoxins, toxic mycotoxins present in food and feed, pose a threat to human health due to their various toxic effects. Developing a safe, convenient, and rapid on-site detection tool for monitoring ochratoxins is essential for food and environmental safety, especially in developing countries. Although numerous effective ochratoxin sensing and detection systems are available, most do not combine detoxification with detection capabilities. In this work, an ochratoxin-detoxifying enzyme was cascaded with phenylalanine dehydrogenase to construct a colorimetric biosensor capable of simultaneously detecting and removing Ochratoxin A (OTA) and Ochratoxin B (OTB) contamination. Once the ochratoxins are detoxified into non-toxic OTα/OTβ and phenylalanine, 1-methoxy-5-methylphenazinium methyl sulfate (MPMS) functions as a signal reporter, converting the ochratoxin concentration into a colorimetric signal that gradually shifts from red to green. This allows for real-time visual observation with the naked eye. Additionally, OTA/OTB within a concentration range of 0–50 μg/mL can be quantitatively analyzed using a microplate reader or a smartphone. Under the optimized conditions, the colorimetric biosensor effectively eliminated and detected OTA/OTB at a spiked concentration of 5 μg/L in Chinese liquor samples within 1 h. Hence, the dual-enzyme cascade colorimetric biosensor has been demonstrated to be a safe, portable, rapid, and accurate tool for the detection and elimination of OTA/OTB in food.
