Catalytic Conversion of Xylose and Xylan into Furfural Over Cr3+/P-SBA-15 Catalyst Derived from Spent Adsorbent

Siquan Xu,Donghui Pan,Yuanfeng Wu,Jingdeng Fan,Ningxin Wu,Lijing Gao,Wenqi Li,Guomin Xiao

The mesoporous SBA-15 has long been used as an adsorbent for the removal of toxic metal ions. Achieving secondary utilize of spent adsorbent is undoubtedly an advisible option for environmental protection and recycling economy. In the present study, phosphoric acid-modified SBA-15 (P-SBA-15) was found to be an available adsorbent, and the composites (Cr3+/P-SBA-15) formed after adsorption of Cr3+ ions have the ability to efficiently catalyze the conversion of xylose and xylan into furfural. The physicochemical properties of the Cr3+/P-SBA-15 composites were characterized, and the effects of various reaction parameters on their catalytic performance were also investigated. Among the Cr3+/P-SBA-15 composites with different Cr3+ contents, the (0.25)Cr3+/P-SBA-15 composite not only achieved excellent 91% and 58% furfural yields from xylose and xylan, but also had almost constant catalytic performance after five cycles. The findings herein provided a reference for achieving high yields of furfural and reuse of spent adsorbents.

Enhanced catalytic performance of molybdenum-doped mesoporous SBA-15 for metathesis of 1-butene and ethene to propene

Chao Lin,Kai Tao,Hongbo Yu,Dayin Hua,Shenghu Zhou

Molybdenum-doped mesoporous SBA-15, mesoporous SBA-15-supported MoO3/SBA-15, and traditional silica-supported MoO3/SiO2 were successfully synthesized. Various techniques, such as XRD, TEM, BET, UV-DRS, Raman, XPS and IR, were used to characterize the above obtained materials. The studies of TEM, XRD and BET confirmed that the highly ordered mesoporous structure of SBA-15 was maintained in the doped Mo-SBA-15 whereas supported MoO3/SBA-15 showed a significant reduction in surface area due to the deposition of MoO3 nanoparticles into the SBA-15 channels. XPS studies revealed that a high concentration of Mo5+ species appeared in doped Mo-SBA-15 whereas supported MoO3/SBA-15 and MoO3/SiO2 only contained Mo6+ species. The metathesis reaction of 1-butene and ethene to propene was used to evaluate the catalytic performance of Mo-containing materials. The doped Mo-SBA-15 illustrated a superior catalytic performance over the supported MoO3/SBA-15 and MoO3/SiO2 catalysts. The enhancement of catalytic performance for doped Mo-SBA-15 was assigned to the incorporation of Mo species into the SBA-15 framework. Due to the doping method, Mo-SBA-15 exhibited a well-ordered mesoporous structure, a high surface area, and a high concentration of Mo5+ species, which is beneficial to the catalytic performance for metathesis reactions.

Synthesis and structural characterization of novel visible photocatalyst Bi–TiO2/SBA-15 and its photocatalytic performance

Jing Ma,Jia Chu,Liangsheng Qiang,Juanqin Xue

Bi-doped TiO2/SBA-15 (Bi–TiO2/SBA-15) was synthesized by a wet impregnation method. It was found that SBA-15 retained its ordered hexagonal mesostructure after incorporation of TiO2 and Bi. TiO2 nanoparticles and Bi species dispersed well and anchored both in the channel and the wall of SBA-15. The photocatalytic activity was evaluated on photodegradation of Rhodamine B (RhB) under visible light irradiation (λ ≥ 420 nm). Experimental results indicated that Bi–TiO2/SBA-15 exhibited higher photocatalytic activities than pure TiO2 and TiO2/SBA-15 owing to the synergetic effects of Bi species and TiO2. The degradation of RhB by these catalysts follows the pseudo-first-order kinetic model and Bi–TiO2/SBA-15 (2.0%) was found to be the best. The effect of Bi doping on the photocatalytic activity was investigated by the density functional theory (DFT) method. The calculated results indicated that Bi doping could improve the photocatalytic activity by extending the spectral response from UV to the visible region, making the Bi–TiO2/SBA-15 active under visible light irradiation.

Efficient hydrogen generation from formic acid using AgPd nanoparticles immobilized on carbon nitride-functionalized SBA-15

Lixin Xu,Bo Jin,Jian Zhang,Dang-guo Cheng,Fengqiu Chen,Yue An,Ping Cui,Chao Wan

Bimetallic AgPd nanoparticles were successfully immobilized on graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) functionalized SBA-15 for the first time by a facile co-reduction method. These catalysts were applied in the decomposition of formic acid. The dehydrogenation of formic acid is dependent on the composition of AgPd and the content of carbon nitride (CN). Among all of the AgPd/mCND/SBA-15 catalysts tested, the Ag10Pd90/0.2CND/SBA-15 catalyst exhibits highly superior performance for the decomposition of formic acid into high-quality hydrogen at 323 K with 100% hydrogen selectivity and a turnover frequency of 893 h−1, which is among the maximum values obtained at 323 K in this paper. The improved performance is a promising step towards the utilization of formic acid as a hydrogen storage material.

Ru subnanoparticles on N-doped carbon layer coated SBA-15 as efficient Catalysts for arene hydrogenation

Wei Qian,Lina Lin,Yunxiang Qiao,Xiuge Zhao,Zichen Xu,Honghui Gong,Difan Li,Manyu Chen,Rong Huang,Zhenshan Hou

The N-doped carbon layer coated SBA-15 support has been accomplished via a pyrolysis process . The ultra-low loading Ru nanoparticles ( ca. 0.1 wt.%) was incorporated into the support by impregnation and the sequential reduction. The images of HAADF-STEM revealed that the Ru particles with sub-1-nm size (0.2-0.7 nm) were uniformly dispersed on the support. The ultrafine Ru particles displayed the excellent activity for the hydrogenation of olefins , arenes, phenol derivatives and heteroarenes in aqueous phase. The aliphatic or alicyclic compounds were produced selectively without the hydrogenolysis of C O and C N bonds. The high turnover frequency (TOF) values can reach up to 10,000 h −1 . Notably, the activity of these catalysts improved dramatically with decreasing the sizes of Ru particles. Meanwhile, the N-doped carbon layer coating endowed the high stability of the Ru catalysts and prevented the leaching of the Ru species owning to the strong interaction between doped-N atoms and the ultrafine Ru particles. Overall, this work provides a highly attractive strategy to construct the supported sub-1-nm Ru particles utilized for the aqueous hydrogenation.

Enhanced CO2 adsorptive performance of PEI/SBA-15 adsorbent using phosphate ester based surfactants as additives

Dandan Cheng,Yue Liu,Haiqiang Wang,Xiaole Weng,Zhongbiao Wu

In this study, a series of polyetherimide/SBA-15: 2-D hexagonal P6mm, Santa Barbara USA (PEI/SBA-15) adsorbents modified by phosphoric ester based surfactants (including tri(2-ethylhexyl) phosphate (TEP), bis(2-ethylhexyl) phosphate (BEP) and trimethyl phosphonoacetate (TMPA)) were prepared for CO 2 adsorption. Experimental results indicated that the addition of TEP and BEP had positive effects on CO 2 adsorption capacity over PEI/SBA-15. In particular, the CO 2 adsorption amount could be improved by around 20% for 45PEI–5TEP/SBA-15 compared to the additive-free adsorbent. This could be attributed to the decrease of CO 2 diffusion resistance in the PEI bulk network due to the interactions between TEP and loaded PEI molecules, which was further confirmed by adsorption kinetics results. In addition, it was also found that the cyclic performance of the TEP-modified adsorbent was better than the surfactant-free one. This could be due to two main reasons, based on the results of in situ DRIFT and TG-DSC tests. First and more importantly, adsorbed CO 2 species could be desorbed more rapidly over TEP-modified adsorbent during the thermal desorption process. Furthermore, the enhanced thermal stability after TEP addition ensured lower degradation of amine groups during adsorption/desorption cycles.

Optimizing CO2 Hydrogenation to DME through Tailored Interfacial Interactions: Weakening Synergy in CuZnZr and Al-Modified SBA-15 Catalysts

Chi Sun,Yudong Xia,Xue Ye,Wenlin Xu,Hui Shi,Xinhua Gao,Jinghao Yu,Lisheng Guo,Jie Li

The direct dimethyl ether (DME) synthesis reaction via CO2 hydrogenation typically requires a bifunctional catalyst that effectively combines a methanol synthesis catalyst with a methanol dehydration catalyst, but the effect of the relationship between the two catalysts on the catalytic performance has not been as well studied. In this study, we developed a CuZnZr/Al–S(10)-PG bifunctional catalyst physically mixed with Al-modified SBA-15 and the traditional CuZnZr catalyst for the hydrogenation of CO2 to DME. A pivotal discovery is that the modulation of interaction intensity between these two constituents significantly influences the electronic configuration of each component. Through X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy characterization and methanol dehydration experiments, it was confirmed that diminishing the synergistic interplay between CuZnZr and Al-modified SBA-15, which regulated the electronic structure of the Cu–Zn interface and enhanced the Cu–Zn interfacial interaction, played a crucial role in enhancing the catalyst’s performance in CO2 hydrogenation to DME. This finding contests established beliefs about the necessity of strong synergistic interactions in such systems and provides new insights for designing rational bifunctional catalysts.

Facile synthesis of HPW@MOF-199 embedded in SBA-15 functionalized with -COOH groups as a steady catalyst for the esterification reaction

Yibo Zhang,Wei Wang,Chunlai Liu,Peihang Shen,Zelong Liu,Jianglei Hu,Fengwei Shi

In this work, we successfully synthesized a novel composite (HPW@MOF-199/SBA-15C, PMS-15C) in which MOF-199 encapsulated HPW catalyst (named HPW@MOF-199) was confined in SBA-15C, which is the carboxy-functionalized SBA-15. Physicochemical properties of the composites PMS-15C were systemically characterized by N 2 adsorption–desorption isotherms, wide-angle and low-angle XRD, XPS, FT-IR, SEM, and TEM. The results exhibited that HPW@MOF-199 had been successfully synthesized and embedded into the SBA-15C pores by COOH on the surface of SBA-15C. Meanwhile, the composites PMS-15C exhibited high activity and excellent reuse properties in the esterification reaction of acetic acid and ethanol, and no evidence of aggregation, leaching, or inactivation of HPW@MOF-199 during repeated use. The good dispersion of HPW within the MOF-199 cage and the interaction between HPW@MOF-199 and SBA-15C may be responsible for the good catalytic activity as well as the high stability of PMS-15C.

Electromagnetic wave absorption of 1T’ WTe2/SBA-15 composites in the S band enhanced through heterogeneous interfaces and defect engineering

Ziheng Wei,Yongping Liu,Qi Ding,Yuena Zhang,Yu Ren,Jihu Chen,Mingming Si,Yuchi Fan,Wan Jiang

Conductive two-dimensional (2D) materials exhibit excellent electromagnetic wave (EMW) absorption properties at high frequencies due to their high conductivity loss. However, their unsatisfactory EMW absorption at low frequencies, attributed to impedance mismatch, remains a significant challenge. In this work, high-conductivity 1T′ WTe 2 nanosheets were incorporated into insulating mesoporous channels of Santa Barbara Amorphous-15 (SBA-15) via chemical vapor deposition (CVD), resulting in the formation of 1T′ WTe 2 /SBA-15 composites. These mesoporous channels restrict the growth of 1T′ WTe 2 and hinder carrier migration cross the channels, reducing their conductivity. Meanwhile, heterogeneous interfaces were formed between 1T′ WTe 2 nanosheets and mesoporous channels of SBA-15, accompanied by defects within the 1T′ WTe 2 nanosheets. This interaction promotes dipole polarization losses, significantly enhancing the attenuation of incident EMW, particularly at low frequencies. Consequently, the effective absorption bandwidth (EAB) of 1T’ WTe 2 /SBA-15 composites within the S band reached to 0.72 GHz, ranging from 3.28 GHz to 4.0 GHz, with a minimum reflection loss (RL min ) of −26.5 dB at 3.68 GHz. Furthermore, the EAB of the composites extended to 3.92 GHz at 1.5 mm in the high-frequency range. This work introduces a novel strategy for enhancing EMW absorption performance in the S band through heterogeneous interfaces and defect engineering, driven by the limiting effects of mesoporous channels.

The generation of hydroxyl radicals by hydrogen peroxide decomposition on FeOCl/SBA-15 catalysts for phenol degradation

Xue-jing Yang,Peng-fei Tian,Xiao-man Zhang,Xin Yu,Ting Wu,Jing Xu,Yi-fan Han

Iron oxychloride (FeOCl) supported on mesoporous silica (SBA-15), as a Fenton-like solid catalyst for phenol degradation, showed supreme activity for production of hydroxyl radical (HO·) by H 2 O 2 decomposition, and the generation capacity was comparable to the conventional Fenton reagent (Fe 2+ +H 2 O 2 ). The structure of FeOCl was characterized with spectroscopies. The generation of HO· species during the reaction was detected using 5,5-dimethyl-1-pyrroline N-oxide trapped electron paramagnetic resonance. Furthermore, the kinetics in detail was driven for the creation and diffusion of HO· by H 2 O 2 decomposition over FeOCl, which follows a first-order rate through a two-step reaction. With the combination of the catalyst structure and kinetic parameters, the plausible mechanism for H 2 O 2 decomposition during the oxidative degradation of phenol was rationalized. As a Fenton-like solid catalyst, FeOCl/SBA-15 is a promising alternative for the removal of low-level organic contaminates from water. © 2014 American Institute of Chemical Engineers AIChE J , 61: 166–176, 2015

Improvement Effect of Ni to Pd-Ni/SBA-15 Catalyst for Selective Hydrogenation of Cinnamaldehyde to Hydrocinnamaldehyde

Shiying Han,Yunfei Liu,Jiang Li,Rui Li,Fulong Yuan,Yujun Zhu

A series of Pd-Ni bimetallic catalysts supported on SBA-15 (0.2%Pd-x%Ni/SBA-15, x = 0.4, 0.7, and 1.2) were prepared through the impregnation method combined with the NaBH4reduction method. X-ray diffraction (XRD), N2adsorption-desorption, X-ray photoemission spectroscopy (XPS) and transmission electron microscope (TEM) were used to characterize the prepared catalysts. All the synthesized catalysts were evaluated for the liquid-phase hydrogenation of cinnamaldehyde (CAL). The addition of Ni obviously enhanced the CAL conversion and selectivity of C=C hydrogenation to hydrocinnamaldehyde (HALD) over the 0.2%Pd-x%Ni/SBA-15 catalysts. Meanwhile, 0.2%Pd-1.2%Ni/SBA-15 showed the best performance with 96.3% conversion and 87.8% selectivity toward HALD. This improvement was attributed to the synergistic effect between the Pd and Ni nanoparticles, enhancing the dispersion of Pd metal particles and increasing the content of surface Pd0species. In addition, the influences of a few reaction factors including H2pressure, reaction temperature, and reaction time were studied over 0.2%Pd-1.2%Ni/SBA-15.Keywords:selective hydrogenation;cinnamaldehyde;hydrocinnamaldehyde;synergistic effect;Pd-Ni/SBA-15

A Novel Ternary Catalyst PW4@MOF-808@SBA-15 for Deep Extraction Oxidation Desulfurization of Model Diesel

Yan Gao,Shuai Huang,Nina Han,Jianshe Zhao

In this work, a novel heterogeneous catalyst consisting of peroxophosphotungstate, microporous MOF-808, and mesoporous SBA-15 was synthesized, characterized, and used to remove sulfides from model fuel. The prepared material, PW4@MOF-808@SBA-15, exhibits excellent catalytic activity with a desulfurization efficiency of 99.8% in 60 min for multicomponent simulated fuel, and the desulfurization rate can reach more than 90% after ten consecutive cycles. The excellent catalytic activity and reusability are attributed to the hierarchically porous hybrid material MOF-808@SBA-15, which can effectively encapsulate PW4and provide a site for the oxidation of sulfides.
