Considerable efforts have been exerted to understand the formation and properties of the solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) in sodium ion batteries. However, the puzzling existence and role of SEI behind the huge volume changes of the graphite electrodes need to be answered. Herein, the reason of how ether-derived SEI maintains excellent reversibility despite the huge volume changes during cycling is unraveled. Theoretical simulations and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy demonstrate the formation mechanism of an SEI between the graphite anode and electrolyte. Furthermore, the high mechanical tolerance of the ether-derived SEI is confirmed in atomic force microscopy. A depth profile of X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy points to a multilayer structure of the ether-derived SEI. The outer layer comprises organics (sodium alkoxide), while the inorganics (Na 2 CO 3 , NaF) in interior region are mixed with some organics. Notably, the presence of organics ensures the adaptability of the SEI to the volume expansion of graphite during cycling, and the concentrated distribution of inorganics improves the Young's modulus (resistance to deformation). Therefore, the graphite anode exhibits high cycle stability (96.6% capacity retention ratio at 1 A g –1 over 860 cycles) and efficiency (≈99.5%).

Building lithium fluoride (LiF)-rich solid electrolyte interphases (SEIs) by the decomposition of fluorinated salts has been widely adopted to be effective to suppress lithium dendrite growth, thus prolonging the lifespan of fast-charging lithium metal batteries (LMBs). Nevertheless, the slow dissociation of LiF salts reduces both their utilization and the formation of inorganic SEI. Herein, cellulose acetate (CA) was incorporated into the electrolyte to create an inorganic-rich SEI through ester groups, where the lithiophilic oxygen atoms in the ester group (C═O) enhanced lithium-ion diffusion and anion dissociation rates. Therefore, rapid ion diffusion and dendrite-free anodes were achieved in the ester-based electrolyte with CA (named as CA-E). As a result, the lithium symmetric batteries with the CA-E electrolyte exhibited stable cycling performance for 5,000 h at a current density/capacity of 3 mA cm−2/1 mAh cm−2, while a short-circuiting was observed after ~450 h for the bare electrolyte. Benefiting from the rational design, lithium iron phosphate batteries with the CA-E electrolyte showed an excellent C-rate performance with a capacity of 100.7 mAh g−1 at the rate of 10 C. Moreover, a specific capacity of 110.3 mAh g−1 was maintained after 300 cycles at the rate of 6 C with a Coulombic efficiency of 99.87%. This work proposes a new approach to dendrite inhibitors for fast-charging LMBs.

Chemical prelithiation is an effective method to compensate for the loss of active lithium due to the formation of solid electrolyte interface, effectively addressing the issue of low initial coulombic efficiency (ICE) in silicon/carbon (Si/C) materials. Herein, the Si/C anode is prelithiated in a 1 M lithium-phenanthrene/2-methyltetrahydrofuran (Li-Phe/2-MTHF) solution in our work, and the prelithiated Si/C anode is followed by post-treatment with commercial electrolytes containing lithium difluorobis(oxalato)phosphate (LiDFBOP). The PSi/C-L 0.5 , originated from the reaction between residual Li-Phe/2-MTHF and the commercial electrolyte containing 0.5 wt% LiDFBOP, possesses the artificial SEI film, which not only contains a proper amount of LiF but also is rich in Li 2 C 2 O 4 and Li 3 P. Among them, LiF and Li 2 C 2 O 4 ensures the stability of the SEI film. Simultaneously, the synergistic effect of Li 3 P and LiF improves its Li + transport kinetics. Therefore, the ICE of PSi/C-L 0.5 reaches 92.50 %, and almost no drop in capacity occurs after 100 cycles at 0.5 A/g. Furthermore, the capacity stays steady at about 270 mAh/g through nearly 500 cycles at 1 A/g, achieving an impressive capacity retention rate of 97.8 %, significantly outperforming un-treated Si/C. This study offers new directions for constructing SEI films with stable structures and high Li + kinetics transport.

Regulating the artificial solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) and interfacial solvation structure of the electrolyte is crucial for developing rechargeable magnesium batteries (RMBs) with long cycling life, high current density tolerance, and fast ion transport capability operated under extreme environments, such as low temperatures. Herein, an effective strategy using oligomeric poly(3,4-dihydro-2H-pyran) (polyDHP) is proposed to modulate the interfacial solvation structure of RMBs, with the construction of an artificial SEI with rapid Mg-ion conductivity. The steric hindrance of polyDHP and its electrostatic interaction with Mg2+ reduce the solvent molecules in the first solvation shell, allowing polyDHP molecules to participate in coordination, thus lowering the desolvation energy barrier of Mg2+ and facilitating their deposition and stripping. Furthermore, due to the glass transition behavior, oligomeric polyDHP exhibits a more ordered structure with more continuous internal ion transport channels at −20 °C, therefore enabling stable RMB operation at lower temperatures for the first time. The corresponding Mg symmetric cells display a much lower overpotential (400 mV) and excellent cycling stability at both room temperature (over 5000 h at 5 mA cm–2 and 10 mA h cm–2) and a low temperature of −20 °C (over 1300 h at 3 mA cm–2 and 3 mA h cm–2). This strategy supports the stable cycling of CuS∥Mg full cells for over 200 cycles at −20 °C. This work reveals the importance of regulating the interfacial solvation structure, promoting the realistic applications of RMBs under extreme conditions.

Lithium-rich manganese-based oxides (LMOs) are regarded as promising cathodes for next-generation high-energy Li-ion batteries due to their ultrahigh discharge capacity (>250 mAh/g) and low cost. However, their practical application is significantly hindered by issues such as transition metal dissolution and structural evolution under high working voltage. In this study, a stable SEI protective film based on carbon phosphorus is successfully constructed by introducing two solid–liquid interface-stabilizing additives, ethylene carbonate (VC) and tri(pentafluorophenyl)borane (TPFPB), into the base electrolyte. This significantly enhances the interface stability between the lithium-rich manganese-based cathode material and the electrolyte, suppresses the generation of harmful HF and the dissolution of transition metals, thereby improving the overall stability of the electrode–electrolyte system. Experimental results indicate that after 200 cycles, the capacity retention of the LMO cathode is increased by 21% due to the significant suppression of nanopore formation and phase transitions. This additive optimization strategy provides promising technical guidance for the application of lithium-rich manganese-based oxide cathode materials in next-generation high-energy-density rechargeable batteries.

Sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) are viable contenders for large-scale energy storage systems owing to the plentiful supply of sodium resources. However, the poor stability of electrolyte/ electrode interface severely limits the cycle life of SIBs. Herein, sodium tetrakis[3,5-bis(trifluoromethyl)phenyl]borate (NaTFPB), a boron-centered fluorinated organic sodium salt, is used as a bifunctional additive in the Base electrolyte (NaPF 6 in EC/DMC/FEC) for NaNi 0.33 Fe 0.33 Mn 0.33 O 2 ||hard carbon pouch cells. Theoretical simulations and experimental studies demonstrate that NaTFPB modulates the first solvation shell structure of Na + and undergoes preferential redox reactions at both electrodes simultaneously. This behaviour contributes to the formation of robust interfacial layers. As a result, uniform and stable cathode electrolyte interphase (CEI) and solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) layers, enriched with NaF and boron compounds, are formed. The Ah-scale pouch cell with NaTFPB exhibits a high capacity retention of 79 % after 500 cycles at 1 C rate under room temperature. Remarkably, under harsh operational stress combining elevated temperature (45 °C) and an upper high cutoff voltage of 4.1 V, the cell retains 96 % capacity retention over 250 cycles. Additionally, it exhibits excellent low-temperature discharge capability at −20 °C. This innovative design of functional additive addresses interfacial stability challenges, advancing high-energy–density SIBs for practical applications.

Quasi-solid-state lithium metal batteries (QSSLMBs) using gel polymer electrolytes (GPEs) promise safer high-energy storage, but their performance is limited by interfacial instability that requires both fast Li + transport and durable electrode-electrolyte contact. Here we present an in-situ two-step strategy that couples electrochemical reduction with thermal curing to transform a spin-coated LiNO 3 precursor into a functionally synergistic Li 3 N/Li 2 CO 3 composite artificial SEI. The electrochemical step contributes to the formation of Li 3 N-containing ion-conducting species, while the curing step during GPE polymerization is associated with a more carbonate-rich surface that improves interfacial compatibility. DFT calculations show stronger ethylene carbonate adsorption on Li 2 CO 3 than on LiF, consistent with markedly improved wettability, as the electrolyte contact angle decreases from about 81° on cycled bare Li to about 11° on the engineered interface. The optimized anode enables stable symmetric cell cycling with 70 mV polarization for over 1200 h at 0.8 mA cm −2 , and LiFePO 4 full cells retain 95.5% capacity after 250 cycles at 0.3C and 94.4% after 300 cycles at 1C. This work shows that cooperative regulation of ion transport and contact retention within an inorganic-dominant multicomponent SEI can improve the stability of quasi-solid-state lithium metal interfaces.

Developing an artificial solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) with high Li ion flux is vital to improve the cycling stability of lithium metal batteries, especially under a high rate. In this work, a novel artificial SEI film was prepared via in situ deposition of a lithium-doped cesium lead chloride perovskite (Li–CsPbCl3). Benefiting from its ultra-high thickness (0.45 μm), high mechanical modulus (5.9 GPa), high lithium-ion migration number (0.57), and unique highly oriented framework, the Li–CsPbCl3 SEI film could promote the rapid transport and uniform deposition of lithium ions, enhancing the stability of lithium deposition and stripping. As a result, Li/Li symmetric cells based on the Li–CsPbCl3 protective film could cycle stably for 1300 hours under high current density of 10 mA cm−2. In addition, the Li/LiFePO4 battery using the Li–CsPbCl3 SEI film showed an impressive cycling stability with a capacity retention rate of up to 91.4% after 230 cycles at a high current rate of 3C.

Electrode pulverization, low electrochemical reaction kinetics and an unstable SEI layer have prevented the application of transition metal oxides with a conversion-type mechanism. Here, we describe gum arabic (GA) as a green and multi-functional binder for the fabrication of a NiFe2O4 nanotube (NFNT) electrode enabling predominant application in LIBs and NIBs. Firstly, it's revealed that the NFNTs–GA electrode possesses better mechanical properties of a higher friction coefficient, better elastic resilience and higher reduced modulus and hardness compared with a NFNTs–PVDF electrode. Secondly, the NFNTs–GA electrode can restrain the side reactions between the electrode and electrolyte, leading to the formation of a remarkably stable and thin SEI layer during discharge and charge processes. Thirdly, it is demonstrated by KPFM that the NFNTs–GA electrode possesses improved surface electrical properties and lower energy for the escape of electrons. Consequently, the NFNTs–GA electrode demonstrates much improved rate capability, cycling stability and columbic efficiency when used as an anode material for LIBs. It displays a stable capacity of 770 mA h g−1 which can be retained after 500 cycles at 0.5 A g−1. More importantly, the NFNTs–GA electrode exhibits a high initial coulombic efficiency of 73% (only 48% for the NFNTs–PVDF electrode) and enhanced electrochemical reaction kinetics with significantly improved oxidation and reduction peaks in the application of NIBs.

Lithium metal is widely utilized due to its high theoretical capacity and low electrochemical potential. However, the growth of uncontrollable lithium dendrites and increased voltage polarization during lithium stripping and plating can severely impact cycling stability. In this study, we propose a nitrogen-rich triazinyl nanoporous organic polymer (DCP-CTF) as an artificial solid–electrolyte interphase (SEI) for a lithium-metal anode. The spatial distribution of the porous layered array structure enables the gradient migration of Li+. Meanwhile, the rigid nanochannels can also restrict the excessive growth of Li depositions through the steric confinement effect and reduce the generation of lithium dendrites. By combining density functional theory calculations with Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, we demonstrate the functional lithiophilic coordination of DCP-CTF. The electron-rich triazine ring acts as a donor to attract Li+, and the pyridine nitrogen group serves as an effective lithium anchoring site. The abundant distribution of these lithiophilic sites can regulate Li+ transfer, thereby ensuring smooth lithium deposition and inhibiting dendrite formation. As a result, the DCP-CTF-modified lithium-metal anode exhibits exceptional electrochemical stability of more than 2500 h of cycling in an ether-based electrolyte at a high current density of 20 mA cm–2.

The solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) critically governs the performance of potassium-ion batteries (PIBs). However, present-day SEIs cannot prevent persistent parasitic reactions between the electrode and electrolyte due to SEI’s low energy band gap and high ion migration energy barrier. Here, we propose an SEI energy band engineering strategy by screening the band-gap width and migration energy barrier of various SEI components, and we found that the Si-O-SEI simultaneously increases SEI’s energy band gap and lowers the ion migration energy barrier to enable good electron-blocking capability and high K + ion diffusion. Our Si-O-SEI prepared in situ on the electrode surface, using a simple additive, enables carbonate-based electrolytes to achieve a highly reversible potassium plating and stripping with a Coulombic efficiency (CE) of 99.2%, together with the upgraded reversibility of the graphite anode. SEI composition and structural modulation through a simple and generic strategy provide a valuable research platform for developing high-performance PIB electrolytes.

Due to long-term operation under high voltage, the cathode of lithium metal battery undergoes parasitic reactions with the electrolyte, resulting in non-conductive polymers that severely affect the battery's electrochemical performance and kinetics. In addition, the safety performance of the battery is seriously compromised by severe lithium deposition on the lithium metal side. The use of electrolyte additives is one of the most cost-effective strategies for improvement. A low-cost boron-based additive bis(pinacolato)diboron (BDB) has been proposed in this work which has relatively high activity during battery charging and discharging. A protective cathode electrolyte interface (CEI) film was formed by BDB on the surface of NCM811 in advance to resist HF and solvent erosion. Furthermore, the solid electrolyte interface (SEI) film that BDB participates in on the lithium metal surface exhibits high ion conductivity and effectively inhibits the formation of lithium dendrites, thereby ensuring the safe operation of lithium metal batteries. The lithium metal battery utilizing BDB not only exhibits optimal electrochemical performance with a high cut-off voltage of 4.6 V, but also demonstrates potential for further development in the realms of rapid charging and discharging.
