As the world transitions towards an electric vehicle-driven future, demand for energy storage materials has continued to grow. Silicon-carbon composites are considered one of the most promising anode materials for lithium-ion batteries owing to their superior electrochemical performance. However, their commercialization is seriously limited due to the use of chemical reagents as carbon source, unstable coating structures and the complexity of the synthesis process. Herein, a facile one-step carbonization method at 800 °C was used to prepare Si@SiO X @C-800 composite by using rice husks, 1‑butyl‑3-methylimidazolium acetate (BMIMAcO) and silicon nanoparticles (Si-NPs). When the optimized Si@SiOx@C-800 was applied to the anode of lithium-ion batteries, it exhibited prominent reversible capacity (694 mAh g −1 at 0.1 A g −1 ), with remarkable rate performance (220 mAh g −1 at 2 A g −1 ), and excellent cyclic stability (460 mAh g −1 with a capacity retention of 105.7% at 1 A g −1 after 1000 cycles). The coupling of interfaces by Si-N bonds led to the formation of a double-layered structure which enhanced Li + diffusion coefficients and electrochemical kinetics, while tremendously limiting the volume variation of Si nanoparticles (Si NPs). The double-shell-structured Si@SiO X @C-800 composite material which was facilely synthesized using an eco-friendly approach presented superior electrochemical performance.

SiO x is regarded as a promising anode material for the next-generation lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) because of its high theoretical capacity. In order to relieve the volume variation and enhance the electronic and ionic conductivity , a SiO x @TiO 2 @N-doped carbon (NC) composite is prepared using biopolymer chitin as carbon precursor. The TiO 2 coating layer shields the SiO x in the alkaline chitin solution, enabling the homogeneous and stable dispersion of the SiO x during the synthesis process. After emulsion, freeze-drying, and carbonization, the SiO x @TiO 2 @NC composite is obtained. The dual-confinement of TiO 2 and NC effectively buffers the volume variation of SiO x and enhances the electronic/ionic conductivity. The enhanced structural integrity and conductivity guarantee the superior rate capability and the stable long-term cyclability of the SiO x @TiO 2 @NC composite. After 650 cycles at 0.5 and 1 A g −1 , SiO x @TiO 2 @NC maintains reversible capacities of 633 and 540 mA h g −1 , showing capacity retentions of 92.3% and 96.9%, respectively. After 100 cycles at 0.5 C, the assembled SiO x @TiO 2 @NC//LiFePO 4 full cells can retain a discharge capacity of 121 mA h g −1 , maintaining 90% of the third capacity. This work provides a chance for the industrial application of biopolymer chitin in LIBs, and may alleviate the pressure of environmental protection.

Nonstoichiometric silicon oxide (SiOx) with high theoretical capacity is a promising anode material for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). However, volume changes and poor electronic conductivity of SiOx are major impediments to its practical application. The modification of SiOx with carbonaceous materials to accommodate volume variations and improve conductivity is a valuable strategy. Nanonetwork-structured (NNS) carbons have been paid great attention because of their unique three-dimensional structure, and high electronic and ionic conductivity. Incorporating SiOx with well-designed NNS carbons is a promising method to prepare high quality electrode materials for lithium-ion batteries. In this work, a fabrication approach is developed to synthesize a 3D carbon network composed of carbonaceous hybrid nanotubes with well-dispersed SiOx nanodomains (CNT@SiOx–C) from 1D gelable bottlebrushes as network building blocks based on molecular-scale interface engineering technology. Herein, nano-sized SiOx particles are embedded into the carbonaceous matrix to prevent their volume change during cycling. The experimental results indicated that the CNT@SiOx–C presents high reversible capacity, remarkable cycle life and high rate capability due to the high dispersion of nano-sized SiOx and conductive 3D carbon nanonetwork.

A low-cost and scalable strategy for the synthesis of the hierarchically porous and hydrophobic adsorbent for volatile organic compounds removal remains a challenge. In this work, a novel silicon/silicon oxide (Si/SiO x ) composite with hierarchical porosity and hydrophobicity was successfully designed from natural palygorskite via a one-pot synthesis strategy, which could be promising in the scalable production due to the cost-effective precursor and simple procedure. The insufficient reduction of palygorskite during the molten salt-assisted magnesiothermic reaction led to the formation of hydrophobic crystalline silicon and the maintenance of amorphous silica framework. The results showed that the Si/SiO x composite possessed the large specific surface area (~307 m 2 g −1 ) and hierarchically porous structure ( i.e. , micro-, meso-, and macropores). As adsorbent for benzene molecules, the Si/SiO x composite exhibited much better static and dynamic benzene adsorption capacities (585.7 and 316.2 mg g −1 , respectively) than raw palygorskite (265.7 and 166.1 mg g −1 , respectively). The excellent benzene adsorption performance of the Si/SiO x composite could be attributed to the large specific area (offering ample adsorption sites) and hierarchical porosity (facilitating the diffusion/mass transfer process). Moreover, the Si/SiO x composite maintained a high adsorption capactiy for benzene under humidity condition (238.7 mg g −1 , with the adsorption efficiency of 76%). Our work provided a universal one-pot method from clay mineral to the hierarchically porous and hydrophobic Si/SiO x composite, and this novel product could be used as an attractive adsorbent for the practical removal of volatile organic compounds.

Silicon oxide (SiOx) is recognized as a promising anode material for high-energy lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) due to its abundant reserves, facile synthesis, and high theoretical capacity. However, the practical use of the SiOx anode is severely hampered due to its poor cycling stability caused by a large volume change upon lithiation/delithiation. The waterborne poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) binder has been regarded as one of the most promising binders for SiOx-based anodes. In this work, a new concept is developed using locally an enriched PAA binder to enhance the structural stability of the electrode, the adhesion force between the electrode and the current collector, and the dispersion of carbon black within the electrode. By simply replacing water with an organic solvent (for example, N,N′-dimethyl formamide, DMF), the PAA binder is enriched locally in DMF because the PAA chains collapse in the DMF solution, leading to an increased functional group density. Improved electrochemical performance in terms of capacity retention and rate capacity is achieved by the locally enriched PAA binder in both half-cell and full-cell configurations. In detail, the SiOx/PAA-DMF‖Li half-cell exhibits a high reversible capacity with enhanced long-term cycling stability (1447 mA h g−1 at 0.5 C for over 100 cycles with 84.5% capacity retention). The LiFePO4‖SiOx full-cell test shows that the capacity retention is increased from 62.4% to 74.4% after 200 cycles at 0.5 C. This work establishes a new concept practically feasible for applications of the alloying-based lithium-ion battery anode.

Flexible solid-state batteries (FSSBs) are indispensable energy storage devices to fulfil the energy and safety requirements for future flexible applications. The bottlenecks of FSSBs are how to realize high energy density with competent ionic conductivity for room-temperature (RT) flexible applications. Here, the first fabrication of RT FSSB with high energy density is reported, which is realized by in situ integration of a 20-µm-thick hybrid polymer/ceramic/ionic liquid solid-state electrolyte (SSE) between the high energy combination of anode/cathode electrodes. The in situ electrode/electrolyte interfacial integration strategy provides an ultrathin SSE layer, ultralow resistance and superior flexibility, and the SSE guarantees both high ionic conductivity and good compatibility with high-energy cathode LiNi 0.8 Co 0.1 Mn 0.1 O 2 (NCM811). The fabricated Li 4 Ti 5 O 12 /NCM811 FSSB delivers super-low resistance approaching conventional liquid cells and excellent cycling stability up to 600 cycles at RT. The extension of anode to SiO x @graphite leads to a high theoretical energy density of 489.6 Wh kg −1 at material’s level, times higher than current options. In addition, the RT FSSB shows great flexibility, indicating a high performance application in future flexible electronics.

Nano- and micro-sized silicon and its low valence oxide show as one of the potentially promising anode materials for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) with high energy density . Even so, the high price of nanosized silicon and poor tolerance against mechanical stress of microsized silicon limit their practical applications as silicon anode materials. Herein, using diatomite, a naturally occurring siliceous sedimentary rock , as a precursor, a series of porous Si/SiO x micronplates are synthesized through magnesiothermic reduction followed by an acid etching process. When evaluated as LIB anodes, the Si/SiO x micronplates exhibit significant improvement of cycle stability compared to commercial silicon anodes. Moreover, etched Si/SiO x micronplates achieve a highly reversible lithium storage capacity of 980 mAh g -1 at 100 mA g -1 after 100 cycles, which is over two times as high as unetched Si/SiO x anodes. The boosting lithium storage performance is attributed to the rational regulations of composition, morphology, and crystalline structures of microsized Si/SiO x , which demonstrate that the as-prepared Si/SiO x micronplates should be a series of promising anode materials for high energy density LIBs.

Graphical Mesoporous Si/SiO x @NC nanospheres : A core–shell structured Si/SiO x @NC composite with distinct nanostructure was controllably synthesized through metal–organic framework (MOF)-derived magnesio-thermic reduction. Owing to the core–shell structure, the final product with the optimized nanostructure exhibits enhanced electrochemical performance in terms of reversible capacity and long-term cycling stability, which may be attributed to the many beneficial factors. Silicon (Si)-based anode materials with suitable engineered nanostructures generally have improved lithium storage capabilities, which provide great promise for the electrochemical performance in lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). Herein, a metal–organic framework (MOF)-derived unique core–shell Si/SiO x @NC structure has been synthesized by a facile magnesio-thermic reduction, in which the Si and SiO x matrix were encapsulated by nitrogen (N)-doped carbon. Importantly, the well-designed nanostructure has enough space to accommodate the volume change during the lithiation/delithiation process. The conductive porous N-doped carbon was optimized through direct carbonization and reduction of SiO 2 into Si/SiO x simultaneously. Benefiting from the core–shell structure, the synthesized product exhibited enhanced electrochemical performance as an anode material in LIBs. Particularly, the Si/SiO x @NC-650 anode showed the best reversible capacities up to 724 and 702 mAh g −1 even after 100 cycles. The excellent cycling stability of Si/SiO x @NC-650 may be attributed to the core–shell structure as well as the synergistic effect between the Si/SiO x and MOF-derived N-doped carbon.

Graphical We fabricated a novel single-phase nanotube structure with uniform distribution of nanoscale SiOx units and amorphous carbon matrix. The hollow nanotube and homogeneously distributed ultrafine SiOx units greatly alleviate volume changes. When employed as an anode of LIBs, the SiOx/C NTs electrode displays excellent long−Cycle stability and rate capability. SiOx is an attractive anode material for lithium-ion batteries due to its considerable capacity. However, its obvious volume expansion and low conductivity result in poor electrochemical performance. Herein, a novel single-phase nanotube structure with uniform distribution of nanoscale SiOx units and amorphous carbon matrix was fabricated. The hollow nanotube and homogeneously distributed ultrafine SiOx units greatly alleviate volume changes. The amorphous carbon facilitates electron transport throughout the network and offers a buffer to further reduce the volume expansion of SiOx. Benefiting from this unique structure, as-prepared single-phase SiOx/C NTs demonstrate excellent durability and rate capability. Specifically, it delivers a high reversible specific capacity (713 mAh g −1 at 0.1 A g −1 after 200 cycles); negligible capacity decay is confirmed after 500 cycles at high density current (544 mAh g −1 at 1 A g −1 after 500 cycles).

Silicon suboxide (SiO X ) is a promising anode material for lithium ion battery (LIB). However, oxygen-dependent SiO X poses a great impact on its cycling stability, which is difficult to controllably prepare. Additionally, the aggregation of nano-scale SiO X restricts the diffusion of lithium ion and structural stability during cycles. Herein, we realize the controllable preparation of porous SiO X /C sheets with various oxygen content and graphite-like carbon as anode materials of LIB . It is found that high oxygen content and a 3-dimensional network in SiO X /C can ensure high structural stability during cycles. As-prepared SiO X facilitates the growth of graphite-like carbon with high defect density, improving their electron and ion conductivity. As-prepared SiO X @C sheets deliver superior reversible capacity, cycling stability and rate performance (the second discharging capacity of 717.4 mAh g −1 at 100 mA g −1 with high initial Coulombic Efficiency of 64.08% is obtained; its capacity retention is as high as 100.44% against the second discharging capacity after 200 cycles; at a high current density of 2000 mA g −1 , its reversible capacity still remains 389 mAh g −1 ). This work provides a novel and simple approach to controllably prepare disproportionated SiO X @C sheets with the 3-dimensional network as ultrastable SiO x -based anode materials of LIB for practical application.

In the current situation where the practical application of silicon anode materials encounters great challenges, silicon oxide (SiO x , 0 ≤ x ≤ 2) has attracted the attention of researchers due to its relatively small volume expansion, stable cycling performance, and low cost, which is possible to realize commercial applications earlier than silicon anode. However, it remains a challenge to prepare SiO x materials with long-term stable cycling performance and high Coulombic efficiency using low-cost methods. In this work, SiO x anode material with high Coulombic efficiency and good long-term cycling stability was prepared at a low cost by hydrolysis of siloxane and in situ polymerization of phenolic resin. The hydrolysis of siloxane was further regulated by different silane coupling agents to regulate the size and microstructure of prepared SiO x materials, which displayed the substantially improved electrochemical performance. The excellent electrochemical performance of SiO x prepared by regulated hydrolysis of siloxane with silane coupling agents is attributed to the effect of silane coupling agent on size and microstructure of SiO x , revealing that the strategy of modulating the hydrolysis of siloxane by silane coupling agent is a potential method to prepare high-performance SiO x materials.

Designing electrodes with fast reaction kinetics, robust structural stability, and a durable electrode–electrolyte interface remains a critical challenge for advancing high-energy lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). Here, we demonstrate a facile laser-processing strategy to fabricate fluorinated electrodes, including SiO x and graphite. As a representative example, fluorine-doped graphene-encapsulated SiO x (SiO x /G–F) electrodes deliver a high reversible capacity of 616.8 mAh g −1 over 800 cycles at 1 A g −1 , along with excellent rate capability of 469.4 mAh g −1 at 5 A g −1 . Furthermore, their outstanding performance is further confirmed in full-cell configurations paired with LiNi 0.8 Co 0.1 Mn 0.1 O 2 cathodes, showing 70.2% capacity retention over 200 cycles. Detailed characterization reveals that the fluorine-doped carbon shell enhances charge transfer, accelerates lithium-ion diffusion, and facilitates the formation of a LiF-enriched solid electrolyte interphase (SEI). The stable SEI alleviates mechanical stress, mitigates electrode pulverization, and ensures interfacial stability during cycling. Overall, this simple, scalable, and practical strategy offers valuable insights for designing high-performance electrodes in next-generation high-energy LIBs. Graphical Here, we propose a scalable and efficient laser-induced thermal shock strategy to produce fluorinated SiO x /G–F and graphite electrodes. The SiO x /G–F anode features a fluorine-doped carbon interface that accelerates reaction kinetics and promotes the formation of a LiF-rich SEI, thereby relieving mechanical stress, mitigating pulverization, and stabilizing the electrode interface during cycling.
