Multimode-responsive luminescence materials play pivotal roles both in understanding the fundamental photophysical processes and fabricating smart devices. To obtain inorganic phosphor-based multi-responsive materials, however, triple or even quadruple doping ions or a series of hosts with different compositions are frequently used. In this work, a single-rare-earth-doped phosphor, Sr 2 YGaO 5 :Sm 3+ , with multi-responsive luminescence is first reported. This single-Sm 3+ -doped phosphor exhibits unique excitation-wavelength, ultraviolet/X-ray charging, and thermal stimulated luminescence-color-changeable features. Further studies confirm that the multimode-responsive luminescence of Sr 2 YGaO 5 :Sm 3+ is attributed to superior optical integration of the host (Sr 2 YGaO 5 ) and dopant (Sm 3+ ) emissions under specific stimulation conditions. Importantly, this study provides a novel concept for designing inorganic phosphor-based multifunctional optical materials, which would be conducive to the development of smart platforms.

Zircon (ZrSiO 4 ), due to its excellent thermal stability and chemical durability, is an efficient solidification matrix for high-level radioactive waste (HLW). However, the traditional solid-state method has problems such as high synthesis temperature (>1600 °C), long reaction time (>24 h), and insufficient product purity. Thus in this study, the synthesis conditions were optimized to 1400 °C/6 h by adding 10 wt% MgO as a mineralizer, significantly reducing the reaction temperature and time. The mechanism of MgO as a mineralizer was investigated. XRD revealed that MgO promoted the transformation of m-ZrO 2 (monoclinic zirconia) to t-ZrO 2 (tetragonal zirconia) and reacted with SiO 2 to form MgSiO 3 , jointly lowering the reaction temperature and time. Based on this, the lattice substitution strategy was used to immobilize Sm 3+ (simulating trivalent actinides) in Sm x Zr (1-x) SiO 4 (0 < x < 0.5) solid solutions. XRD indicated that when x ≤ 0.45, a stable coexistence phase of Sm x Zr (1-x) SiO 4 (zircon structure) and m-ZrO 2 (monoclinic zirconia) was formed, and Sm 3+ successfully replaced Zr 4+ . When x > 0.45, the structure collapsed, with peak broadening and the appearance of a second phase. The maximum component (x = 0.45) was combined with borosilicate glass to prepare glass-ceramic solidification bodies. In the 90 °C static leaching test, the 28-day normalized leaching rate of Sm 3+ ( LR Sm ) was ∼10 −6 g m −2 d −1 . This strategy provides a new solution for the long-term immobilization of fission element.

Persistent luminescence (PersL) and mechanoluminescence (ML) are two interesting optical phenomena, which are initiated by trapped charge carriers in some materials upon applying heat or force stimulations. Therefore, it is meaningful to jointly investigate PersL and ML in a single material to better understand the correlation between them. Herein, we focused on Sm3+-doped YPO4 because it can emit both PersL and ML. On the one hand, we demonstrated that after being charged by X-ray, YPO4:Sm3+ emitted orange PersL for over one hundred minutes, which can be attributed to the 4G5/2 → 6H7/2 transition of Sm3+. During the PersL stage, Sm3+ ions consistently served as luminescent centers. Using thermoluminescence measurements, we confirmed a continuous distribution of traps in YPO4:Sm3+, with trap depths ranging from 0.59 to 0.81 eV. On the other hand, during the PersL process, we observed a significant enhancement in YPO4:Sm3+ upon receiving an external force stimulation. It suggested that in addition to heat, external force stimulation enabled the release of the same trapped charge carriers in YPO4:Sm3+, resulting in ML. Additionally, we confirmed that the ML of YPO4:Sm3+ belonged to the trap-controlled type, with both piezoelectric and triboelectric effects playing pivotal roles in the force-activated luminescence process. Our work offers insights into the coupling between PersL and ML, laying the foundation for the rational design of future multi-stimuli responsive luminescent materials.

Due to their potential applications in optical information storage, optical switches, and related fields, transparent photochromic materials have attracted significant attention. However, most current studies on rare-earth-doped K 0.5 Na 0.5 NbO 3 (KNN)ceramics focus on macroscopic photochromic phenomena, while in-depth investigations into the underlying microscopic mechanisms remain limited. This study fabricated Sm 3+ -doped K 0.5 Na 0.5 NbO 3 transparent ceramics using a high-temperature solid-state method at various sintering temperatures and systematically investigated the influence of sintering temperature on their microstructure, optical transmittance, and photochromic behavior to gain deeper insight into the essence of photochromism. Compared to previous studies that primarily addressed luminescence or visual color changes, this study combines X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), photoluminescence (PL) lifetime analysis, and thermal cycling to elucidate the formation and role of vacancy-trapped electron centers. The results showed that the ceramics exhibited maximum transmittance values of 44 % and 60 % at 597 and 900 nm, respectively, at a sintering temperature of 1185 °C. A transmittance modulation ratio of 23 % at 597 nm was achieved at 1170 °C. Alternating light and thermal stimuli enabled reversible modulation of luminescence intensity and transmittance, demonstrating excellent stability and repeatability. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy revealed that photo-induced color centers formed by vacancy-trapped electrons reduced the transmittance and emission intensity, elucidating the intrinsic photochromic mechanism. Therefore, these ceramics showed strong potential for applications in optical data storage and nondestructive optical readout.

There is a tremendous demand for noncontact temperature sensing technologies due to their fast response and accurate testing. In this work, Ba 3 LaNb 3 O 12 :Sm 3+ /g-C 3 N 4 mixed phosphors with various compositional ratios were synthesized via a high-temperature solid-state reaction. Over the temperature range of 313–573 K, the luminescent intensity of g-C 3 N 4 exhibited a decreasing trend. In contrast, the luminescent intensity of Ba 3 LaNb 3 O 12 :Sm 3+ demonstrates an antithermal quenching phenomenon due to the high structural rigidity of Ba 3 LaNb 3 O 12 . To achieve high temperature sensitivity, Ba 3 LaNb 3 O 12 :0.08Sm 3+ and g-C 3 N 4 were mixed at an optimal 15:1 ratio, leveraging their contrasting thermal responses. The composite exhibits tunable emission, with its color shifting from cyan to orange as the temperature rises. This property enables a dual-mode temperature sensing based on fluorescence intensity ratio (FIR) and Commission Internationale de l'Éclairage (CIE) chromaticity coordinates, achieving maximum relative sensitivities of 1.63% K −1 at 313 K and 0.34% K −1 at 573 K, respectively. Besides, the repeatability of the optimal mixed phosphors reaches 98% across variable temperature cycles. These results indicate that the Ba 3 LaNb 3 O 12 :Sm 3+ /g-C 3 N 4 mixed phosphor exhibits high sensitivity and exceptional repeatability, demonstrating its potential for application in self-calibrated optical thermometry.

Dy 3+ , Sm 3+ co-doped Y 2 SiWO 8 (YSiWO) phosphors were synthesized through the sol–gel method. The crystal structure, morphology, photoluminescence spectra and thermal stability of the phosphors have been thoroughly studied. The Dy 3+ dopant concentration is fixed at 2 mol% in co-doped samples. It is noticeable that energy transfer from Dy 3+ to Sm 3+ is apparent under the 365 nm excitation. The energy transfer mechanisms of Dy 3+ → Dy 3+ (YSiWO: Dy 3+ ), Sm 3+ → Sm 3+ (YSiWO: Sm 3+ ) and Dy 3+ → Sm 3+ (YSiWO: Dy 3+ , Sm 3+ ) are extensively studied, respectively. Upon the 365 nm excitation, the co-doped phosphor shows the color-tunable emission varying from blue-green to white via adjusting Sm 3+ concentration. The YSiWO: 0.02Dy 3+ , 0.06Sm 3+ phosphor exhibits an ideal warm white emission with CIE coordinates of (0.362, 0.323) and CCT of 4129 K. This phosphor is also found to possess the remarkable thermal stability. In summary, the YSiWO: Dy 3+ , Sm 3+ white-emitting phosphor may have potential use in w-LEDs.

Double-perovskite Ca 2 YSbO 6 phosphors doped with Dy 3+ /Sm 3+ were prepared by high-temperature solid-state reaction method. The phase structure of the samples was characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), and the microscopic morphology, microstructure, luminescence characteristics and energy transfer process of the Ca 2 YSbO 6 phosphor samples were systematically studied by means of scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), fluorescence spectroscopy and lifetime testing. Dy 3+ /Sm 3+ have been incorporated into the Ca 2 YSbO 6 (CYSO) crystal lattice, exhibiting a homogeneous distribution of elements throughout the structure. Ca 2 YSbO 6 : Sm 3+ , Dy 3+ phosphors exhibit intense red and yellow emission peaks at 601 nm and 565 nm, respectively. The luminescent performance of Ca 2 YSbO 6 : Sm 3+ , Dy 3+ phosphors is the highest when the doping concentrations of Sm 3+ and Dy 3+ are 0.03 mol and 0.04 mol. By adjusting the Dy 3+ concentration and utilizing its energy transfer to Sm 3+ , tunable emission from orange-red to yellow was achieved for the CYSO: 0.03 mol Sm 3+ , y mol Dy 3+ phosphor. Under 407 nm excitation, the Internal Quantum Efficiency (IQE) of the phosphor is 27.75%. Additionally, Variable-temperature emission spectroscopy further confirmed that the co-doped phosphor has obvious anti-thermal quenching properties. It still has 54.46% of the original luminous intensity at 423 K. The white light-emitting diodes (W-LEDs) demon-strated a high color rendering index (Ra) of 88 and a suitable correlated color temperature (CCT) of 5994 K. These results show that the proposed phosphor has great application potential in supplementing the red-light components of LED lighting.

Optical thermometry based on rare-earth-activated phosphors has attracted increasing interest for non-contact temperature sensing applications. Herein, a Sm 3+ -activated BaLaLiTeO 6 (BLLT:Sm 3+ ) phosphor is developed and systematically investigated as a multimode optical thermometric material. Benefiting from the thermally coupled 4 G 5/2 → 6 H J transitions of Sm 3+ ions, multiple fluorescence intensity ratio (FIR) thermometric modes are established, all exhibiting high fitting reliability and favorable sensitivities. Notably, a maximum relative sensitivity ( S R ) of 3.14% K −1 is achieved, demonstrating the effectiveness and flexibility of the multimode thermometric strategy. The optimal Sm 3+ concentration is determined to be 4 mol%, with concentration quenching governed by electric dipole–dipole interaction. In addition to its excellent thermometric performance, the phosphor exhibits intense orange-red emission with a high photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) of 39.02%, providing strong emission signals that are advantageous for reliable optical temperature sensing. These results highlight BLLT:Sm 3+ as a promising thermally robust phosphor for advanced optical temperature sensing.

Near-infrared long-afterglow nanomaterials hold significant potential in nanomedicine platforms, including targeted drug delivery, precise imaging, and immunotherapy. Improving the particle size distribution and reducing the nanoparticle size to enhance biocompatibility are crucial. Due to the small size effect, reducing the nanoparticle size and improving uniformity typically lead to a decrease in afterglow performance. In this study, near-infrared long-afterglow nanoparticles, Zn 2 Ga 2.98 − x Ge 0.75 O 8 :Cr 3+ 0.02 ,Sm 3+ x ( x = 0, 0.02, 0.04, 0.06, 0.08) (ZGGO:Cr 3+ ,Sm 3+ x ), were synthesized using the Sm 3+ ion doping strategy at varying doping concentrations. This work reveals how cation substitution simultaneously affects the nanoparticle size and enhances the near-infrared long-afterglow luminescent performance. The Sm 3+ ion doping overcame the increased surface defects caused by the reduced particle size, while simultaneously improving the number of effective luminescent centers by modifying the crystal field environment around the luminescent center. The afterglow intensity and duration of ZGGO:Cr 3+ ,Sm 3+ x nanoparticles were significantly enhanced. The study shows that Sm 3+ ion doping effectively reduces the size of ZGGO:Cr 3+ ,Sm 3+ x nanoparticles while extending the near-infrared long-afterglow time by modulating trap depth, the interaction between traps and excited-state energy levels, and the competition between thermal activation and tunneling processes.

In this work, we synthesize a series of Ba 2 La 2 ZnW 2 O 12 :Sm 3+ (BLZWO:Sm 3+ ) phosphors and research their crystal structure, morphology, and luminescence properties. The emission spectrum of host BLZWO with excitation at 370 nm can be observed in the range of 390–800 nm because of the W 6+ - O 2− transition in [WO 6 ] group. BLZWO:Sm 3+ phosphor with excitation at 370 nm emits yellow light with the emission spectrum in the range of 390–800 nm due to the W 6+ - O 2− transition in [WO 6 ] group and the 4 G 5/2 → 6 H 9/2 transition of Sm 3+ ion. BLZWO:Sm 3+ phosphor excited at 408 nm emits red light and its emission spectrum in the range of 550–740 nm includes four narrow emission bands (550–580 nm, 580–625 nm, 625–685 nm, and 685–740 nm), which are derived from the 4 G 5/2 → 6 H 5/2 , 6 H 7/2 , 6 H 9/2 , and 6 H 11/2 transitions of Sm 3+ ion, respectively. We investigate the concentration-dependent excitation and emission spectra of samples. The lifetime of BLZWO:Sm 3+ phosphor under excitation 408 nm decreases from 799.6 μs to 686.7 μs with increasing Sm 3+ doping concentration. The energy transfer and luminous mechanism in BLZWO:Sm 3+ phosphor are explained.

Materials integrating photochromism (PC), dynamic photoluminescence (PL) and persistent luminescence (PersL) exhibit significant potential for advanced anticounterfeiting and high-security information encryption through their multi-modal optical responses to external stimuli. Nevertheless, achieving the synergistic integration of these optical phenomena within a single material remains a significant challenge due to complex defect-related energy transfer processes. In this work, we developed a series of MgGa 2 O 4 :Sm 3+ (MGO:Sm) phosphors exhibiting reversible white-to-gray PC under 254 nm UV irradiation, accompanied by time-dependent dynamic PL color variations from dark red to light pink (or blue). Furthermore, the phosphors exhibit dynamic PersL, with emission color shifting from light pink (or blue) to red over time. Remarkably, Sm³ + doping not only enhances PC response but also enables color-tunable dynamic PL and PersL. Further analysis reveals that these multi-modal optical properties originate from complex interactions between traps, defect levels, and Sm³ + ions. The superior performance of MGO:Sm phosphors demonstrates their promising utility in advanced anticounterfeiting and encryption technologies.

Achieving high color rendering index (CRI) in white LEDs requires the use of red-emitting phosphors. With the expanding application range of high-power LEDs and laser diodes, the demand for thermal stability of phosphor has become increasingly stringent. In this study, a series of novel red-emitting phosphors Sr 2- x LiAlO 4 : x Sm 3+ ( x = 0.01–0.18) were synthesized by a solid-state reaction. Under 407 nm excitation, this phosphor displays a prominent red emission (608 nm) characterized by the dominant 4 G → 6 H transition of Sm 3+ . The phosphor maintains 98.5% of its luminescence intensity at 200°C compared to room temperature (30°C). This indicates that Sr 1.91 LiAlO 4 : 0.09Sm 3+ phosphor has excellent thermal stability, which is attributed to the high rigidity of its crystal structure. A white LED was fabricated by coating a 365 nm near-UV chip with a blend of phosphors: the red Sr 1.91 LiAlO 4 : 0.09Sm 3+ , a yellow-green (Sr, Ba) 2 SiO 4 : Eu 2+ and a blue BaMgAl 10 O 17 : Eu 2+ phosphors. The device emits white light with a high color rendering index (CRI) of 94.4 and a correlated color temperature (CCT) of 5625 K. The results demonstrate the promising application potential of the Sr 1.91 LiAlO 4 : 0.09Sm 3+ red phosphor in white LED applications.
