Biodegradable chitosan (CS) films can meet the demand for sustainable development. However, the performance of pure CS membrane still exists a particular gap compared with the traditional film. Inorganic nanomaterials with the controllable release are added to improve its physical and chemical properties. Herein, a series of CS/phosphate-stabilized amorphous calcium carbonate (CS/ACCP) and CS/sodium alginate/ACCP (CS/Alginate/ACCP) composite films were prepared by the flow method. The effects of ACCP and Alginate/ACCP nanoparticles on the physical and chemical properties of the composite membrane were investigated. The results showed that the composite nanoparticles could significantly improve CS film's compactness, hydrophobicity , and mechanical properties and enhance its ultraviolet (UV) blocking ability, water resistance, and water vapor blocking ability. When the number of nanoparticles was 8%, the mechanical properties of the CS composite membrane reached optimum value, and the comprehensive performance was better. In addition, the controlled-release properties of CS composite membranes were also studied, and the antioxidant, antibacterial, biocompatibility, and fresh-keeping effects of the composite membranes were explored. The results indicated that the CS composite membranes had not only excellent bacteriostatic (72%) properties ( Escherichia coli ) but also presented well fruit preservation (15 days) properties (sugar orange). In particular, the controlled release range of CS composite membrane at 12 h was between 30% and 90%, which provided a theoretical basis for its use as an edible membrane. Therefore, based on ACCP and Alginate/ACCP nanoparticles, CS composite membranes with more excellent application value in the biological field were prepared through further optimization design.

The ε-polylysine (ε-PL) is a food-grade antimicrobial substance. The cationic ε-PL molecules may interact with anionic components of food matrix causing turbidity, sedimentation, and hampering the antimicrobial activity. Herein, sodium alginate (SA) was used as wall material to encapsulate ε-PL, thereby to synthesize ε-PL-SA nanoparticles (ε-PL-SA-NPs). Monosaccharide composition and molecular weight of SA were characterized. The synthetic scheme is optimized and physicochemical characteristics and antimicrobial potential was investigated. Findings indicate that SA primarily consisted of mannuronic acid (95.25 %), weight average molecular weight (Mw) of SA was 176.464 kDa, and the molecular configuration of SA was irregular line clusters. The encapsulation efficiency (EE) of ε-PL in ε-PL-SA-NPs made under optimum strategy (at pH 6.0, mass ratio of ε-PL to SA is 0.14, and SA concentration is 6 mg/mL) is about 99.74 %. The particle size of ε-PL-SA-NPs is ∼541.86 nm. The SEM image showed that the ε-PL-SA-NPs had a nearly spherical morphology. Zeta-potential and FTIR data reveal the interaction between ε-PL and SA was electrostatic and the hydrogen bonding. Agar diffusion assay exhibit that ε-PL-SA-NPs had antimicrobial activity against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus . The salmon preservation experiments reveal sustained antimicrobial efficacy of ε-PL-SA-NPs.

With the development of technology, adjuvant immunotherapy has become a promising strategy for prevention of postoperative tumor regression and metastasis by stimulating the host immune response. However, the therapeutic effects are still unsatisfactory due to the lack of synergy between different methods. In this study, an efficient synergistic immunotherapy system based on injectable sodium alginate hydrogels was designed to inhibit in situ recurrence and metastasis at the same time. On the one hand, an injectable sodium alginate (SA) hydrogel microsystem loaded with toll-like receptor (TLR) agonists (CpG ODNs) was synthesized for inhibiting in situ recurrence, and then carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) probe was also added to detect CEA based on fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) technology to monitor the occurrence and development of tumor recurrence. On the other hand, an anti-programmed cell death 1 ligand 1 antibody (anti-PD-L1)-modified SA nanogel loaded with indocyanine green (ICG@SA-anti-PD-L1 nanogel) was prepared for diagnosing and inhibiting lung metastasis by assisting orthotopic tumor therapy. In vitro and in vivo results demonstrated that this SA micro/nanosystem could monitor and inhibit postoperative recurrence and metastasis. We hope that this micro/nano-synergistic system will become an effective strategy for postoperative adjuvant immunotherapy.

In recent years, the cellulose sponge has become an attractive material for bone tissue materials in tissue engineering. However, cellulose with hydroxyl groups shows weak apatite nucleation ability in simulated body fluid (SBF). In this study, cellulose/sodium alginate (SA) composite sponges were prepared via freeze-drying technique. The incorporation of SA in the cellulose matrix effectively increased the macroporous ability of composite scaffolds. Furthermore, the phosphate groups were grafted onto the surface of the composite sponges by esterification reaction in order to induce the formation of an apatite crystal. The morphology and structure were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectrometer, scanning electron microscope, X-ray diffraction and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The results showed that the deposition of apatite nanoparticles on the surface of phosphorylated composite sponges was very robust, and the spherical apatite nanoparticles were aggregated into rod-like apatite crystals. The Ca/P molar ratio of HA on the surface of the phosphorylated cellulose/SA composite sponge was 1.45. In addition, sponges with biocompatibility were demonstrated by CCK8 assay and Live/Dead fluorescence staining of L929 cells. The L929 cell activity of both cellulose/SA and phosphorylated cellulose/SA composite sponge extracts were higher than 80%. We draw a conclusion that the biocompatible mineralized phosphorylated cellulose/SA composite sponges show potential to be applied as a bone repair material.

Hepatic fibrosis (HF) is a challenging clinical problem. Both sodium alginate (SA) and oxymatrine (OM) can be used to treat HF; however, the influence of viscosity on the therapeutic efficacy of sodium alginate is currently unknown. This study used a CCl 4 -induced HF mouse model to screen the specifications and doses of SA and investigate its therapeutic effects on HF in combination with OM. Sodium alginate of different viscosities ameliorated HF in mice, with 232 mPa·s SA delivered at a dose of 100 mg/kg showing remarkable therapeutic effect, characterized by reduced aspartate transaminase/alanine transaminase levels, reduced expression of α-SMA, collagen I, and other related genes, and increased abundance of beneficial intestinal probiotics such as Lactococcus and Blautia . The combination treatment further improved other related indices and increased the abundance of Phascolarctobacterium and Oscillospiraceae. These results suggest that the oral administration of SA may improve HF via the “gut-liver axis” based on the gut microbiota and has potential clinical applications.

Prestressing strategies are widely adopted in the formation of biological structures to modify their mechanical property. Inspired from the prestress generation during the formation of biominerals , a nacre-inspired boron nitride (BN) nanosheets strengthened by prestressed sodium alginate (SA) matrix is fabricated. The BN/SA (BS) films are formed by freeze-casting and pressing, then immerse in ethanol (BS-E) or CaCl 2 solution (BS-Ca). Several megapascals contractile stress is generated in film that is attributed to the contraction and crosslink of SA chains. Subsequently, artificial bulk composites are fabricated by stacking of these prestressed films via hot-pressing. Benefit from the contractile stress, the orientations of BN nanosheets in BS-E and BS-Ca are improved, and the (0 0 2) interplanar spacing of BN nanosheets in BS-Ca bulk is slight expansion compared with BS. Finally, the flexural strength of BS-E bulk is enhanced from 145 MPa (BS) to 174 MPa when the loading direction is parallel to stacking.

Sodium alginate (SA) hydrogels crosslinked by calcium carbonate (CaCO 3 ) and gluconolactone (GDL) are prepared and characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectrometry. The morphologies of the gel are observed with scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The SA hydrogels are used as carriers of the anti-inflammatory drug ibuprofen (IBU). The effects of GDL content, pH value, and temperature on IBU release behavior are investigated and associated kinetic analysis is performed. The results show that the cumulative release of IBU shows a trend of increasing and then decreasing with increased GDL content. The maximum cumulative release is observed when the molar ratio of calcium ions (Ca 2+ ) in CaCO 3 to GDL is 0.6. The release behavior of IBU is observed to be influenced by pH levels, and it exhibits an optimal release trend at a pH value of 7.4. The impact of temperature on the release behavior of IBU is relatively insignificant compared to other factors. The Korsmeyer–Peppas release kinetic model is well fitted and suitable to explain the release behavior of IBU from the sodium alginate hydrogel.

Although hydrogel have attracted tremendous attention as antifouling material, it is still challenging to develop an antifouling hydrogel that combines superior mechanical properties with excellent antifouling effect. Here, a high-strength polyvinyl alcohol/sodium alginate double-network (DN) antibacterial and antifouling hydrogel was synthesized by introducing polyhexamethylene biguanide hydrochloride (PHMB) potent fungicide . The as-prepared hydrogel demonstrated high tensile strength (17.23 MPa), excellent anti-protein adhesion ability (0.09 %, anti-diatom adhesion rate), and outstanding antibacterial ability (100 % sterilization rate). The antifouling experiments have verified that DN-PHMB hydrogel remains non-attachment even after >6 months in the actual marine environment. These distinctive capabilities of DN-PHMB hydrogels hold promising candidate for marine antifouling materials.

Polyelectrolyte composite nanospheres are relatively new adsorbents which have attracted much attention for their efficient pollutant removal and reuse performance. A novel polyelectrolyte nanosphere with magnetic function (SA@AM) was synthesized via the electrostatic reaction between the polyanionic sodium alginate (SA) and the surface of a prepared terminal amino-based magnetic nanoparticles (AMs). SA@AM showed a size of 15–22 nm with 6.85 emu·g −1 of magnetization value, exhibiting a high adsorption capacity on Pb(II) ions representing a common heavy metal pollutant, with a maximum adsorption capacity of 105.8 mg g −1 . The Langmuir isotherm adsorption fits the adsorption curve, indicating uniform adsorption of Pb(II) on the SA@AM surfaces. Repeated adsorption desorption experiments showed that the removal ratio of Pb(II) by SA@AM was more than 76%, illustrating improved regeneration performance. These results provide useful information for the production of bio-based green magnetic nano scale adsorption materials for environmental remediation applications.

Due to the efficiency of ion movement is greatly affected by moisture environment, this article explores the effects of the changing the moisture content of the self-degraded ionic hydrogel-based electrolyte layer made of sodium alginate and chitosan on the improvement of the electromechanical properties of the soft ionic actuator. Specifically, sodium alginate-chitosan ionic hydrogel-based soft ionic actuator is fabricated and analyzed by voltammetry analysis, AC impedance, charge and discharge, electrical conductivity, displacement, and output force. Furthermore, the further application of this soft ionic actuator on bionic flytrap is developed and discussed. The results show that soft ionic actuator with the moisture content of 78.64% has the best electromechanical properties. Furthermore, soft ionic actuators with different moisture contents show different degrees of deflection due to the shift of the anions to the cathode under charged conditions. Therefore, it can be found that moisture content is beneficial to improve the electromechanical properties of ionic hydrogel-based soft artificial muscle.

In this study, sodium alginate (SA) nanofibres were obtained by electrospinning via the assistance of traditional poly(ethyl oxide) (PEO) and dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) with a high SA/PEO ratio of up to 94:6. However, surfactants with more or less toxicities were replaced by nontoxic and fluorescent carbon dots (CDs) to improve spinnability. Experimental details were conducted by fixing the ratio of SA/PEO to 90:10. Then, the electrospinning products of solutions with different compositions were observed with scanning electron microscopy. Properties such as conductivity, surface tension and rheology of the solutions were investigated to determine the key influencing factors. Moreover, since CDs have excellent fluorescence properties, the fluorescent properties of the nanofibre membrane that was blended with CDs were then collected. In addition, in vitro cytotoxicity assessment of the nanofibres were conducted to evaluate the toxicities and biocompatibility. Keywords:sodium alginate;electrospinning;nanofibres

A versatile ionic crosslink lithography (ICL) approach is reported to achieve geometry transitions of strong polyvinyl alcohol/sodium alginate (PVA/SA) hydrogels in a controllable and programmable manner. Specifically, localized PVA/SA and PVA/SA/Fe 3+ hydrogel domains of significantly different swellabilities (i.e., in-plane gradient) are created by patterning and selective ionic crosslinking of one single type of PVA/SA hydrogel. A simple two-step sequential pre- and free-swelling, or each alone, directs the patterned, inhomogeneous hydrogel to transform in various programmable and quasi-quantitative ways through local bulging and/or global buckling. All types of shape changing are reversible and repeatable due to the reversible nature of ionic coordination in the hydrogel networks. The flexibility and versatility of 3D printing is also demonstrated in creating through-thickness gradient in PVA and PVA/SA hydrogel assemblies with similar morphing capability. The ICL approach developed in this work may help shed some light on developing strong and shape morphing hydrogels as soft sensors and actuators and for potentially biomimetic transformations. The ICL approach may also be transferable to fabrication of many other types of hydrogel materials for similar applications.
