Enhanced photocatalytic activity of biosynthesized Au-Ag/TiO2 catalyst by removing excess anchored biomolecules

Jiang Xinde,Wang Zhenxi,Zhang Xiaohang,Jiang Guixian,Peng Yong,Xu Sheng,Cao Meng,Dai Xin,Liu Zuhan,Ma Jianye

A green bioreduction method was used to prepare highly efficient supported TiO 2 photocatalysts with bimetallic (Au-Ag) nanoparticles at room temperature using Cinnamomum camphora leaf extract as both the protective agent and reducing agent. The resulted Au-Ag/TiO 2 exhibits high photocatalytic activity toward the degradation of organic dyes. It was demonstrated that after some of the biomolecules were removed through ionic-liquid extraction and/or calcinations, the Au-Ag/TiO 2 photocatalyst exhibits significantly enhanced catalytic performance toward the degradation of methyl orange compared to the pristine untreated catalyst. As a result, 300 mL of 20 mg/mL methyl orange can be fully degraded in 30 min. These can be explained by the sufficient biomolecules could protect the nanoparticles stay in small size, but excess biomolecules played an unfavorable role in hindering the electron transportation during the catalytic reaction. The low-cost preparation, the high activity, together with the good stability and recyclability make this developed Au-Ag/TiO 2 a promising photocatalyst toward the degradation of wastewater.

Enhancement of the low-temperature activity of Ce/TiO2 catalyst by Sm modification for selective catalytic reduction of NOx with NH3

Peng Sun,Rui-tang Guo,Shu-ming Liu,Shu-xian Wang,Wei-guo Pan,Ming-yuan Li,Shuai-wei Liu,Jian Liu,Xiao Sun

CeSmOx mixed oxide catalysts supported on TiO 2 prepared by coprecipitation method were used for selective catalytic reduction of NOx with NH 3 . The results showed that the addition of Sm could effectively enhance the low-temperature SCR activity and SO 2 /H 2 O resistance of Ce/TiO 2 catalyst, and the appropriate mole ratio of Sm to Ce was 0.3. Characterization results indicated that the introduction of Sm could promote the formation of Ce 3+ and chemisorbed oxygen species on catalyst surface, which was favorable to the generation of NO 2 . Moreover, the doping of Sm could also promote the adsorption of NH 3 and NOx species on Ce/TiO 2 catalyst. The results of in situ DRIFT study revealed that the NH 3 -SCR reaction over CeSm/TiO 2 -0.3 catalyst was mainly controlled by the Langmuir−Hinshelwood mechanism in the low temperature range (<200   °C). Thereafter, the promoted NO oxidation and the enhanced NH 3 adsorption should play a major role for the excellent low-temperature SCR performance of CeSm/TiO 2 -0.3 catalyst.

DRIFT Study of CuO–CeO2–TiO2 Mixed Oxides for NOx Reduction with NH3 at Low Temperatures

Lei Chen,Zhichun Si,Xiaodong Wu,Duan Weng

A CuO–CeO2–TiO2 catalyst for selective catalytic reduction of NOx with NH3 (NH3-SCR) at low temperatures was prepared by a sol–gel method and characterized by X-ray diffraction, Brunner–Emmett–Teller surface area, ultraviolet–visible spectroscopy, H2 temperature-programmed reduction, scanning electron microscopy and in situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy (in situ DRIFTS). The CuO–CeO2–TiO2 ternary oxide catalyst shows excellent NH3-SCR activity in a low-temperature range of 150–250 °C. Lewis acid sites generated from Cu2+ are the main active sites for ammonia activation at low temperature, which is crucial for low temperature NH3-SCR activity. The introduction of ceria results in increased reducibility of CuO species and strong interactions between CuO particles with the matrix. The interactions between copper, cerium and titanium oxides lead to high dispersion of metal oxides with increased active oxygen and enhanced catalyst acidity. Homogeneously mixed metal oxides facilitate the “fast SCR” reaction among Cu2+–NO, nitrate (coordinated on cerium sites) and ammonia (on titanium sites) on the CuO–CeO2–TiO2 catalyst at low temperatures.

Unveiling the promoting effect of water on formaldehyde oxidation over Pt/TiO2: insights from H/D kinetic isotope effect, in situ FTIR, and DFT

Lu Wang,Siyuan Zhang,Jukun Xiong,Meicheng Wen

Formaldehyde (HCHO), a prevalent indoor volatile organic compound, poses significant health risks to humans even at very low concentrations. As a result, its efficient degradation at room temperature is of utmost importance. However, the detailed mechanism for catalytic oxidation of formaldehyde remains unclear, particularly regarding the role of water vapor, which has been subject to considerable debate. In this study, we synthesized Pt-supported TiO2 glass fiber catalysts (Pt/TiO2 GF) via NaBH4 reduction to investigate the reaction pathways and clarify the influence of water vapor on the oxidation process. The reaction mechanism and intermediates were systematically studied at room temperature using in situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy (DRIFTS), kinetic isotope effect (KIE) analysis, and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Results revealed a clear reaction pathway of HCHO → DOM → HCOO− → CO2, with formate C–H bond cleavage (HCOO−* + O* → CO2 + OH*) identified as the rate-determining step. Both experimental KIE results and theoretical calculations confirmed that water vapor substantially reduces the activation barrier for this step, significantly promoting formate decomposition and subsequent CO2 formation. This work provides critical insights into the role of water in enhancing formaldehyde oxidation and offers theoretical support for developing efficient catalysts suitable for humid environments.

H2-Free Deoxygenation and Cracking of Long-Chain Trimethylolpropane Trioleate with FeNi/TiO2 Bimetallic Catalysts for Biojet Fuel Production

Jianxin Zhang,Brandon Han Hoe Goh,Cheng Tung Chong,William Woei Fong Chong,Jo-Han Ng

Development of efficient catalysts is important to promote the deoxygenation of oils and fats for the production of biofuels. In this study, several bimetallic catalysts including Fe, Co, and Ni were impregnated onto TiO2 and evaluated for their efficacy in deoxygenating long-chain trimethylolpropane trioleate (TMPTO) under a N2 atmosphere. FeNi/TiO2 exhibited the highest selectivity of 65.7% for C8–C16 hydrocarbons with a relatively good 85.3% deoxygenation performance. The catalyst maintained a stable deoxygenation efficiency of around 70.6% and a selectivity of 46.7% after four runs. Impregnation of transition metals leads to a decrease in the specific surface area, while the additional active sites facilitate deoxygenation and cleavage reactions. The acidic sites provided by Fe and TiO2 supports and the electronic modulation of Ni enhance the ability of the catalyst to crack C–O bonds. The results demonstrate the potential of using transition metals under a N2 environment to convert super long-chain oxygenated fatty acids into jet-fuel-range hydrocarbons.

Unlocking low-temperature and anti-SO2 poisoning performance of bimetallic PdV/TiO2 catalyst for chlorobenzene/NOx catalytic removal by antimony modification design

Guobo Li,Shipeng Ding,Xueyan Hou,Kai Shen,Shule Zhang,Yaping Zhang

Controlling chlorobenzene (CB) and NO x emissions via catalytic oxidation and selective catalytic reduction necessitates high redox performance catalysts, and construction of active centers with multiple adsorption centers towards reactants is prerequisite for developing such catalysts. Herein, the electronic structure and active centers of the PdV/TiO 2 bimetallic catalyst were modulated by Sb modification. The neighboring antimony (Sb) promoted the charge transfer between V and Pd centers, and suppressed the adsorption of SO 2 on active sites, thus accelerating CB/NO x conversion and significantly avoiding the deposition of sulfur species on the active centers, especially the Pd species. The detailed plausible CB/NO x catalytic removal pathway (CB free  → CB ads  → C 6 H 5 ads  + Cl ads  + O species (O latt and O ads ) → C x H y O z  + Cl ads  + Brønsted → CO 2  + H 2 O + HCl on SbPdV/TiO 2 catalyst surface was further established. This research provided a strategy for the development of improved CB catalytic oxidation + selective catalytic reduction (CBCO + SCR) catalysts by tuning the electronic structure of active centers.

Aqueous Oxidation of 1,5-Pentanediol to Glutaric Acid Over Pt-Based Catalysts in a Base-Free Medium

Fan Li,Wenhan Li,Quanxing Zhang,Lianlian Song,Dongpei Zhang,Yuanyuan Ren,Honghong Shi,Wenjuan Yan,Xin Jin,Chaohe Yang

Glutaric acid is an important C5 platform compound in the polyester industry. However, catalytic synthesis of glutaric acid from biomass still remains largely unexplored in this field. We reported in this work a bimetallic PtAu/TiO2 catalyst for the facile liquid-phase oxidation of bioderived 1,5-pentanediol to glutaric acid, with a remarkable yield of 87% at 80 °C and 1 MPa O2. It is found that the Pt/TiO2 catalyst displays weak π-donation with a C═O bond, with 5-hydroxypentanal as the dominant product during primary oxidation. However, doping Au into Pt/TiO2 elevates the energy level of dx2–y2 orbitals at Pt sites and promotes the generation of •OH radicals. As a result, fast secondary oxidation reactions were achieved toward the formation of glutaric acid as the target product. The mechanistic information revealed in this work is useful in designing synergistic catalysts for the liquid-phase synthesis of various other biodicarboxylic acids in a base-free medium.

In-situ inhibition mechanism of SO3 formation over MoS2 modified V2O5/TiO2 catalyst within selective catalytic reduction process

Tingfeng Shan,Zhen Zhang,Bowen Li,Qi Zhang,Xiangfu Wang,Yusi He,Hongmin Yang

The utilization of commercial vanadium-titanium based catalysts (V 2 O 5 /TiO 2 ) within the selective catalytic reduction (SCR) process is a prominent contributor to the emergence of sulfur trioxide (SO 3 ) in coal-fired boiler environments. The direct modification of vanadium-titanium based catalysts has big potential to be an efficacious strategy for in-situ inhibiting SO 3 formation. This research evaluates the effectiveness of MoS 2 modified V 2 O 5 /TiO 2 catalyst on SO 2 oxidation under diverse conditions, using controlled condensation for SO 3 collection. The results showed that V 2 O 5 -MoS 2 /TiO 2 catalysts outperformed conventional V 2 O 5 /TiO 2 catalysts in inhibiting the oxidation from SO 2 to SO 3 between 200 and 400 °C, with optimal performance at 350 °C. No significant effect was observed on the catalytic oxidation of SO 2 when the O 2 concentration was lower than that of SO 2 , whereas the introduction of appropriate quantities of NO promoted the generation of SO 3 . The excessive inclusion of NH 3 nearly doubled the SO 3 generation rate, increasing it from 0.284 % to 0.434 %. The NO and NH 3 mixture markedly reduced SO 3 generation to 0.085 % at a 62 mL/min mixture concentration, just 30 % of the rate without the mixture. Following the reaction of SO 2 and O 2 , the reacted catalyst exhibited reduced pore volume, enhanced thermochemical stability, and lower susceptibility to SO 2 catalytic oxidation. The addition of low-valence sulfur improves catalyst reducibility, reduces V 5+ –OH reactions in various atmospheres, and decreases the formation of sulphate and gaseous SO 3 . The Mo-S-Mo group also effectively prevents the formation of HSO 4 − intermediates. Additionally, MoS 2 reacts with SO 3 via a reduction reaction, significantly lowering the SO 3 levels. Finally, in diverse atmospheric conditions, the catalysts maintained their V 5+ content and catalytic efficiency, thus improving SCR performance stability.

Preparation of highly dispersed SnO/TiO2 catalysts and their performances in catalyzing polyol ester

Huaigang Su,Qin Zhao,Cheng Jiang,Yanan Wang,Yongfang Niu,Xuelian Li,Wenjing Lou,Yanxing Qi,Xiaobo Wang

A series of stannous oxide supported on rutile titanium dioxide (SnO/TiO2) were prepared by a conventional incipient wetness impregnation method, and their performance as catalysts for fatty acid esterification reactions was investigated. The effects of Sn precursors (SnCl2·2H2O or SnC2O4), loading amounts (5–15%), and treating ambiences (air and N2) were explored. The optimized 10% SnO/TiO2–Cl with SnCl2·2H2O as the Sn precursor and thermal treatment in N2 showed the best esterification performance. Specifically, 10% SnO/TiO2–Cl catalyzed the esterification process of trimethylolpropane and n-octanoic acid with a conversion of 99.6% over 5 h at 160 °C, and 10% SnO/TiO2–Cl was efficient for six catalytic cycles. Based on the results of X-ray diffraction (XRD), Raman spectra, high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), infrared spectra of pyridine adsorption (Py-IR), and ammonia temperature programmed desorption (NH3-TPD), the improved catalytic performance is supposed to be attributable to the high dispersion of the Sn species on 10% SnO/TiO2–Cl as the moderate Lewis acid sites.

Construction of functionalized Pt-O-S bridge on Pt/TiO2 simultaneously enhancing the catalytic activity and sulfur resistance for CO oxidation

Cangpeng Shan,Qinwei Jia,Yan Zhang,Guoshuai Liu,Xinyu Hou,Yunchong Wang,Rui Han,Caixia Liu,Weichao Wang,Qingling Liu

Removing industrial source CO through catalytic oxidation and providing heat for denitrification units have significant economic and environmental benefits. Sulfur poisoning of catalysts is the bottleneck to stabilize the system operation. To overcome this problem, we fabricated sulfate modified Pt/TiO 2 by appropriate NH 4 HSO 4 deposition, which survived in the SO 2 environment with the concentration as high as 1000 ppm SO 2 , and exhibited an outstanding stability with over 90% CO conversion at 200 °C for 500   h under a typical steel sintering flue gas condition. Experimental and theoretical explorations confirmed that the electronic structure of PtO x clusters was optimized through Pt-O-S bridges after sulfate modification. The O 2p band center closer to the Fermi level and the smaller energy difference between Pt 5d and O 2p band centers led to more active lattice oxygen of PtO x clusters. The more stable π back bonding between Pt 5d and CO 2p and weaker hybridization between Pt and the π⁎ (Ssp2-Osp2)2 orbital of SO 2 indicated enhanced CO adsorption while weakened SO 2 adsorption on Pt sites. The above factors simultaneously improved the low-temperature activity and sulfur resistance for CO oxidation over sulfate modified Pt/TiO 2 . This work provides new insights for the design of sulfur-resistant catalysts and the understanding on the effect of sulfates on catalytic activity.

The deactivation mechanism of Pb on the Ce/TiO2 catalyst for the selective catalytic reduction of NOx with NH3: TPD and DRIFT studies

Shu-xian Wang,Rui-tang Guo,Wei-guo Pan,Ming-yuan Li,Peng Sun,Shu-ming Liu,Shuai-wei Liu,Xiao Sun,Jian Liu

It was well recognized that Pb had a poisoning effect on a SCR catalyst. In this study, the deactivation mechanism of Pb on the Ce/TiO2 catalyst was investigated based on the characterization results of TPD and in situ DRIFT studies. It was found that the addition of Pb on the Ce/TiO2 catalyst not only inhibited the adsorption and activation of NH3 species, but also led to the decrease of the activity of adsorbed NH3 species in the SCR reaction. The adsorption of NOx species and the oxidation of NO by O2 over the Ce/TiO2 catalyst were also suppressed by the addition of Pb, while the reactivity of adsorbed NO2 species did not decrease. Moreover, the results revealed that the NH3-SCR reaction over the Ce/TiO2 catalyst followed both the E–R and L–H mechanisms, while the NH3-SCR reaction over Ce/TiO2-Pb was mainly controlled by the L–H mechanism. The contributions of the L–H mechanism to the SCR reactions over Ce/TiO2 and Ce/TiO2-Pb decreased with increasing reaction temperature. The deactivation of Ce/TiO2-Pb was mainly attributed to the suppressed NH3 adsorption and activation, accompanied by the inhibited NO oxidation and the decrease of Brønsted acid sites.

Enhanced Photothermal Catalytic Conversion of CO2 into CO Using Uniformly Dispersed Pt on Mesoporous TiO2

Xining Guo,Huiying Li,Leshi Zhang,Rui Hao,Fei Ye,Jianmin Gu,Kaihang Sun,Guozhu Li,Ji−Jun Zou,Zhourong Xiao,Desong Wang

The photothermal catalytic conversion of CO2 into value-added chemicals is of great significance for realizing the goal of carbon neutralization. However, these catalysts have problems such as an insignificant photothermal effect and high recombination of photogenerated carriers. Here, porous TiO2 was prepared by hydrothermal crystallization and topological conversion of metal–organic frameworks (MOFs), and loaded with highly dispersed Pt catalysts to realize an efficient photothermal catalytic reverse water-gas shift (RWGS) reaction. N2-adsorption results showed that the as-prepared Pt/TiO2 catalysts had an abundant mesoporous structure, thus contributing to the rapid diffusion of reactants and light transport. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) results showed that Pt was uniformly dispersed on the catalyst surface with an average particle size of 2.06 nm. H2-TPR profiles showed that the Pt/TiO2 catalyst had strong metal–support interactions, CO2-TPD showed its strong CO2 adsorption capacity, and CO-TPD showed its weak CO adsorption strength. In situ X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) showed that the electron cloud density on the Pt surface further increased under light illumination, which contributed to the activation and dissociation of H2. In addition, the Pt/TiO2 catalyst had a narrow band gap width and sufficiently low reduction potential, and its excellent photothermal and photovoltaic properties ensured efficient performance in the photothermal RWGS reaction. The Pt/TiO2 catalysts showed a high CO2 conversion of 29.8%, a product CO selectivity higher than 99.6%, and a stability of more than 3000 min at 350 °C, with a light intensity of 1.2 W cm–2 and a GHSV of 36,000 mL gcat–1 h–1.
