Rheological characteristics of novel cellulose/superbase-derived ionic liquid solutions and the coagulation process towards regenerated cellulose films

Xiaoyu Wang,Wenqiu Zheng,Zongwei Guo,Haq Nawaz,Tingting You,Xin Li,Feng Xu

The preparation of regenerated cellulose (RC) materials with high performance via dissolution processing is dependent on the properties of the cellulose solution and the conditions of the coagulation bath. Herein, a novel sustainable superbase-derived ionic liquid (SIL, [DBUH][CH3CH2OCH2COO]) with excellent solubility (14.83 wt% at 80 °C) for dissolving wood pulp (DWP; DP = 526) is demonstrated. The rheological characteristics of DWP/[DBUH][CH3CH2OCH2COO] solutions and the regeneration process of cellulose were first systematically investigated. The results indicated that the DWP concentration significantly affected the apparent viscosity (η), structural viscosity index (Δη), overlap concentration (c*), entanglement concentration (ce), storage modulus (G′), and loss modulus (G′′). Notably, a 12 wt% DWP solution possessed favourable temperature-sensitive properties with an activation energy (Eη) of 55.428 kJ mol−1 and a gel–sol transition temperature of 59.5 °C, presenting superior viscoelasticity to that of imidazolium-based ILs/cellulose in fibre spinning. Moreover, these properties of DWP solutions offered essential advantages for the subsequent preparation of RC films. Comparing the properties of RC films prepared in various coagulation baths, cellulose films regenerated from ethanol exhibited high transparency (up to 90% at 800 nm) and outstanding mechanical properties (tensile strength: 120 MPa; elongation at break: 12%). In this regard, it was inferred that the diffusion rates between [DBUH][CH3CH2OCH2COO] and ethanol contributed to the construction of RC films with high crystallinity and a dense morphology. Hence, [DBUH][CH3CH2OCH2COO] as a solvent and ethanol as a coagulation bath can be a promising processing platform for manufacturing high-performance cellulose materials.

Recoverable acrylamide-vinylamine copolymer immobilized TEMPO mediated oxidation of cellulose with good catalytic performance and low cellulose degradation

Sun Tingting,Wang Huimin,Liu Jiaye,Chu Xiaomeng,Xing Xuteng,Liu Shaojie,Tang Erjun,Liu Xinying,Hildebrandt Diane

In this work, a recoverable acrylamide-vinylamine copolymer immobilized TEMPO [P(AM-co-VAm)-T] catalyst for selective oxidation of cellulose with good catalytic performance and low cellulose degradation was developed. Firstly, the acrylamide-vinylamine copolymer [P(AM-co-VAm)] was prepared by Hofmann degradation of polyacrylamide (PAM). Then, the condensation reduction reaction between amine groups of P(AM-co-VAm) and carbonyl groups of 4-oxo-TEMPO yielded P(AM-co-VAm)-T. P(AM-co-VAm)-T was used as a catalyst for selective oxidation of C6 primary hydroxyl groups of cellulose to carboxyl groups. The carboxyl content of obtained oxidized cellulose was up to 1.114 mmol/g, which was equivalent to 76% of the free TEMPO level. This macromolecular catalyst was easily recycled and the recycling performance was excellent. Interestingly, it was found that P(AM-co-VAm)-T could effectively reduce the degradation of oxidized cellulose. The corresponding degradation degree was 21–27%, which was much lower than the degradation degree of free TEMPO (61–66%) and other macromolecular TEMPO catalysts, such as polyacrylic acid immobilized-TEMPO (41–53%) and polyamidoamine supported TEMPO (28–44%). P(AM-co-VAm)-T with positive charge and suitable size could effectively inhibit the formation of C6 aldehydes and C2/C3 ketones, which was the main reason that it could significantly inhibit cellulose degradation.

Rapid transesterification of cellulose in a novel DBU-derived ionic liquid: Efficient synthesis of highly substituted cellulose acetate

Xiangli Gao,Huan Liu,Jianbo Shuai,Junmeng Zhao,Guowen Zhou,Quanbo Huang,Hao Ling,Wenjiao Ge,Xiaohui Wang

Cellulose acetate (CA) is one of the most important cellulose plastics that has demonstrated extensive applications in many areas. In search of a more sustainable and efficient way to prepare CA, we synthesized a novel ionic liquid , [DBUC 8 ]Cl, based on the commonly used catalyst DBU (1,8-diazabicyclo[5.4.0]undecyquin-7-ene) in a simple manner. [DBUC 8 ]Cl can dissolve cellulose more efficiently than the same type of imidazolyl ionic liquid, owing to the stronger alkalinity of DBU. It is noteworthy that highly substituted CA (DS = 2.82) was successfully synthesized via transesterification with alkenyl ester under mild conditions (80 °C, 40 min) without the addition of a catalyst in this solvent, which is superior to most of the reported work. Furthermore, we confirmed that the synthesized CA had good thermoplasticity, and a transparent cellulose acetate film (CAF) was obtained by hot pressing with a small amount of glycerol. Therefore, we propose a new DBU-derived ionic liquid, which may serve as a versatile platform system for producing cellulose-derived bioplastics more sustainably and efficiently.

Covalent organic framework@cellulose nanofibrils@carboxymethyl cellulose composite hydrogel beads for the removal of nickel ions from aqueous solutions

Bingbing Zhao,Xu Fu,Yaoyue Di,Ligang Wei,Guolin Shao,Hemin Cui,Li Wei,Na Liu,Qingda An,Shangru Zhai

A novel adsorbent, covalent organic framework (COF)@cellulose nanofibrils (CNF) @carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) composite hydrogel bead (C CCHB), was prepared for Ni 2+ removal from aqueous solutions. The imine COF provides the main active sites for adsorption. CNF is used as the carrier for grafting COF to improve the dispersion of COF and the reinforcing material. CMC is used as the hydrogel matrix to facilitate easy recycling. The equilibrium adsorption capacity (q e ) of the C CCHB is vastly influenced by the mass ratio of COF@CNF/CMC. The optimized mass ratio of COF@CNF/CMC is 0.050/1 (g/g). The maximum adsorption is reached at pH=6. The q e of Ni 2+ increases with a rise in initial concentration of the solution. Based on Langmuir isotherms, the maximum adsorption capacity of C CCHB is 289.50 mg/g. The adsorption of Ni 2+ complies with the pseudo-second-order kinetic model. The C CCHBs still maintain preferable adsorption properties after the seventh cycle of adsorption–desorption. The Ni 2+ adsorption of the C CCHB is mainly attributed to the chelating effect and electrostatic interaction.

Direct Carboxymethylation of Cellulose Fibers by Ternary Reactive Deep Eutectic Solvents for the Preparation of High-Yield Cellulose Nanofibrils

Guangrui Ma,Wenqi Yin,Zhijun Shi,Yan Xu,Guang Yang

Carboxymethylation-modified cellulose nanofibrils (CMCNF) were prepared from bamboo fibers through a pretreatment process using a ternary deep eutectic solvent (DES) system consisting of chloroacetic acid, urea, and choline chloride. Grinding treatment was also employed. The properties of the resulting CMCNF were characterized using various analytical instruments including a fiber image analyzer, field-emission scanning electron microscope, X-ray diffractometer, and atomic force microscope. The results indicated that ternary DES pretreatment has the capability to carboxymethylate-modify the raw fiber material while maintaining the crystalline structure of cellulose. Additionally, it induced a wetting and swelling effect on the fibers, leading to the successful disruption of strong hydrogen bonds and the rapid production of cellulose nanofibrils during mechanical treatment. The carboxymethylation alteration enhanced the ability of the resultant CNF to disperse and increased the stability of the suspension. Furthermore, extending the duration of DES pretreatment enhances the process of fiber fibrillation and diminishes fiber polymerization. The CMCNF produced exhibited a high aspect ratio, with diameters ranging from 10 to 50 nm and lengths extending to a few micrometers. This study presents a novel approach and concept for producing carboxymethylated nanofibrillated cellulose. It also introduces a straightforward, environmentally friendly, and effective method for mass production of bamboo pulp nanofibrillated cellulose. This advancement is anticipated to enhance the processing and utilization of bamboo fiber resources, thereby contributing to an increased overall value.

Cellulose acetate/poly(vinyl alcohol) and cellulose acetate/crosslinked poly(vinyl alcohol) blend membranes: preparation, characterization, and antifouling properties

Jun Yin,Haijuan Fan,Jiancheng Zhou

Cellulose acetate (CA)/poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) blend membranes have been first prepared by non-solvent induced phase separation process. The pure water flux (PWF), hydrophilicity, and porosity increased with an increment in CA/PVA compositions up to 90/10. Then, polyvinyl pyrrolidone (PVP) as additive was added into the CA/PVA (90/10) casting solution. It was found that the PWF and porosity of CA/PVA/PVP blend membranes increased initially and then declined with the addition of PVP. Meanwhile, the effect of PVP content in CA/PVA blend membranes on fouling-resistant ability was studied using oil-in-water emulsion. The result indicated that all CA/PVA/PVP blend membranes had better antifouling property than CA/PVA membrane. If the PVA content in the casting solution increased to 20 wt%, the fabricating of membrane was difficult because of the strong hydrophilicity and large swelling capacity of PVA. Therefore, PVA was first crosslinked with glutaraldehyde (GA) as the crosslinking agent, followed by in situ blended with CA and PVP to fabricating the CA/crosslinked PVA (CPVA) (80/20)/PVP blend membrane. The effect of GA and PVP content on hydrophilicity, morphology, and performance of CA/CPVA (80/20)/PVP blend membranes were also discussed in detail.

Preparation and characterization of cellulose bromo-isobutyl ester based on filter paper: Cellulose bromo ester based on filter paper

Rina Wu,Qiuyu Wang,Huayu Liu,Gaosheng Wang,Peng Lu

Cellulose bromo-isobutyl ester was prepared using filter paper as raw material through esterification reaction with 2-Bromoisobutyryl bromide (BIBB) in N, N-Dimethyl-formamide (DMF). Cellulose esters with different degree of substitution were obtained. FTIR result indicated the successful introduction of bromo isobutyryl group in cellulose to obtain cellulose ester (Cell-Br). The surface of modified filter paper become rough and grooves could be observed by SEM. The thermal stability of the cellulose ester decreased in comparison with unmodified filter paper. Besides, the hydrophobicity of the filter paper was improved and the water contact angle increased from 73.4° to 116.5° with increasing degree of substitution. The water vapor barrier property was improved by 26 %. Furthermore, it was also found the modified filter paper possessed antibacterial activity against S. aureus bacteria. The modified filter paper obtained could be potentially used in food packaging fields and the results provide a simple method to prepare functional filter paper.

Green and efficient utilization of cellulose by in situ regenerating rod-like cellulose crystals in dry blending rubber compounds

Peixing Li,Haoze Yuan,Xinyu Wang,Cheng Yu,Xin Wang,Jutao Sun

The crystalline cellulose has captured much attention as reinforcement material in rubber composites, but no successful cases have been found till now. Here, a facile approach of cellulose utilization was proposed by in-situ regenerating cellulose in dry rubber matrix. Cellulose was dissolved in ionic liquid (IL), and then directly mixed with dry rubber, silica, and other ingredients. Taking advantages of the strong interaction between IL and silica, the dissolution equilibrium of cellulose/IL was destroyed and resulted in the regeneration of cellulose crystals in rubber matrix. The regenerated cellulose appeared at dry blending stage, and showed an ideal rod-like shape (10–100 nm in diameter and 200–500 nm in length). While it grew in size at curing stage, and finally reached 100–200 nm in diameter and 1–2 μm in length. The regenerated cellulose exhibited pronounced reinforcement efficiency. This methodology has no any waste liquid discharged, and has a promising use in the preparation of cellulose/rubber composites. Highlights Nanosized rod-like cellulose was regenerated in dry rubber, instead of latex. Regeneration of cellulose was due to interaction between ionic liquid and silica. The in situ regenerated cellulose dispersed well in cured rubber compounds. The regenerated cellulose exhibited a good reinforcement efficiency in rubber. The whole machining process had no any waste liquid discharged.

PUL/HPMC water-in-water Pickering emulsions stabilized by cellulose nanocrystals and cellulose nanofibers: construction, stabilization mechanism, and stability

Chunling Nie,Yefan Niu,Weina Guo,Pengrui Wu,Yijun Liu,Zhonghui Shen,Zhihong Song,Xindi Wei,Yanbo Wang,Hong Zeng,Jianguo Wang

Water-in-water (W/W) Pickering emulsions have aligned with the increasing consumer demands for health foods due to their entirely aqueous formulation with oil-free. In this work, Pullulan (PUL) and Hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (HPMC) were used to construct polysaccharide-based W/W Pickering emulsion system. PUL and HPMC concentrations played crucial roles in droplet sizes and phase behavior of PUL/HPMC Pickering emulsions. Cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) and cellulose nanofibrils (CNFs) were used as stabilizers to prepare PUL/HPMC Pickering emulsions and the stabilization mechanisms were investigated. PUL/HPMC Pickering emulsions stabilized by CNCs with a rigid rod-like structure and strong interfacial adsorption capacity exhibited smaller and more uniform droplet morphology and higher storage stability, whereas the flexible fibrillar CNFs tended to form entangled networks in the continuous phase and bridge droplets, resulting in droplet deformation and coalescence. Furthermore, environmental stability of PUL/HPMC Pickering emulsions revealed that increasing CNCs concentration could significantly enhance their centrifugal and thermal stability. This work would provide a novel insight into the stabilization behavior of nanocellulose with different morphologies in W/W Pickering emulsions and broaden potential applications of W/W Pickering emulsions in functional food fields.

Quantitative evaluation of cellulose swelling and dissolution behavior by monitoring the retention of NMMO solvent in cellulose fiber structure

Xinyu Qian,Yuqian Guo,Yumeng Zhao,Leilei Hou,Yun Cheng,Linghua Chen,Shuo Yang,Hongjie Zhang

The swelling performance of the biological macromolecules of cellulose in aqueous N -methyl-morpholine-N-oxide (NMMO) solution is a critical factor in improving cellulose dissolution efficiency during lyocell process. We focused on the diffusion behavior of NMMO solvent during cellulose swelling and dissolution process using a novel centrifugation method, clarifying the relationship between NMMO retention value, fiber structural properties, and dissolution efficiency. An effective quantitative index for evaluating the swelling performances of cellulose is NMMO-retention, which was defined by investigating the removal of aqueous NMMO solution from swollen cellulose fibers using centrifugal method. Based on the variation of NMMO-retention and centrifugal force at 500 and 3000  g , the removal process was divided into three stages: rapid removal stage (0–500 g), slow removal stage (500–3000 g), and residual removal stage (3000–5000 g). In addition, the relationship between fiber structural properties (fiber length, width, fine content, and specific surface area) and swelling-dissolution performance was established. The results indicate that the NMMO-retention of cellulose is a comprehensive reflection of the fiber structural characteristics, and it shows an obvious negative correlation with the dissolution time of cellulose. The cellulose that shows the highest NMMO-retention (729.5 %) after swelling has the shortest dissolution time (20 min) during subsequent dissolution.

Hydroxy propyl cellulose-coated and prochloraz-loaded calcium carbonate carriers with pH/cellulose responsiveness for environmentally-safe fungicide delivery

Qianyu Cai,Yucheng Chen,Ting Wang,Qiongmei Mai,Jianglong Hu,Yunyou Lv,Yanhui Zhou,Jie Liu

The advancement of stimulus-responsive pesticide delivery systems offers a pivotal strategy for reconciling agricultural productivity with ecological sustainability. This study engineers a cellulose-functionalized vaterite calcium carbonate (CaCO3) nanoplatform (Pro@CaCO3@HPC, PCH) endowed with pH/cellulase dual-responsive intelligence for targeted prochloraz delivery. The hierarchically porous vaterite architecture facilitates superior drug loading (12.4%, w/w), while demonstrating environmentally triggered release kinetics. Controlled liberation studies reveal 2.37-fold and 2.13-fold cumulative release enhancements under acidic conditions and cellulase exposure, respectively, compared to neutral environments—a response mechanism strategically aligned with the pathophysiological microenvironment of Sclerotinia sclerotiorum infection. The multifunctional nanoformulation exhibits threefold advantages: (1) enhanced antifungal performance, achieving 96.1% mycelial inhibition at 1 µg mL−1 compared to conventional formulations (72.7%); (2) reduced environmental footprint through 27.7% decreased soil mobility relative to free prochloraz; (3) improved biosafety profiles, maintaining crop germination rates 13.3% higher than commercial formulations while demonstrating attenuated cytotoxicity. This phytopathology-activated delivery system establishes a technological paradigm that synchronizes three critical agricultural requirements: pathogen-responsive precision, environmental persistence mitigation, and non-target organism protection. Therefore, this study provides an environmentally friendly, intelligent and efficient strategy, which shows great potential in the field of Sclerotinia sclerotiorum control.

Preparation of monodisperse cellulose acetate-laurate/calcium borate/cellulose acetate-laurate nanocapsule and its tribological properties in polyalphaolefin oil

Danni Hu,Huangjuan Li,Zhenfei Feng,Huayu Hu,Yanjuan Zhang,Tao Gan,Zuqiang Huang

Two-dimensional composites with a core-shell structure used as lubricant additives tend to experience separation and delamination of the core and shell materials under high loads, resulting in poor tribological performance. Herein, monodisperse and spherical cellulose acetate-laurate/calcium borate/cellulose acetate-laurate (CAL/CB/CAL) nanocapsules with three-dimensional network structure were prepared by high-pressure homogenization combined with solvent evaporation method. CAL/CB/CAL exhibited good dispersibility and long-term dispersion stability in polyalphaolefin (PAO) oil, and only slight stratification appeared after 21 d. Moreover, CAL/CB/CAL used as a lubricant additive for PAO oil demonstrated excellent anti-wear and extreme pressure properties under 392 N at 75 °C. Particularly, the wear scar diameter and coefficient of friction of CAL/CB/CAL were reduced by 14.1 and 26.4 % under 490 N, respectively, relative to CB@CAL with a core-shell structure. The excellent tribological properties of CAL/CB/CAL under low load were attributed to the synergistic action between the rolling effect of CB and the sliding effect of CAL, while under high load, its three-dimensional network structure could avoid the separation and delamination of CB and CAL, thus evenly penetrating into the friction surface to form tribochemical films. This study provides feasible approach to address the limitations of two-dimensional core-shell composites in lubrication applications.
