Calcium decorated Copper@Nitrogen-Doped carbon towards highly selective hydrogenation of biomass derived furfural

Jun Zhang,Yaoxin Xiao,Rui Shan,Haoran Yuan,Yong Chen

In the present research, calcium decorated copper@nitrogen-doped carbon (marked as Cu 1 Ca x @CN) derived from biomass was constructed for highly selective hydrogenation of bio-based furfural (FFR), which remarkably favored furan ring hydrogenation for tetrahydrofurfuryl alcohol (THFA) formation via regulating the hydrogenation path. Remarkably, the in-situ generated basic sites from N- and Ca-containing species were beneficial to the good metal dispersion as well as the chemical activation of aldehyde and C=C groups, thus favoring the FFR-to-THFA transformation. The optimal basic density-to-copper mass ratio in a range of 3.0 ∼ 4.0 was attained, in consideration of THFA generation. The as-prepared Cu 1 Ca 0.87 @CN catalyst could afford full FFR conversion as well as 75.6 % THFA yield under 3 MPa H 2 atmosphere, which also exhibited excellent stability and could be recycled four times without any deactivation. In addition, the basic sites in the as-prepared Cu 1 Ca x @CN samples were capable of activating both the C=O and C=C bonds, and the activation of C=O bond took precedence over that of C=C bond, especially in the case of relative low temperatures. Plausible reaction mechanism for FFR-to-THFA transformation under the synergistic effect of active Cu 0 center and basic sites was proposed in detail.

Biosynthesis, structure and antioxidant activities of xanthan gum from Xanthomonas campestris with additional furfural

Yan Kang,Panyu Li,Xiaotong Zeng,Xi Chen,Yi Xie,Yu Zeng,Yongkui Zhang,Tonghui Xie

Lignocellulosic-like materials are potentially low-cost fermentation substrates, but their pretreatment brings about by-products. This work investigated the effects of furfural on xanthan gum (XG) production, and product quality was evaluated by structure, viscosity and antioxidant capacities. Xanthomonas campestris maintained steady polysaccharide yield (above 13 g·L –1 ) with enhanced cell growth at low furfural concentrations (below 3.2 g·L –1 ). The products were verified as XG by FT-IR, XRD, NMR and monosaccharide analysis. Moreover, they were found to have reduced acetyl, rising pyruvate and up-to-down glucuronic acid groups as increasing furfural concentration. Furthermore, XG product with 1 g·L –1 furfural addition showed the best hydroxyl scavenging effects, though reducing powers presented no variation. It was demonstrated that furfural, the common hydrolysis by-product, was not necessarily an inhibitor for fermentation, and an appropriate amount of furfural was beneficial to XG production with steady yield and good quality.

Corncob lignocellulose for the production of furfural by hydrothermal pretreatment and heterogeneous catalytic process

Aojie Deng,Junli Ren,Huiling Li,Feng Peng,Runcang Sun

Corncob with a high content of pentose-rich hemicelluloses shows great potential for furfural production. In this paper, an environmentally-friendly two-step process for furfural production was developed by the hydrothermal pretreatment of corncob and the heterogeneous catalysis of the hydrolysate using a solid acid catalyst. The hydrothermal pretreatment was applied to release hemicelluloses from the cell wall of the corncob, which were hydrolyzed into monosaccharide and oligosaccharide under the investigated conditions (160–190 °C, 0–60 min). Subsequently, heterogeneous catalysis of the hydrolysate obtained from the hydrothermal pretreatment was performed using SO42−/SiO2–Al2O3/La3+ as a solid acid catalyst at 150 °C for 2.5 h. The maximum yield of furfural achieved was up to 21% under the investigated experimental conditions from the catalysis of hydrolysates obtained at 190 °C for 60 min in the hydrothermal process. Moreover, there was no obvious change in the catalytic activity of SO42−/SiO2–Al2O3/La3+ after four runs, and only a decline of 5.28% yield of furfural was observed. This two-step process is an environmentally-friendly process for furfural production from pentose-rich biomass and serves as an effective approach for recovering the solid catalyst from the reaction medium.

Ru/TiO2-photocatalysed synthesis of γ-butyrolactone from a furfural derivative under mild conditions

Yang Peng,Haikuan Yang,Ting Zhang,Songsong Zhou,Haiwei Jiang,Yongjie Zheng,Weiran Yang

Synthesis of γ -butyrolactone (GBL) from renewable biomass resources under mild reaction condition with catalysis is attractive but challenging. Herein, we report the photocatalytic oxidation of the biomass-based furfural derivative tetrahydrofurfuryl alcohol (THFAL) to prepare GBL under light irradiation (365 nm) in air at room temperature. Utilising Ru/TiO 2 as the photocatalyst and air as the oxidant, a GBL yield as high as 73 % was achieved. The reaction mechanism was studied rigorously by performing photocatalyst performance evaluation, material characterisation, free-radical quenching reactions and electron spin resonance (ESR). In situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy was employed to detect intermediate products and elucidate the mechanism at the molecular level. Based on the in-situ monitoring results, we propose a pathway for the oxidation decarbonylation of THFAL to produce CO 2 and GBL.

Catalytic Conversion of Xylose to Furfural Using AlCl3-Dominant Catalysts in a Homogeneous System

Wang Wenju,Ren Junli,Li Huiling,Peng Feng,Sun Runcang,Liu Shijie

A feasible and environmental-friendly approach was developed for the dehydration of xylose into furfural using AlCl3-dominant catalysts in a homogeneous DMSO/H2O system. Results showed that the paired chlorides (AlCl3/KCl) in the molar fraction (χAlCl3 ) of 0.6 displayed the better catalytic performance than the single AlCl3 and the other paired chlorides. The influences of catalyst amount, reaction temperatures as well as xylose concentration on the dehydration of xylose into furfural were studied. The effects of co-solvents (DMF, DMI, DMAC and NMP) on the production of furfural were also investigated. DMSO exhibited the better enhancement effect and the desirable DMSO/water volume ratio was 5:5, indicating DMSO could efficiently suppress the side reaction and enhance the selectivity. The maximum furfural yield of 43.6% with xylose conversion of 97.9% and the selectivity of 44.6% was achieved at 170°C for 2 h with a total catalyst/xylose molar ratio of 0.5 at the solid to liquid ratio of 1:10.

Cascade conversion of furfural to fuel bioadditive ethyl levulinate over bifunctional zirconium-based catalysts

Mengzhu Li,Junnan Wei,Guihua Yan,Huai Liu,Xing Tang,Yong Sun,Xianhai Zeng,Tingzhou Lei,Lu Lin

Biomass-derived ethyl levulinate (EL) is currently deemed as a promising fuel bioadditive to improve (bio)diesel combustion performance without the sacrifice of its octane number . In this contribution, a range of Zr–Al bimetallic catalysts were prepared for the cascade conversion of furfural to EL by the integration of transfer hydrogenation and ethanolysis in ethanol. The ratio of Lewis to Brønsted acid sites (L/B) could be tuned by the ratio of Al 2 O 3 to ZrO 2 over SBA-15 support. Among these catalysts, Zr–Al/SBA-15(30:10) with appropriate L/B ratio of 2.25 exhibited an outstanding catalytic performance to give a furfural (FF) conversion up to 92.8% with a EL selectivity as high as 71.4% at 453 K in 3 h.

Microwave-enhanced pyrolysis of bamboo for furfural-rich bio-oil production over WS2 catalyst

Penghao Liu,Zhiwei Jiang,Yongjian Zeng,Yaolin Wang,Chen Zeng,Xin Tu,Kai Yan

The efficient utilization of bamboo waste has attracted increasing interest as a promising solution to address the challenges associated with climate change and promote a more environmentally friendly approach to resource utilization. Herein, we demonstrated the highly selective production of furfural from bamboo through a microwave-assisted pyrolysis (MAP) process using WS 2 catalysts. Firstly, the content of furfural can be precisely regulated by manipulating key process conditions such as microwave power, temperature and the mass ratio of WS 2 to bamboo. Notably, compared to non-catalyzed MAP, the presence of the WS 2 catalyst significantly enhanced the production of both furfural and furan components. The optimal content of furfural and furan components reached up to 66.9 area% and 75.6 area% in bio-oil under the conditions of 700 W, 400 °C and a 3:10 WS 2 to bamboo ratio for 15 min. Furthermore, the liquid oil mainly consisted of C5 and C6 products (86.5 area%), indicating that MAP enhances the selectivity of small molecular products and furan compounds when coupled with the WS 2 catalyst. Experimental results revealed that WS 2 played bifunctional roles as a microwave absorbent and catalyst, promoting the bio-oil content and limiting the secondary pyrolysis of furan components, leading to a high selectivity of furan and a high content of furan products. This work provides valuable insights into producing furan-rich bio-oil from bamboo through MAP over transition metal dichalcogenides materials.

Gold nanoparticle-catalyzed oxidative esterification of furfural: Enhancement by NaOH-etched γ-Al2O3 support

Xianjie Li,Bingxiao Feng,Hailin Zhang,Yaping Liu,Meng Xiao,Tingting Huang,Quanhong Zhu,Hongbing Song

Furfural, a key biomass-derived compound, can be transformed into high-value chemicals, including methyl furoate, through oxidative esterification. This process finds broad applications across various industries. In the current study, gold nanoparticles were deposited on γ-Al 2 O 3 pretreated with NaOH etching, utilizing the urea deposit-precipitation method followed by reduction in a hydrogen atmosphere. This approach resulted in a highly active Au catalyst, which was thoroughly characterized using multiple analytical techniques. The optimization of NaOH etching enhanced the pore structure and improved the dispersion of the active metal on the support. Notably, the Au/γ-Al 2 O 3 -2 catalyst, prepared with a 2-hour etching duration using 1 M NaOH, exhibited uniformly dispersed gold nanoparticles with an average size of 2.8 nm. The smaller particle size and enhanced dispersion of these Au nanoparticles significantly contributed to the catalyst’s superior catalytic activity and recyclability. Under optimized reaction conditions, the Au/γ-Al 2 O 3 -2 catalyst achieved nearly complete conversion of 1 mmol of furfural to methyl furoate within 4 h, with both conversion and selectivity exceeding 99 %. The study also proposed a mechanism for the oxidative esterification of furfural to methyl furoate catalyzed by Au/γ-Al 2 O 3 -2. Additionally, the catalyst’s effectiveness in the oxidative esterification of various substrates was investigated, demonstrating its robust activity for aromatic aldehydes and alcohols. This broadens the potential applications of the catalyst in the synthesis of diverse valuable esters.

Investigation on the synthesis of furfural via pyrolysis utilizing metal-loaded solid acid catalysts

Qihang Ye,Yihui Li,Zhaoping Zhong,Wei Wang,Xiang Zheng,Haoran Du,Qian Li,Yuxuan Yang,Renzhi Qi

The preparation of furfural, a valuable platform compound, through pyrolysis is an approach with practical prospects. Since cellulose represents the most abundant component in biomass feedstocks, enhancing its selectivity towards furfural during pyrolysis is crucial. In this study, S0 4 2- /Zr0 2 -based catalysts by loading them with various metals such as Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, and Zn was used to optimize furfural yield from cellulose. Among these catalysts, those loaded with iron (Fe) achieved the highest selectivity for furfural, with the best performance at a loading of 6 % by weight. This is because an appropriate amount of loaded metal Fe can manipulate the acidity sites on the catalyst surface, reducing the ratio of weak acid to strong acid and favoring selective production of furfural. Additionally, moderate metal loading can enhance both specific surface area and total pore volume of the catalyst, further improving catalytic performance. The research using a catalyst with the loading of 6 %wt Fe showed that the furfural content in cellulose pyrolysis products reached its maximum when the pyrolysis temperature was 600°C. Further increase in temperature led to the decomposition and conversion of furfural into other products, reducing the furfural selectivity. The addition of catalyst effectively improved the furfural selectivity in cellulose pyrolysis products, and as the ratio of catalyst to cellulose gradually increased, the furfural selectivity reached its maximum value of 31.53 % at a pyrolysis temperature of 600℃ and a catalyst to cellulose ratio of 4:1. These findings provide an insight into the use of biomass for furfural preparation and improving the efficiency of its preparation.

Promotion effect of Fe in the selective hydrogenation of furfural with bimetallic NiFe catalysts

Xin Liu,Yezhou Yang,Jingru Yang,Maodi Wang,Qihua Yang

The selective hydrogenation of furfural (FAL) to furfuryl alcohol (FOL) over Ni catalysts offers a sustainable route for biomass valorization. However, the conventional Ni catalysts suffer from poor selectivity in FAL hydrogenation. Herein, we report that the moderate Fe doping in Ni/TiO 2 significantly enhances selectivity without compromising catalytic activity for the selective hydrogenation of FAL to FOL. Notably, Ni/Fe-TiO 2 catalyst with Fe content ≥ 4.9 wt% maintained > 90% selectivity toward FOL at nearly 100% conversion, whereas Ni/TiO 2 achieved only 38% under the identical condition. Combined experimental and theoretical studies revealed that the enhanced catalytic performance of Ni/Fe-TiO 2 originates from the dilution of contiguous Ni sites by Fe, which suppresses the further hydrogenation of FOL. Moreover, Fe sites exhibited a stronger affinity for carbonyl groups compared to Ni(0), indicating complementary role where Ni(0) primarily facilitates H 2 dissociation, while Fe sites play a critical role in carbonyl activation. These findings underscore the superior synergistic effect of bimetallic systems in promoting selective functional group transformation.

Breaking the activity-selectivity dilemma in direct electrocatalytic hydrogenolysis of furfural into furanic biofuel

Zhuang Xiuzheng,Liu Ke,Zhang Wenjie,Chen Gehao,Zhang Qi,Chen Lungang,Zhang Xinghua,Ma Longlong

Electrocatalytic hydrogenolysis of biomass-derived furfural usually encounters the disordered flow of electrons, particularly for the formation of 2-methylfuran with a complex four-electron transfer process. To address this, we develops an intermediates coverage-induced strategy through the mixed valences in copper clusters wrapped by carbonaceous matrix, which boosts the transfer of electrons toward 2-methylfuran with dual advantages in kinetics and thermodynamics. Experimental results indicate that the carbonaceous matrix create a furural-favorable environment for less adsorption of H + ; on it surface, the cleavage of C-O bonds in Fur-CH 2 OH * can be easily activated by Cu + sites for 2-methylfuran, while partial participation of Cu 0 accelerates the hydrogenation processes with an enhancement of local H * concentration, leading to the high selectivity and faradaic efficiency at 89.8% and 76.6%, respectively. In addition, the coexistence of Cu + and Cu 0 is also stable under cathodic conditions, but the deposition of polymers disturbs the intermediates coverage, which is subsequently mitigated through the continuous-flow reactor. This study provides insights into the interfacial modulation on electrode surface, advancing the development of efficient electrocatalysts for biomass valorization.

Targeted conversion of furfural from waste wood via catalyzed pyrolysis of acid-leaching residue

Shi Cheng,Cheng Tan,Yong Yu,Jun Huang,Jinlong Du,Jianhang Hu,Hua Wang

Furfural is an essential platform compound for organic chemicals. However, the low selectivity of furfural via fast pyrolysis of biomass hinders the widespread application. Herein, a novel method for preparing furfural-rich bio-oil from waste wood catalyzed by acid-leaching residue (ALR) is reported for the first time. The bio-oil yield reaches 74.87 wt%, and the highest reported furfural yield is 95.41 area% when pyrolyzed with a 1:4 mass ratio of waste wood to ALR at 500 °C. Chlorination of the ALR catalyst surface provides abundant Brønsted acid sites and drastically facilitates the directional selectivity of furfural. The furfural formation mechanism is investigated using monosaccharides as model compounds. The C5 sugars can be converted directly to furfural via dehydration, whereas the C6 sugars require a multistep conversion, producing by-products. This method realizes the reuse of waste wood and ALR, providing a new approach for preparing low-cost furfural.
