It is of great significance to develop piezoelectric composites with mechanical flexibility and high electromechanical coupling characteristics for the collection and conversion of mechanical energy. In this work, a barium titanate (BTO) based piezoelectric composite was prepared by hydrothermal synthesis and high-temperature carbonization with the assistance of cellulose nanofibers (CNF), graphene oxide (GO) and carboxylated carbon nanotubes (C-CNT). C-CNT, GO and CNF can provide growth sites for BTO, but compared with C-CNT, CNF and GO have stronger interaction with BTO, which can improve the compatibility between BTO and CNF/polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) matrix. The tensile strength of the composite membrane prepared by GO-CNF-BTO treated at 1100 °C can reach 23.36 ± 8.30 MPa. After further hot pressing and polarization treatment, its longitudinal piezoelectric coefficient (d 33 ) reaches 9.8 ± 2.6 pC·N −1 . Correspondingly, the open-circuit voltage (V OC ) and short-circuit current (I SC ) increases to 11.64 V and 824 nA, respectively. In addition, the assembled piezoelectric generator (PEG) can charge for small commercial capacitors, as well as light small bulbs and electronic screens. It also has good piezoelectric output stability and sensing performance, which can effectively convert the mechanical energy from human motion into electrical energy. This work provides a reference for the performance improvement of flexible piezoelectric devices.

Effective fractionation of lignocellulose into hemicellulose, cellulose, and lignin is the precondition for full-component valorization. Generally, harsh reaction conditions are used to improve fractionation efficiency, which leads to severe lignin condensation and inhibits its value-added applications. To address this issue, a novel biphasic system consisting of molten salt hydrates (MSHs) and n-butanol was developed for birch fractionation. After the removal of hemicellulose in dilute acid, the solid residue composed of cellulose and lignin was carried out in biphasic system conversion. Cellulose was selectively converted into 73.3% yield of glucan oligomers and 16.8% glucose in the MSH phase, while lignin was in situ-extracted into the n-butanol phase with a high yield of 98.1%. Mechanism studies revealed that the in situ extraction together with Cα–OH group modification by n-butanol synchronously protected lignin β-O-4 linkages from cleavage, resulting in a high β-O-4 content of 53.7%, indicating that 87.7% of β-O-4 linkages in birch has been preserved. After depolymerization, a promising monophenol yield of 22.4% was obtained, which was 81.5% of the theoretical maximum monophenol yield obtained from birch. This fractionation strategy can also be used in softwood and herbaceous, showing a splendid separation efficiency as well as a high yield of noncondensed lignin production.

Lignocellulose nanofibers (LCNF) obtained from agricultural waste are potential candidates for enhancing composite materials because of their excellent mechanical properties, abundant groups and high biocompatibility. However, the application of LCNF has received limited attention to date from researchers in the healthcare field. Herein, based on the bifunctional group (carboxyl and aldehyde groups) modified LCNF (DCLCNF) and chitosan (CS), we developed a multifunctional bio-based hydrogel (CS-DCLCNF). The addition of lignin-containing DCLCNF strengthened the internal crosslinking and the intermolecular interaction of hydrogels, and the presence of lignin and carboxyl groups increased the mechanical strength of the hydrogel and the adsorption of aromatic drugs. Results revealed that the hydrogels exhibited self-healing, injectable, and high swelling rates. The hydrogels had favorable mechanical strength (G' max of ~16.60 kPa), and the maximum compressive stress was 24 kPa. Moreover, the entire tetracycline hydrochloride (TH) release process was slow and pH-responsive, because of the rich noncovalent and π–π interactions between DCLCNF and TH. The hydrogels also exhibited excellent biocompatibility and antibacterial properties . Notably, the wound healing experiment showed that the hydrogels were beneficial in accelerating wounds healing, which could heal completely in 13 days. Therefore, CS-DCLCNF hydrogels may have promising applications in drug delivery for wound healing.

Background Lignocellulose is the most abundant biomass on earth. However, biomass recalcitrance has become a major factor affecting biofuel production. Although cellulose crystallinity significantly influences biomass saccharification, little is known about the impact of three major wall polymers on cellulose crystallization. In this study, we selected six typical pairs of Miscanthus samples that presented different cell wall compositions, and then compared their cellulose crystallinity and biomass digestibility after various chemical pretreatments. Results A Miscanthus sample with a high hemicelluloses level was determined to have a relatively low cellulose crystallinity index (CrI) and enhanced biomass digestibility at similar rates after pretreatments of NaOH and H 2 SO 4 with three concentrations. By contrast, a Miscanthus sample with a high cellulose or lignin level showed increased CrI and low biomass saccharification, particularly after H 2 SO 4 pretreatment. Correlation analysis revealed that the cellulose CrI negatively affected biomass digestion. Increased hemicelluloses level by 25% or decreased cellulose and lignin contents by 31% and 37% were also found to result in increased hexose yields by 1.3-times to 2.2-times released from enzymatic hydrolysis after NaOH or H 2 SO 4 pretreatments. The findings indicated that hemicelluloses were the dominant and positive factor, whereas cellulose and lignin had synergistic and negative effects on biomass digestibility. Conclusions Using six pairs of Miscanthus samples with different cell wall compositions, hemicelluloses were revealed to be the dominant factor that positively determined biomass digestibility after pretreatments with NaOH or H 2 SO 4 by negatively affecting cellulose crystallinity. The results suggested potential approaches to the genetic modifications of bioenergy crops.

The purpose of this work is to evaluate whether the iron ion-catalyzed hydrogen peroxide pretreatment (Fe-HP pretreatment) can be used as a more environmentally friendly pretreatment way for the fermentation of lignocellulose and the production of biofuel. The Fe-HP pretreatment significantly promoted the enzymatic hydrolysis/fermentation and the production of bio-jet fuels from sawdust (a typical lignocellulose biomass). Compared to the untreated sawdust, the Fe-HP pretreated sawdust showed higher sugar yield (33.8%, w/w) and higher ethanol yield (34.4%, w/w). Especially, the directional transformation of sawdust to bio-jet fuels was achieved by integrating biomass fermentation and catalytic synthesis processes. The highest ethanol conversion (94.2 C-mol %) and highest jet fuel selectivity (72.5 C-mol %) were obtained over the bi-functional catalyst (HSAPO34/NiHBET). The reactive oxygen species (ROS) in the Fe-HP pretreatment process was investigated by in-situ electron paramagnetic resonance analysis. Based on the biomass characterization, ROS analysis and intermediate analysis, the possible role and mechanism of the Fe-HP pretreatment were addressed. The iron ion catalyst can accelerate the decomposition of hydrogen peroxide to form hydroxyl radicals, and thus promoting biomass depolymerization and lignin removal (delignification of 28.9%, w/w) from lignocellulose. The Fe-HP pretreatment increased sugar yield and concentration during enzymatic hydrolysis, which was beneficial for ethanol fermentation and bio-jet fuel production.

Cellulose, especially lignocellulose, has attracted ever-increasing interest as a framework of hydrogel electrolytes in recent years due to its advantages including low cost, renewability, and biodegradability. However, lignocellulose is insoluble and gelatinous. Herein, a lignocellulose/poly(acrylic acid) dual-network hydrogel electrolyte was synthesized. The highly concentrated ZnCl2 solution was used for gelatinizing lignocellulose based on coordination bonds provided by Zn2+. At the same time, poly(acrylic acid) was introduced as the flexible network to construct ion migration channels. The double network was composed of fully physical cross-linked polymer chains that benefitted from Zn2+ coordination. In addition, water molecules were locked by highly concentrated Zn2+, endowing the obtained hydrogel environment with adaptability and an inhibited water electrolysis activity. Thus, the assembled supercapacitor could reach a satisfactory operation voltage (1.6 V) and areal capacitance (485.3 mF/cm2 at 0.2 mA/cm2) and high energy density (172.6 μWh/cm2), along with long-term cyclic stability (82.3% retention after 8000 cycles). Accordingly, this work provided a practicable design strategy for lignocellulose hydrogels toward high-performance flexible solid electrolytes.

This study investigates a one-step process for the simultaneous separation of cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignin from lignocellulosic biomass using γ-valerolactone (GVL)/H 2 O pretreatment, which also converts hemicellulose to furfural (FF). A response surface methodology (RSM) was applied to optimize the process parameters. Under optimal conditions (163 °C for 1.5 h), the maximum FF yield reached 85.36 %, and cellulose purity was 80.80 %. The extracted GVL-lignin was characterized as low-molecular-weight guaiacyl-syringyl (G-S) type nanospheres with significant antioxidant activity. The conversion of hemicellulose to FF was enhanced by the synergistic interaction of Lewis acid (MgCl 2 ) and Brønsted acid (H 2 SO 4 ), which promoted the isomerization of xylose and dehydration to FF. The high-purity cellulose yielded 18.87 g/L ethanol through separate hydrolysis and fermentation (SHF), 27 times higher than untreated solids. Additionally, GVL exhibited consistent performance in lignocellulose separation after six cycles. This method offers an efficient and sustainable approach to valorize lignocellulosic biomass, advancing the production of high-value products.

The high value transformation of renewable lignocellulose is crucial for reducing carbon emissions and promoting sustainable development. This effort aims to demonstrate that bio-based cresol (an important high-value chemical) can be yielded from lignocellulosic biomass. This novel directed conversion was effectuated by coupling catalytic pyrolysis of lignocellulose into aromatic intermediates and catalytic hydroxylation of aromatic intermediates into bio-based cresol. We also developed a highly active and recyclable magnetic catalyst (Cu 0 -CuFe 2 O 4 @Biochar(HTR)), confirming that introducing Cu 0 into the copper-iron composite metal oxide catalyst promotes hydroxyl radicals formation and the synthesis of bio-based cresol. The Cu 0 -CuFe 2 O 4 @Biochar(HTR) catalyst exhibited high cresol selectivity (81.1 %) and high cresol yield (54.3 %) in catalytic hydroxylation of aromatic intermediates into bio-based cresol. Based on catalyst characterizations and hydroxyl radicals analysis, the presumable reaction mechanism related to the bio-based cresol synthesis was proposed. Potentially, this strategy may provide a beneficial pathway for developing high-value bio-based chemical (cresol) using renewable lignocellulosic biomass.

Xylans are the major hemicelluloses in grasses, but their effects on biomass saccharification remain unclear. In this study, we examined the 79 representative Miscanthus accessions that displayed a diverse cell wall composition and varied biomass digestibility . Correlation analysis showed that hemicelluloses level has a strong positive effect on lignocellulose enzymatic digestion after NaOH or H 2 SO 4 pretreatment. Characterization of the monosaccharide compositions in the KOH-extractable and non-KOH-extractable hemicelluloses indicated that arabinose substitution degree of xylan is the key factor that positively affects biomass saccharification. The xylose/arabinose ratio after individual enzyme digestion revealed that the arabinose in xylan is partially associated with cellulose in the amorphous regions, which negatively affects cellulose crystallinity for high biomass digestibility. The results provide insights into the mechanism of lignocellulose enzymatic digestion upon pretreatment, and also suggest a goal for the genetic modification of hemicelluloses towards the bioenergy crop breeding of Miscanthus and grasses.

The rapid advancement of communication technology has led to issues of electromagnetic radiation, while the use of high-power electronic devices introduces potential fire hazards, threatening lives and property. Integrating flame retardancy, fire alarm functionality, and efficient electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding into a single lightweight material remains a significant challenge. Here, we propose a biomimetic flame-retardant tourmaline/MXene lignocellulose hybrid aerogel (TMLA-D) with vertical channels using the liquid nitrogen directional freeze-casting method, which possesses both a heat-sensitive fire alarm response function and electromagnetic shielding capability. Compared to lignocellulose aerogel, the heat release rate and total heat release of TMLA-D are reduced by 48.42% and 23.28%, respectively. The limiting oxygen index is significantly enhanced by 47.69%. Upon flame exposure, its heat-sensitive response rapidly generates a potential difference exceeding 100 mV, actively triggering an alarm and extending a bulb’s operation time by 220% in a demonstration. Furthermore, the conductive network formed by MXene provides an electrical conductivity of 19.5 S m⁻¹ , resulting in an efficient electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding effectiveness of 22 dB. The vertically aligned structure enhances EMI shielding effectiveness by establishing a continuous reflection-absorption pathway for electromagnetic waves. These properties indicate that the TMLA-D has excellent flame retardant, fire warning and electromagnetic shielding capabilities, thus offering a feasible solution for fire alarm systems. Synopsis This aerogel offers sustainable advantages through its biomass-derived lignocellulose base and multifunctional design that reduces material consumption.

The depolymerization and upgrading of lignin from raw biomass, while keeping cellulose intact is important in biorefinery and various metal-based catalysts have been used in reductive catalytic fractionation, a key method in “lignin-first” strategy. Recently, we found that a core–shell structured Co@CoO catalyst with CoO shell as the real active site had excellent performance in the hydrogenolysis of 5-hydromethylfurfural to 2,5-dimethylfuran due to its unique ability to dissociate H 2 and yield active H δ− species (Xiang et al., 2022). In this work, we report a one-pot depolymerization and upgrading of lignocellulose to alkylcyclohexanols, a flavour precursor, with intact cellulose over this unique core–shell structured catalyst, Co@CoO. Lignin model compounds (β-O-4, 4-O-5, α-O-4) were first used to clarify the activity of Co@CoO catalyst. Then, the one-pot conversion of various organosolv lignin (birch, pine and poplar) to alkylcyclohexanols was realized with the mass yield of alkylcyclohexanols up to 25.8 wt% from birch lignin under the reaction condition of 210 °C, 1 MPa H 2 , 16 h. Finally, the corresponding woody sawdusts were used as feedstocks and found that the Co@CoO catalyst indeed preferentially depolymerized and upgraded the lignin part and obtained the same alkylcyclohexanols products with the retention of cellulose-rich pulp. The collected alkylcyclohexanols were further esterified to obtain value-added esters, which can be used as flavors. This work will inspire the design of new efficient metal oxide catalysts in lignin fractionation and depolymerization to high-value-added chemicals with intact cellulose.

Acid treatment is the key to improve the physicochemical properties of metal-lignocellulosic hybrid, thus contributing to the catalytic performance for catalytic transfer hydrogenation (CTH) of carbonyl compounds to their corresponding alcohols. Herein, a series of organic acids were introduced to assist the design of Zr- Pennisetum sinese hybrid. Comprehensive studies demonstrated the dramatic changes of specific surface and acid/base sites of the prepared hybrid. Remarkably, formic acid-assisted Zr@ PS -FA possessed the largest surface area and enhanced interaction effects between acids (Lewis acid and Brønsted acid) and Lewis base sites, which exhibited excellent catalytic activity for CTH of levulinic acid to γ-valerolactone with a high yield of 95.6% in isopropanol under moderate reaction conditions (180 °C and 1.5 h). Zr@ PS -FA also showed remarkable cycle stability, and it could be consecutively used at least six runs without a significant loss in catalytic activity. More gratifyingly, Zr@ PS -FA displayed a superior universality for CTH of various carbonyl compounds to their corresponding alcohols, demonstrating great potential for upgrading biomass-derived aldehydes/ketones.
