Activated carbon-supported nano zero-valent iron (nZVI@AC) for enhanced peracetic acid activation in Fenton-like degradation of sulfamethoxazole

Sichu Xing,Chundi Zhou,Minghao Sui

This study presented a novel nano zero-valent iron anchored on activated carbon (nZVI@AC) catalyst, designed to overcome the inherent aggregation and oxidation limitations of bare nZVI. The nZVI@AC composite exhibited high catalytic activity for peracetic acid (PAA) activation, achieving complete degradation of sulfamethoxazole (SMX) within 10 min ( k obs = 0.3171 min -1 ). Characterizations confirmed that the AC support significantly enhanced electron transfer and increased the electron-donating capacity. This maximized exposure of active Fe 2+ species, which was crucial for efficient PAA activation and reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation. Radical quenching, electron paramagnetic resonance, and probe experiments identified hydroxyl radicals, singlet oxygen ( 1 O 2 ), and acetylperoxyl radicals as the primary ROS, with 1 O 2 playing the dominant role. The nZVI@AC/PAA system demonstrated remarkable stability and practical viability. This work established nZVI@AC as an efficient, stable, and versatile catalyst for PAA-based advanced oxidation processes, offering promising potential for water remediation applications.

Effect of nanoscale zero-valent iron (nZVI) on performance and microbial succession in anaerobic sludge under prolonged exposure to chloroxylenol

Jingwei Wang,Shuang Shan,Jihong Song,Da Li,Qiao Ma,Shuzhen Li

With the expanding use of antibacterial and disinfection products, chloroxylenol (para-chloro-meta-xylenol, PCMX) has been detected in various environments, especially in sewage treatment plants. However, the influence of PCMX has received limited attention, with only sporadic studies available. Over a period of 110 days, efforts were undertaken to restore the performance of PCMX-affected anaerobic sludge through the addition of nanoscale zero-valent iron (nZVI) and the reduction of PCMX concentration. nZVI addition promoted COD removal efficiency under a high PCMX concentration (50.0 mg L−1, GH) and accelerated the anaerobic digestion process under a low PCMX concentration (0.5 mg L−1, GL). The slow recovery in GH highlighted the difficulty in restoring the functionality of municipal anaerobic sludge under the prolonged influence of high PCMX concentrations. Microbial communities exhibited distinct succession patterns under different treatments. nZVI demonstrated efficacy in mitigating the decline in microbial richness induced by PCMX. Shannon and Pielou evenness and niche breadth increased as the PCMX concentration decreased, suggesting an enhanced restorative capacity of the microbial community when alleviating the stress imposed by PCMX. Bacteroidetes, Proteobacteria, Actinobacteria, Firmicutes, and Chloroflexi were predominant functional phyla in the anaerobic digestion process. Olsenella, Rectinema, Desulfovibrio, Azonexus, and Methanobacterium were key genera responding to nZVI and PCMX. PCMX markedly diminished community resistance and resilience, while nZVI mitigated the damage of PCMX on community stability. Altogether, this study contributes to a better understanding of the performance and microbial succession in anaerobic sludge through the addition of nZVI and variations in PCMX concentration.

Pomelo peel biochar supported nZVI@Bi0 as a persulfate activator for the degradation of acetaminophen: Enhanced performance and degradation mechanism

Cui Lai,Neng Wang,Fuhang Xu,Mingming Zhang,Danlian Huang,Dengsheng Ma,Xuerong Zhou,Mengyi Xu,Ling Li,Huchuan Yan,Xiuqin Huo

Due to the contradiction between superior reaction kinetics and imperfect reproducibility of nanoscale zero-valent iron (nZVI) in persulfate oxidation systems, how to improve the reusability of nZVI while highly guaranteeing efficiency is an important but challenging matter. Hence, we took a hydrothermal-assisted carbon reduction to synthesize nZVI encapsulated with Bi being loaded on pomelo peel biochar (nZVI@Bi 0 /PPBC), and the results indicated that the presence of Bi could improve the reproducibility of nZVI and facilitate the removal of acetaminophen (ACE) in the persulfate (PDS) system. The degradation rate constant of the nZVI@Bi 0 /PPBC 800 composite for ACE was approximately 1.5 times higher than that of the nZVI/PPBC 800 . nZVI exhibited synergistic effects with Bi on PDS activation through electron transfer . Interestingly, the Bi(0) became increasingly pure as the pyrolysis temperature increased, and the catalytic performance of ZVI@Bi 0 /PPBC became better. In addition,   electron spin resonance and quenching experiments revealed that 1 O 2 and O 2 · − were the predominant reactive oxygen species in nZVI@Bi 0 /PPBC/PDS system.   The nZVI@Bi 0 /PPBC/PDS system showed excellent oxidation ability across a broad pH range (3.0–9.0) and resisted interference from certain anions. This work reveals the possible role of Bi(0) in nZVI based PDS system, and provides an idea for the protection of nZVI.

Synergistic Removal of U (VI), Pb(II), and HA on nZVI/MoS2 Composites Investigated by Batch, Spectroscopic, and Modeling Techniques

Alhadi Ishag,Weiyu Zhu,Yanxue Yue,Rongbo Hou,Bo Zhang,Yubing Sun

The simultaneous adsorption of U(VI), Pb(II), and humic acid (HA) in water solutions on a nanoscale zerovalent iron/molybdenum disulfide (nZVI/MoS2) composite was investigated using batch, spectroscopic, and modeling techniques. An increased removal of U(VI) and Pb(II) and a gradual decrease in HA removal on nZVI/MoS2 was observed with increasing pH from 2.0 to 7.0. The adsorption capacities of U(VI), Pb(II), and HA under ternary systems were 57.72, 40.43, and 55.43 mg/g (298 K, pH 4.0), respectively. In addition, nZVI/MoS2 exhibited good regeneration due to the high surface area and uniform distribution of nZVI. The interaction mechanism was demonstrated to be inner-sphere surface complexation by XPS analysis and surface complexation modeling (SCM). The presence of Pb(II) and HA inhibited U(VI) reduction into U(IV) by nZVI according to XPS analysis; meanwhile, two inner-sphere complexation reactions (weak and strong sites) rather than redox reactions were demonstrated by SCM. These findings showed that nZVI/MoS2 could be used as an efficient adsorbent for the high elimination of radionuclides, heavy metals, and organics in actual compound pollution of wastewater.

Magnetic nanocomposite microbial extracellular polymeric substances@Fe3O4 supported nZVI for Sb(V) reduction and adsorption under aerobic and anaerobic conditions

Jixian Yang,Lu Zhou,Fang Ma,Heping Zhao,Fengxia Deng,Shanshan Pi,Aiqi Tang,Ang Li

The extracellular polymeric substances coating magnetic powders-supported nano zero-valent iron (nZVI@EPS@Fe 3 O 4 ) was synthesized, using reduction and adsorption to treat Sb(V) wastewater. The adsorption performance and mechanism were investigated under aerobic and anaerobic conditions. The adsorption capacity of nZVI@EPS@Fe 3 O 4 (79.56 mg/g at pH = 5) was improved compared to that of the original materials (60.74 mg/g). The spectral analysis shows that both nZVI and EPS@Fe 3 O 4 in nZVI@EPS@Fe 3 O 4 played an important role in reducing Sb(V) to Sb(III) and adsorbing Sb. The reducibility and adsorption capacity of nZVI@EPS@Fe 3 O 4 towards Sb(V) remained strong under aerobic condition (62% Sb(III), 79.56 mg/g), although they were slightly weaker than those under anaerobic condition (74% Sb(III), 91.78 mg/g). nZVI@EPS@Fe 3 O 4 showed good performance in regeneration experiments. nZVI@EPS@Fe 3 O 4 is promising as a cost-effective and highly efficient material for Sb(V)-contaminated water. This study is meaningful in understanding the redox behaviour of nZVI composites in aerobic and anaerobic conditions.

Mutual effect of U(VI) and phosphate on the reactivity of nanoscale zero-valent iron (nZVI) for their co-removal

Huiling Zheng,Xuemei Ren,Xiaodong Zhang,Gang Song,Diyun Chen,Changlun Chen

Nanoscale zero-valent iron (nZVI) has been widely considered as a promising permeable barrier material for remediating U(VI)-contaminated waters. Little information is available regarding co-removal of U(VI) and oxyanion contaminants by nZVI, yet in the majority of areas polluted by U(VI), co-existence of phosphate is found to be common especially in eutrophic water. Herein, the mutual influence of U(VI) and phosphate on the effectiveness of nZVI in co-removing U(VI) and phosphate is investigated by macroscopic and microscopic approach. The results indicate that nZVI can effectively co-remove U(VI) and phosphate and the processes intensively depend on the solution pH and the additional order due to the formation of nZVI-U(VI)-phosphate complexes and will change the morphology of nZVI through the formation of a new phase. Furthermore, the maximum removal capacity of nZVI increases by 21.63% at pH 6.0 for U(VI) ions and by 34.28% at pH 7.0 for phosphate when both U(VI) and phosphate are present simultaneously. In short, the co-presence of U(VI) and phosphate has a great impact on the reactivity and morphology of nZVI. The findings will be beneficial to broaden the potential feasibility of nZVI in simultaneous radionuclide and phosphate pollution cleanup.

Green construction of MBI corrosion-resistant interfaces modified NZVI@MOFs-regulated 3D PAN cryogel film to enhance Cr(VI) removal

Kaini Yang,Xiangyu Wang,Iseult Lynch,Zhiling Guo,Peng Zhang,Lisi Wu

Nano zero-valent iron (NZVI) is an ideal material for treating chromium (VI). However, the NZVI's low loading and corrosion susceptibility in acidic Cr-containing industrial wastewater is the most pressing issue. Therefore, it is necessary to explore a method to construct novel NZVI composites with high loading, corrosion resistance, and outstanding activity. In this study, green 2-mercaptobenzimidazole (MBI) was employed for the first time as a corrosion inhibitor for NZVI to form a protective coating through chemisorption, thus blocking the corrosion of NZVI by reaction medium. Meanwhile, a novel multiphase green crystallization-assisted pore formation freeze-drying method was constructed to synthesize UiO-66-NH 2 regulated 3D network porous polyacrylonitrile (PAN) cryogel film for stabilizing NZVI, which is intended to remove Cr(VI) effectively and without secondary contamination. The synthesized MBI-Fe 0 @MOF/PAN possessed prominent activity, corrosion resistance, and considerable NZVI loading (45.9 mg/g). The Cr(VI) removal could still reach 82.7 % after 6 cycles, and the level of total dissolved iron ions was lowered to 0.255 mg/L. MBI-Fe 0 @MOF/PAN for rapid removal of Cr(VI) may be ascribed to the synergistic reaction of rapid protonation of MBI and strong reduction of NZVI. This study constructed the MBI corrosion-resistant interface and 3D PAN cryogel film concepts not only to broaden the horizons of designing efficient NZVI catalytic materials but also to promote the development of treatment technologies for acidic Cr-containing industrial wastewater.

Ligand-citric acid enhanced in-situ ROS generation by GBC@nZVI to promote the aerobic degradation of adsorbed 2,4-dichlorophenol

Chengfang Zhang,Dong Wang,Qinglong Liu,Jingchun Tang

Nanoscale zero-valent iron (nZVI) can react with molecular oxygen to produce reactive oxygen species, but very low yield limits its widespread use. In this study, the effect of ligand-citric acid (CA) addition on the dissolved oxygen (DO) activation for in-situ generation of ROS and subsequent 2,4-DCP degradation by graphene carbon layer coated nZVI composites (GBC@nZVI) was systematically investigated. It was found that the introduction of CA significantly increased the ROS production and resulted in the generation of OH, O 2 − and 1 O 2 with values of 2.1, 2.3, and 1.5 times higher than that in systems without CA, respectively. Ligand CA could enhance the degradation of adsorbed 2,4-DCP over a wide pH range. The CA addition resulted in a significant increase in the degradation of 2,4-DCP from 40.8 % to 79.9 % and a significant decrease in the adsorption from 51.1 % to 19.1 % compared to the system without CA. This phenomenon can be attributed to the fact that the incorporation of CA promoted the efficient recycling of Fe(II)/Fe(III) in the surface-bound state from the iron oxide film on the GBC@nZVI which enhanced the generation of interfacial ROS using DO, and further facilitated the degradation of adsorbed 2,4-DCP rather than immobilization by adsorption alone. On the other hand, the formation of Fe(Ⅲ)-CA complexes with high stability provides enough soluble Fe(II) to produce more ROS in solution via the oxygen reduction. Furthermore, the graphene carbon layer is able to act as an electron conductor to promote the efficient transfer of electrons except to inhibiting the rapid oxidation of Fe 0 . The study not only reveals the promotion effect of ligand-CA addition on the in-situ generation of ROS from nZVI activated dissolved oxygen, but also provides a simple and green strategy for the removal of electron-rich aromatic pollutants from water pollution.

Three-dimensional graphene anchored nZVI hybrid MnO2 as a dissolved oxygen activated Fenton-like catalyst for efficient mineralization of oxytetracycline

Yujia Yang,Huiyi Shen,Lejin Xu

This work is dedicated to achieving the high mineralization efficiency of oxytetracycline (OTC) in a dissolved oxygen (DO) activated Fenton-like system by constructing a catalyst with unique catalytic performance. Three-dimensional graphene anchored nZVI hybrid MnO 2 (3D-rGO@nZVI/MnO 2 ) with layered and porous structures was synthesized and characterized by field emission scanning electron microscopy coupled with an energy dispersive spectrometer (SEM-EDS), Brunner-Emmet-Teller (BET) analysis, X-ray diffraction (XRD) measurement and Raman spectroscopy. The experimental results showed that the removal efficiency of OTC could reach 100.0% with outstanding TOC decrease of 84.0% at natural pH in the 3D-rGO@nZVI/MnO 2 -DO system. Moreover, negligible harmful intermediates were detected by ultra-performance liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (UPLC-MS) after the reaction in the 3D-rGO@nZVI/MnO 2 -DO system. Reactive oxygen species (ROSs) detection, electrochemical measurements and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis confirmed that the elimination mechanism of OTC was the unique catalytic degradation caused by the synergism of •OH and 1 O 2 . The unprecedented synchronous generation of •OH and 1 O 2 by DO activation provides an innovative strategy for further exploration of Fenton-like system toward more effective degradation of organic pollutants.

Optimizing the removal of nitrate from aqueous solutions via reduced graphite oxide–supported nZVI: synthesis, characterization, kinetics, and reduction mechanism

Pu Shengyan,Deng Daili,Wang Kexin,Wang Miaoting,Zhang Ying,Shangguan Lixiang,Chu Wei

Graphene has been considered an ideal absorbent and excellent carrier for nanoparticles. Reduced graphite oxide (rGO)–supported nanoscale zero-valent iron (nZVI@rGO) is an effective material for removing nitrate from water. nZVI@rGO nanocomposites were prepared by a liquid-phase reduction method and then applied for nitrate-nitrogen (NO 3 − -N) removal in aqueous solution under anaerobic conditions. The experimental results showed that the stability and activity of the nZVI@rGO nanocomposites were enhanced compared with those of nZVI. The influence of the reaction conditions, including the initial concentration of NO 3 − -N, coexisting anions, initial pH of the solution, and water temperature, on NO 3 − -N removal was also investigated by batch experiments. In a neutral or slightly alkaline environment, 90% of NO 3 − -N at a concentration less than 50 mg/L could be removed within 1 h, and nitrogen production was approximately 15%. The process of NO 3 − -N removal by nZVI@rGO fits well with different reaction kinetics. In addition, magnetite was the main oxidation product. RGO-supported nZVI might become a promising filler in the permeable reactive barrier process for groundwater remediation.

Comprehensive understanding of adsorption and reduction on 2,4-DCP and Cr(VI) removal process by NZVI-rGO: Performance and mechanism

Qi Jing,Wenhui You,Shuo Qiao,Yuheng Ma,Zhongyu Ren

In this study, nano zero-valent iron-reduced graphene oxide (NZVI-rGO) was successfully synthesized and applied for 2,4-DCP and Cr (VI) removal. Characterization results show that NZVI particles were successfully loaded on rGO nanosheets increasing the dispersibility of particles. Removal experiments indicate that the existence of rGO significantly enhanced the removal efficiency of 2,4-DCP and Cr (VI) compared with bare nano zero-valent iron. The removal rate of 2,4-DCP and Cr(VI) increased from 33.24 % and 63.14 % to 100 % and 98.40 %, respectively. Pseudo-second-order model and Langmuir isotherm model could better explain the 2,4-DCP removal process. The removal mechanism of 2,4-DCP in the process of simultaneous removal is adsorption, including π-π interaction, hydrogen bonding and n-π EDA interaction between Cr(VI) and 2,4-DCP. Cr(VI) is firstly fixed on the surface of NZVI-rGO by electrostatic interaction. The electrostatic interaction between γ-FeOOH and Cr(VI) and the strong connection formed by n-π EDA interaction between Cr(VI) and 2,4-DCP promote the adsorption of Cr(VI) in coexisting system. Subsequently, Cr(VI) is reduced to Cr(III) by accepting the electrons donated by NZVI, and Cr(III) interacts with OH − in the solution to generate Cr(OH) 3 precipitate. The existence of rGO accelerates the rate of electron transfer to Cr(VI) in NZVI. This study provides theoretical support for remediation of combined pollution of chlorinated organics and heavy metals.

Synergistic removal of Cr(VI) by S-nZVI and organic acids: The enhanced electron selectivity and pH-dependent promotion mechanisms

Yibo Yuan,Xipeng Wei,Hua Yin,Minghan Zhu,Haoyu Luo,Zhi Dang

The effects of organic acids on hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) removal by reduced iron-based materials have been extensively studied. Nevertheless, the promotion mechanism from the perspective of the electron transfer process is still unclear. Herein, sulfidated nanoscale zero-valent iron (S-nZVI) and the selected organic acids, citric acid (containing both -OH and −COOH groups) and oxalic acid (containing only −COOH groups), showed significant synergistic promotion effects in Cr(VI) removal. The FeS and FeS 2 on S-nZVI surface could enhance the Cr(VI) reduction as the reductive entity and electron conductor. Furthermore, even though the reactivity of FeS with Cr(VI) is higher than that with FeS 2 , the Cr(VI) removal efficiency by FeS 2 was much higher than that by FeS with organic acids. Under neutral and alkaline conditions (pH 6.0–8.0), organic acids promoted the diffusion, adsorption and complexation of Cr(VI) on S-nZVI surface, thus enhancing the electron selectivity towards Cr(VI). However, when the solution pH changed to acidic conditions (pH 4.0), organic acids facilitated the dissolution of Fe(II) ions from S-nZVI and enhanced the electron utilization towards Cr(VI) via the fast Fe(III) reduction process. This study provided a new insight into the Cr(VI) removal, which was beneficial to understand the application boundaries of S-nZVI for Cr(VI) remediation.
