MXene has a multilayer structure, which can be peeled and layered into single or multilayer nanosheets, and it possesses multiple functional groups that can be easily modified. MOF-303, a kind of metal–organic framework material, was synthesized by the solvent hydrothermal method using aluminum ion as the center metal and 3,5-pyrazole dicarboxylic acid as the organic ligand. In this paper, MOF-303 was grown in situ on Ti3C2Tx MXene to synthesize the MXene@MOF-303 composite, which combined the advantages of both MXene and MOF-303. Using the MXene@MOF-303 composite as blending fillers and a polyacrylonitrile (PAN) ultrafiltration (UF) membrane as the substrate, an MXene@MOF-303/poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA)/PAN composite membrane was fabricated. The composites and membranes were characterized by FTIR, XRD, SEM, and the pervaporation desalination of the composite membrane was also tested. The experimental results showed that the incorporation of MXene@MOF-303 composites improved the separation performance of the PVA membrane. The MXene@MOF-303/PVA/PAN composite membrane, loaded with 0.5 wt % of MXene@MOF-303, achieved a high flux of 15.87 kg·m–2·h–1 and a rejection of 99.84% when desalinating 3.5 wt % NaCl solution at 35 °C by pervaporation.

Achieving satisfactory separation of N, N-Dimethylformamide (DMF)/water is still challenging in industrial wastewater treatment. To address this issue, a novel method involving pervaporation (PV) separation using polyvinyl alcohol/chitosan (PVA/CS) blend films is proposed. Various characterization methods confirmed the strong compatibility between PVA and CS, and the blending improved their mechanical properties and thermal stability. Heat treatment significantly reduced the swelling degree of the membranes. In a binary aqueous system with low concentrations of DMF, controlled separation can be achieved by adjusting the blending ratio of PVA to CS. The membranes exhibited preferential selectivity for DMF when the CS content is 40–75 wt%, which allowed for the concentration and recovery of DMF. At 20 °C with a feed of 10 wt% DMF solution, 2 h heat-treated PVA/CS-50 membrane exhibited the best performance, which could be attributed to its strong hydrogen bonding force, with a total flux of 484.09 g m −2 h −1 and a separation factor of 5.41 for DMF. The PVA/CS blend membranes exhibit excellent acid and alkali resistant and are promising candidates for the separation and recovery of DMF from industrial wastewater by membrane technology.

The Co-gallate MOF membrane exhibits great potential for separating MeOH/MTBE mixtures due to its regular pore size, exceptional stability, and high hydrophilicity. Nevertheless, the rapid nucleation and growth rate of the Co-gallate crystals in the synthesis solution cause poor nucleation on the substrate surface, which presents a significant challenge for the preparation of continuous Co-gallate membranes. In this study, we presented a cobalt carbonate hydroxide nanowire array (Co-NWA)-induced strategy that enabled the rapid and defect-free synthesis of tubular Co-gallate membranes within just 1 h. The presynthesized Co-NWAs on the substrate played as nucleation centers and anchoring sites, facilitating robust membrane formation. The effects of various synthesis parameters on the crystal morphology and membrane compactness were systematically examined. The optimized Co-gallate membrane demonstrated excellent pervaporation performance, with a permeation flux of 2.03 kg m–2 h–1 and a separation factor of 6711 for a 14.3/85.7 wt % MeOH/MTBE mixture, maintaining high performance for over 100 h, indicative of its remarkable long-term stability. This Co-NWA-induced synthesis strategy presents a promising approach for the industrial-scale application of Co-gallate MOF membranes and the design of other MOF membranes, thereby advancing their utility in requisite liquid separation processes.

A covalently integrated photoinitiator, crosslinker, and PDMS backbone was developed. • An ultrafast membrane fabrication was achieved at room temperature within 400 s. • The strategy reduced photoinitiator migration by 91.02% and enhanced compatibility. • The membrane exhibited competitive PV performance for furfural separation. Photocuring demonstrates a significant potential in membrane fabrication owing to its controllable and ultra-fast manufacturing capabilities. However, the high mobility of photoinitiator (PI) and their poor compatibility with polymers not only pose risks to the human health and the environment but also lead to membrane defects, compromising the separation performance. This study presented an integrated strategy combining PI, crosslinking agents, and polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) to achieve ultra-fast fabrication of the membrane within 400 s. By increasing the molecular weight and size of the PI, its migration ratio can be significantly reduced to 0.099%. Moreover, a chemical bonding strategy was employed to substantially improve the compatibility between the PI and PDMS, resulting in a 2.7-fold increase in the separation factor compared with that of the membrane containing physically blended PI. Based on this chemical integration approach, the fabricated PDMS membrane showed superior furfural-selective pervaporation performance when fed with a 1.0 wt% furfural/water solution at 80 °C. The membrane flux was achieved to 1360 g·m –2 ·h –1 along with its separation factor of 38.5. This method provides a versatile approach for manufacturing high-quality separation membranes. A new efficient coupled process to produce green solvent ethyl propionate was developed, which involved a fixed-bed reactor and pervaporation membrane separation. Firstly, the esterification reaction alone was investigated to explore reaction conditions and kinetics. Secondly, the pervaporation alone was investigated to explore separation conditions and the separation performance of pervaporation membranes. Then, the esterification reaction, coupled with pervaporation to enhance the reaction process, was investigated. Finally, the mathematical model of the esterification reaction, coupled with the pervaporation process, was established. The results showed that the conversion of ethanol reached 78.4% within 5 h. The reaction kinetics were obtained based on the pseudo-homogeneous (PH) model. Under the condition of a circulation flow rate of 100 L/h, the influence of concentration polarization could be well overcome, and a high level of pervaporation could be achieved. The pervaporation coefficients of the four-component system were obtained based on Fick’s law. The dehydration rate increased significantly with the increase in pervaporation temperature, which could effectively enhance the esterification reaction. The model could well predict the experimental results, and the experimental results were in good agreement with the theoretical calculations.

Herein, the long-term stability of poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA)-based pervaporation membranes in desalinating seawater reverse osmosis (SWRO) brine was investigated. A commercial PVA/polyacrylonitrile (PAN) composite membrane was evaluated using synthetic seawater. During desalination, the water flux and permeate conductivity decreased and increased, respectively, with notable salt scaling observed within the membrane substrate. Similar trends were observed when treating real SWRO brine, although salt scaling within the substrate was more severe. To mitigate salt-scaling-induced deterioration in desalination performance, a hydrophobic polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) substrate was selected as the support layer for fabricating a PVA/PTFE composite membrane, which was then applied to SWRO brine desalination. Although the water flux decreased during operation, the permeate conductivity remained constant, with negligible scaling within the substrate. These findings demonstrated that the PVA/PTFE composite membrane exhibits better performance and longer-term stability than the commercial PVA/PAN composite membrane for treating SWRO brine.

graphene oxide (GO), thiosemicarbazide (TSC) and polyamide (PA) are cross-linked for desalination treatment • The GO/TSC/PA composite membrane exhibits high desalination performance (>99.5%) towards shale gas wastewater • The GO/TSC/PA composite membrane shows good stability after 5-cycled operation The high salinity of shale gas wastewater (abbreviated as SGW) renders it exceptionally challenging for conventional wastewater treatment. This study used graphene oxide (GO) nanosheets as an effective filtration layer and porous ceramic as a substrate for SGW desalination. To enhance the stability between the GO layer and the ceramic and simultaneously mitigate GO swelling, polyamide (PA) and thiosemicarbazide (TSC) were both introduced as cross-linkers. Results indicated that the as-prepared GO/TSC/PA composite membrane exhibited high stability during the pervaporation desalination process, primarily due to the introduction of amino groups. Under optimized conditions, the GO/TSC/PA composite membrane achieved a maximum water flux of 4.87 L/(m 2 ·h) and a highest salt rejection efficiency exceeding 99.50%. The precise ionic composition and concentrations of the SGW were analyzed, and the removal rate for each ion was also determined. This study provides a novel approach for preparing GO-based membranes to address the challenges of industrial wastewater desalination. Designing stable, high-performance two-dimensional (2D) MnO 2 membranes for pervaporation (PV) desalination remains challenging. Herein, we present a photoinduced surface passivation strategy for the controlled growth of ultrathin single-layer δ-MnO 2 nanosheets, combined with layer-by-layer assembly to fabricate robust PV membranes. The e − / h + dual-path mechanism of photoinduced synthesis of MnO 2 was firstly proposed. Comprehensive structural characterizations and DFT simulations reveal that h + drives surface passivation stabilizes the thermodynamic configuration, while e − modulating growth kinetics to achieve narrow lateral size distributions of nanosheets. Moreover, the process generates Mn 3+ states (Mn (III) ≈ 49.96 %), abundant oxygen vacancies and surface hydroxyls, imparting exceptional hydrophilicity (water contact angle ≈ 10°) and enabling ultrafast water transport through the 2D channels during PV. The resulting MnO 2 membranes exhibit nearly complete salt rejection (99.9 %) and an impressive water flux of 36.53 kg m −2 h −1 in high-salinity feeds, outperforming state-of-the-art membranes. This work establishes photoinduced facet passivation as an effective route for precision-controlled growth of 2D nanosheets, opening promising avenues for next-generation PV membranes and other water purification technologies in harsh environments.

High-performance pervaporation membranes play a crucial role in the separation of biobutanol. Graphene oxide (GO) shows remarkable potential in membrane separation applications due to its tunable interlayer channel, good hydrophilicity and excellent surface modifiability. However, the narrow d-spacing between GO layers and the weak interlayer interaction forces impose limitations on its application in alcohol permselective pervaporation. Herein, porous graphene oxide (PGO) was prepared via etching of the surface functional groups. Subsequently, 4-dodecylaniline was covalently grafted with PGO nanosheets to fabricate C12H-PGO/PEBA mixed matrix membranes (MMMs) featuring in-plane and interlayer dual transport channels. The introduction of long alkyl chains not only enlarges the d-spacing of PGO and augments its hydrophobicity but also bolsters the mechanical integrity of the framework. At 40°C, the 1 wt% C12H-PGO/PEBA membrane exhibited a 25.4% increase in separation factor and a 106.9% improvement in permeation flux compared to the pristine PEBA membrane. In addition, the adsorption and diffusion behaviors of GO/PEBA, PGO/PEBA, and C12H-PGO/PEBA were investigated using Grand Canonical Monte Carlo (GCMC) and Molecular Dynamics (MD) simulations. The results reveal that C12H-PGO incorporation enhances affinity toward butanol molecules while suppresses water diffusion, accounting for the improved separation performance. This microstructural modification strategy of GO paves the way for the development of novel butanol pervaporation membrane.

Hybrid membranes were fabricated with active layers composed of polydimethyl siloxane (PDMS) and metal organic framework MIL-101 (Cr), together with support layers composed of polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF). Transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and nitrogen adsorption were used to study the structure of MIL-101 (Cr) particles; scanning electron microscopy (SEM), infrared spectrum (IR), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), thermomechanical analysis and positron anihilation lifetime spectroscopy (PALS) were employed to characterize the structural morphology, free volume property, thermal and mechanical features of the membranes. The effect of MIL-101 (Cr) incorporation on swelling and pervaporation performance of the hybrid membranes were evaluated with thiophene and n -octane mixture as model gasoline. The packing of PDMS chains was interrupted by MIL-101 (Cr), thus the fractional free volume was increased. Accordingly, the separation performance including permeation flux and selectivity was increased remarkably. The optimal performance was achieved when the weight fraction of MIL-101 to PDMS was 6% with a flux of 5.2 kg·m −2 h −1 (increased by 136% compared with the PDMS control membrane) and an enrichment factor of 5.6 (increased by 38% compared with the PDMS control membrane).

Good separation performance NaY zeolite membrane was successfully prepared on the tubular mullite support by fluoride-containing precursor synthesis gel. The fluoride source had a great influence on NaY zeolite membrane growth and separation performance for EtOH/ETBE mixture, the NaF containing precursor gel was benefit for preparing high Si/Al ratio, fine reproduction quality and long-term stable NaY zeolite membrane. Solid state 19 F MAS NMR characterization results indicated that the fluorine existed in the channel of NaY zeolite crystals. Both flux and separation factor of the NaY zeolite membrane were greatly depended on the separation temperature and composition of EtOH/ETBE mixtures. The NaY zeolite membrane presented eminent long-term stability for separating 20 wt% EtOH/ETBE mixture at 60 °C, even if the test time was prolonged to 80 h, the flux and separation factor were kept 1.30 kg m −2 h −1 and 1100.

To improve the membrane’s anti-swelling and anti-mechanical damage properties, one polypropylene (PP) membrane was integrated into the conventional dual-layer polydimethylsiloxane/polyamide (PDMS/PA) membrane, forming a new sandwich structure PP/PDMS/PA composite membrane with better durability during the ethanol separation from the practical fermentation broth. In the sandwich structure, the top PP layer protected the fragile layer, PDMS layer, which was inlaid outside the PDMS/PA membrane, from being directly exposed to the fermentation broth and the external mechanical damage. The middle PDMS layer was the separation layer and glued the PP and PA layers together. The bottom PA layer was the supportive layer. The swellings of the PP/PDMS/PA membrane in water, ethanol, and fermentation broth were decreased by 21, 6, and 17%, respectively, compared with those of the PDMS/PA membrane. The tensile strength, Young’s modulus, breaking strength, and anti-impact property of the PP/PDMS/PA membrane were increased by 223, 18, 724, and 196%, respectively.
