2,2,4,6,6-Pentamethylheptane (iso-dodecane) is the primary component of alcohol-to-jet synthetic paraffinic kerosene and also plays a crucial role as an iso-alkane component in jet fuel surrogates. However, there is limited availability of pyrolysis studies on iso-dodecane and its kinetic model requires improvement. In this study, the pyrolysis and oxidation experiments of iso-dodecane were conducted using a flow reactor combined with on-line gas chromatographic (GC) and GC - mass spectrometry (MS) to obtain the mole fraction profiles of species. Based on the obtained experimental data, a new kinetic model for iso-dodecane was developed and validated, demonstrating superior predictive performance compared to the literature models. The rate of production analysis and sensitivity analysis were performed to elucidate the high temperature reaction mechanisms of iso-dodecane. The primary decomposition of iso-dodecane in pyrolysis occurs through unimolecular decomposition channel (U-D) and H-abstraction channel (H-A). The U-D reaction XC 12 H 26 = TC 4 H 9 + IC8–5R governs the fuel's reactivity in pyrolysis. Furthermore, a pyrolysis experiment was conducted for n-dodecane under identical conditions to those employed for iso-dodecane pyrolysis, allowing for a comparison between the two fuels based on the experimental data and modeling analysis. Iso-dodecane exhibits higher pyrolysis reactivity than n-dodecane due to its stronger ability in U-D. The new model was also validated by the ignition delay times from the literature.

The design of nitrogen-doped hierarchical porous carbons (NPCs) with unique physicochemical properties has progressively become a pressing work on account of requirement that next-generation supercapacitors possess higher energy storage capacity. Nitrogen-doped hierarchical porous carbons are fabricated by one-step pyrolysis of chitosan hydrogels with in-situ growing hydroxyapatite templates.
During the pyrolysis, the carbonization and activation can be completed simultaneously to create abundant of micropores, mesopores and macropores. Meanwhile nitrogen is introduced into the hierarchical porous carbons to boost its electrochemical properties. The optimized NPC-MHK with the high surface area of 2165.5 m 2 g −1 exhibits a favorable specific gravimetric capacitance of 306.4 F g −1 and cycling stability with 93.0% of capacitance retention after 10 000 cycles in the 6 M KOH electrolyte. In addition, the assembled NPC-MHK// NPC-MHK symmetric supercapacitors are effective to support the light-emitting diodes. This simple and environmental-friendly strategy has universal significance in fabricating heteroatom-doped hierarchical porous carbons on a vast scale for advanced energy storage and conversion devices.

Graphical It′s not diamond, it′s zirconia: SO 4 2− /ZrO 2 is an efficient catalyst for the production of levoglucosenone by fast pyrolysis of cellulose admixing catalysts. The optimal temperature for preparation of levoglucosenone is in the range of 320–350 °C. In the presence of the SO 4 2− /ZrO 2 , the levoglucosenone content of pyrolysis liquid is greatly increased at 335 °C compared to pure cellulose. Sulfated zirconia was employed as catalyst for fast pyrolysis of cellulose to prepare levoglucosenone (LGO), a very important anhydrosugar for organic synthesis. The yield and the selectivity of LGO were studied in a fixed-bed reactor at different temperatures and cellulose/catalyst mass ratios. The experiments of catalyst recycling were also carried out. The results displayed that from 290 to 400 °C, the liquid and solid accounted for more than 95 wt % of products, and the higher temperature led to more liquid and less solid products. The introduction of SO 4 2− /ZrO 2 could promote cellulose conversion and LGO production. The temperature had a similar effect on the yield and selectivity of LGO at different cellulose/catalyst mass ratios. The maximum yield was obtained at 335 °C. Although the structure of the parent ZrO 2 was retained after recycles, which was confirmed by X-ray diffraction and N 2 adsorption–desorption measurements, the activity of SO 4 2− /ZrO 2 could only be partially recovered by simply calcination. The catalytic activity decrease could be mainly attributed to SO 4 2− leaching, and the activity could be restored by further impregnation of H 2 SO 4 .

Myrcene, an important intermediate for the production of fine chemicals and pharmaceuticals, is mainly produced by the pyrolysis of β-pinene in the industry. The study of the direct pyrolysis of β-pinene was carried out without a catalyst and carrier gas at 573–873 K and under low pressure. In order to clarify the reaction mechanism, the primary intermediates of β-pinene pyrolysis including myrcene and limonene were also used as raw materials for further pyrolysis. The identification of some small molecules and C 10 H 16 isomers in the products proves that both decomposition reaction and ene reaction take place during the pyrolysis process. Based on the qualitative and quantitative analysis of reaction products, a reaction scheme for the pyrolysis of β-pinene was proposed. With appropriate simplification of the reaction scheme, a phenomenological kinetic model of the competitive parallel and consecutive first-order reaction was built, and exhibited good agreement with the experimental data. The activation energy ( E a ) and pre-exponential factor ( k 0 ) for each pathway were also determined.

In order to determine the cellulose pyrolysis mechanism, the difference of pyrolysis behavior among cellulose, cellobiose and glucose was investigated. The residue evolution of these three materials during pyrolysis process was originally explored. The morphology evolution shows that the color of all them changes from white to brown, and being black finally, and it is noteworthy that both the cellobiose and glucose evolve from initial powders to molten state and become puffy and porous char ultimately, while cellulose whether undergo the molten stage highly depends on the heating rate according to its residue evolution under different temperatures. Both the TG analysis of original samples and FTIR analysis of pyrolyzed residues reveal the different pyrolysis behavior of them, and the thermal stability follows the order: cellulose > cellobiose > glucose. Kinetic analysis shows that the glucose has the lowest global activation energy in pyrolysis. The products distribution results show that cellulose pyrolysis produces more non-condensable gases and less bio-oil than cellobiose and glucose. The GC–MS analysis of the bio-oil indicates that glucose bio-oil contains more 1,6-anhydro-β-d-glucofuranose than cellulose and cellobiose, while cellobiose bio-oil holds the highest content of furans compounds (furfural and 5-hydroxymethyl furfural), and cellulose bio-oil riches in levoglucosenone , cyclic ketones and low molecular weight compounds (acetic acid, hydroxyacetaldehyde, hydroxyacetone etc.). Finally, the cellulose model compounds based on the present and other work are discussed and the potential use of anhydro-oligosaccharides as a model compound in exploring the cellulose pyrolysis is suggested.

Water-insoluble pyrolytic cellulose with similar appearance to pyrolytic lignin was found in cellulose fast pyrolysis oil. The influence of pyrolysis temperature on pyrolytic cellulose was studied in a temperature range of 300–600 °C. The yield of the pyrolytic cellulose increased with temperature rising. The pyrolytic cellulose was characterized by various methods. The molecular weight distribution of pyrolytic cellulose was analyzed by gel permeation chromatography (GPC). Four molecular weight ranges were observed, and the M w of the pyrolytic cellulose varied from 3.4 × 10 3 to 1.93 × 10 5 g/mol. According to the elemental analysis (EA), the pyrolytic cellulose possessed higher carbon content and lower oxygen content than cellulose. Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) indicated that the pyrolytic cellulose underwent thermo-degradation at 127–800 °C and three mass loss peaks were observed. Detected by the pyrolysis gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (Py-GC/MS), the main pyrolysis products of the pyrolytic cellulose included saccharides, ketones, acids, furans and others. Fourier transforms infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) also demonstrated that the pyrolytic cellulose had peaks assigned to C O stretching and glycosidic bond, which agreed well with the Py-GC/MS results. The pyrolytic cellulose could be a mixture of saccharides, ketones, and their derivatives.

Rhubarb has been used as a tobacco additive recently. In order to understand the smoke emissions of herbal cigarettes with rhubarb additive, the pyrolysis of major components of rhubarb: chrysophanol and its derivatives (emodin, rhein and aloe-emodin) have been studied by synchrotron VUV photoionization mass spectrometry (SVUV-PIMS) combined with molecular-beam sampling technique. Various pyrolysis products are observed due to the different substituent groups. The main pyrolysis products of chrysophanol come from the CO and H 2 O elimination reactions. The CO, CO 2 and HCOOH elimination reactions are the primary pyrolysis processes for rhein. Besides, elimination of H 2 from aloe-emodin and loss of OH radical from both emodin and rhein also occur in the pyrolysis process. Furthermore, theoretical calculations are used to deduce the decomposition pathways and determine the geometries of pyrolysis products. Our work shows that the combination of SVUV-PIMS measurements and theoretical calculations is powerful to study pyrolysis behavior of complex organic compounds.

Ketonization of bagasse pyrolysis gas was performed over red mud-based oxides. The maximum yield of ketones in the catalytic conversion of bagasse pyrolysis gas over original red mud was 18.66% at 420 °C. To promote the oxidability of red mud and obtain a higher yield of ketones, the effect of metal oxides (CeO 2 , MnO 2 , TiO 2 , CaO, ZrO 2 ) loading and loading amount of CeO 2 on red mud on ketonization of bagasse pyrolysis gas were studied. The highest yield of ketones of 27.86% was obtained over red mud-based oxides with 40 wt% CeO 2 loading. The oxidability of the catalyst was enhanced greatly by the high loading of CeO 2 , leading to the peroxidation of acetone as the side reaction. To control the oxidability and cut costs, bimetallic oxides were loaded on red mud. The yield of ketones reached 30.12% over the composite red mud catalyst with the loading of 20 wt% CeO 2 and 20 wt% MnO 2 . The rough coating of MnO 2 on the surface of red mud was beneficial to the loading of CeO 2 , resulting in smaller and more uniform grains. This study provides the efficient utilization of red mud and biomass as solid wastes for high-valued chemicals and fuels.

Furfural is a valuable chemical, the production of furfural from renewable biomass resources becomes more attractive in recent years. In this study, biomass fast pyrolysis with heterogeneous catalysts (titanium compounds (TiN, TiO 2 and TiOSO 4 ) and metal nitrides (MoN, GaN and VN)) for furfural production was investigated experimentally by means of pyrolysis-gas chromatography/mass-spectrometry (Py-GC/MS). The measurement results indicated that TiN and GaN promoted the furfural compounds production notably mainly through direct decomposition of oligosaccharides. The formation of furfural was promoted when the amount of TiN was increased, and the yield of furfural formed was about 5.5 times the size of that from non-catalytic pyrolysis when TiN/cellulose mass ratio was 4. The furfural yield decreased when the pyrolysis residence time increased from 10 to 30 s, which suggests competitive reactions (formation of 1, 6-anhydro-beta.- d -glucopyranose) against the formation of furfural. TiN, as a catalyst for fast pyrolysis towards furfural production, can be well applied to agriculture biomass residues. Comparing three biomass residues: corncob, wheat straw and cotton stalk, corncob showed higher furfural yield due to the higher holocellulose content, while wheat straw showed higher furfural selectivity.

Hydrodeoxygenation of phenolic components in pyrolysis bio-oil is considered to be a potential strategy for producing renewable aromatic chemicals. The key issue of this process is the establishment of an effective catalytic system that can cleave the CAr–O bonds without affecting the aromatic structure. To achieve this goal, an efficient heterogeneous catalyst with solid acid support (WOx/ZrO2) and active metal (Ru) was prepared in this study. The Ru–WOx/ZrO2 catalyst can effectively convert model phenolic compounds into aromatic hydrocarbons. For a mixed phenolic sample, the conversion to and selectivity for arenes were all around 90%. The good selectivity was proved to be strongly related to the surface adsorption and acid properties of the catalyst as well as the reaction pathway. Moreover, the hydrodeoxygenation of a pretreated bio-oil was also conducted and presented a satisfactory yield of arenes at 240 °C with 1 MPa of H2 reacted for 5 h. The depolymerization of high-molecular-weight phenolic oligomers was found to be significant during the catalytic process, which further enhanced the yield of aromatic monomers.

Pinane is a downstream product of turpentine and is the basic raw material for the production of flavor products such as linalool and lauryl alcohol. To better understand the performance of biomass hydrocarbon pinane as endothermic hydrocarbon fuel, the pyrolysis kinetics and heat exchange performance of pinane under different conditions was investigated. The pyrolysis kinetics of pinane was obtained in a batch reactor at the temperature range of 553–603 K, the apparent rate constants at different test temperatures were obtained, along with the corresponding Arrhenius parameters of pre-exponential factor A = 5.7 × 10 10 s −1 and apparent activation energy E a = 173 kJ·mol −1 . Compared with other typical model fuels, the pyrolysis of pinane shows higher thermal instability. The regenerative cooling test of pinane at temperatures from 400 to 950 K was further performed. The corresponding heat sink is 2.43 MJ·kg −1 at 898 K, indicating the advantage of pinane in the providing higher heat sink in a relatively low temperature range. The detailed analysis of pyrolysis products indicates that pinane mainly undergoes direct ring-opening isomerization at a relatively low temperature stage, producing a large amount of C10 hydrocarbon products. As the temperature rises, the isomers are further cracked to generate small-carbon-number hydrocarbons, accompanied by the formation of a large amount of gas products. Besides, the morphology and spatial distribution of solid deposits on the inner wall of reaction tube after the heat exchange process were characterized by scanning electron microscope and combustion of carbon method. Furthermore, based on the result of product distribution analysis and quantum calculations, a pyrolysis mechanism of pinane has been proposed.

In this study, a new method for the efficient preparation of levoglucosenone (LGO) by biomass catalytic pyrolysis with sulfonated carbon catalyst was proposed. The influence of pyrolysis temperature and the mass ratio of catalyst to glucose or cellulose on the formation of LGO was systematically studied. The results show that when the mass ratio of glucose to sulfonated carbon is 1:1 and the pyrolysis temperature increases from 300 °C to 500 °C, the LGO selectivity first increased and then decreased, reaching a maximum value of 46.4% at 400 °C. Meanwhile, the yield of LGO increased steadily with the increase in pyrolysis temperature, and the yield of LGO was reached a maximum value of 2.48 wt% at 500 °C. However, with the increasing amount of catalyst, the selectivity of LGO increased steadily, while the yield of LGO increased at first and then decreased. Overall, the optimum pyrolysis temperature and mass ratio of the glucose/sulfonated carbon catalyst for LGO production were 400 °C and 1:1, respectively. Density functional theory calculations showed that the catalytic action of sulfonated carbon changed the reaction pathway of glucose pyrolysis, making glucose more inclined to form LGO through a 1,2 dehydration mechanism.
