Solvothermal synthesis of oxygen-incorporated MoS2-x nanosheets with abundant undercoordinated Mo for efficient hydrogen evolution

Man Zhao,Xiaofang Ma,Siwei Yan,He Xiao,Ya Li,Tianjun Hu,Zhanfeng Zheng,Jianfeng Jia,Haishun Wu

Activating the inert basal planes of layered molybdenum disulfide (MoS 2 ) is critical to deliver its high hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) efficiency. Herein, oxygen-incorparated MoS x with abundant undercoordinated Mo atoms is fabricated by a facile solvothermal procedure, which realizes synergistically structural and electronic regulations of MoS 2 inert basal planes . Experiment results reveal that oxygen incoparation can effectively modulate the electronic structure and further optimize the intrinsic conductivity, while the defect-rich structure with abundant undercoordinated Mo atoms increases the number of active sites. Moreover, the influence of solvothermal temperature on activity of MoS 2-x is also investigated. The achieved MoS x electrocatalyst prepared at 220 °C exhibits a superior activity for HER with a low overpotential of 191 mV at 10 mA cm −2 , a small Tafel slope of 67 mV dec −1 , and an excellent stability due to the largest surface area and superior conductivity.

Defect-rich MoS2/r-GO hybrid via microwave-assisted solvothermal process for efficient electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution

Wenzhuo Chen,Liping Sun,Qiang Li,Lihua Huo,Hui Zhao

Defect-rich MoS 2 /r-GO hybrids are successfully synthesized via microwave-assisted solvothermal process, and their electrocatalytic properties for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) are evaluated. The hybrids exhibit low overpotential of 86 mV at 10 mA cm −2 , with a Tafel slope of 44 mV dec −1 as well as promising long-term stability. The activation energy required by HER is 25.4 kJ/mol, and the faraday efficiency reaches 86.3% at −0.16 V (vs. RHE). The attractive performance can be attributed to the abundant defects generated in highly disordered MoS 2 phase, which help to expose a large number of active sites. In addition, the interaction between r-GO and MoS 2 particles promotes the charge transfer process. This work provides a simple strategy for the rational design and mass fabrication of defect-rich MoS 2 -based electrocatalysts for hydrogen evolution reaction.

MoS2 Nanosheets Functionalized Multichannel Hollow Mo2N/Carbon Nanofibers as a Robust Bifunctional Catalyst for Water Electrolysis

Dengyu Xie,Guang Yang,Deshuang Yu,Yanan Hao,Silin Han,Yafei Cheng,Feng Hu,Linlin Li,Huaixin Wei,Changchun Ji,Shengjie Peng

Herein, a heterogeneous system composed of few-layered MoS2 nanosheets functionalized multichannel hollow carbon nanofibers containing Mo2N (Mo2N–MoS2 MCNFs) was successfully developed for the hydrogen/oxygen evolution reactions (HER/OER). The obtained Mo2N–MoS2 MCNFs manifests superior performance with improved durableness for electrocatalysis. Independently, at 10 mA cm–2, the optimal Mo2N–MoS2(1:1) MCNFs achieves overpotentials (η10) of 131 mV for HER and 270 mV for OER. The intimate interaction between the few-layered MoS2 nanosheets array and 1D multichannel hollow carbon nanofibers Mo2N (Mo2N/Carbon MCNFs) advances better exposure of dynamic heterointerfaces, improves the conductivity of electron transfer, and enriches active sites with efficient mass transport. When employed to drive the water electrolysis, Mo2N–MoS2(1:1) MCNFs also demonstrates a modest overall potential of merely 1.63 V to hit 10 mA cm–2. This study will provide a well-designed structure and development for functional materials in electrochemical energy storage and conversion devices.

Modifying microscopic structures of MoS2 by high pressure and high temperature used in hydrogen evolution reaction

Yanli Chen,Jiashi Rong,Qiang Tao,Chen Xing,Min Lian,Jiaen Cheng,Xiaoyan Liu,Jian Cao,Maobin Wei,Shiquan Lv,Pinwen Zhu,Lili Yang,Jinghai Yang

MoS 2 is a classical catalyst for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), but the performance is limited by poor electrical transport in c axis, and absent of active sites in (001) planes (basal planes). Simultaneously enhance the layer's interaction and activate the basal plane in MoS 2 is urgent. In this work, a new sight of high pressure and high temperature (HPHT) was presented to modify the microscopic structures, and finally promoting the connection among the layers and activate the basal planes in bulk MoS 2 . It is found that high pressure generates shear between grains, and results stacking faults in structures. The stacking faults can enhance interaction between MoS 2 sandwich layers, and reduce the charge transfer resistance. An intermediate state was captured, which exhibits distortions in structure at 3 GPa, 200 °C. The distortions cause longer or shorter Mo-S bonds, which introduce strains to activate the basal plane. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations show that the distortions can effective reduced the adsorption free energy of H* in MoS 2 basal plane from 1.92 eV to 0.33 eV. So the activity of MoS 2 was modified by HPHT, which indicates better activity than commercial MoS 2 . This work is not only significant to activate catalyst by HPHT, but also important to promote the functional materials.

Metal organic framework derived Ni0.15Co0.85S2@MoS2 heterostructure as an efficient and stable electrocatalyst for hydrogen evolution

Xiaobing Xu,Wei Zhong,Lei Zhang,Guangxiang Liu,Wei Xu,Youwei Du

Molybdenum Sulfide (MoS 2 ) represents an excellent performance non precious electrocatalyst for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). There are some challenges to further improve the HER property of MoS 2 owing to its inferior conductivity, serious aggregation and limited active sites. In this study, Ni 0.15 Co 0.85 S 2 @MoS 2 hybrids are successfully synthesized in a simple hydrothermal method, where Ni-Co Metal Organic Frameworks (NiCo-MOFs) are served as precursors, which hydrothermally react with ammonium molybdate tetrahydrate (H 24 Mo 7 N 6 O 24 ·4H 2 O) and thiourea (CH 4 N 2 S) to obtain a catalyst for HER. As expected, the optimized Ni 0.15 Co 0.85 S 2 @MoS 2 catalyst presents ultrahigh HER property, a low overpotential of 79 mV at 10 mA cm −2 and a Tafel slope of 52 mV dec −1 can be observed in 1.0 M KOH, accompanied by excellent stability. This result displayed in our study could give a new strategy for designing and synthesizing more economical electrocatalysts based on MOFs as precursors in the future.

MoS2 quantum dots as a specific fluorescence sensor for selection of rutin and for temperature sensing

Yunyun Sun,Wei He,Xiangying Sun,Bin Liu

A selective and sensitive method for detecting rutin using MoS 2 quantum dots (QDs) as a fluorescent probe is reported in the paper, a one-step hydrothermal synthesis method was used to prepare MoS 2 QDs. The synthesized MoS 2 QDs had good stability and water solubility, and the fluorescence of MoS 2 QDs was quenched by rutin due to the inner filter effect. There was a good linear relationship between the intensity of MoS 2 QDs and rutin concentration ranging from 5.0 × 10 −7 to 3.2 × 10 −5 mol/L with a detection limit of 3.5 × 10 −7 mol/L. MoS 2 QDs showed temperature-dependent fluorescence that had an excellent linear relationship between 20 and 80°C. Therefore MoS 2 QDs can be used as specific fluorescence sensors for selection of rutin and for temperature sensing.

Self-Growth of MoS2 Sponge for Highly Efficient Photothermal Cleanup of High-Viscosity Crude Oil Spills

Miao Yu,Peng Xu,Jin Yang,Lai Ji,Changsheng Li

For dealing with crude oil spills, the high viscosity of crude oil greatly limits the absorption capacity of the absorbent materials, making crude oil a major obstacle in the cleaning process. Herein, a MoS 2 -rubber sponge (MoS 2 -RS), as a photothermal sorbent, is prepared by a one-step in situ synthesis. The sponge exhibits excellent superhydrophobicity (the water contact angle is 151°), a high absorption capacity for oils and organic liquids (15–67 g g −1 ), and an outstanding compressive elasticity of 38.6 kPa. Furthermore, MoS 2 -RS shows a good photothermal conversion capability. Under illumination, the viscosity of crude oil could be effectively reduced due to the rapid temperature rise in MoS 2 -RS. This response allows the modified sponge to quickly absorb crude oil, which significantly reduces the adsorption time of 20 µL crude oil from 16 h to 19 s when compared to that of absorbent materials without a photothermal conversion capability. Because of the excellent mechanical performance, MoS 2 -RS could be installed in a vacuum pump to continuously collect crude oil from the water surface. This setup greatly improves the crude oil collecting efficiency. The new photothermal absorbent material shows great potential for the collection of crude oil and the cleanup of spill accidents.

Surface-Functionalized MoS2 Nanosheets Sensor for Direct Electrochemical Detection of PIK3CA Gene Related to Lung Cancer

Wei Zhang,Jimin Yang,Di Wu

An electrochemical biosensor for direct detection of PIK3CA gene related to lung cancer was developed based on riboflavin 5'-monophosphate sodium salt (FMNs)-functionalized MoS2 nanosheets prepared by simple ultrasonication method. As a highly effective biodispersant, FMNs demonstrated excellent stabilization for obtaining highly dispersed MoS2 nanosheets in an aqueous solution. The prepared FMNs/MoS2 nanocomposite with fine electrochemical redox activity was employed as the platform to immobilize DNA probe and supplied the inherent indicator signal for DNA sensing. The amine-terminated ssDNA probe was covalently immobilized onto the FMNs/MoS2 nanocomposite with rich phosphonate groups. After the hybridization of the probe ssDNA with the complementary target DNA, the self-redox signal of the nanocomposite decreased ascribed to the changes in the conformation of DNA. The results indicated that the proposed self-signal detection platform displayed high sensitivity with a detection limit of 1.2 × 10–17 mol l−1 for PIK3CA gene from lung cancer, accompanied with fine selectivity, outstanding stability and reproducibility. The constructed biosensor was easy to design and had the potential for the detection of different pathogenic DNA without intricate label process.

Xianpei Ren,Fan Yang,Rong Chen,Pinyun Ren,Yonghua Wang

MoS2-Based materials are considered to be excellent alternative catalysts for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), where doping engineering has proven to be an effective way to tune their HER activity. Herein, a novel and facile approach was developed to prepare a phosphorus-doped molybdenum sulfide (P-MoS2) electrocatalyst by a post-doping method. After phosphorus doping, the P-MoS2 catalyst accomplished high HER catalytic activity with a low onset overpotential of −118 mV and a small Tafel slope of 52 mV dec−1, making it a promising HER electrocatalyst for practical applications.

Amorphous MoS2 confined in nitrogen-doped porous carbon for improved electrocatalytic stability toward hydrogen evolution reaction

Lu Shaojie,Wang Wenjing,Yang Shengshuang,Chen Wei,Zhuang Zhongbin,Tang Wenjing,He Caihong,Qian Jiajing,Ma Dekun,Yang Yun,Huang Shaoming

Developing non-precious metal catalysts with high activity and stability for electrochemical hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is of great significance in both science and technology. In this work, N-doped CMK-3, which was prepared with a casting method using SBA-15 as the hard template and ammonia as the nitrogen source, has been utilized to hold MoS 2 and restrict its growth to form MoS 2 @N-CMK-3 composite. As a result, MoS 2 was found to have poorly crystallized and the limited space of porous N-CMK-3 made its size much small. Then there are more active sites in MoS 2 . Accordingly, MoS 2 @N-CMK-3 has exhibited good electrocatalytic performance toward HER in acids with a quite small Tafel slope of 32 mVdec” 1 . And more importantly, compared to MoS 2 @CMK-3, its stability has been greatly improved, which can be attributed to the interaction between MoS 2 and nitrogen atoms avoiding aggregation and mass loss. This work provides an idea that doping a porous carbon support with nitrogen is an effective way to enhance the stability of the catalyst.

One-pot synthesis of MoS2/CdS nanosphere heterostructures for efficient H2 evolution under visible light irradiation

Lei-Lei Li,Xing-Liang Yin,Dong-Hui Pang,Xin-Xin Du,Han Xue,Hua-Wei Zhou,Qing-Xia Yao,Huai-Wei Wang,Jun-Chao Qian,Jie Yang,Da-Cheng Li,Jian-Min Dou

Exploration of cost-efficient and high-performance photocatalyst for H 2 evolution by using a facile approach is of great importance. In this manuscript, a facile one-pot method was employed to fabricate MoS 2 /CdS heterostructures with MoS 2 intimately grown on the surface of CdS resulting in the formation of well-defined heterostructures. Screen experiment reveals the optimized photocatalytic H 2 evolution performance of MoS 2 /CdS is far exceeding that of pristine CdS by a factor of more than 162. The outstanding performance can be ascribed to the formation of heterostructures which accelerate charge transportation and separation, and the MoS 2 serving as a cocatalyst for the decrease of H 2 overpotential. Moreover, the photocatalytic mechanism of the MoS 2 /CdS was carefully investigated, which contributes to the deep understanding of the photocatalytic process and the designation of other low-cost and high-efficient photocatalyst.

Dual light-induced in situ antibacterial activities of biocompatibleTiO2/MoS2/PDA/RGD nanorod arrays on titanium

Guannan Zhang,Xingyu Zhang,Yongqiang Yang,Ruifang Chi,Jing Shi,Ruiqiang Hang,Xiaobo Huang,Xiaohong Yao,Paul K. Chu,Xiangyu Zhang

Prevention of bacterial infection and promotion of osseointegration are two important issues for titanium (Ti) implants in medical research. In addition, after a biofilm is formed on the surface of implants, the immune system and antibiotic therapy may fail. In this work, bio-functionalized titanium dioxide (TiO2)/molybdenum disulfide (MoS2)/polydopamine (PDA)/arginine-glycine-aspartic acid (RGD) nanorod arrays (NAs) are prepared on Ti implants to not only kill bacteria noninvasively upon co-irradiation of 660 nm visible light (VL) and 808 nm near infrared (NIR) light, but also promote the osteogenic activity simultaneously. Dual light irradiation triggers the TiO2/MoS2 NA to generate hyperthermia and reactive oxygen species (ROS) in 10 min. The synergistic effects of the generated hyperthermia and ROS increase the bacterial membrane permeability and bacteria are killed rapidly and efficiently in vitro and in vivo. The biofilm is also eradicated and RGD on the nanorods improves cell adhesion, proliferation, and osteogenic differentiation. The strategy described here for the design of bio-functionalized coatings on Ti implants has great clinical potential in orthopedics, dentistry, and other medical fields.
