Controllable preparation of ultralong hydroxyapatite nanofibers using the solvothermal method: Effect of initial Ca/P ratios

Shan Zhang,Yupeng Lu,Yahao Geng,Yixin Yin,Guiyong Xiao

Hydroxyapatite (HA) is an important component of mammalian bones and teeth. Its superior biocompatibility, biological activity, and bone tissue regenerative properties make it an ideal material for bone tissue replacement and regeneration. The morphological characteristics of HA can affect its selection in various applications. In contrast, one-dimensional (1D) micro/nano-structured HA has received widespread attention in the field of biomedicine. In particular, HA ultra-long nanofibers possess excellent mechanical properties, such as flexibility and deformability, overcoming the brittleness of traditional HA ceramic materials. This work successfully synthesized HA ultra-long nanofibers using oleic acid as a template by a solvothermal method. Particularly, the effects of the initial Ca/P ratios (iCa/P) on the morphologies of HA products were investigated. The microstructure and properties of HA products were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray powder diffractometer (XRD) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). The results indicated that the uniform and flexible HA nanofibers can be obtained only under the appropriate iCa/P. In addition, the effect of iCa/P on the microstructures of the HA formation stages was investigated using transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and then the formation mechanism of HA nanofibers was proposed. In this process, it is found that HA nanofibers mainly grow selectively along the c-axis, while iCa/P precisely influences the preferential growth direction of HA products.

Photovoltaic–Pyroelectric coupled effect enhanced photo-responsivity of a p-n heterojunction Self-Powered ultraviolet photodetector

Xinsheng Tang,Tursun Abdiryim,Ruxangul Jamal,Xiong Liu,Fangfei Liu,Feng Xu,Abdukeyum Abdurexit,Qian Cheng,Nawrzhan Serkjan,Shuyue Xie,Yiming Liu

TiO 2 -based ultraviolet (UV) photodetectors (PDs) with broadband optical detection range are widely used in commercial and military applications. Nevertheless, the self-powered UV PDs of TiO 2 nanoarrays (NRs) have relatively low response rates and slow response times. Here, a high responsivity self-powered p-n heterojunction UV PD based on TiO 2 NRs: CQDs/FTO and PEDOS/FTO is fabricated by a simple face-to-face assembly process. The pyroelectric effect of TiO 2 NRs is enhanced by sensitizing TiO 2 NRs with CQDs, which would reduce the bandgap value of TiO 2 NR, broaden the range of photoresponse, and reduce recombination of electron-hole. Furthermore, the pyro-phototronic effect of CQDs, the energy level matching from CQDs to PEDOS and the interaction between –OH in CQDs and ethylene oxide groups in PEDOS enhance the performance of the prepared UV PDs. The TiO 2 NRs: CQDs//PEDOS UV PDs achieve a high photo-responsivity and photo-detectivity of 150.95 mA/W and 3.73 × 10 11 Jones at 0 bias (365 nm), respectively, which are better than those at wavelengths of 380 nm. We also found that the photocurrent induced via the pyro-phototronic effect increases with the light power intensity. This work points the way for photovoltaic and photo-induced pyro-phototronic effects to improve the performance of TiO 2 NRs-based UV PDs.

High performance porous LaFeO3 gas sensor with embedded p-n junctions enabling ppb-level formaldehyde detection

Changlin Xiao,Zihuan Tang,Zhuangzhuang Ma,Xiaotong Gao,Hongqiang Wang,Lichao Jia

Metal oxides based semiconductors promise high performance gas sensing owing to their robustness and low cost, but are limited by their unsatisfied adsorption ability and intrinsic low carriers' mobility. We herein demonstrate an efficient strategy of reducing the adsorption energy and improving the carrier mobility via bulk implanted TiO 2 nanocrystals (NCs) in LaFeO 3 porous structure . By implanting laser generated sub-3 nm TiO 2 NCs in LaFeO 3 samples, the response value (221.8 for 100 ppm formaldehyde) increases about 4 times comparing with that of pristine. Additionally, the sample exhibits high sensitivity and fast response/recovery speed toward formaldehyde steam. The detailed analyses and theoretical calculation proves that the TiO 2 NCs could cause the increase of adsorbed oxygen levels as well as the carrier mobility through forming the heterojunction with LaFeO 3 . This work verifies that TiO 2 NCs implanted LaFeO 3 is a promising formaldehyde sensing material, which provides a new approach to improve sensing ability of metal oxide semiconductor (MOS) based gas sensors.

Rapid degradation of levofloxacin by p-n heterojunction AgFeO2/Ag3VO4 photocatalyst: Mechanism study and degradation pathway

Zhixin Chen,Boyuan Ning,Yanqing Cai,Minghua Liu,Pingfan Xu,Peikun Zhang,Guangcan Xiao,Yunhui He

Background The accumulation of antibiotics in water systems has received considerable global attention due to its detrimental effects. There is an urgent need to develop rapid and efficient methods for the degradation of antibiotics. Methods In this work, a highly efficient AgFeO 2 /Ag 3 VO 4 photocatalyst was successfully fabricated by a hydrothermal method and analyzed using different techniques. Under visible light irradiation, photocatalytic behavior of AgFeO 2 /Ag 3 VO 4 heterojunctions in the degradation of levofloxacin is investigated. Significant findings The results showed that p-n heterojunction was formed between AgFeO 2 and Ag 3 VO 4 , which improved the separation and transfer of photogenerated charge carrier under the action of the internal electric field. The apparent reaction rate of AgFeO 2 /Ag 3 VO 4 heterostructure toward degradation of levofloxacin reached to 0.2770 min −1 , which was about 2.15 times and 36.73 times larger than those of Ag 3 VO 4 and AgFeO 2 , respectively, and much larger than other counterparts. Furthermore, possible photocatalytic degradation pathway of levofloxacin was comprehensively determined by LC-MS analysis. This work would provide in-depth understanding on the efficient photocatalytic removal of antibiotics for sustainable environmental remediation.

Electrodeposited Ni−Co−P Triple-Layered Structure as A Robust and Durable Electrocatalyst for Hydrogen Evolution

Kangli Chen,Yuan Li,Guanjiu Wu,Qing Wang,Chenfeng Fan,Lu Zhang,Jianzheng Song,Shumin Han

Designing Earth-abundant, cost-effective catalysts for hydrogen evolution via water splitting is essential for hydrogen generation. Adding a third metal element to binary phosphides provides the opportunity to tune their morphology, crystalline and electronic structures and thus their electrocatalytic properties. In this study, a hierarchical crystalline/amorphous Ni−Co−P compound is prepared on nickel foam (NF) with different nickel to cobalt ratio by one-step electrodepositing technique. The Ni−Co−P/NF is composed of metallic Co and amorphous phosphides. It has hierarchical morphology, consisting of ∼800 nm spherical particles in the bottom layer, ∼1.5 μm spherical particles in the middle layer, and staggered network structure on the top layer. The Ni−Co−P/NF electrode exhibits superior hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) catalytic activity in the alkaline solution, which requires only 72 mV for delivering 10 mA cm−2. More importantly, the Ni−Co−P/NF catalyst sustains the current density of 20 mAcm−2 for 53 h with negligible degradation in overpotential which shows remarkable electrochemical stability.

Design of p–n heterojunction between CoWO4 and Zn-defective Zn0.3Cd0.7S for efficient photocatalytic H2 evolution

Li Li,Kaixuan Kuang,Xiuzhen Zheng,Jiahui Wang,Wei Ren,Jingbiao Ge,Sujuan Zhang,Shifu Chen

To enhance the efficiency of photocatalytic H 2 evolution, numerous methods are employed by increasing the utilization of photogenerated charge carriers (PCCs), including catalyst design, defect regulation, and selection of suitable H + resources. Using self-assembly method, CoWO 4 /Zn x Cd 1−x S with p–n heterojunction was synthesized. Although CoWO 4 (CW) cannot produce H 2 under visible light irradiation, it can provide photogenerated electrons (e − ) to Zn 0.3 Cd 0.7 S (ZCS), and largely increase the photocatalytic activity of ZCS. The optimal CW/ZCS composite can reach 15.58 mmol·g −1 ·h −1 , which is 45.8 and 24.3 times higher than the values of the pure CdS and ZCS, respectively. The largely enhanced photocatalytic H 2 production is attributed to the Zn vacancies (V Zn ), p–n heterojunction, and p-chlorobenzyl alcohol (Cl–PhCH 2 OH) as the H + source of H 2 production. V Zn on the ZCS surface as the capture center of photogenerated holes (h + ), can regulate the carrier distribution, which results in more photogenerated e − and less generated h + . The combination of p–n heterojunction and V Zn can enhance the separation and transfer efficiency of PCCs, and effectively inhibit the recombination of charge carriers. To further improve the utilization rate of PCCs, the photocatalytic H 2 evolution is proceeded by Cl–PhCH 2 OH oxidation in N , N -dimethylformamide solution, with 4-chlorobenzaldehyde (Cl–PhCHO) generated. The separated photogenerated e − and h + both participated in the redox reaction of H + reduction and Cl–PhCH 2 OH oxidation, considering that the amount of H 2 and Cl–PhCHO products are close to 1:1. This work not only facilitates the separation and transfer of PCCs, but also provides directions for the design of efficient photocatalysts and H 2 evolution in the organic phase.

Controllable synthesis of flower-like Mn-Co-P nanosheets as bifunctional electrocatalysts for overall water splitting

Zipeng Feng,Yanwei Sui,Zhi Sun,Jiqiu Qi,Fuxiang Wei,Yaojian Ren,Zhenzhen Zhan,Meihua Zhou,Dongmei Meng,Lijun Zhang,Lan Ma,Qun Wang

Developing cost-effective and binder-free bifunctional electrocatalysts to boost the hydrogen and oxygen evolution reactions are crucial for overall water splitting. In this work, three-dimensional hierarchical Mn-Co-P/NF electrodes on nickel foam are synthesized by electrodeposition and chemical vapor deposition (CVD) firstly. Provide an excellent and controllable synthesis method by controlling the electrodeposition time and phosphating temperature. The Mn-Co-P composite exhibits the characteristics of vertically grown porous nanosheets, which can effectively expose the active sites. Benefit from the rational design with in-situ growth of functional materials and the unique structure, the Mn-Co-P/NF presents excellent electrocatalytic activities and stability with lower overpotentials of 63 mV and 310 mV to deliver 10 mA cm −2 for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and 10 mA cm −2 for oxygen evolution reaction (OER), respectively. Moreover, when directly used as a positive electrode and a negative electrode to form an electrocatalytic device to complete the overall water splitting, Mn-Co-P/NF merely requires a small cell voltage of 1.70 V to obtain 20 mA cm −2 . This work offers a controllable method to design and synthesize highly efficient and stable transition metal phosphide catalysts for overall water splitting and other catalytic fields.

Feasibility of thermo-sensitive P(NIPAM-MBA) hydrogels as novel stripping agents for osmotic membrane distillation

Jing Ren,Jianfeng Li,Zhaozan Xu,Zhiping Du,Fangqin Cheng

As thermo-sensitive hydrogels could absorb water quickly and squeeze the water out by their insoluble cross-linked networks under thermal stimulus, a novel osmotic membrane distillation (OMD) process was proposed for the first time. In the OMD process of this study, water vapor diffused across the membrane under the swelling pressure of thermo-sensitive hydrogels. Poly-N-isopropylacrylamide (PNIPAM) hydrogels with 0.02%, 0.1% and 0.5% N,N′-methylenebisacrylamide (MBA) were synthesized and incorporated into the OMD system. The hydrogel properties were characterized by UV–vis spectrophotometer, FTIR and SEM . The effects of MBA content, membrane characteristics, operating temperature on OMD flux were investigated. The initial fluxes for the 0.02%, 0.1% and 0.5% MBA hydrogel-OMD systems were 1.68, 1.09 and 0.76 kg/m 2 ·h, respectively. And the hydrogels transformed to dehydrated state after 150 min of water absorption. The fastest water absorption rates for PNIPAM hydrogels with 0.02%, 0.1% and 0.5% MBA were obtained at the initial swelling ratios of 16, 14 and 12 folds, respectively. Besides, the optimal feed temperatures for the maximum flux were 40 °C, 50 °C and 50 °C for hydrogels with 0.02%, 0.1% and 0.5% MBA, respectively. The membranes with higher porosity and lower thickness demonstrated higher fluxes. According to our results, the swelling pressure of hydrogel acted as a driving force of the hybrid hydrogel-OMD system, and it was greatly affected by the hydrogel structure. Typically, a hydrogel with the balanced water absorbing and dewatering behaviors and a membrane with good mass transfer performance were two essential prerequisites for this process.

Amorphous/amorphous Ni–P/Ni(OH)2 heterostructure nanotubes for an efficient alkaline hydrogen evolution reaction

Fuzhen Zhao,Huicong Liu,Houyu Zhu,Xiaoyu Jiang,Liqun Zhu,Weiping Li,Haining Chen

Amorphous/amorphous heterostructures with a large surface area are theoretically anticipated to promote the alkaline hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) activity and stability. However, the growth, characterization and theoretical simulation of amorphous/amorphous nanostructured heterostructures are still challenging due to their atomic isotropy. Herein, a novel and simple strategy is developed to synthesize amorphous/amorphous Ni–P/Ni(OH)2 heterostructure nanotubes by immersing Zn@Ni–P nanowires grown by axial screw dislocation in alkaline solution. When used as an HER catalyst, the Ni–P/Ni(OH)2 nanotubes achieve considerably high electrocatalytic activity and decent stability. The significantly low overpotential of 54.7 mV at a current density of 10 mA cm−2 is among the best values reported for transition metal phosphides in alkaline solution. Density functional theory calculations indicate that the abundant defect structures of amorphous Ni–P would shift the Ni 3d band center toward the Fermi level, demonstrating an energy barrier decrease for H2 generation. Furthermore, the synergistic effect of amorphous Ni–P and Ni(OH)2 could significantly enhance H2O dissociation to supply sufficient protons for the HER.

CoNi alloy nanoparticles coated with carbon layer doped with P atom for efficient hydrogen evolution reaction

Chunjie Yu,Xingwu Zhai,Pengcheng Wu,Zhaoqing Zhu,Banghua Peng,Guixian Ge,Zhiyong Liu

Low cost, high activity and stability electrocatalysts for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) have been extensively studied in recent years. We have successfully synthesized a transition metal phosphide electrocatalyst (CoNi@CP) with coating structure . The CoNi@CP was prepared with the mild conditions. An organophosphorus ligand was synthesized by simple organic reaction . It was synthesized by coordination with Co 2+ and Ni 2+ and then calcined. CoNi@CP has abundant and uniform phosphorus atom doping, no energy consumption in phosphating process, and avoids the generation of highly toxic gas PH 3 . Because of its special coating structure, the adsorption of H ∗ on its surface was enhanced, and the active center of CoNi was protected, which contributed greatly to the improvement of catalytic performance. At 10 mA/cm 2 current density, the overpotential of the catalyst only 74 mV, and the slope of Tafel was only 83 mVdec -1 . The performance of the catalyst remained unchanged after 1000 stability tests. In addition, we had proved theoretically that the catalyst had high HER activity by DFT calculation. Therefore, it provides inspiration for us to better develop efficient transition metal phosphide electrocatalysts.

Homogeneous dual-site P lattice doping in CdS quantum rods for visible-light photocatalytic water splitting

He Li,Hua An,Ben Chong,Guidong Yang,Lianzhou Wang

Dual-site lattice doping in semiconductor materials is highly promising for photocatalysis as it can tune the sub-band electronic structure and charge distribution of the photocatalyst. However, it is challenging to precisely regulate the band structure by dual-site doping using the same heteroatom. Herein, we report the homogeneous dual-site P lattice doping in CdS quantum rods, i.e. P is homogeneously doped into both substitutional site of S and interstitial site, leading to negative shift of valence and conduction bands with extraordinary visible-light excitation efficiency. The electrons generated in the newly designed photocatalyst have strong redox potential in reducing H + into H 2 in photocatalysis. By introducing nontrivial co-catalyst Ni 3 C quantum dots onto the surface of P-CdS quantum rods, the apparent quantum efficiency of the catalyst achieves 15.7% at 435 nm, which is 5 times higher than that of pristine CdS.

Synergistic function of N-P-Cu containing supermolecular assembly networks in intumescent flame retardant thermoplastic polyurethane

Kexin Chen,Dong Yang,Yongqian Shi,Yuezhan Feng,Libi Fu,Chuan Liu,Ming Chen,Fuqiang Yang

The design of high-performance compounded flame retardants based on multielement can be of great significance for reducing the flammability of polymer materials. In this article, a new type of N-P-Cu containing supermolecular assembly network (MPCSN) flame retardant was prepared and subsequently added into thermoplastic polyurethane elastomer (TPU)/silicon microencapsulated ammonium polyphosphate (SiAPP) composites. The obtained results indicated that a series of TPU/SiAPP/MPCSN composites exhibited strong adhesions with the TPU matrix. Additionally, the thermal and flame retardant performances of TPU composites were markedly improved after the introduction of different proportions of SiAPP to MPCSN. For example, the peak of heat release rate, the total heat release, the peak of smoke production rate, the total smoke release of the TPU composite containing 7.5 wt% SiAPP and 2.5 wt% MPCSN (TPU/SiAPP3/MPCSN1) remarkably decreased by 68.7%, 52.9%, 52.4%, and 49.4%, respectively, besides the highest LOI value (27.5 vol%) and UL-94 V-0 rating, compared with those of pure TPU. The improved flame retardance of the TPU/SiAPP3/MPCSN1 composite was due to the explanations: On one hand, a compact intumescent char effectively protected the TPU matrix from heat and oxygen and retarded the gaseous products permeation into the combustion zone; on the other hand, evolved phosphorus-containing free radicals captured the H• and HO• generated from the TPU material. The synergistic effect of SiAPP and MPCSN resulted in strong flame suppression, accompanied by 10.8% and 37.8% reductions in FIGRA and Av-EHC, respectively. This article offers a facile approach to fabricate highly effective flame-retardant TPU composites.
