Ag-loaded zeolites were synthesized and embedded into the outer layer of poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) dual-layer hollow fiber membrane (D) using a dry-jet wet-spinning co-extruding technique. The distribution of the Ag-loaded zeolites in the outer layer was confirmed by field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX). It was found that the D contained only 54% of the amount of Ag-loaded zeolites that were distributed throughout the cross section of PVDF single-layer hollow fiber membrane (S), as calculated by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). However, D showed excellent antibacterial efficiency and resistance to bacterial adhesion because of the higher concentration of Ag + in the outer layer of the membrane. The surface morphologies , pure water flux, mean pore size, pore size distribution , and thermal stability of both PVDF membranes were also investigated.

There is a contradiction in making completely opaque and white plastic film with a required high TiO 2 filling fraction, which resulted in inefficient pigment utilization and high cost. Two methods were used here to overcome the contradiction. Firstly, TiO 2 was grafted with poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) by atom transfer radical polymerization to improve the pigment dispersion in poly(vinylidene) fluoride (PVDF). Secondly, minute amounts of carbon black (CB) were added into the PMMA- g -TiO 2 /PVDF system to enhance opacity and decrease TiO 2 fraction. The structure, morphology, and properties of PMMA- g -TiO 2 hybrid particles and composite films were investigated by FTIR, TEM, TGA, SEM, DMA, covering power meter, and UV/VIS spectrophotometer, etc. It was observed that PMMA- g -TiO 2 was dispersed uniformly as individual particles in PVDF due to the good compatibility between PMMA and PVDF. Therefore, the opacity of PMMA- g -TiO 2 /PVDF films was markedly higher than unmodified-TiO 2 /PVDF ones. Adding minute amounts of CB can significantly increase the opacity of the thin film due to its absorption effect on decreasing light transmittance. The contrast ratio (CR) of the PMMA- g -TiO 2 /PVDF film with 20 μm thickness and 25 vol % TiO 2 was 97.67%, lower than the critical CR 98% for a complete opacity, however, the CR of sample with 10 vol % TiO 2 was 98.1% as the CB concentration was 2 × 10 −4 g/cm 3 , saved more than 15% TiO 2 . We proposed that a critical thickness d 0 existed for the CB/PMMA- g -TiO 2 /PVDF composite films, under which the light reflectance increased as a function of thickness, otherwise, the reflectance kept constant. Besides, d 0 could be decreased by increasing CB concentration. © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Polym. Sci. 2016 , 133 , 43064.

In this paper, nanoscale MnO2 particles were attached onto the surface of a PVDF flat sheet membrane, step by step, first through dispersion of graphene oxide (GO) in the PVDF membrane, then reduction of immobilized GO by hydroiodic acid and further micro-wave assisted oxidation of RGO (reduced graphene oxide) by KMnO4 and formation of MnO2 on GO. The SEM observation revealed an asymmetric structure with a finger-like transition layer dominating the membrane of PVDF/MnO2. The uniform distribution of MnO2 on the membrane is revealed by EDX and XPS analysis. The attached MnO2 endowed the membrane with high adsorption capacity for aqueous Ni(II). The adsorption was spontaneous and endothermic, fitting a pseudo-first-order kinetic model and Freundlich isotherm model well. The pure water flux and stable permeation flux of the PVDF/MnO2 membrane reached 31.2 L m−2 h−1 and 9.0 L m−2 h−1 under 0.1 MPa, which were 2.3 and 2.6 times those of the PVDF membrane. The analysis of the fouling resistance and flux recovery ratio indicated that the PVDF/MnO2 membrane had better antifouling properties than the PVDF membrane, attributed to the changes of membrane morphologies and surface hydrophilicity. The PVDF/MnO2 membrane had a high removal ratio (≥87.4%) of Ni2+ in dynamic adsorption. Meanwhile the Ni(II) adsorbed membrane could be easily regenerated by a 0.1 M HNO3 solution.

Adsorption membranes have become a hot spot for wastewater treatment in recent years. Due to the lack of active sites in traditional inert materials such as polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) membranes, it is difficult to bind pollutants in water with high affinity. Therefore, in this study, ZrT-1-NH 2 /PVDF mixed matrix membranes (MMMs) were prepared by combining an amino-functionalized Zr-based metal–organic cage (ZrT-1-NH 2 ) with a polymer substrate via non-solvent-induced phase separation method for the efficient removal of Orange G (OG) from water. This method has many advantages such as simplicity in operation, high applicability, controllable MOFs loading. The structural characteristics and adsorption properties and of MMMs were also investigated through a series of characterizations and experiments. The result shows that in a 100 mL OG solution with an initial concentration of 50 mg/L and pH=3, M60 exhibited significant adsorption capacity, the removal efficiency reached 97.23 %, with an adsorption capacity of 64.18 mg/g, which is much higher than the pristine PVDF membrane. It is mainly attributed to electrostatic interactions and hydrogen bonding interactions between ZrT-1-NH 2 and OG molecules. This is consistent with the DFT calculations. The introduction of ZrT-1-NH 2 filler improves the performance of PVDF membranes and expands their potential applications.

Polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) membranes represent a potential technology for the in-depth treatment of organic dye-containing wastewater. Nevertheless, the intractable membrane fouling and the limited versatility have significantly constrained its applications. Herein, through the nonsolvent-induced phase inversion method, we have successfully fabricated the PDA@MgO/PVDF and PDA@ZnO/PVDF membranes, which are modified by the synergistic action of MgO or ZnO nanoparticles with polydopamine (PDA), respectively. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), as well as the analyses of pore structure, contact angle, and surface free energy, were utilized to characterize the hybrid membranes. The results demonstrate that the modification of PDA@MgO and PDA@ZnO can enhance the hydrophilicity, pure flux, dye rejection, and pollution resistance of PVDF membranes. The enhanced hydrophilicity of the modified membranes results from the increase in surface free energy and its polar component term. Comparatively, the PDA@ZnO/PVDF membrane exhibits a smaller contact angle (69°) and a higher pure water flux (378.63 L/m2·h·bar), whereas the PDA@MgO/PVDF membrane possesses greater mechanical strength and better antifouling performance. The PDA@MgO/PVDF membrane can achieve a rejection rate of 94.6% for disperse deep blue 79, and the flux recovery rate can reach approximately 82%. This research offers novel insights into the application of PVDF membranes for the treatment of organic dye-containing wastewater.

The advancement of polymer solid electrolytes is essential for the development of solid-state lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). Polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF), recognized for its unique piezoelectric properties and hydrophobicity, emerges as a promising candidate for polymer solid-state electrolyte applications. Nevertheless, its practical usage is hindered by low ionic conductivity at room temperature. To overcome this limitation, we engineered a novel PVDF/LiTFSI/TiO 2 -ov (PLTO) electrolyte by incorporating oxygen-rich vacancy titanium dioxide with PVDF, resulting in significant enhancements in both ionic conductivity and mechanical performance—crucial factors for the long-term stability of batteries. D33 measurements and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy analyses revealed an increase in the β-phase (TTTT conformation) content of the doped PVDF, which substantially contributes to the improved piezoelectric performance. Furthermore, density functional theory (DFT) analysis indicated that oxygen vacancies facilitate the decomposition of lithium salts and enhance anion adsorption, thereby boosting ion transport efficiency. When integrated into a Li/PLTO/LiFePO 4 semi-solid-state battery, this electrolyte membrane achieved an impressive specific capacity of 154.22 mAh/g at room temperature and 0.5 C, maintaining 95.31 % capacity over 850 cycles, demonstrating exceptional durability. Additionally, lithium/lithium symmetric batteries constructed with PLTO exhibited long-term stability exceeding 3800 hours. The stability of this battery in practical applications, such as LED lighting and subtitle control, underscores its practicality and potential contribution to energy sustainability. This study offers new perspectives for the development of high-performance electrolyte membranes.

Polymer film capacitors with high stability and reliability at elevated temperatures are promising for next-generation power electronic systems and hybrid electric vehicles. In this work, sandwich-structured composite films with good dielectric thermal stability were fabricated based on hybrid membranes of poly(vinylidene fluoride)/polyacrylonitrile blend nanofibrous skeleton highly filled with BaTiO 3 nanoparticles. Composite films with 64.7 vol% BaTiO 3 nanoparticles in the core layer exhibited high permittivity (38.1) and low loss (0.046) at 1 kHz and room temperature, and the dielectric permittivity and loss were only slightly increased to 41.5 and 0.08, respectively, at 120°C. Good dispersion and high loading of BaTiO 3 nanoparticles in the composites films contributed to enhanced dielectric thermal stability and permittivity. Moreover, the composite films showed good flexibility, which could be ascribed to its sandwich-structure. Our work paves a generic way to fabricate flexible composite films with excellent dielectric thermal stability via high loadings of ceramic nanoparticles. POLYM. Electrically modulated surface-enhanced Raman scattering (E-SERS) enhances Raman signals by adjusting the plasmon resonance of noble metal nanostructures with an electric field. However, traditional E-SERS substrates require complex electrochemical setups, limiting portability. Piezoelectric materials, which generate surface charges under external forces, present a promising alternative. This study develops a novel self-powered E-SERS substrate by embedding piezoelectric material 0.5Ba(Zr 0.2 Ti 0.8 )O 3 -0.5(Ba 0.7 Ca 0.3 )TiO 3 (BZT-BCT) in polyvinylidene difluoride-hexafluoropropylene (PVDF-HFP) matrix combined with silver nanoparticles. Experiments with nanogenerator piezoelectricity reveal that pressing the substrate with a finger generates current and voltage, providing an electric field for SERS enhancement. Gradual addition of weights on the substrate significantly boosts Raman signals of molecules like p-aminothiophenol (PATP), crystal violet (CV), thiram, and methyl bromide (MB). The synergy of piezoelectric effect and localized plasmon resonance achieves high sensitivity, reproducibility, and detection limits down to 10 −9 M, with an enhancement factor of 10 9 . Moreover, the sensor effectively detects trace MB veterinary drug residues in fish meat and thiram pesticide residues on apple skin, introducing a new self-powered E-SERS platform for sensitive food contaminant detection.

We have developed a piezoelectric hydrogel composite comprising cross-linked polyvinylidene fluoride-sodium alginate (PVDF-SA) and calcium copper titanate nanowires (CCTO) as the piezoelectric filler, and hydroxyapatite nanoparticles (HA) as the mineral filler. A freeze-drying method was used to prepare piezoelectric hydrogel scaffold. The PVDF/SA-CCTOs-HA hydrogel composite with 0.5% CCTO and 0.4% HA content demonstrated significantly improved piezoelectric performance. Specifically, it exhibited the highest piezoelectric performance among all samples, with V OC of 7 V and I SC of 3.5 μA. These values were 5.5 and 4.9 times higher, than those of the pure PVDF-SA hydrogel scaffold. The rheology studies explored the viscoelastic properties of hydrogel and found that the hydrogel's solid characteristics led to a higher elastic modulus in comparison to the viscous modulus. The composite exhibited higher compressive and tensile strengths at 8.2 and 0.8 MPa, respectively, compared to the pure hydrogel, which has strengths of 6.3 and 0.4 MPa. In vitro studies revealed the good cytocompatibility, cell proliferation of MC3T3-E1 cells on piezoelectric composite. The PVDF-SA/CCTO-HA demonstrated significant antibacterial properties, offering further advantages for its practical applications. The hydrogel composite can identify various human activities, such as wrist and elbow movements, finger pressing and releasing, and heel pressure. Furthermore, it demonstrated its energy storage capability by charging a 1 μF capacitor. This work offers a practical approach to fabricate hydrogel scaffolds possessing favorable piezoelectric characteristics, biocompatibility, robust mechanical properties, and enhanced proliferation, thereby enabling their extensive utilization in bone tissue engineering applications, human movement detection, and energy harvesting.

With the development of artificial intelligence (AI) and the Internet of Things, self-supplied piezoelectric devices based on polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) have attracted widespread attention. However, the piezoelectric output of PVDF is limited, and there is a contradiction between improving piezoelectric performance and maintaining mechanical properties. Herein, a piezoelectric core–shell microstructure- based PVDF nanogenerator with enhanced piezoelectric/mechanical performance is proposed by coaxial electrospinning process. The core–shell microstructure improves the piezoelectric properties through the synergistic effect between the piezoelectric core and shell, while the cladding of the shell helps to maintain the mechanical properties. Moreover, the mechanism of enhanced piezoelectric synergistic effect is revealed by COMSOL simulation. The presented nanogenerators based on AlN-core–shell microstructures outputs is up to 65 V, a 2.3-fold improvement over AlN-doped nanogenerators, along with a 164 % increase in strain. Importantly, the capability of BTO and ZnO core–shell microstructures to enhance piezoelectric/mechanical performance is demonstrated, which proves the proposed strategy is a scalable method. Furthermore, a self-powered wireless tactile recognition and speed monitoring system are developed by combining AI algorithm technology and acquisition circuitry. The recognition accuracy of deformation and shape recognition reached 98.62 % and 98.81 %, respectively. The speed monitoring system can be applied to road interval speed detection. This study provides a new approach to improve the electrical and mechanical properties of PVDF-based nanogenerators, offering favorable support for the application of PVDF-based devices in fields including energy harvesting, device integration, flexible electronics, and human–computer interaction.

The perfluorosulfonic acid (PFSA) polymers have achieved great success as proton exchange membranes (PEMs) in various energy storage and conversion devices; nevertheless, the improvements regarding PEMs' synthetic cost, mechanical properties, stability and processability are still urgently required. Herein, 1 nm super acidic metal oxide cluster, H 3 PW 12 O 40 (PW 12 ), is complexed with the blends of polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) and polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) to afford nanocomposite PEMs that enables the stable and effective operation of hydrogen fuel cell devices. As the polymer matrix , the PVDF is blended with PVP via inter-chain hydrogen bonding to provide mechanical support for the nanocomposite PEMs. The further introduced PW 12 clusters can interact strongly with PVP via electrostatic attraction to enhance the PEMs' mechanical strength (E = 231 MPa) and prevent the leaching of PW 12 for long-term stability. Meanwhile, the incorporation of the super acidic PW 12 can facilitate the fast proton transportation and therefore, lead to the significant increasement of proton conductivity to 9.8 × 10 −3 S cm −1 at 70 °C and 100% RH. Due to the excellent mechanical properties and the supramolecular interaction among the components, the PEMs’ thickness can be controlled to be challenging ∼10μm for feasible large-scale continuous processing. Finally, the molecular design enables the successful fabrication of the nanocomposite PEMs into fuel cell devices with the power density as 342.8 mW cm −2 . The studies not only shed light on the structure-properties of polymer nanocomposites , but also pave avenues to the design of robust composite PEMs for fuel cell appliacations.

In spite of the high level of attention paid to multifunctional sensors, the flexible and multifunctionality are still intractable challenges to be tackled. Herein, we design a flexible, hydrophobic and stable multifunctional sensing material by electrostatic spinning of PVDF/ZnWO 4 @PDA (PZP). The incorporation of ZnWO 4 @PDA into PVDF nanofibers can act as an effective nucleating agent and photosensitizer, which increases the polar crystalline phase and photovoltaic properties of PVDF. With the synergy of PVDF and ZnWO 4 @PDA, PZP based piezoelectric sensors offer significantly superior electrical output (28.4 V, 600 nA) and high sensitivity (1.04 V/kPa). Moreover, it is particularly surprising that photoelectric sensor based on PZP textiles has excellent optical properties, as confirmed by the response / recovery time (0.6 s / 0.66 s) of simulated sunlight detection. Piezoelectric photoelectric effect exists in PZP textiles, as evidenced by the significant increase in the strain output current of photoelectric sensor when irradiated with sunlight. Furthermore, based on the coupling of piezoelectric effect and triboelectric effect of PZP composite, the contact out nano-triboelectric generator has enhanced the electrical output and electromechanical conversion efficiency. Therefore, this work has successfully prepared multifunctional sensing materials that integrate pressure sensing, audio recognition, underwater communication, optoelectronic detection and triboelectric energy collection, paving a new way for the flexible multifunctional sensors.
