Early diagnosis and effective treatment of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is quite critical for improving patients’ prognosis. The combination of second near-infrared window photoacoustic imaging (NIR-II PAI) and T2-magnetic resonance imaging (T2-MRI) is promising for achieving omnibearing information on HCC diagnosis due to the complementary advantages of outstanding optical contrast, high temporospatial resolution and soft-tissue resolution. Thus, the rational design of a multifunctional targeted nanoplatform with outstanding performance in dual-modal NIR-II PAI/T2-MRI is particularly valuable for precise diagnosis and imaging-guided non-invasive photothermal therapy (PTT) of early-stage HCC. Herein, a versatile targeted organic–inorganic hybrid nanoprobe was synthesized as a HCC-specific contrast agent for sensitive and efficient theranostics. The developed multifunctional targeted nanoprobe yielded superior HCC specificity, reliable stability and biocompatibility, high imaging contrast in both NIR-II PAI and T2-MRI, and an excellent photothermal conversion efficiency (74.6%). Furthermore, the theranostic efficiency of the targeted nanoprobe was systematically investigated using the orthotopic early HCC-bearing mice model. The NIR-II PAI exhibited sensitive detection of ultra-small HCCs (diameter less than 1.8 mm) and long-term real-time monitoring of the tumor and nanoprobe targeting process in deep tissues. The T2-MRI demonstrated clear imaging contrast and a spatial relationship between micro-HCC and adjacent structures for a comprehensive description of the tumor. Moreover, when using the targeted nanoprobe, the non-invasively targeted PTT of orthotopic early HCC was carried out under reliable dual-modal imaging guidance with remarkable anti-tumor efficiency and biosafety. This study provides an insight for constructing a multifunctional targeted nanoplatform for precise and comprehensive theranostics of early-stage HCC, which would greatly benefit the patients in the era of precision medicine.

A heavy atoms modified reaction-active photosensitizer NHS-BODIPY-Br possessing efficient near infrared (NIR) fluorescence emission and singlet oxygen generation properties has been synthesized, which can be used for synchronous NIR imaging and photodynamic therapy (PDT). A reduction-sensitive PEGylated polypeptide nanogel was prepared by ring-opening polymerization (ROP) of l -cystine- N -carboxy anhydride. Poly (ethylene glycol) methyl ether was used as initiator and hydrophilic segment, the as-prepared nanogel was conjugated with the NHS-BODIPY-Br molecule by chemical linkage, and it can be directly used as a macrophotosentizer for NIR imaging-guided PDT. In addition, the nanogel also showed good encapsulating ability for doxorubicin (DOX). In the presence of glutathione (10 mM), the obtained NIR nanogel showed obvious reduction-induced drug release behavior. In vitro tests on internalization of the NIR nanogel by HepG2 cells indicated its efficiency in detecting cancer cells. Meanwhile, MTT assays performed on HepG2 cells confirmed that the cancer cells growth could be obviously suppressed (almost all cells) when exposed to an extremely low energy light (25 mW/cm 2 , 10–15 J/cm 2 ) and low dose of DOX (3–5 μg/ml), indicates an efficient NIR image-guided chem/photodynamic therapy.

Broadband near-infrared (NIR) phosphors are considered key to smart NIR light sources for next-generation blue LEDs. The excitation modes of a few Cr 3+ -activated phosphors are mainly in the ultraviolet or red-light bands (possibly related to the coexistence of multiple valence states of Cr), and the low blue light absorption rate has a certain hindering effect on commercialization needs. In this work, Li + ion doping reduced the concentration of oxygen vacancies in the material and promoted the reduction of Cr 4+ ions to Cr 3+ , effectively enhancing the excitation intensity of SrGe 4 O 9 :Cr 3+ (I 1 /I 2 :0.59 → 1.19). Moreover, a small-scale shift occurred to the blue excitation peak (441 nm→462 nm), which is crucial for the efficient absorption of the blue light chip excitation light. The doping of Li + ions ultimately resulted in enhancement of the emission intensity of Cr 3+ by 17.2 times, obtaining a phosphor with extremely excellent luminescence efficiency (IQE = 99.6 %). In addition, the integral emission intensity of the phosphor at 423 K was 77.6 % of that at room temperature, demonstrating good temperature stability. The NIR pc-LEDs were fabricated by combining SrGe 4 O 9 :Cr 3+ , Li + phosphor with the blue LED, which can be applied in pigment penetration, blood vessel visualization and night vision, revealing its great potential for application.

The coating optimized with high near-infrared reflectance pigments can effectively reduce the energy consumption for heating and cooling in buildings, thereby alleviating the pressure on global energy consumption. Using a high-temperature solid-state method, blue-violet pigments with high near-infrared reflectance, Ca 2 Zn 1- x M x Si 2 O 7 (M = Mn, 0 ≤ x ≤ 0.4 and Ni, 0 ≤ x ≤ 0.2) solid solutions, were synthesized for the first time, with a maximum solar reflectance of 82.67%. Using XPS analysis, it was determined that the oxidation state of Ni in the pigment is +2, while Mn exists in mixed oxidation states of +2 and +3. UV-VIS-NIR spectroscopy analysis indicates that the blue-violet color of the pigment originates from the d-d transitions of the transition metal ions. As the doping concentration increases, the near-infrared reflectance of the pigment decreases. The DFT calculations have also confirmed that the color of pigments originates from transition metal ions. The as-synthesized pigments were incorporated into acrylic to create colored coatings. Improving the near-infrared solar reflectance of the acrylic coating. The excellent high near-infrared solar reflectance and coating property optimization make the synthesized pigment a potential energy-saving coating.

Combinatory photodynamic and chemotherapy have demonstrated superior performance in cancer ablation over singular therapeutics. However, photodynamic therapy (PDT) often exhibits suboptimal efficacy for deep-seated tumors, owing to the limited penetration depth of illumination light, while chemotherapy is generally accompanied by severe side effects. Therefore, it is imperative to develop a functional nanoplatform for combinatory PDT and chemotherapy, which could, for PDT, achieve enhanced light penetration and, for chemotherapy, realize reduced therapeutic threshold dosage and a controllable drug release profile (e.g., minimized release in blood circulation but bursting release in the tumor microenvironment). Herein, we demonstrate a therapeutic nanoplatform composed of poly(acrylic acid) (PAA)-modified silica-coated Nd3+-doped upconversion nanoparticles decorated with methylene blue (MB) and doxorubicin (DOX) in silica and a PAA layer, respectively. Notably, 808 nm light is used to excite upconversion nanoparticles and further trigger the photosensitization behavior of MB in PDT, while the quick acid response of the PAA layer in the tumor acid environment introduces DOX bursting for optimized chemotherapy with significantly decreased therapeutic threshold dosage and minimized side effects. Importantly, the anticancer efficiency of the nanoplatform in vitro and in vivo shows an IC50 and a tumor inhibition rate of 12.55 μg mL–1 and 89.81%, respectively. This study provides a strategy for combinatory cancer therapy.

Sulfur dioxide (SO 2 ) is an important marker in the human body, and maintaining its balance is very significant for human health. The high concentration of SO 2 will cause harm to human health because of the transient nature of SO 2 . To measure the level of SO 2 , it is urgent to find a suitable detection method for the real-time monitoring of sulfite. Herein, we designed and exploited a Near-Infrared (NIR) turn-on fluorescent probe L derived from rhodamine for the detection of SO 3 2− in living cells and zebrafish. The addition of sulfite would attack the 4-position of the carbonyl group of levulinic acid, resulting in the cleavage of the ester bond and the formation of the fluorophore . The intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) was restored thus the monitoring system emitted the corresponding long NIR fluorescence at 646 nm. Probe L had high selectivity, a short response period within 10 min, and the detection limit of 0.6 μM. Besides, Probe L had a long excitation wavelength (>580 nm), which was in favor of more deeply biological imaging properties. Moreover, Probe L had low cell cytotoxicity through MTT assay, thus it was confirmed with good biocompatibility . In addition, probe L could successfully real-time monitor exogenous and endogenous sulfite in living cells, and be applied in zebrafish. The confocal results suggested that probe L had strong potential application prospect of outstanding capabilities for detecting sulfite in clinical diagnostics.

Chemotherapy, as one main strategy to relieve tumor progression, has a weak effect on triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) chest wall metastasis. The development of near-infrared (NIR) light-responsive nanomaterials for chemodynamic therapy (CDT) and photothermal therapy (PTT) is a promising platform but still challenging in biomedicine. This study reports a peroxidase mimicking nanozyme (Fe-N-C SAzyme) against TNBC by CDT and PTT. Fe-N-C SAzyme generated reactive oxygen species (ROS) by decomposing H2O2 into hydroxyl radicals (•OH) and also induced light-to-heat conversion under the exposure of 808 nm laser irradiation. With these biological characteristics, the obtained Fe-N-C SAzymes displayed enhanced cell cytotoxicity and inhibition of cancer cell proliferation both in vitro and in vivo at a low dose of nanoagent and a moderate NIR laser power density. Besides, Fe-N-C nanoagent with its excellent ROS generation brought metabolic reprogramming of elevated glycolysis in tumor cells. In vivo experiments, when combined with PTT, the enhanced antitumor effect was found by the elimination of M-MDSC in tumor microenvironment. Fe-N-C SAzymes can serve as a new synergistic CDT and PTT nanoagent to simultaneously reprogram tumor metabolism and tumor microenvironment. It will provide prospects for chemodynamic/photothermal combined cancer therapy for TNBC chest wall metastasis based on the use of a single nanosystem.

Advances in broadband near-infrared (NIR) emitting materials represent a pivotal frontier for next-generation intelligent NIR phosphor-converted light-emitting diode (pc-LED) technologies. However, practical implementation of these materials has been constrained by challenges such as suboptimal quantum efficiency (QE) and pronounced thermal quenching (TQ). In this study, we report the synthesis and comprehensive characterization of broadband NIR-emitting phosphors, Gd 3 AlGa 4 O 12 :Cr 3+ , exhibiting anti-TQ properties without compromising QE. The material's inherent structural rigidity , wide bandgap, and the minimal electron-phonon coupling (EPC) effect provide a foundation for high-performance broadband NIR luminescence. Strategic optimization of Cr 3+ doping concentrations, combined with controlled excited-state electron migration, achieves an internal quantum efficiency (IQE) of 98.23 % and a remarkable anti-TQ capability (135.1 %@483 K). The practical potential is further demonstrated through prototype NIR pc-LED implementation, where integration with a commercial blue LED chip delivers an NIR output power of 285.38 mW at 1170 mA and a wall-plug efficiency (WPE) of 17.42 % at 30 mA, highlighting its potential for use in diverse applications such as plant growth, component analysis, night vision, nondestructive detection, and non-invasive imaging. Overall, this work addresses critical challenges in broadband NIR phosphors and advances the development of high-performance and energy-efficient miniatured broadband NIR light sources .

In this study, for the first time, a novel near-infrared and ratiometric fluorescent probe was conveniently synthesized by reacting PDI-based salicylaldehyde with 2-(hydrazonomethyl)phenol. The probe was designed based on the intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) mechanism and the intramolecular electron transfer (IET) mechanism, which can be blocked by the hypochlorite and a larger conjugation is formed within the probe. Due to the turn-on fluorescence responses triggered by the PET and ICT processes after the ClO− addition, the probe produces simultaneous emission peaks at 600 nm and 820 nm. In addition, the probe shows a rapid fluorescence response towards the ClO− ions within 5 s, a low detection limit (0.8 × 10−7 M), intense color changes (from purple to light green), excellent selectivity, and reversibility. Importantly, cell imaging experiments show that the probe can identify endogenous ClO− successfully.

In this work, a unique lysosome-targeted BODIPY photosensitizer named BOP-Lyso was designed for photodynamic therapy of cancer cells. The absorption wavelength of BOP-Lyso (10 μM) was located at 650 nm and its molar absorption coefficient was 8.2 × 10 4 cm −1 M −1 . The emission wavelength of BOP-Lyso was at 709 nm. Photosensitizer BOP-Lyso showed excellent ability to produce singlet oxygen and the singlet oxygen yield of photosensitizer BOP-Lyso was calculated to be 43.1% using methylene blue as the reference with near-infrared led light irradiation (660 nm). From MTT (a common method for determining cell survival rate, MTT: 3-(4, 5-dimethyl-2-thiazolyl)-2, 5-diphenyl-2-H-tetrazolium bromide) assay, BOP-Lyso had extremely low dark toxicity (cell viability > 85%) and high photo toxicity. And the IC 50 value of BOP-Lyso was 0.24 μM, which was much lower than the previously reported literature. Besides that, DCFH-DA (2′,7′-Dichlorodihydrofluorescein diacetate) was employed to capture the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in PDT process. Lysosomal colocalization experiments demonstrated that photosensitizer BOP-Lyso had good co-localization capability and the colocalization coefficient was calculated to be 0.92. Furthermore, photosensitizer BOP-Lyso had also been successfully applied to AO/EB cell staining experiments and exhibited excellent results. Moreover, cancer cells (SGC-7901 cells, human gastric carcinoma cells) migration status could be effectively inhibited after NIR led light irradiation with BOP-Lyso. On the whole, taking the above series of data into account, photosensitizer BOP-Lyso would play an important role in actual PDT of cancer cells.

At present, increasing attention is being paid to photothermal therapy corresponding to the second near infrared (NIR-II) range (1000–1700 nanometers); however, its biomedical applications related to carbon-based nanomaterials (CNMs) have always been limited by the large-scale fabrication of excellent diagnostic probes with a suitable size and optical absorption cross-section. Herein, we successfully prepared Bi@C nanoparticles with a suitable size and high output (3.14 g per patch) through a one-pot hydrothermal method. By combining Bi with carbon, the optical absorption in the NIR-II range was enhanced compared to that for single carbon; moreover, Bi@C could no longer be easily oxidized due to the protection of outer C compared with individual Bi. Furthermore, because of the high atomic number of Bi (Z = 83), the Bi@C nanoparticles exhibited computed imaging contrast properties. According to the in vitro and in vivo experiments, the Bi@C nanoparticles could ablate cancer cells under illumination with a 1064 nm laser with deeper penetration and an appropriate permissible exposure (MPE) to the laser (1 W cm−2), showing excellent performance for the diagnosis and treatment of tumors. This study provides a simple method to synthesize metal–carbon nanocomposites to enhance the NIR-II optical absorption efficiency for effective deep-seated tumor photothermal therapy and will further broaden the applications of CNMs.

The efficient utilization of solar light with UV–Vis-NIR spectrum in photocatalytic hydrogen process is a great confusion to explore, towards achieving high-efficient solar-to-fuel conversion. Herein, we firstly endow CdS a full-spectrum photocatalytic H 2 ability by coupling with a full-spectrum absorption material Cs 0.33 WO 3 (CWO). The CWO/CdS photocatalyst reveals the full spectrum photocatalytic ability to produce H 2 of 2648 μmol g −1 h −1 under the full spectrum, 708 μmol g −1 h −1 under visible light, which is 10 times as high as that of pure CdS nanoparticles under visible light, and 16 μmol g −1 h −1 under NIR spectrum (λ > 800 nm). Meanwhile, the composite selectively utilizes solar light: 708 μmol g −1 h −1 under λ > 420 nm and 25 μmol g −1 h −1 under >520 nm, demonstrating the main functional region of visible light is at 400–520 nm, supported by the down and up conversion of the PL analysis. By combining with the analysis, the excellent activity of hydrogen evolution is attributed to the synergistic effect of a z-scheme heterojunction and the localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) of CWO. This work has put forward a novel Z-scheme heterostructure for constructing high-efficient photocatalyst towards providing a new heterostructure combination and opens an insight on the usage of different solar region.
