A hierarchical hollow Ni/Co-codoped MoS2 architecture was successfully prepared using a Ni/Co Prussian Blue analogue as the precursor followed by the solvothermal-assisted insertion of MoS42− and extraction of [Co(CN)6]3− at 200 °C for 32 h. The obtained Ni/Co-codoped MoS2 composite exhibited a hollow microcubic structural characteristic, and the morphology, structure, and chemical compositions were carefully characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), respectively. The Ni/Co-codoped MoS2 composite used as an electrode material featured excellent glucose sensing activity and a high sensitivity of 2546 μA mM−1 cm−2 with a relatively low detection limit of 0.69 μM (S/N = 3). In addition, the Ni/Co-codoped MoS2 composite showed good anti-interference sensing performance in the presence of ascorbic acid (AA), lysine (Lys), cysteine (Cys), urea, H2O2, KCl, and other interferents. These experimental results revealed that the composite is a promising electrode material for enzyme-free glucose sensing, and the feasible synthetic strategy may provide an effective and controlled route to prepare other multi-metal substituted sulfide-based hierarchical structures with high electrochemical sensing performance.

To tackle the devastating microbial infections for the public health, a continuous search for effective and safe nanobiocides based on their prominent nanoscale effects has been extensively explored during past decades. In this study, a green electrolysis method was employed to synthesize silver-doped molybdenum sulfide (Ag@MoS 2 ) composite materials. The obtained nanocomposites exhibited a sheet-like structure with a large specific surface area, which contributed to the efficient loading and refined distribution of silver nanoparticles. G − E. coli and G + S. aureus were used as model bacteria for the antibacterial test, which revealed enhanced antibacterial activity of produced nanocomposites with an identified destructive effect on preformed biofilms. It was found that within 72 hour incubation, 20 μg mL −1 Ag@MoS 2 was sufficient to inhibit the growth of E. coli and S. aureus without visible colony formation, pointing to a desirable long-term antibacterial activity. Further a mechanistic antibiosis study of Ag@MoS 2 indicated the involvement of a generation of reactive oxygen species. Notably, owing to the well-distributed silver nanoparticles on the nontoxic MoS 2 nanosheet, the cytotoxicity evaluation results revealed that produced nanocomposites exhibited negligible toxicity to mammalian cells, and thereby held promising potential for biomedical applications.

MoS 2 is a classical catalyst for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), but the performance is limited by poor electrical transport in c axis, and absent of active sites in (001) planes (basal planes). Simultaneously enhance the layer's interaction and activate the basal plane in MoS 2 is urgent. In this work, a new sight of high pressure and high temperature (HPHT) was presented to modify the microscopic structures, and finally promoting the connection among the layers and activate the basal planes in bulk MoS 2 . It is found that high pressure generates shear between grains, and results stacking faults in structures. The stacking faults can enhance interaction between MoS 2 sandwich layers, and reduce the charge transfer resistance. An intermediate state was captured, which exhibits distortions in structure at 3 GPa, 200 °C. The distortions cause longer or shorter Mo-S bonds, which introduce strains to activate the basal plane. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations show that the distortions can effective reduced the adsorption free energy of H* in MoS 2 basal plane from 1.92 eV to 0.33 eV. So the activity of MoS 2 was modified by HPHT, which indicates better activity than commercial MoS 2 . This work is not only significant to activate catalyst by HPHT, but also important to promote the functional materials.

Defect-rich MoS 2 /r-GO hybrids are successfully synthesized via microwave-assisted solvothermal process, and their electrocatalytic properties for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) are evaluated. The hybrids exhibit low overpotential of 86 mV at 10 mA cm −2 , with a Tafel slope of 44 mV dec −1 as well as promising long-term stability. The activation energy required by HER is 25.4 kJ/mol, and the faraday efficiency reaches 86.3% at −0.16 V (vs. RHE). The attractive performance can be attributed to the abundant defects generated in highly disordered MoS 2 phase, which help to expose a large number of active sites. In addition, the interaction between r-GO and MoS 2 particles promotes the charge transfer process. This work provides a simple strategy for the rational design and mass fabrication of defect-rich MoS 2 -based electrocatalysts for hydrogen evolution reaction.

Ultra-small MoS 2 quantum dots (QDs) with an average size of 2.48 nm coated on Au nanoparticles with a core-satellite structure (Au/MoS 2 QDs) are successfully prepared by a self-assembly strategy through the strong bonding between Au and S. Benefited from the unique structure, the Au/MoS 2 QDs hybrid exhibits outstanding electrocatalytic performance toward hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). The Au/MoS 2 QDs hybrid needs overpotentials of 112, 146, and 206 mV to approach current densities of 10, 20, and 50 mA·cm −2 in 0.5 mol·L −1 H 2 SO 4 (pH = 0.3), respectively. And a low Tafel slope (83 mV·dec −1 ) is obtained. The catalyst also displays satisfactory stability and durability, indicating a negligible current density loss after 20 h of electrolysis. The high hydrogen generation activities and stability are attributed to the great number of active sites, high conductivity and synergistic effects between gold nanoparticles (Au NPs) and MoS 2 QDs. Last but not least, this strategy opens up a favorable way to combine MoS 2 QDs with other metals.

Hydrogen, as the one of clean energy source, has the advantages of high energy density and carbon-free emission. Water electrolysis is one of the most promising ways to generate hydrogen, but the rather high energy required seriously hinders its widespread applications yet. In this study, we report an alkaline electrolyzer to implement energy-saving H 2 generation by coupling cathodic hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) with anodic glucose oxidation reaction (GOR) other than oxygen evolution reaction , in which nickel-doped MoS 2 nanoparticles (Ni–MoS 2 NPs) has been developed as bifunctional electrocatalyst for HER and GOR. The electrolyzer only requires a cell voltage of 1.67 V to reach an electrolysis current density of 10 mA cm −2 , about 270 mV lower than the corresponding value in the traditional electrolyzer. Electrolytic H 2 generation with the assistance of biomass derived materials may open a new way for the future sustainable development.

Molybdenum Sulfide (MoS 2 ) represents an excellent performance non precious electrocatalyst for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). There are some challenges to further improve the HER property of MoS 2 owing to its inferior conductivity, serious aggregation and limited active sites. In this study, Ni 0.15 Co 0.85 S 2 @MoS 2 hybrids are successfully synthesized in a simple hydrothermal method, where Ni-Co Metal Organic Frameworks (NiCo-MOFs) are served as precursors, which hydrothermally react with ammonium molybdate tetrahydrate (H 24 Mo 7 N 6 O 24 ·4H 2 O) and thiourea (CH 4 N 2 S) to obtain a catalyst for HER. As expected, the optimized Ni 0.15 Co 0.85 S 2 @MoS 2 catalyst presents ultrahigh HER property, a low overpotential of 79 mV at 10 mA cm −2 and a Tafel slope of 52 mV dec −1 can be observed in 1.0 M KOH, accompanied by excellent stability. This result displayed in our study could give a new strategy for designing and synthesizing more economical electrocatalysts based on MOFs as precursors in the future.

Abundant electrochemical active sites, high electronic conductivity as well as stable structure and electrochemical activity are indispensable but usually incompatible to the ideal electrocatalysts for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Herein, an efficient and stable MoS 2 -Ti 3 C 2 MXene electrocatalyst is synthesized using a delicately designed one-step hydrothermal method, in which the few-layers thick, edge-oriented, high-percentage 1T′-phase (∼ 85.0 %) MoS 2 nanosheets are well grown on the cation-modified Ti 3 C 2 MXene and stabilize Ti 3 C 2 MXene against spontaneous oxidation caused by dissolved-oxygen. The structure and phase engineering of MoS 2 as well as the fully surface-shielding Ti 3 C 2 MXene endow the as-synthesized MoS 2 -Ti 3 C 2 MXene electrocatalyst with a wealth of accessible active sites and high electrical conductivity for HER together with excellent structure stability. Consequently, the as-synthesized MoS 2 -Ti 3 C 2 MXene exhibits remarkable electrocatalytic HER performance in acidic medium with a low overpotential of 98 mV at 10 mA cm -2 , a depressed Tafel slope of 45 mV dec -1 and a low electrochemical resistance.

In this work, we developed a NH 3 gas sensor based on polyaniline (PANI) composited with MoS 2 nanosheet-coated SnO 2 nanotubes (PMS) via electrostatic spinning, hydrothermal route and in-situ polymerization technique. The morphologies, nanostructures and compositions of the materials were obtained from X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), Transmission electron microscope (TEM) and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller method (BET). Thanks to nanostructure and the synergistic properties of PANI and MoS 2 /SnO 2 , the designed PMS gas sensor exhibited response signal of 10.9 towards 100 ppm NH 3 at room temperature and a low detection limit of 200 ppb with good response-recovery time, good repeatability, acceptable flexibility and excellent selectivity. This study offers a versatile platform to modify PANI for highly selective detection of NH 3 gas sensor at room temperature.

High-performance and environment-friendly biomass-based piezoelectric films have drawn much attention recently. Here, 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine-1-oxyl (TEMPO)-oxidized cellulose nanofibril (TOCN)/molybdenum disulfide (MoS 2 ) nanosheet bionanocomposite piezoelectric films were prepared through an environmentally benign pathway by aqueous dispersion. The TOCN/MoS 2 nanocomposite films exhibited good mechanical properties with the highest Young’s modulus of 8.2 GPa and tensile strength of 307 MPa. When the MoS 2 content was 4 wt%, the longitudinal piezoelectric constant ( d 33 ) of the composite film reached a maximum value of 31 pC/N, much higher than 12 pC/N of the neat TOCN film and other reported cellulose-based piezoelectric films. Moreover, nanogenerators fabricated from TOCN/MoS 2 composite films exhibited a maximum output voltage of 4.1 V and a short-circuit current of 0.21 μA. Furthermore, the current generated by the nanogenerator was rectified and converted to direct current. A 10 μF commercial capacitor was charged to 1.6 V at 120 s, indicating the ability to collect mechanical energy generated in the natural environment. Therefore, the TOCN/MoS 2 composite films are promising in the field of piezoelectric materials and nanogenerators.

In this work, by functionalizing MoS2 quantum dot with 3-aminobenzeneboronic acid, a novel multifunctional quantum dot (denoted as B-MoS2 QD) was obtained and used successfully for a fluorescence nanoprobe for detecting o-dihydroxybenzene (o-DHB). Transmission electron microscopy, fluorescence spectrum, UV-vis spectrum and fluorescence lifetime were used to investigate the prepared nanoprobe. The results show that the B-MoS2 QD nanoprobe can exhibit strong fluorescence and excellent light fastness owing to the coupled effect from the MoS2 QDs and boronic acid; interestingly, the vicinal diols structure from its surface can bridge covalently with o-DHB, resulting in the fluorescence quenching of B-MoS2 QDs and selective recognition toward o-DHB. With the increasing of o-DHB concentration, the nanoprobe fluorescence would gradually decrease. By measuring the fluorescence intensity of B-MoS2 QDs, a wide linear range from 0.1 to 200.0 μM with a low detection limit of 0.025 μM was obtained for o-DHB analysis; meanwhile, this fluorescence nanoprobe possesses excellent selectivity for the selective detection of o-DHB from its analogues.

Herein, a heterogeneous system composed of few-layered MoS2 nanosheets functionalized multichannel hollow carbon nanofibers containing Mo2N (Mo2N–MoS2 MCNFs) was successfully developed for the hydrogen/oxygen evolution reactions (HER/OER). The obtained Mo2N–MoS2 MCNFs manifests superior performance with improved durableness for electrocatalysis. Independently, at 10 mA cm–2, the optimal Mo2N–MoS2(1:1) MCNFs achieves overpotentials (η10) of 131 mV for HER and 270 mV for OER. The intimate interaction between the few-layered MoS2 nanosheets array and 1D multichannel hollow carbon nanofibers Mo2N (Mo2N/Carbon MCNFs) advances better exposure of dynamic heterointerfaces, improves the conductivity of electron transfer, and enriches active sites with efficient mass transport. When employed to drive the water electrolysis, Mo2N–MoS2(1:1) MCNFs also demonstrates a modest overall potential of merely 1.63 V to hit 10 mA cm–2. This study will provide a well-designed structure and development for functional materials in electrochemical energy storage and conversion devices.
