Fabrication of mixed matrix membranes based on PVDF matrix and ZrT-1-NH2 filler for efficient adsorptive removal of Orange G

Bao-Xu Jiang,Shuang-Bao Li,Ting-Ting Xu,Jian Li,Yu-Teng Zhang

Adsorption membranes have become a hot spot for wastewater treatment in recent years. Due to the lack of active sites in traditional inert materials such as polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) membranes, it is difficult to bind pollutants in water with high affinity. Therefore, in this study, ZrT-1-NH 2 /PVDF mixed matrix membranes (MMMs) were prepared by combining an amino-functionalized Zr-based metal–organic cage (ZrT-1-NH 2 ) with a polymer substrate via non-solvent-induced phase separation method for the efficient removal of Orange G (OG) from water. This method has many advantages such as simplicity in operation, high applicability, controllable MOFs loading. The structural characteristics and adsorption properties and of MMMs were also investigated through a series of characterizations and experiments. The result shows that in a 100 mL OG solution with an initial concentration of 50 mg/L and pH=3, M60 exhibited significant adsorption capacity, the removal efficiency reached 97.23 %, with an adsorption capacity of 64.18 mg/g, which is much higher than the pristine PVDF membrane. It is mainly attributed to electrostatic interactions and hydrogen bonding interactions between ZrT-1-NH 2 and OG molecules. This is consistent with the DFT calculations. The introduction of ZrT-1-NH 2 filler improves the performance of PVDF membranes and expands their potential applications.

Alginate-PVDF piezoelectric hydrogel containing calcium copper titanate- hydroxyapatite as a self-powered scaffold for bone tissue engineering and energy harvesting

Y. Khazani,E. Rafiee,A. Samadi,M. Mahmoodi

We have developed a piezoelectric hydrogel composite comprising cross-linked polyvinylidene fluoride-sodium alginate (PVDF-SA) and calcium copper titanate nanowires (CCTO) as the piezoelectric filler, and hydroxyapatite nanoparticles (HA) as the mineral filler. A freeze-drying method was used to prepare piezoelectric hydrogel scaffold. The PVDF/SA-CCTOs-HA hydrogel composite with 0.5% CCTO and 0.4% HA content demonstrated significantly improved piezoelectric performance. Specifically, it exhibited the highest piezoelectric performance among all samples, with V OC of 7 V and I SC of 3.5 μA. These values were 5.5 and 4.9 times higher, than those of the pure PVDF-SA hydrogel scaffold. The rheology studies explored the viscoelastic properties of hydrogel and found that the hydrogel's solid characteristics led to a higher elastic modulus in comparison to the viscous modulus. The composite exhibited higher compressive and tensile strengths at 8.2 and 0.8 MPa, respectively, compared to the pure hydrogel, which has strengths of 6.3 and 0.4 MPa. In vitro studies revealed the good cytocompatibility, cell proliferation of MC3T3-E1 cells on piezoelectric composite. The PVDF-SA/CCTO-HA demonstrated significant antibacterial properties, offering further advantages for its practical applications. The hydrogel composite can identify various human activities, such as wrist and elbow movements, finger pressing and releasing, and heel pressure. Furthermore, it demonstrated its energy storage capability by charging a 1 μF capacitor. This work offers a practical approach to fabricate hydrogel scaffolds possessing favorable piezoelectric characteristics, biocompatibility, robust mechanical properties, and enhanced proliferation, thereby enabling their extensive utilization in bone tissue engineering applications, human movement detection, and energy harvesting.

Organic–Inorganic Modification of PVDF Membranes by PDA@ZnO and PDA@MgO Nanoparticles for Enhanced Performance of Organic Dye Wastewater Treatment

Yiming Wu,Jing Yang,Ruifeng Zhang,Hongji Li,Ruihua Mu,Yamei Zhao

Polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) membranes represent a potential technology for the in-depth treatment of organic dye-containing wastewater. Nevertheless, the intractable membrane fouling and the limited versatility have significantly constrained its applications. Herein, through the nonsolvent-induced phase inversion method, we have successfully fabricated the PDA@MgO/PVDF and PDA@ZnO/PVDF membranes, which are modified by the synergistic action of MgO or ZnO nanoparticles with polydopamine (PDA), respectively. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), as well as the analyses of pore structure, contact angle, and surface free energy, were utilized to characterize the hybrid membranes. The results demonstrate that the modification of PDA@MgO and PDA@ZnO can enhance the hydrophilicity, pure flux, dye rejection, and pollution resistance of PVDF membranes. The enhanced hydrophilicity of the modified membranes results from the increase in surface free energy and its polar component term. Comparatively, the PDA@ZnO/PVDF membrane exhibits a smaller contact angle (69°) and a higher pure water flux (378.63 L/m2·h·bar), whereas the PDA@MgO/PVDF membrane possesses greater mechanical strength and better antifouling performance. The PDA@MgO/PVDF membrane can achieve a rejection rate of 94.6% for disperse deep blue 79, and the flux recovery rate can reach approximately 82%. This research offers novel insights into the application of PVDF membranes for the treatment of organic dye-containing wastewater.

Piezoelectric core–shell microstructure-based PVDF nanogenerator with enhanced electrical/mechanical properties for self-powered wireless tactile recognition/speed monitoring systems

Bozhi Wu,Lei Wang,Hui Xu,Dongdong Zhang,Jiahong Kang,Yongqiang Yang,Kuibo Yin,Meng Nie,Litao Sun

With the development of artificial intelligence (AI) and the Internet of Things, self-supplied piezoelectric devices based on polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) have attracted widespread attention. However, the piezoelectric output of PVDF is limited, and there is a contradiction between improving piezoelectric performance and maintaining mechanical properties. Herein, a piezoelectric core–shell microstructure- based PVDF nanogenerator with enhanced piezoelectric/mechanical performance is proposed by coaxial electrospinning process. The core–shell microstructure improves the piezoelectric properties through the synergistic effect between the piezoelectric core and shell, while the cladding of the shell helps to maintain the mechanical properties. Moreover, the mechanism of enhanced piezoelectric synergistic effect is revealed by COMSOL simulation. The presented nanogenerators based on AlN-core–shell microstructures outputs is up to 65 V, a 2.3-fold improvement over AlN-doped nanogenerators, along with a 164 % increase in strain. Importantly, the capability of BTO and ZnO core–shell microstructures to enhance piezoelectric/mechanical performance is demonstrated, which proves the proposed strategy is a scalable method. Furthermore, a self-powered wireless tactile recognition and speed monitoring system are developed by combining AI algorithm technology and acquisition circuitry. The recognition accuracy of deformation and shape recognition reached 98.62 % and 98.81 %, respectively. The speed monitoring system can be applied to road interval speed detection. This study provides a new approach to improve the electrical and mechanical properties of PVDF-based nanogenerators, offering favorable support for the application of PVDF-based devices in fields including energy harvesting, device integration, flexible electronics, and human–computer interaction.

Oxygen vacancy-enriched TiO2 nanosheets filled PVDF electrolyte for semi-solid-state batteries: Synergistic effects of conformational transition and defect sites

Shuai Chen,Jia Guo,Hu Zang,Changjiang Liu,Nan Yu,Baoyou Geng

The advancement of polymer solid electrolytes is essential for the development of solid-state lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). Polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF), recognized for its unique piezoelectric properties and hydrophobicity, emerges as a promising candidate for polymer solid-state electrolyte applications. Nevertheless, its practical usage is hindered by low ionic conductivity at room temperature. To overcome this limitation, we engineered a novel PVDF/LiTFSI/TiO 2 -ov (PLTO) electrolyte by incorporating oxygen-rich vacancy titanium dioxide with PVDF, resulting in significant enhancements in both ionic conductivity and mechanical performance—crucial factors for the long-term stability of batteries. D33 measurements and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy analyses revealed an increase in the β-phase (TTTT conformation) content of the doped PVDF, which substantially contributes to the improved piezoelectric performance. Furthermore, density functional theory (DFT) analysis indicated that oxygen vacancies facilitate the decomposition of lithium salts and enhance anion adsorption, thereby boosting ion transport efficiency. When integrated into a Li/PLTO/LiFePO 4 semi-solid-state battery, this electrolyte membrane achieved an impressive specific capacity of 154.22 mAh/g at room temperature and 0.5 C, maintaining 95.31 % capacity over 850 cycles, demonstrating exceptional durability. Additionally, lithium/lithium symmetric batteries constructed with PLTO exhibited long-term stability exceeding 3800 hours. The stability of this battery in practical applications, such as LED lighting and subtitle control, underscores its practicality and potential contribution to energy sustainability. This study offers new perspectives for the development of high-performance electrolyte membranes.

Spatially hierarchical hydrophilic coatings on PVDF membranes by vacuum deposition for efficient separation of oil-in-water emulsions and dye wastewaters

Ahai Zhu,Jian Zheng,Zhijia Zhu,Chunyan Hu,Baojiang Liu

Oil scaling poses a significant threat to the stability of membrane separation flux during the process of oil-water emulsion separation. A single hydrophilic modified layer demonstrates the capability to effectively separate emulsions. However, it does not prevent severe water flux degradation. Although the “dual-defense” design has been proposed, the construction of a double hydrophilic anti-fouling process on the surface of the membrane is prone to clogging of the membrane, and the surface is difficult to regulate. Here, we designed a two-layer antifouling strategy using vacuum deposition method, in which the first barrier is formed by dopamine (DA) and polyethyleneimine (PEI)-coated carbon nanotubes (CNTs), and the second barrier is formed by a polyelectrolyte complex of phytic acid (PA) and polyethyleneimine (PEI) encapsulating the first barrier, which is deposited on the surface of AT-PVDF membranes. The spatial hierarchical structure provides a highly covered “double defense” barrier on the membrane surface, effectively preventing the adhesion of grease and dirt. In the separation of surfactant-stabilised oil-in-water emulsions, the emulsion separation efficiency reaches 99.8 %, and the water flux recovery rate is more than 90 % after cyclic separation. And the potential mechanism of underwater antifouling self-cleaning was analysed by density flood theory (DFT) calculations. In particular, the multilayer composite membrane was able to effectively adsorb cationic dyes in wastewater through the electrostatic effect of the first and second barriers, with a separation efficiency of more than 95 %. Therefore, the prepared superhydrophilic multilayer composite membrane has potential application prospects in the field of wastewater purification.

Water flow-driven high piezo-photocatalytic efficacy in superthin and densely porous GO-TiO2/PVDF-HFP composite film for ROS generation

Jialin Zhuang,Yechen Wang,Liping Lin,Jiaying Xiao,Jiahui Cai,Yingmo Hu,Qi An

Reactive oxygen species (ROS) as highly oxidative substances play significant roles in environmental matter cycling. Despite their high potential in environmental regulation, effective artificial ROS generation techniques are still in the primary stage. In this study, we propose an effective piezo-photocatalytic film for ROS generation in water flow and under light irradiation. The high ROS generation capability stem from the special suprathin and highly porous structure obtained using our developed spray-drying technique to prepare the composite film. During the spray process, optimized component of graphene oxide, TiO 2 nanoparticles, and Poly(vinylidene fluoride- co -hexafluoropropylene) (PVDF-HFP) polymer chains self-organized to effective piezoelectrically and photocatalytically active assemblies, and highly porous structures are formed during the drying process. Especial mechanical sensibility to deform is realized in response to external force as weak as 0.2 N. The enhanced piezoelectricity of the PVDF-HFP microdomain, the narrowed band gap, and the electron transfer across the interfacial heterojunction between graphene and TiO 2 all contribute to the especially high piezo-photocatalytic capabilities. Water flow can effectively trigger the piezoelectric field generation in the film, which remarkably boost extractable charge carriers generated upon light irradiation. 88.05 % degradation efficiency of Rhodamine B during 15 min and 95.2 % degradation efficiency of ciprofloxacin in 120 min are realized, along with bacteriostat capabilities. The application potential of the composite are demonstrated in dest-top laundry process and the treated stained water can be used to cultivate plant. We expect the strategy to develop into a novel form of cleaning technique.

Supramolecular complexation of metal oxide clusters in PVDF-PVP blends for large scale fabrication of proton exchange membranes for fuel cells

Aowen Huang,Chen Dong,Yiren Gao,Lu Liu,Xiaoshan Yan,Panchao Yin

The perfluorosulfonic acid (PFSA) polymers have achieved great success as proton exchange membranes (PEMs) in various energy storage and conversion devices; nevertheless, the improvements regarding PEMs' synthetic cost, mechanical properties, stability and processability are still urgently required. Herein, 1 nm super acidic metal oxide cluster, H 3 PW 12 O 40 (PW 12 ), is complexed with the blends of polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) and polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) to afford nanocomposite PEMs that enables the stable and effective operation of hydrogen fuel cell devices. As the polymer matrix , the PVDF is blended with PVP via inter-chain hydrogen bonding to provide mechanical support for the nanocomposite PEMs. The further introduced PW 12 clusters can interact strongly with PVP via electrostatic attraction to enhance the PEMs' mechanical strength (E = 231 MPa) and prevent the leaching of PW 12 for long-term stability. Meanwhile, the incorporation of the super acidic PW 12 can facilitate the fast proton transportation and therefore, lead to the significant increasement of proton conductivity to 9.8 × 10 −3  S cm −1 at 70 °C and 100% RH. Due to the excellent mechanical properties and the supramolecular interaction among the components, the PEMs’ thickness can be controlled to be challenging ∼10μm for feasible large-scale continuous processing. Finally, the molecular design enables the successful fabrication of the nanocomposite PEMs into fuel cell devices with the power density as 342.8 mW cm −2 . The studies not only shed light on the structure-properties of polymer nanocomposites , but also pave avenues to the design of robust composite PEMs for fuel cell appliacations.

Synergistic catalytic filtration using Co-C/PVDF blending membrane activated by peroxymonosulfate: Fouling control and DOM transformation in real textile wastewater

Di Liu,Yan Wang,Xue He,Shasha Liu,Wei Kong,Hui Zhang,Qiyao Chen,Zhenxia Song,Hai Tang

Ultrafiltration is widely employed for the advanced treatment of real textile wastewater; however, it encounters significant challenges of low separation efficiency and severe membrane fouling caused by residual organic matter (DOM) present in the conventionally treated biodegradable effluent. This study developed a blending membrane by incorporating cobalt-carbon (Co-C) nanocomposites, derived from ZIF-67, with polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) for synergistic filtration and peroxymonosulfate (PMS)-activated radical oxidation of real textile wastewater. The results indicate that an efficient removal of 62.9 % of total organic carbon-based DOM was achieved through online filtration-oxidation at a PMS concentration of 0.5 g/L, which is 3.7 times greater than the performance of pristine PVDF filtration. Furthermore, the system exhibited exceptional antifouling properties, evidenced by a flux recovery rate (FRR) of 71.2 % and a reduction in irreversible fouling ratio (R ir =22.7 %), attributed to the in-situ oxidative degradation of foulants. Molecular-level analysis using three-dimensional fluorescence excitation-emission matrix and fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry revealed that SO 4 •− /•OH radicals preferentially degraded aromatic DOM components. The membrane’s surface roughness reduction and loose foulant layer formation further alleviated fouling. This work provides a preliminary data for textile wastewater remediation and deepens the mechanistic understanding of catalytic membrane processes.

Anti-fouling PVDF composite membrane with SBMA@AgNPs hybrid separation layer: Fabrication, performance and organic-inorganic coupling synergistic enhancement antifouling mechanism

Jianyu Wang,Junjie Yang,Zhenyu Cui

In this study, the flat-sheet membrane of polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF)/polystyrene-maleic anhydride (SMA) was fabricated via the thermally induced phase separation (TIPS) technique. Subsequently, a dual-functional anti-fouling hybrid separation layer was developed by co-immobilizing zwitterionic SBMA and silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) onto the polymer membrane upper surface through Michael addition reaction and in-situ dopamine generation method. An organic-inorganic hybrid layer exhibiting dual resistance to both protein fouling and microbial fouling was constructed via the "SBMA-AgNPs" synergistic modification strategy. Furthermore, the antifouling mechanism and performance of the membrane system were systematically investigated. The results demonstrated that when BSA and Escherichia coli (E. coli) were employed as organic and microbial foulant models respectively, the membrane loaded with both zwitterionic SBMA and inorganic AgNPs achieved a flux recovery ratio (FRR) of 96.8 % and antibacterial efficiency exceeding 99.9 %, significantly outperforming membranes loaded with only either AgNPs or SBMA. Meanwhile, the irreversible resistance during operation reduced to 4.5 % and the pure water flux (PWF) decay rate reduced to 20.7 %. Finally, based on the evaluation of the long-term stability and FRR of post-backwashing, the synergistic enhancement anti-fouling mechanism of "organic-inorganic" coupling was elucidated by combining the hydration layer theory of zwitterionic SBMA and the antibacterial mechanism of AgNPs. This study offers novel insights and approaches for the future advancements of water treatment membrane technology.

Synergistically enhanced PVDF-based nanofiber membranes randomly embedded with ZnWO4@PDA nanorods for self-powered sensors with multi-mode free switching

Hui Wang,Haijiao Lin,Shuhong Huang,Ling Li,Youwei Zhao,Wenming Zhang

In spite of the high level of attention paid to multifunctional sensors, the flexible and multifunctionality are still intractable challenges to be tackled. Herein, we design a flexible, hydrophobic and stable multifunctional sensing material by electrostatic spinning of PVDF/ZnWO 4 @PDA (PZP). The incorporation of ZnWO 4 @PDA into PVDF nanofibers can act as an effective nucleating agent and photosensitizer, which increases the polar crystalline phase and photovoltaic properties of PVDF. With the synergy of PVDF and ZnWO 4 @PDA, PZP based piezoelectric sensors offer significantly superior electrical output (28.4 V, 600 nA) and high sensitivity (1.04 V/kPa). Moreover, it is particularly surprising that photoelectric sensor based on PZP textiles has excellent optical properties, as confirmed by the response / recovery time (0.6 s / 0.66 s) of simulated sunlight detection. Piezoelectric photoelectric effect exists in PZP textiles, as evidenced by the significant increase in the strain output current of photoelectric sensor when irradiated with sunlight. Furthermore, based on the coupling of piezoelectric effect and triboelectric effect of PZP composite, the contact out nano-triboelectric generator has enhanced the electrical output and electromechanical conversion efficiency. Therefore, this work has successfully prepared multifunctional sensing materials that integrate pressure sensing, audio recognition, underwater communication, optoelectronic detection and triboelectric energy collection, paving a new way for the flexible multifunctional sensors.

Enhancement of electrochemical performance in PVDF-co-HFP cation exchange membrane with modifications by doping PP13-TFSI ionic liquid and sulfonation

Bo Sun,Xiaona Pan,Yu Tian,Wenlong Bi,Menglin Feng,Fenwu Liu,Qingjie Hou

Microbial fuel cells (MFCs) represent a promising clean energy technology with significant application potential. However, their implementation is constrained by the limitations of current membrane materials. Polyvinylidene fluoride-hexafluoropropylene (PVDF-co-HFP) is a material that has garnered interest in the field of electrochemical systems because of its facile moldability into various shapes and sizes of membranes, positioning it as a highly promising alternative to high-cost commercial membranes. Nevertheless, enhancing its electrochemical characterization remains a pivotal challenge to be surmounted for its broad adoption. In this study, an efficient PVDF-co-HFP membrane, augmented with PP13-TFSI ionic liquid and sulfonation (Membrane P-I&S), was successfully synthesized, and its potential as an ion exchange membrane in MFCs was evaluated. The findings indicated that chlorosulfonic acid considerably enhances the hydrophilicity and proton transport properties of PVDF-co-HFP, with the ionic liquid posited as an effective means to augment the sulfonation effect. An MFCs incorporating Membrane P-I&S demonstrated a remarkable current production capacity and power density, exceeding those of the unmodified membrane by more than two and threefold, respectively. In addition, the MFCs based on Membrane P-I&S displayed prolonged cycling stability with a notably porous architecture and enhanced biofouling resistance. This study validates the development of a high-efficiency, cost-effective, and environmentally friendly membrane fabrication approach for application in bioelectrochemical systems. This will help promote the application of MFCs in the field of wastewater treatment and resource recovery.
