Co-tuning composition and channel-rich structure of Ag-Pd alloys toward sensitive electrochemical biosensing

Yang Yang,Yijin Shu,Yinqiong Wu,Qingsheng Gao

Noble-metal nanostructures are promising for biosensing applications owing to their fantastic physicochemical properties, but the rational design of their easy-accessible and reactive surface is still challenging. This work is devoted to the interfacial engineering of Ag-Pd alloys, including tuning alloy composition and geometric structure, to promote the electrochemical biosensing performance. Through a co-tuning tactic with controlled reduction, channel-rich Ag 1 Pd 3 alloys with optimal electronic configurations and accessible active surface are successfully obtained, which afford high sensitivity, outstanding selectivity and excellent repeatability to detect H 2 O 2 and glucose biomarkers. As experimentally and theoretically evidenced, tailoring the composition of Ag-Pd alloys ameliorates electronic configurations due to ligand effects, which can optimize the binding with the key intermediate of OH*, and thereby boost electrochemical kinetic steps on surface. Meanwhile, tuning geometric structure with abundant channels enables fast transport of analytes toward largely-exposed active sites. Providing an atomic-level interpretation of structure-dependent biosensing, this work is anticipated to offer guidelines for the development of efficient sensing platforms.

Synthesis of Ag/GO nanocomposite with promising photocatalytic ability for reduction reaction of p-nitrophenol

Pham Tan Thi,Le Van Thang,Tran Van Khai,Tran Xuan Diem,Chau Ngoc Trong Nghia,Tran Thi Thanh Ngan,Le Minh Tri,Nguyen Ngoc Vinh,Nguyen Minh Hien

p-Aminophenol (PAP) is an important intermediate reagent in the synthesis of paracetamol, widely used as an analgesic and antipyretic drug. Therefore, finding an effective catalyst to improve PAP synthesis efficiency is worth studying. Among those studies, nanocomposite is the most promising material. In this study, Ag/GO nanocomposites were synthesized by reducing silver nitrate on graphene oxide (GO) with sodium borohydride as a reducing agent and characterized by SEM, EDX, XRD and UV–vis methods. The catalytic ability was investigated based on the hydrogenation reaction of p-nitrophenol (PNP). We successfully synthesized Ag/GO nanocomposite with relatively homogeneous distributions and similar particle sizes. The results showed that Ag/GO nanocomposite has an excellent catalytic activity with the yield of reduction reaction at 97%, 3 min. Moreover, this photocatalyst can easily be recovered and reused three times without any reaction efficiency reduction. We also successfully synthesized and crystallized PAP with high purity and the total yield of 45.82%. The results show that Ag/GO nanocomposite is an excellent catalyst for high-performance reactions with many useful properties, such as easily recovered and repetitive used. On top of that, Ag/GO nanocomposite is safe, less toxic and environmentally friendly.

Core-shell magnetic Ag-molecularly imprinted composite for surface enhanced Raman scattering detection of carbaryl

Emily C. Cheshari,Xiaohui Ren,Xin Li

Surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) is a promising technique for rapid detection of pesticide residues. However, conventional SERS substrates require extraction processes which are time consuming and they also lack selectivity, stability and reproducibility. Herein, we present a multifunctional stable zero-valent iron based core-shell substrate. It combines magnetic separation, selective adsorption by molecular imprinting technique and sensitive detection of carbaryl by SERS. The core-shell substrate was successfully prepared by immobilizing silver on the surface of zero-valent iron microspheres. Subsequent molecular imprinting on the bimetallic magnetic silver microspheres ensured selective removal and detection. The substrate exhibited magnetization saturation of 8.89 emu/g providing efficient analyte separation. It showed high sensitivity and selectivity toward carbaryl detection to nanomolar concentration level. Linear regression models for peaks at Raman shift 1599 cm−1 and 2233 cm−1 demonstrated a good linear fit with R2=0.9738 and R2=0.8952 respectively. The composite was successfully applied on spiked water samples resulting in average recovery rate of 89%. The findings of this study demonstrate great substrate potential for application in separation and detection of trace quantities of chemical contaminants for environment safety and protection.

SiO2-Coated Ag Nanoparticles for Conversion of Terminal Alkynes to Propolic Acids via CO2 Insertion

Minkang Li,Lina Zhang,Zhongzheng Zhang,Jialin Shi,Yuefeng Liu,Jiansong Chen,Nannan Sun,Wei Wei

Integration of adequate activity, stability, and productivity in a catalyst is of strategical importance to achieve high performance, particularly for inactive reactants, e.g., CO2. Here, using a reversed microemulsion method, ultrafine metallic Ag nanoparticles coated with porous SiO2 can be facilely obtained using micelles as separated nanoreactors for the preparation. Such architectures allowed the rigid SiO2 matrices to act as physical spacers, so that aggregation of the Ag particles could be avoided. Meanwhile, due to the templating effect from the surfactant, large mesopores could be induced in the SiO2 shell, and thus the diffusion barrier of reactants could be minimized. When used as a heterogeneous catalyst for carboxylation of terminal alkynes by CO2 under mild conditions, the prepared xAg@SiO2 catalysts showed extraordinary performance in terms of excellent activity, stability, productivity, and wide substrate scope. The knowledge developed here may also enrich the toolbox for performance promotion of metal catalysts via specially fabricated structures.

Development of RGO@MoS2@Ag ternary nanocomposites with tunable geometry structure for recyclable SERS detection

Ying Chen,Hongmei Liu,Xiuting Li,Shiwei Tang,Chenjie Gu,Guodong Wei,Tao Jiang,Xingfei Zhou

Molybdenum disulfide (MoS 2 ) with promising photocatalytic activity has attracted great attention in constructing recyclable SERS substrate. Reduced graphene oxide (RGO) was chose here to in-situ grow MoS 2 nanoflowers and effectively adjust the active area of the substrate. After the decoration of Ag nanoparticles by photo-reduction, a sophisticated RGO@MoS 2 @Ag ternary nanocomposite with a maximizing SERS enhancement factor (EF) of 8.6 × 10 6 and a prominent solar photocatalytic efficiency was demonstrated. Such superior features of the nanocomposite were revealed to be endowed by the synergistic effect of the three components including the active sites of MoS 2 , the “Schottky barrier” and “hot spots” between MoS 2 and Ag, together with the molecular enrichment surface and chemical enhancement ability of RGO . An ultra-sensitive SERS-based detection and a reliable photocatalytic degradation of mixed trace molecules were finally achieved by the developed optimal ternary nanocomposite, which can meet manifold requirements for the routine supervision of biochemical molecules.

Constructing supported Ag antibacterial nano-agent with high activity and stability for broad-spectrum antibiosis

Haibin Xue,Xuewei Gao,Xiangnan Feng,Shan He,Feifei Zhao,Guiju Zhang,Xinrui Wang,Xiaobo Luo,Shanyue Guan

The developing a green and facile synthetic approach of Ag-based antibacterial nanomaterials with controlled composition, size, and shape, to acquire high antibacterial activity and long-term durability, is of vital importance and remains a challenging goal. Herein, a novel LDHs-supported Ag antibacterial nanomaterial (Ag/CoAl-LDHs) are fabricated via an in situ deposition of the Ag nanoparticles onto the CoAl-LDHs surface. X-ray diffraction pattern (XRD) and High-resolution TEM (HRTEM) measurements confirm that the uniform Ag nanoparticles (the average particle size of 16.5 nm) are highly dispersed and firmly anchored onto CoAl-LDHs surface. As revealed by x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), the CoAl-LDHs nanoplates play the roles of both a support and a reductant without any external, and there was a redox reaction between Co2+ in LDHs layers and Ag+ in AgNO3 solution, giving rise to in situ loading of Ag nanoparticles onto LDHs. Moreover, antibacterial experiments verify that Ag/CoAl-LDHs not only have efficient antibacterial activity against both Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus, but also exhibit very stable antibacterial properties for both bacteria. Therefore, this research demonstrates a successful paradigm for the rational design and preparation of new antibacterial nanomaterials with high antibacterial activity and long-term durability.

Colorimetric detection of water content in organic solvents via a smartphone with fluorescent Ag nanoclusters

Ningxin Kong,Hao Yuan,Huangmei Zhou,Yu Zhao,Sanjun Zhang

We detected the water content in ethanol and dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) solvents via a smartphone with the help of fluorescent Ag nanoclusters (Ag NCs). The Ag NCs intrinsically have two emission peaks, among which the long-wavelength emission intensified with decreasing water content due to the aggregation induced emission enhancement (AIEE) effect, but in contrast the short-wavelength emission was relatively insensitive to water content. This fact makes the Ag NCs an ideal colorimetric indicator of water content in organic solvents. A smartphone was applied to take pictures of Ag NC samples and read the R, G, and B values from the images. When the water content increased from 20% to 55% in ethanol, the G/B values displayed a good linear relationship with the water content, and a limit of detection (LOD) of 4.48% was achieved. Moreover, good consistency was observed when the colorimetric fluorescent Ag NCs were applied to detect water content in real samples such as white wine and medical alcohol. These studies demonstrated a convenient and practical method for the detection of water content via a smartphone.

Ag nanoparticle-decorated SiO2@TiO2 hierarchical microspheres improve the efficiency of dye-sensitized solar cells

Sun Junchen,Fang Min,Zhu Weiju,Wu Zhenyu,Li Cun

SiO 2 @TiO 2 -Ag (STA) microspheres decorated with Ag nanoparticles (Ag NPs) were prepared and assembled into the photoanode. The photoanode composed of STA microspheres and TiO 2 nanoparticles (P25) was prepared by doctor blade method. UV–vis measurement indicates that the introduction of a few STA microspheres observably enhances the light scattering and capturing ability of the photoanode. The photoelectric conversion efficiency of the DSSCs with 2wt% STA photoanode increased to 7.4% from 4.3% comparing with pure P25 TiO 2 nanoparticles. The configuration DSSCs have the maximum short circuit current density ( J sc ) of 16.0 mA cm −2 and open-circuit voltage ( V oc ) of 0.780 V, which are significantly higher than the pure TiO 2 DSSCs. The significant improvement of the DSSCs performance can be due to the synergistic effect of the superior light scattering of STA and the localized surface plasma resonance (LSPR) effect of Ag NPs modified on the microspheres surface.

MXene@Ag-based ratiometric electrochemical sensing strategy for effective detection of carbendazim in vegetable samples

Wei Zhong,Feng Gao,Jin Zou,Shuwu Liu,Mingfang Li,Yansha Gao,Yongfang Yu,Xiaoqiang Wang,Limin Lu

In this paper, a novel ratiometric electrochemical sensor for carbendazim (CBZ) detection was constructed by a composite of MXene@Ag nanoclusters and amino-functionalized multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MXene@AgNCs/NH 2 -MWCNTs). The Ag nanoclusters (AgNCs) embedded in the MXene not only could inhibit the aggregation of MXene flakes and enhance the electrocatalytic ability, but also serve as an internal reference probe for the ratiometric electrochemical detection. Moreover, the introduction of NH 2 -MWCNTs can further improve the electrochemical signals of CBZ and Ag, resulting in the enhanced signal amplification and higher sensitivity. Based on these characteristics of the MXene@AgNCs/NH 2 -MWCNTs composite, the proposed sensor exhibits a favorable linear relationship between I CBZ /I AgNCs and the concentration of CBZ ranging from 0.3 nM to 10 μM and a low limit of detection of 0.1 nM. Moreover, the proposed ratiometric electrochemical sensing platform also demonstrates high selectivity, good reproducibility, secular stability, and satisfactory applicability in vegetable samples.

A facile SERS strategy to detect glucose utilizing tandem enzyme activities of Au@Ag nanoparticles

Xuemin Xia,Yijin Weng,Lei Zhang,Ruyi Tang,Xia Zhang

Surface-Enhanced Raman Scattering (SERS) is a powerful analysis technology, attracting more and more attention due to its high sensitivity and selectivity. Herein, we report a simple seed-mediated method to synthesize Au@Ag nanoparticles (NPs) as a multifunctional biosensor for the label-free detection of hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ) and glucose by SERS. Au@Ag NPs, as an ultrasensitive SERS substrate, show the dual activities (peroxidase-like and GOx-like activities). Under the condition of pH 4.0 NaAc buffer solution, the glucose and H 2 O can be catalyzed by Au@Ag NPs to produce glucose acid and H 2 O 2 , and then H 2 O 2 can oxidize 3,3′,5,5′-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) to form a blue oxidation product oxidic TMB (oxTMB) which exhibits strong SERS signals at 1188, 1330, 1605 cm −1 . Thus, we have developed a new SERS strategy for analysis of glucose with a detection limit of 5 × 10 − 10   mol   L −1 , suggesting that Au@Ag NPs have the potential for biosensor, immunoassay and medical treatment.

Reaction-based fluorescent silk probes with high sensitivity and selectivity to Hg2+ and Ag+ ions

Li Xiao,Kaiqi Liu,Lian Duan,Xinjian Cheng

The detection and removal of heavy metals in the environment is urgent and meaningful. In this work, two types of fluorescent functionalized silks OSP and ASP have been prepared using worm silk as the substrate. These fluorescent silk probes exhibit an obvious fluorescence quenching effect in the presence of Hg2+ or Ag+, enabling silk to specifically detect Hg2+ or Ag+. An obvious color response occurs under visible light, from yellow to brown or gray, thereby realizing dual-channel identification of fluorescence and colorimetry. In addition, its sensing mechanism has been studied, and it is found that the probe reacts with metal ions as a reactive response. Compared with the fluorescent probes bearing one CC/CC bond, the probes with two terminal CC/CC bonds are more sensitive. And the excellent recognition ability can make the limit of detection as low as 0.25 μM. This indicates that silk fluorescent probes can be used to detect Hg2+ and/or Ag+.

Large-area uniform Ag nanostructure films prepared by a heat reduction method for SERS application

Qingqing Zhang,Qingqing Zhang,Xueqin Wang,Xueqin Wang,Jinguo Jiang,Hen Yao,Qian Nie,Zhongchen Bai,Zhongchen Bai

We prepared an active large-area uniform Ag nanostructure film by using the thermally reducing polyvinyl alcohol (PVA)/silver nitrate (AgNO3) composite film for surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) application. The PVA/AgNO3 composite films were spin-coated on the surface of indium tin oxide (ITO) glass, and then were heated to about 500 °C for 10 minutes, forming Ag nanostructure films with a thickness of 100 nm and a large area of 3.24 cm2. The results showed that single layer Ag nano-film had a network structure with a skeleton distribution. Moreover, the large ratio of Ag nanostructure to film area was about 63%. Using melamine molecules as a probe, the maximum enhancement factor of the SERS signal could reach 1149, and the SERS sensitivity and the minimum detection limit were respectively up to 76.91 and 3.85 ng/ml. This method of preparing SERS film can provide a new pathway for the application of low-cost and large-area SERS substrates.
