An Al2O3-coated stainless steel wire mesh packing was prepared, aiming to serve as the monolithic catalyst support applied in a rotating packed bed (RPB) reactor. Before the application, the wetting behavior and gas–liquid mass transfer performance of Al2O3-coated wire mesh packing were investigated in this work. The results showed that the Al2O3-coated stainless steel fiber had on average 18.8% longer liquid spreading length compared with the uncoated stainless steel fiber. The gas–liquid effective interfacial area (ae) and the volumetric liquid-side mass transfer coefficient (kLae) of the RPB with Al2O3-coated wire mesh packing were on average 25.9 and 45.7% higher than those with uncoated wire mesh packing, respectively. The Al2O3-coated wire mesh packing has great prospects for the catalytic reactions in the RPB reactor by providing double functions of mass transfer intensification and the monolithic catalyst support.

The key to developing laser-driven solid-state lighting lies in high-performance color converters, which must be thermally robust under the high-power density excitation of a laser. Phosphor-in-glass (PiG) films are considered as a kind of promising color converter for laser lighting, but the poor thermal dissipation of the glass matrix will cause large thermal quenching of the PiG films and hence low luminous flux of lighting sources. In this work, Al2O3 particles, acting as a heat transfer medium, are introduced into the La3Si6N11:Ce3+ (LSN:Ce3+) PiG film to form a composite color converter for realizing high-brightness laser lighting. By optimizing the ratio of glass frits to Al2O3 as well as the film thickness, the Al2O3–LSN:Ce3+ composite PiG film shows a luminance saturation threshold of 23.08 W mm−2, which is 26.3% higher than that of the Al2O3-free LSN:Ce3+ PiG film (18.27 W mm−2). The luminous flux of the composite PiG film under blue laser excitation is improved by 51.4% and reaches 3120 lm, and the luminous flux of the laser-driven white light can reach up to 2886 lm. It indicates that the Al2O3–LSN:Ce3+ composite PiG film would be an interesting color converter for producing high-brightness laser-driven white light.

Integrated Capture and Methanation of CO 2 (ICCM) with H 2 produced from renewable energy is a novel Power-to-Gas technology. The combination of ICCM with CO 2 point source, such as coal-fired power plant, is anticipated, which greatly motivates the investigations into the influences of coal ash on the key performance of dual function material (DFM) used in ICCM process. Via the experimental study on the coal ash impacts, this work explored the adaptability of DFM and ICCM to coal-fired power plant. Na-Ru/Al 2 O 3 DFM and two ashes collected from the electrical precipitators of supercritical coal-fired power plants were used for experiments. It showed that fly ashes contaminated CO 2 adsorbents and active sites of DFMs, and caused successive drops in carbonates conversion and CH 4 selectivity upon cyclic ICCM reactions. The CO 2 -TPD and H 2 -TPSR tests revealed that the declined supply capability of hydrogen atoms by Ru sites, and the increased rate gap between CO formation and the following CO hydrogenation were responsible for the declined methanation ability of ash-contaminated DFMs. The roles of SiO 2 and Fe 2 O 3 phases in ashes were identified, indicating that SiO 2 reacted with adsorbent components and masked Ru sites, and then induced DFM deactivation by affecting the transport processes of key reactants; Fe 2 O 3 successively invaded both Ru sites and Na 2 CO 3 /γ-Al 2 O 3 interface, leading to successive losses in methanation ability and CO 2 desorption capacity with cyclic ICCM reactions.

Dry reforming of methane (DRM) suffers catalysts deactivation due to severe coking. Ni/MgO-Al 2 O 3 is a promising system for DRM catalysts with high coking resistance, as the addition of MgO in Ni/Al 2 O 3 catalysts can improve the alkalinity of the support and enhance the metal-support interaction. However, so far the activity and stability of Ni/MgO-Al 2 O 3 is still unsatisfactory while the role of Mg addition remains unclear. In this paper, a series Ni 0.5 /xMgO-Al 2 O 3 catalysts with flower-like hollow sphere morphology and high surface area were synthesized via a facile hydrothermal method. Appropriate Mg addition promotes the formation of NiAl 2 O 4 while more Mg addition leads to the formation of Ni x Mg y O. Both cases can enhance the MSI of the catalysts without changing the morphology of the catalyst. More Mg addition also leads to stronger CO 2 adsorption via improving the alkalinity. Nevertheless, overdose of Mg results in weaker MSI and the blockage of Ni active sites. Ni 0.5 /0.5MgO-Al 2 O 3 with moderate Mg addition shows excellent activity (CH 4 ∼ 75 %, CO 2 ∼ 85 %) and stability (>100 h) at a high GHSV = 144000 ml/g cat ·h −1 and 800 °C with nearly no coking formation (<0.8 wt%). This work helps reveal the role of MgO addition in Ni/Al 2 O 3 systems and gives new insights into the design of DRM catalysts with high activity and stability.

Al 2 O 3 -supported Ni-Mo as a low-cost and efficient bimetallic catalyst has been applied in the hydrodeoxygenation of plant oils or fats for production of high-quality hydrocarbon fuels, but it is still challenge to avoid the serious cleavage of C-C bonds caused by isolated single-metal Ni sites. Herein, we report a novel Al 2 O 3 -supported Mo-Ni catalyst (Mo-Ni@Al 2 O 3 ) with Ni and Mo sites in close proximity to enhance the hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) selectivity of fatty acid esters. Compared with the conventional Mo-Ni/γ-Al 2 O 3 catalyst showing high hydrogenolysis activity for C−C bonds, the Mo-Ni@Al 2 O 3 catalyst exhibited higher HDO selectivity towards the diesel-range alkanes. Detailed characterizations reveal that during the synthesis of Mo-Ni@Al 2 O 3 catalyst, the loaded Ni species were present in two forms after reduction in a H 2 flow, one is the closely contact of Ni and Mo bimetallic sites and the other is NiAl 2 O 4 , which enhances the synergistic promoting effect between Ni and Mo sites and inhibits the presence of isolated metallic Ni active sites, thereby exhibiting the enhanced remarkably HDO selectivity towards target products.

This study focuses on developing advanced oxygen-containing biofuels with high furan, cyclic ketone, and ethanol content from holocellulose and cellulosic wastes. To achieve this, we employed an integrated process that combined hydropyrolysis and vapor-phase hydrodeoxygenation using Pd/Al 2 O 3 as a catalyst. In the first stage, the non-catalytic hydropyrolysis of hemicellulose resulted in furfural and acetic acid fractions that were effectively converted into furans, cyclic ketones, and ethanol in the second-stage reactor over Pd/Al 2 O 3 under 0.3 MPa H 2 . We found that a hydropyrolysis temperature of 440 °C in the first stage reactor resulted in the highest yield of oxygen-containing biofuels (171.1 mg/g) with 89.2% hemicellulose conversion. However, increasing the hydrodeoxygenation temperature in the second stage reactor reduced the yield of oxygen-containing biofuels, and at 400 °C, excess deoxygenation led to hydrocarbon production. The Pd/Al 2 O 3 catalyst demonstrated high stability during the vapor-phase hydrodeoxygenation of primary furfural and acetic acid intermediates, with only 2.1% coke formation after three reaction cycles. This scalable process enables the conversion of various cellulosic wastes into advanced oxygen-containing biofuels, with considerable total yields. Our findings suggest that this integrated process holds great promise for converting biomass waste into advanced oxygen-containing biofuels.

Excessive phosphorus in water would cause eutrophication and deterioration of the ecological environment. Herein, the La-MOFs/Al 2 O 3 composite was successfully prepared by the in situ hydrothermal synthesis method for granulation, which was conducive to exerting the phosphate adsorption capacity and facilitating practical application. The materials were characterized by SEM, EDX, XRD, BET, FTIR, and Zeta. In addition, the adsorption performance of La-MOFs/Al 2 O 3 was evaluated through adsorption kinetics and isotherms, showing that the Langmuir adsorption capacity was 16.34 mgP·g -1 (25 °C) and increased with the water temperature. Moreover, the batch influence experiments of intimal pH, adsorbent dosage, coexisting ions, and stability tests were performed to analyze the potential for practical applications and verified through the natural micro-polluted water samples from Houxi River and Bailu Lake (China). The results indicated that the La-MOFs/Al 2 O 3 was suited to a wide pH range of 4 to 10 and the phosphate removal efficiency remained above 70% after continuous use for four times, exhibiting excellent stability. It also had excellent selectivity in the presence of SO 4 2- , Cl - , NO 3 - , and HCO 3 - , only decreased to 70.24% at high HCO 3 - ion concentration of 60 mg/L, respectively. And the La-MOFs/Al 2 O 3 had excellent adsorption of total phosphorus, phosphate, and organic phosphorus in the actual river and lake water and completely removed dissolved phosphorus. Finally, a phosphate adsorption mechanism model involved in electrostatic interaction and ligand exchange was proposed. Therefore, La-MOFs/Al 2 O 3 could be considered to be an excellent phosphorus adsorbent for application in the actual water environmental remediation. Graphical abstract

Abstract Magnesium aluminum layered double hydroxide (MgAl–LDH) was first successfully deposited in situ on η -Al 2 O 3 applied to catalyze urea hydrolysis. Characterization by AAS, XRD, SEM, EDS, DSC, FT-IR, N 2 -BET, determination of base strength and basicity and experiments on hydrolysis activities of in situ MgAl–LDH catalysts show that the crystallinity and coverage degree of MgAl–LDH on η -Al 2 O 3 gradually increase with increasing initial c (Mg 2+ ). When initial c (Mg 2+ ) = 2 mol L −1 , η -Al 2 O 3 is completely covered and the smallest particle size, the highest crystallinity, basicity and urea degradation rate of in situ MgAl–LDH are obtained. The basicity is mainly from Mg–OH at the edges of MgAl–LDH on η -Al 2 O 3 . The highest basicity corresponds to the highest urea degradation rate, Mg–OH is the active sites for catalytic hydrolysis of urea. The specific surface area, basicity and catalytic activity of MgAl–LDH by in situ synthesis are evidently higher than MgO and MgAl–LDH purchased. The urea concentration is 8.162 mg L −1 at 165 °C after 120 min with in situ MgAl–LDH ( c (Mg 2+ ) = 2 mol L −1 ) as catalyst, which is below the effluent standard. In situ MgAl–LDH also shows excellent recycling ability and the slight loss of activity should be due to the reduction of basicity, which is caused by hydrothermal conditions. In addition, a possible catalytic mechanism of urea hydrolysis over MgAl–LDH is proposed. Graphical Abstract

Highly stable Ag:AgBr/γ-Al 2 O 3 photo-catalyst was obtained by dispersing AgBr sol on hollow γ-Al 2 O 3 microsphere. Metallic Ag nanoparticles were in situ generated on AgBr crystals by a photo-reduction method. The activity of catalyst was characterized by MO and phenol decomposition. The light irradiation response, the life times of the photo-induced charges, and the charge separation and transition were determined by the UV–vis diffuse reflection spectra, open circuit voltage decay spectra and transient photocurrent responses. The as-prepared Ag:AgBr/γ-Al 2 O 3 catalyst can response to visible light irradiation. Charge separation was clarified to correlate with electrons transferring from Ag to AgBr surface and the consequent reaction with ads-O 2 to generate O 2 − species. It was found that the O 2 − rather than OH played a dominant role in the photocatalytic oxidation of MO and phenol in water. However, the electrons trended to transfer from AgBr to Ag intrinsically without light irradiation. Therefore, the electron transfer between Ag and AgBr reaching the dynamic equilibrium was the key factor for obtaining a high stable Ag/AgBr catalyst which can be obtained by optimizing the Ag:AgBr ratio. Loading amount of Ag:AgBr on γ-Al 2 O 3 was optimized to 30 wt.% and the metallic Ag content was stabilized at 9 wt.% of Ag:AgBr catalyst.

This article proposes a novel organic additive 1-hydroxyethylidene-1,1-diphosphonic acid (HEDP) for the preparation of NiW/Al 2 O 3 efficient hydrodesulfurization (HDS) catalysts. The effects of HEDP on the nature of the tungsten and nickel species supported on the support surface after drying and calcination steps were revealed by employing ultraviolet–visible spectroscopy (UV–Vis), Raman spectroscopy, N 2 adsorption–desorption and H 2 temperature programmed reduction (H 2 -TPR). While the slab morphology and the proportion of NiWS phases were determined by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM). Finally, dibenzothiophene (DBT) was used as a probe to evaluate the effects of HEDP modification on the catalytic performance of the prepared catalyst. The results indicate that the addition of HEDP can facilitate the formation of more polymerized tungsten oxide species and improve the availability of surface nickel atoms. The weakened interaction between active metals and support generate higher stacking numbers and shorter slab lengths among WS 2 crystals on the corresponding catalyst, promote the sulfidation of both Ni and W species and enhance the proportion of NiWS phase. The catalytic evaluation results show that the HEDP-modified catalyst exhibits efficient HDS activity and higher DDS selectivity compared to the phosphoric acid-modified reference catalyst, which is attributed to a large number of accessible NiWS active sites. The present work relates the addition of organic additives with the formation of NiW species and the catalytic activity. The results highlight that the addition of HEDP is an effective strategy to improve the performance of HDS catalysts.

Commercial polymer separators usually have limited porosity, poor electrolyte wettability, and poor thermal and mechanical stability, which can deteriorate the performance of battery, especially at high current densities. In this work, a functional polyethylene (PE) separator is prepared by surface engineering a layer of Ti-doped SiO 2 @Al 2 O 3 particles (denoted as ST@Al 2 O 3 -PE) with strong Lewis acid property and uniform porous structure on one side of the PE separator. On the other hand, ST@Al 2 O 3 particles with abundant pore structures and large cavities can store a large amount of electrolyte, providing a shortened pathway for lithium-ion transport, and the Lewis acid sites and porous structure of the ST@Al 2 O 3 can tune Li plating/stripping behavior and stabilize the lithium metal anode. The ST@Al 2 O 3 -PE separators exhibit better ionic conductivity (5.55 mS cm −1 ) and larger lithium-ion transference number (0.62). At a current density of 1 mA cm −2 , Li/Li symmetric cells with ST@Al 2 O 3 -PE separator can be stably cycled for more than 400 h, and both lithium iron phosphate /Li cells and lithium cobaltate/Li cells with ST@Al 2 O 3 -PE separator have good cycling and rate performance. This work provides a new strategy for developing functional separators and promoting the application of lithium metal batteries.

The electrochemical behavior of Zr(IV) on a molybdenum (Mo) electrode in a KF-AlF 3 -Al 2 O 3 -ZrO 2 molten salt system was studied using cyclic voltammetry (CV), square-wave voltammetry (SWV) and chronopotentiometry (CP). The reduction process of Zr(IV) was found to follow a two-step, two-electron transfer mechanism: Zr(IV)+2e − →Zr(II) and Zr(II)+2e − →Zr(0). The reduction process was quasi-reversible and controlled by diffusion. Al-Zr alloys were successfully obtained on Mo and liquid aluminum electrodes by potentiostatic electrodeposition . Flower-like AlZr 3 and irregular granular Al 3 Zr were obtained on the Mo electrode, which were mainly attributed to the electrochemical co-reduction of Al(III) and Zr(IV) in the molten salt. Three Al-Zr alloy phases, Al 3 Zr , Al 3 Zr 2, and Al 2 Zr, were obtained on the liquid aluminum electrode, among which Al 3 Zr was dominant in the product, followed by Al 3 Zr 2 .
