Instantaneous and Continuous Mild Synthesis of PtPdCo/CeO2 by High-Gravity Technology toward Efficient Hydrogen Evolution Reaction

Run-Dong Cui,Biao Yang,Si-Wen Zhang,Xiao-Fei Zeng,Jie-Xin Wang

Platinum (Pt)-based alloys have become common optimization methods for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) catalysts in recent years by a positive lattice distortion effect and lower noble-metal usage. However, existing synthesis methods are usually complex for achieving alloying. Herein, a high-performance PtPdCo/CeO2 catalyst with an ultrasmall particle size of 2.8 nm is instantaneously and continuously synthesized in an aqueous phase at room temperature by utilizing a high-gravity rotating packed bed reactor. For HER in alkaline medium, the as-prepared catalyst exhibits an overpotential of 18 mV at 10 mA·cm–2 and possesses a mass activity of 2.68 A·mgPt–1, which is 2.0 times and 7.7 times higher than those of the conventional beaker product and commercial Pt/C. In addition, PtPdCo/CeO2 as the ternary alloy catalyst exhibits better HER catalytic performance with the highest mass activity, 5.6 times and 3.2 times higher than PtCo/CeO2 and PtPd/CeO2, respectively. The incorporation of low-content Pd has a significant effect on the structure and electronic state of PtCo, with a great performance improvement. This work provides a convenient and continuous strategy to stably synthesize supported Pt-based catalysts with enhanced catalytic performance.

Engineering the CdS-CeO2 Janus Z-scheme structures for highly efficient photocatalytic pollutant degradation and CO2 reduction

Yujie Ma,Baowei Shen,Yaping Sun,Lingyu Zhang,Yu Xia,Xing Wang,Yong Liu,Jian Zhao,Yuhua Feng

In nanosynthesis, precise structural tailoring is crucial for modulating the properties of hybrid materials. For photocatalysts, structural configuration of the composed materials is a key factor for improving their efficiency. In this study, the CdS-CeO 2 hybrids in core-satellite and core-shell structures were successfully synthesized via accurate kinetic control in a seed-mediated growth process. Due to the Z -scheme charge transfer mechanism, excellent photocatalytic activity was observed in photocatalytic degradation of methylene blue (MB) and CO 2 reduction reactions (CO 2 RR). Notably, the Janus-type core-satellite structure exhibited significantly higher photocatalytic activity than the core-shell structure. Mechanistic analysis revealed that the spatial separation of the CdS and CeO 2 domains in core-satellite structure led to continuous fast separation and transfer of the photogenerated holes and electrons (h + and e − ) to different exposed domains, whereby can be depleted immediately, resembling the electron sink effect. While in core-shell structure, the transfer of the excited carriers to different domain would inevitably cause charge accumulation at the inner core, which obstruct the further charge separation and transfer. Our study provides an effective general way for promoting the charge separation efficiency in hybrid photocatalyst, which is helpful for the rational design and synthesis of advanced photocatalyst.

Electroanalytical comparison of catalyst-support interfaces in In2O3/CeO2 and In2O3/ZrO2 for CO2 reduction to formate

Weijie Zhou,Yuzi Zhang,Chaoyue Li,Xiangyang He,Zhichao Miao,Jinglin Mu,Manfen Liang,Jin Zhou

In 2 O 3 supported on ZrO 2 and CeO 2 was developed for CO 2 -to-formate electroreduction. • Distinct support effects of ZrO 2 and CeO 2 on In 2 O 3 active site were identified. • CeO 2 tunes electronic structure of In species and boosts the catalytic performance. • In 2 O 3 /CeO 2 delivers higher current density and Faradaic efficiency than In 2 O 3 /ZrO 2 . • The In 2 O 3 /CeO 2 catalyst maintains stable operation for 50 h at 100 mA cm −2 . Developing efficient electrocatalysts for the selective CO 2 electroreduction to formate is important for achieving carbon neutrality. Herein, In 2 O 3 /ZrO 2 and In 2 O 3 /CeO 2 catalysts were fabricated by combining MOF-derived oxide supports with incipient wetness impregnation and subsequent thermal treatment. Comparative studies reveal that CeO 2 affords a more favorable catalyst-support interface than the ZrO 2 support, resulting in enhanced activity and selectivity for formate production. In a flow cell, the optimized In 2 O 3 /CeO 2 catalyst achieves a formate Faradaic efficiency of 90.0% at −1.37 V vs. RHE with a current density of 177 mA cm −2 , significantly outperforming the In 2 O 3 /ZrO 2 catalyst. Combined structural characterization and kinetic analysis indicate that the CeO 2 support improves the electronic structure of In species, thereby facilitating the adsorption and conversion of key intermediates and thereby improving the intrinsic reactivity for formate formation. Moreover, the In 2 O 3 /CeO 2 catalyst maintains stable operation for 50 h at 100 mA cm −2 . This work highlights the critical role of support effects in regulating In-based active sites and provides insights into the rational design of efficient catalysts for the selective CO 2 -to-formate electroreduction. A series of In 2 O 3 /ZrO 2 and In 2 O 3 /CeO 2 catalysts were prepared for ECR to formate. The CeO 2 affords a more favorable catalyst-support interface than the ZrO 2 support, resulting in enhanced activity and selectivity for formate production. Engineering the interfacial electron interaction of Co3O4/CeO2 heterostructure for robust CO-SCR in oxygen-rich conditions

Xiaoli Liu,Jianbei Zhang,Yan Cheng,Jiangning Shi,Jianjun Li,Yongjun Liu

Co 3 O 4 /CeO 2 catalyst with rich oxygen vacancies was fabricated. • Co 3 O 4 /CeO 2 catalyst achieves 100% NO x conversion within 225 −400 °C under oxygen-enriched conditions. • The heterostructure interface induces a strong Ce(4 f)–O(2p)–Co(3d) orbital coupling and triggers electron redistribution. • The heterostructure and oxygen vacancies ensured the pathway less affected by O 2 . The development of efficient and low-cost catalysts for the selective catalytic reduction of NO by CO (CO-SCR) under aerobic conditions remains a critical challenge. Heterostructure catalysts, particularly those engineered at the interface between rare earth and transition metal oxides, represent a promising frontier for the CO-SCR reaction. However, a deep understanding of their catalytic mechanism and active sites remains limited. In this work, the Co 3 O 4 /CeO 2 heterostructure catalyst with dispersed Co 3 O 4 nanoparticles on CeO 2 is designed and synthesized via a two-step precipitation method, serving as a model system. The optimized catalyst exhibits superior performance with 100% NO conversion across a wide temperature window (225–400 °C) and robust thermal stability, outperforming pure CeO 2 . Advanced spectral characterization and density functional theory calculations reveal that the heterostructure interface induces a strong Ce(4 f)-O(2p)-Co(3d) orbital coupling, which triggers electron redistribution. This unique interface environment optimizes the adsorption and activation of NO molecules and lowers the N-O bond cleavage energy, thereby enabling the high catalytic performance. This work offers a facile synthesis strategy for designing high-performance heterostructure catalysts and provides fundamental insight into the interface-driven mechanism for CO-SCR applications. A hydrophilic CeO2 coating enabling enhanced structural stability and lithium recovery of the Li1.6Mn1.6O4 lithium ion sieve

Aihong Shi,Zixiang Guo,Jin Long,Yue Liu,Wenge Jiang

Lithium ion sieve Li 1.6 Mn 1.6 O 4 (LMO) is a promising adsorbent for lithium extraction from liquid resources due to its high Li + selectivity and theoretical adsorption capacity. However, its practical application is limited by poor structural stability and the decrease of adsorption capacity resulting from gradual Mn dissolution loss during acidic regeneration process. Herein, a surface modification strategy was proposed to construct a continuous and dense CeO 2 coating on LMO surface, effectively addressing the critical challenge of structural instability and simultaneously improving adsorption performance. This protective layer suppressed Mn leaching, reducing the leaching rate to 3.33% in the first cycle compared with 4.57% for pristine LMO, and further to below 3% after ten consecutive adsorption-desorption cycles, effectively enhancing the structural stability. Furthermore, the excellent hydrophilicity of the CeO 2 coating could enhance the effective contact between the Li + ions in solution and the adsorbent, promoting the migration of Li + and its exchange with protons. As a result, the lithium uptake of optimized CeO 2 -coated LMO composite (CeO 2 @LMO) was 32.55 mg·g −1 much higher than 27.92 mg·g −1 in bare LMO, while retaining 85.50% of its initial capacity after ten cycles. Simulation results further revealed that CeO 2 @LMO exhibited a lower adsorption energy ( E ad ) and a reduced Li + diffusion energy barrier compared with LMO, facilitating Li + migration from the aqueous phase to the solid-liquid interface and accelerating its diffusion within the adsorbent. This work demonstrates that a single surface modification can simultaneously overcome LMO's key limitations, offering a viable strategy for developing durable and efficient lithium recovery systems.

Composition-Tuned Ni–Ce Mixed Oxides with Inverse CeO2/Ni Structure for Enhanced Low-Temperature CO2 Methanation

Yuan Fang,Jundi Liu,Chengxi Zhang,Kande Liu,Ziying Ju,Xuan Meng,Naiwang Liu,Li Shi

This work systematically investigates the effect of Ni/Ce molar ratios (0.3–2.9) on the structure–activity relationship of Ni/Ce mixed oxides for low-temperature CO2 methanation. As the Ni/Ce ratio increased, the rate of CO2 conversion gradually increased. At a GHSV of 12,000 mL·g–1h–1, all catalysts exhibited 100% CH4 selectivity. The best-performing NiCe-2.1 catalyst not only achieved 37.2% CO2 conversion at 200 °C but also maintained above 85% CO2 conversion during the stability test at 250 °C. Characterization (XRD, BET, TEM, H2-TPR/TPD, CO2-TPD, XPS) results revealed that when Ni/Ce <2.1, the catalyst exhibited a conventional Ni/CeO2 structure. The specific surface area gradually decreased with an increasing Ni content. The activity enhancement of Ni/CeO2 structure primarily resulted from the absolute increase in the number of Ni–O–Ce interface sites. When Ni/Ce = 2.1, the catalyst formed an inverse CeO2/Ni structure, which re-exposed the CeO2 surface and significantly restored the specific surface area. TOF analysis confirmed that the interfacial sites in the inverse structure had higher intrinsic activity, thereby further improving the low-temperature activity. When Ni/Ce >2.1, excessive independent NiO phases caused severe nickel agglomeration, inhibiting the formation of additional Ni–O–Ce interfaces. Finally, in situ DRIFTS results revealed that the CO2 methanation on NiCe-2.1 mainly followed the formate pathway (CO2* → HCO3* → HCOO* → CH4).

Cu2O@CeO2 heterostructure nanozyme with synergistic amplification effect-enhanced immunoassay for sensitive detection of Salmonella in food

Ruya Guo,Zhuorui Li,Jingjiang Qiu,Zhongwei Guo,Wuzhen Qi,Li Xue,Xiangyang Gao,Ronghan Wei,Jianhan Lin

Colorimetric immunoassays based on nanozyme labelling offer promising solution to rapid detect pathogenic bacteria for ensuring food safety. However, sluggish electron transfer kinetics and finite active sites of nanozyme result in unsatisfactory catalytic activity, achieving sensitive detection remains a challenge. Here, we report a Cu 2 O@CeO 2 heterostructure nanozyme with synergistic amplification effect integrating rapid charge transfer kinetics and abundant active sites to enhance the colorimetric immunoassay for sensitive detection of pathogenic bacteria. Highly active CeO 2 nanoparticles (NPs) are uniformly and firmly anchored onto stable Cu 2 O nanocubes to form Cu 2 O@CeO 2 core-shell heterostructure, which effectively alleviates the aggregation of NPs and achieves extremely exposure of catalytic active sites. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal that electron transfer at the heterointerface induces a strong built-in electric field, along with abundant density and high affinity for H 2 O 2 , thus enhancing the reaction kinetics and catalytic activity of the nanozyme. Benefiting from these advantages, the Cu 2 O@CeO 2 heterostructure nanozyme exhibits excellent peroxidase-like activity, which could effectively catalyze the substrate 3,3′,5,5′-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) to generate blue oxidized TMB. More importantly, the colorimetric immunoassay utilizing Cu 2 O@CeO 2 nanozyme as labeling probe achieves sensitive detection of Salmonella with a low limit of detection (LOD) of 26 CFU/mL and presents high specificity and stable applicability in spiked food samples. This work provides scientific insights for developing high-activity heterostructure nanozyme and advancing the exploitation of fast bacteria detection technologies to ensure food safety.

Coverage-Dependent Selective Conversion of Methane into Value-Added Ethane over Noble-Metal-Free Ni1-CeO2 Photocatalyst

Lei Luo,Rong Wang,Tieou Wang,Jiangnan Li,Yejun Xiao,Kun Qi,Xiangyang Guo,Zhaochi Feng,Junwang Tang,Fuxiang Zhang

Direct methane conversion to value-added chemicals under mild conditions presents a promising route toward net-zero carbon emissions. However, this process encounters significant challenges in efficiently activating inert C–H bonds and preventing excessive oxidation to CO2. Herein, we propose a coverage-dependent strategy that leverages the correlation between methane coverage and C–C coupling selectivity, thereby enhancing both the activity and selectivity. By tuning the Lewis acidity of a well-defined atomic 3d transition metal-modified ceria, from weak to moderate, it boosts methane adsorption capacity and promotes its dissociative activation. Additionally, incorporating a nickel cocatalyst improves the charge separation through efficient hole extraction. The optimal noble-metal-free catalyst (Ni1-CeO2) delivers exceptional room-temperature performance, achieving a production rate of 243 μmol·g–1·h–1 with approximately 90% ethane selectivity over an ultralong test (>350 h), outperforming previously reported noble-metal-free catalysts. This work provides new insights into selectivity regulation via optimization of chemisorbed methane coverage and paves the way for the design of advanced noble-metal-free catalysts.

AgNPs@CeO2/Nafion Nanocomposite-Modified Electrode for the Sensitive Detection of Trace Lead (II) in Water Samples

Zhengying Guo,Peng Xu,Shiqing Zhou,Ruoxi Wu

Excessive levels of heavy metal pollutants in the environment pose significant threats to human health and ecosystem stability. Consequently, the accurate and rapid detection of heavy metal ions is critically important. A AgNPs@CeO2/Nafion composite was prepared by dispersing nano-ceria (CeO2) in a Nafion solution and incorporating silver nanoparticles (AgNPs). The morphology, microstructure, and electrochemical properties of the modified electrode materials were systematically characterized using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and cyclic voltammetry (CV). By leveraging the oxygen vacancies and high electron transfer efficiency of CeO2, the strong adsorption capacity of Nafion, and the superior conductivity of AgNPs, an AgNPs@CeO2/Nafion/GCE electrochemical sensor was developed. Under optimized conditions, trace Pb2+in water was detected using square wave anodic stripping voltammetry (SWASV). The sensor demonstrated a linear response for Pb2+within the concentration range of 1–100 μg·L−1, with a detection limit of 0.17 μg·L−1(S/N = 3). When applied to real water samples, the method achieved recovery rates between 93.7% and 110.3%, validating its reliability and practical applicability.

The effect and mechanisms of nano cerium dioxide (Nano-CeO2) on cardiovascular development in zebrafish (Danio rerio)

Yiyun Liu,Yan-Ling Liao,Jin-Xia Wang,Bao-Fu Zhang,Qi-Ping Tang,Yuan Ding,Si-Jia Zuo,Qin-Hong Zhou,De-Sheng Pei

The widespread application of nano-cerium dioxide (Nano-CeO 2 ) in agriculture, industry, and other fields has led to an increasing amount of it being released into the environment and becoming a pollutant with potential biological hazards. However, studies on the effects of ceria on cardiovascular development were limited. This study aims to detect the cardiovascular toxicity of Nano-CeO 2 , focusing on its impact on zebrafish hematopoietic function and cardiac development, and to explore its potential molecular mechanisms. We found that exposing zebrafish embryos to different concentrations of Nano-CeO 2 after 6 hpf of fertilization does not hinder the growth and development of zebrafish embryos during their early life stages. However, RNA-Seq analysis indicates that the hematopoietic system of zebrafish is suppressed, the ECM-receptor interaction pathway is disrupted, and the expression of related genes is significantly downregulated. The results of o-dianisidine staining, neutral red staining, and Sudan black staining showed that the hemoglobin, macrophages, and neutrophils of zebrafish were reduced, and the vascular dysplasia of zebrafish was observed. Meanwhile, Reactive oxygen species (ROS) accumulated in the heart of zebrafish larvae treated with Nano-CeO 2 , and heart development-related genes ( nppa , hand2 , nppb , nkx2.5 , and myh7 ) were significantly down-regulated, while gata4 was up-regulated. The addition of the integrin agonist manganese ions restored the expression of genes related to ECM-receptor interaction pathways, alleviating cardiovascular abnormalities caused by Nano-CeO 2 . Besides, significant changes in cardiac histopathology were observed with long-term exposure (120 d post-fertilization), indicating that Nano-CeO 2 exposure affected the development of the cardiovascular system in zebrafish. In summary, acute and chronic exposure to Nano-CeO 2 exhibits cardiovascular toxicity in zebrafish, affecting hematopoietic function and cardiac development, and the mechanism may be related to the ECM-receptor interaction pathway. This study provides useful information for a comprehensive understanding of the toxicity mechanisms and environmental risks of Nano-CeO 2 .

Exploring the Facet-Dependent Structural Evolution of Pt/CeO2 Catalysts Induced by Typical Pretreatments for CO Oxidation

Yao Lv,Aoran Li,Jiajie Ye,Haifeng Wang,Peijun Hu,Kuan-Wen Wang,Yun Guo,Xuan Tang,Sheng Dai

Atomic-scale insights into the interactions between metals and supports play a crucial role in optimizing catalyst design, understanding catalytic mechanisms, and enhancing chemical conversion processes. The effects of oxide support on the dynamic behavior of supported metal species during pretreatments or reactions have been attracting a lot of attention; however, very less systematic integrations are carried out experimentally using real catalysts. In this study, we here utilized facet-controlled CeO2 as examples to explore their influence on the supported Pt species (1.0 wt %) during the reducing and oxidizing pretreatments that are typically applied in heterogeneous catalysts. By employing a combination of microscopy, spectroscopy, and first-principles calculations, it is demonstrated that the exposed crystal facets of CeO2 govern the evolution behavior of supported Pt species under different environmental conditions. This leads to distinct local coordinations and charge states of the Pt species, which directly influence the catalytic reactivity and can be leveraged to control the catalytic performance for CO oxidation reactions.

A Multifunctional MXene@CeO2-Enhanced Hydrogel Dressing for Synergistic Photothermal Antibacterial and Antioxidative Therapy in Wound Healing

Qianyu Guo,Miaomiao Zhang,Jinyao Zheng,Zongjia Li,Yuanhao Zhang,Ying Chen,Yu Chen,Xiue Jiang,Jilin Tang

Chronic wounds infected with drug-resistant bacteria present a formidable clinical challenge, exacerbated by antibiotic overuse that severely compromises healing. Herein, a multifunctional therapeutic hydrogel wound dressing is developed to address these challenges. This advanced nanocomposite hydrogel incorporates cerium dioxide-doped MXene nanosheets (MXene@CeO 2 ) within a glycidyl methacrylate-modified gelatin (GMA-Gelatin) matrix and crosslinked into a hydrogel under UV irradiation (GMAG-GEL), forming a near-infrared (NIR)-responsive material (MXene@CeO 2 /GMAG-GEL). This incorporation enhances the mechanical strength of the hydrogel and creates a protective microenvironment for wound repair. In the acidic environment of bacterial infections, MXene@CeO 2 /GMAG-GEL facilitates the electrostatic capture of bacteria. Synergizing with its photothermal capability, it exhibits exceptional antibacterial activity, effectively killing drug-resistant bacteria and disrupting bacterial biofilms. After eradicating the infection, MXene@CeO 2 /GMAG-GEL further alleviates oxidative stress, promotes cell migration and angiogenesis, and induces macrophage polarization toward an anti-inflammatory phenotype. In vivo studies confirmed MXene@CeO 2 /GMAG-GEL significantly accelerates wound closure and tissue regeneration. This work overcomes the key challenges of antibiotic resistance, persistent inflammation, and impaired tissue regeneration, presents a comprehensive therapeutic strategy for drug-resistant bacterial wound infections through a single multifunctional platform.
