Anti-epilepsy drugs (AEDs), a common therapeutic approach for clinically treating epilepsy, suffer from low permeability toward the blood-brain barrier (BBB), side effect risks, and a failure to regulate the pathological microenvironment. These issues hinder the complete control of epilepsy and lead to a vicious cycle of inflammation-epileptogenesis. Herein, an α-lipoic acid (LA)-based nanozyme that loads phenytoin (PHT) and complexes calcium ions (LA@PHT-Ca 2+ ) is developed. This nanozyme combines the functions of delivering AEDs across the BBB and regulating undesirable microenvironments to treat epilepsy. Amphipathic LA self-assembles into stable nanoparticles in water with BBB crossing ability endowed by the transporting of LA through sodium-dependent multivitamin transporter. LA's enzyme-like and redox functions provide LA@PHT-Ca 2+ with excellent scavenging effects on several free radicals via cascade reactions, thereby protecting neurons from oxidative stress. Moreover, Ca 2+ disrupts neuronal respiration, resulting in reduced production of bioenergetic adenosine triphosphate and an improved hypoxic microenvironment. This leads to decreased expression of P-glycoprotein, a drug-efflux gating protein. This novel lipoic acid-based nanozyme, with intrinsic BBB crossing capability, prolonged intracellular drug retention time, and the ability to block the inflammation-epileptogenesis cycle, presents a satisfactory therapeutic effect in epileptic rats, resulting in attenuated symptoms and an improved microenvironment.

The incidence of acetaminophen-induced liver injury has increased, but effective prevention methods are limited. Although luteolin has hepatoprotective activity, its low solubility and bioavailability limit its applications. Cyclodextrin metal-organic frameworks (CD-MOFs) possess 3D-network structures and large inner cavities, which make them excellent carriers of poorly soluble drugs. In this study, we used CD-MOFs as carriers to improve the dissolution of luteolin and assessed their antioxidant activity, bioavailability, and hepatoprotective effects. Luteolin was loaded into β-CD-MOF, γ-CD-MOF, β-CD, and γ-CD, and characterized by powder X-ray diffractometry (PXRD) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). Our results showed that luteolin-β-CD-MOF was the most stable. The main driving forces were hydrogen bonds and van der Waals forces, as determined by molecular simulation. The loading capacity of luteolin-β-CD-MOF was 14.67 wt%. Compared to raw luteolin, luteolin-β-CD-MOF exhibited a 4.50-fold increase in dissolution and increased antioxidant activity in vitro . Luteolin-β-CD-MOF increased the bioavailability of luteolin by approximately 4.04- and 11.07-fold in healthy rats and liver injured rats induced by acetaminophen in vivo , respectively. As determined by biochemical analysis, luteolin-β-CD-MOF exhibited a better hepatoprotective effect than raw luteolin in rats with acetaminophen-induced liver injury. This study provides a new approach for preventing acetaminophen-mediated liver damage.

The increasing global demand for food and the adverse environmental impacts of excessive agrochemical use highlights the urgent need for sustainable and scalable seed treatment technologies. This paper reports a novel photothermal seed coating (QC@SCCNTs) with high biocompatibility, exceptional photothermal efficiency, and notable reusability, serving as an effective alternative to conventional chemical treatments. The coating consists of sericin-functionalized carboxylated carbon nanotubes (SCCNTs) electrostatically complexed with quaternary ammonium chitosan (QC), forming a composite film (QS film). Under 808 nm near-infrared (NIR) irradiation, QC@SCCNTs demonstrated antimicrobial efficacies exceeding 97 % against six pathogenic microorganisms, including prominent pathogens such as Aspergillus flavus and Fusarium solani. Applied to red kidney bean and pakchoi seeds, the coating effectively eliminated microbial contamination, increasing the germination rate of red kidney beans from 55.56 % to 91.67 %, and promoting seedling height from 14.48 cm to 41.01 cm. The QS film exhibited exceptionally gas barrier properties and mechanical strength, and completely degraded within just three days of soil burial. The coating retained antimicrobial performance over two reuse cycles after removal and washing. These findings demonstrate the potential of QC@SCCNTs as a biodegradable, reuseable, and scalable materials for safe seed protection and storage in sustainable agriculture.

Cold plasma (CP) modification, combined with nanotechnology, has demonstrated significant potential for enhancing the performance of bio-based packaging films. In this study, zein-curcumin-quercetin-chondroitin sulfate nanoparticles (ZCQC NPs) were incorporated into a chitosan film and modified by CP (0, 10, 30, 50 kV) to enhance the physicochemical properties, bioactivity, and preservation ability of the chitosan-based film. Fourier transforms infrared spectrometer (FT-IR) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) analyses confirmed the presence of hydrogen bonding and electrostatic interactions between the NPs and chitosan, as well as their good compatibility. Thermogravimetric analysis revealed that CP treatment synergistically enhanced the thermal stability of NPs-incorporated composite films. The incorporation of CP and NPs enhanced the film's mechanical strength, hydrophobicity, and barrier performance synergistically. Among them, the CP-C-NPs 30 kV film exhibited lower water vapor permeability (1.33 ± 0.15 g/m·d) and oxygen permeability (4.16 ± 0.27 × 10 −6 g/m·d·Pa), along with excellent antioxidant and antibacterial properties. More importantly, the CP-C-NPs 30 kV film significantly reduced the total viable count (13.64 % compared to the control) and the degree of lipid oxidation (TBARS value decreased by 42.86 %) in packaged fish, extending the shelf life at 4 °C to 8 days, which was twice that of ordinary packaging film. This study not only reveals the synergistic enhancement mechanism of CP modification on the performance of active packaging materials but also provides new strategies for developing efficient food preservation materials.

Environmentally persistent free radicals (EPFRs) generated on particles under irradiation in water have attracted particular attention, and their formation mechanisms are not well understood. This study investigated the photoformation of EPFRs on both actual samples collected from an oil production plant in Panjin, Liaoning, China, and simulated Fe(III)-montmorillonite samples in water. The EPFRs detected on actual samples were not easily generated compared with those in the soil or in the air, based on the concentrations of identified PAHs. EPR signals in the range of 1017to 1018spin/g were detected on the simulated Fe(III)-montmorillonite samples. Their g factors were smaller than 2.0030, which indicated the generation of carbon-centered EPFRs. The primary byproducts were identified by chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC-MS), and a possible EPFR formation pathway during PAH degradation was proposed. Hydrogenation of PAHs during the photoformation of EPFRs was observed and might be due to the catalysis of the simulated particles and the interaction of the intermediates. Meanwhile, the effects of the typical anions (NO2−and Cl−) and the surfactant (TWEEN®80 and sodium dodecyl sulfate) were investigated and indicated that the phototransformation process and adsorption process would affect the formation of EPFRs. Overall, our study provided useful information to understand the photoformation of EPFRs in aqueous environments.

Background: The yellow-leafgl1mutant ofLagerstroemia indicaexhibits an altered phenylpropanoid metabolism pathway compared to wild-type (WT). However, details on the metabolites associated with leaf color variation, including color-specific metabolites with bioactive constituents, are not fully understood. Methods: Chemical and metabolomics approaches were used to compare metabolite composition and antioxidant capacity between thegl1mutant and WT leaves. Results: The mutant exhibited an irregular xylem structure with a significantly lower phenolic polymer lignin content and higher soluble phenolic compounds. Untargeted metabolomics analysis identified phenolic compounds, particularly lignans, as key differential metabolites betweengl1and WT, with a significant increase in the mutant. The neolignan derivative balanophonin-4-O-D-glu was identified as a characteristic metabolite in thegl1mutant. The soluble phenolic compounds of thegl1mutant exhibited higher FRAP, ABTS, DPPH, and hydroxyl radical scavenging activity than in WT. Correlation analysis showed a positive relationship between antioxidant capacity and phenolic compounds inL. indica. Conclusions: Metabolites associated with leaf color variation in theL. indicayellow-leafgl1mutant demonstrated high antioxidant capacity, particularly in scavenging hydroxyl radicals.

Sustainable and intelligent packaging systems, utilizing biomass-derived matrix and bioactive indicators represent promising approaches for real-time detection and monitoring of freshness of food, as well as prolonging the shelf-life and improving the quality and safety of food products. Herein, we reported pH-responsive collagen nanocomposite films reinforced by curcumin-loaded Laponite nanoplatelets which could act as smart indicators for monitoring the freshness of shrimps. Caffeic acid, as a bio-based modifier, was covalently grafted onto the surfaces of the nanoplatelets loaded with curcumin . The collagen nanocomposite films were fabricated by the incorporation of functionalized nanoplatelets through all-aqueous casting-evaporation approach. The triple-helical structure of collagen molecules was stabilized by the functionalized nanoplatelets mainly through hydrogen bonding and electrostatic interactions with uniform distribution into the film matrix. Moreover, the resultant nanocomposite films not only demonstrated favorable hydrophobicity and water vapor barrier properties, but also exhibited effective antioxidant activity and anticipated color responsiveness to pH changes and NH 3 presence. The consistent changes in color of the nanocomposite film with the shrimps following days of storage supported its feasibility and potential for monitoring the freshness of shrimps. Therefore, we envision that the developed collagen-based nanocomposite films showcase great potential in the application of sustainable and intelligent packaging system for dynamic visualization of seafood freshness.

Diabetic wound healing is severely affected by the vicious cycle of wound exposure and impaired repair ability. Here, a polyphenol-enhanced wet adhesion hydrogel with the synergistic effect of mechanical activation and reactive oxygen species (ROS) scavenging was developed to promote the healing of infected diabetic wounds. The hydrogel was copolymerized with acrylic acid (AAc), 1-vinylimidazole (VI), and tannic acid (TA) in dimethyl sulfoxide, followed by solvent exchange with water to obtain a strong toughness and wet adhesion hydrogel (PAAcVI-TA hydrogel). The introduction of TA not only enhanced the toughness and wet tissue adhesive strength of the PAAcVI-TA hydrogel but also conferred outstanding ROS scavenging performance, inflammatory inhibition, and vascular growth promotion. More importantly, the PAAcVI-TA hydrogel could transmit mechanical control force to wet skin through robust adhesion and mechanically contract diabetic wounds. After stretching, the tough PAAcVI-TA hydrogel presented excellent resilience, which allowed for long-term contraction of the diabetic wound, reduced bacterial infection, promoted granulation tissue formation and collagen deposition, and accelerated re-epithelialization. As a result, the PAAcVI-TA hydrogel, which combined mechanical activation with ROS scavenging, might provide a new approach to the effective treatment of diabetic wounds and other forms of chronic wounds.

Diabetic oral ulcers pose a significant challenge in healing due to persistent inflammation. Despite local therapeutic interventions remaining the primary mode of treatment, the dynamic nature of the oral cavity, characterized by continuous muscular activity and salivary secretion, poses barriers to sustained drug retention and thereby limits therapeutic efficacy. To address this issue, an approach has been devised that aims to facilitate transdermal delivery of bioactive components to promote the healing of diabetic oral ulcers. A multifunctional soluble microneedle (MN) patch is prepared using γ-polyglutamic acid (γ-PGA), which is loaded with quercetin (Qu)-modified Mg−Zn layered hydroxide salt (LHS) nanosheets (LHSQ) with anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial and pro-angiogenic bioactivities to combat the diabetic oral ulcers. These findings demonstrate that the LHSQ-loaded MN (LHSQ-MN) patches are capable of effectively penetrating the oral mucosa. In a rat model of diabetic oral ulcers, the application of LHSQ-MN patches is found to facilitate the establishment of regeneration sites, regulate the inflammatory microenvironment of damaged tissues, exhibit potent antibacterial effects, expedite the reconstitution of the mucosal epithelium, and accelerate ulcer healing through the promotion of angiogenesis. These outcomes highlight the potential of LHSQ-MN patches as a promising therapeutic strategy for the management of oral ulcers in diabetic patients.

In this study, oregano essential oil (OEO)-loaded soluble soybean polysaccharide (SSPS) -nisin nanoparticles (ONSNPs) were formulated through electrostatic attraction-driven and hydrophobic interactions utilizing SSPS, nisin, and OEO as raw materials. ONSNPs were integrated into polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and soybean protein isolate (SPI) matrices to create composite pads (PS-ONSNPs) by physically cross-linked using a simple freeze-thaw cycling process. The effects of ONSNPs content on the structure and physicochemical properties were evaluated. The results revealed that strong intermolecular interactions between ONSNPs and the PS matrices affected the crystallinity, microstructure, and thermal stability of the pads. Upon incorporating 5 % to 15 % ONSNPs, the structure of composite pads became denser, and the mechanical properties and water resistance were enhanced. Concurrently, the PS-ONSNPs pads facilitated the protection and controlled release of OEO. Furthermore, ONSNPs significantly improved the antioxidant activity of the pads and effectively inhibited the growth of Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli . The prepared PS-ONSNPs 15 % pad was applied to storage experiments of fresh pork, which could extend the shelf life of meat to 10–12 days under 4 °C storage conditions. Therefore, the composite pad devised in this research holds promise as a viable option for intelligent active packaging of fresh meat.

In this study, pectin (PE) composite films containing tea polyphenol (TP) and graphene oxide (GO) were developed. The effects of TP and GO on the appearance, structure, mechanical properties, barrier properties, hydrophobicity, and antioxidant properties of pure PE films were investigated. The results demonstrated that the addition of 1 % w /w TP and 1 % w/w GO increased the tensile strength (TS) and elongation at break (EB) of the composite films to 20.22 MPa and 34.18 %, respectively. Additionally, the water vapor permeability (WVP) was reduced to 0.67 ± 0.17 (×10 −10 g −1 s −1 Pa −1 ), and both the moisture content and water contact angle were significantly decreased. Furthermore, the incorporation of TP enhanced the antioxidant properties of the composite films and demonstrated the slow-release capability of TP. Blueberry fruits packaged in PE-TP-GO film maintained an optimal appearance after eight days of storage at 25 °C, with a reduction in shrinkage index of approximately 29.4 % compared to those packaged in PE film.
