Synergistic enhancement of thermoelectric performance in SnTe via in-situ nanocompositing and band structure engineering

Yu Fang,Zheng Tang Cai,Ze Wei Zhu,Jia Hao Ma,Hong Kai Cai,Han Li

SnTe has attracted significant attention as a promising thermoelectric material due to its favorable band structure and low cost. However, its high intrinsic hole concentration and thermal conductivity still hinder further performance enhancement. In this study, a series of Sn 2.9-x W x Te 2.9 –(In 2 Te 3 ) 0.03 –(Cu 2 Te) 0.18 (x = 0, 0.03, 0.06, 0.09, 0.12, 0.15) composites were synthesized by incorporating in-situ formed In 2 Te 3 and Cu 2 Te nanophases along with W doping. Structural and microstructural analyses confirmed the formation of uniformly distributed nanoinclusions (10–20 nm) and homogeneous elemental distribution. W doping effectively suppressed intrinsic Sn vacancies and induced valence band convergence, while the introduction of In created resonant states. These synergistic effects significantly enhanced the Seebeck coefficient. Moreover, multiscale phonon scattering arising from nanophases, dislocations, and lattice distortions greatly reduced the lattice thermal conductivity. The sample with x = 0.09 exhibited a maximum power factor of 25.98 μW·cm −1 ·K −2 , while the sample with x = 0.12 achieved a minimum lattice thermal conductivity of 0.406 W·m −1 ·K −1 . As a result, the optimized composition reached a peak ZT of 1.23 and an average ZT of 0.44 at 823 K, representing improvements of approximately 209 % and 215 % over pristine SnTe, respectively. These results place the material among the top-performing SnTe-based thermoelectric systems reported to date.

Nickel nanoparticles embedded in N-doped carbon efficient selective hydrogenation of cinnamaldehyde in aqueous phase

Xingguo Yang,Xinhuan Lu,Qinjun Zhang,Hao Liu,Haotian Guo,Lin Zhao,Dan Zhou,Qinghua Xia

The selective hydrogenation of cinnamaldehyde (CAL) to cinnamyl alcohol (COL) is challenging because the hydrogenation of C = C bonds is thermodynamically favored over that of the C = O group. In this work, Ni 3 /Fe@CN-x materials prepared by loading metal Ni onto carbon materials derived from Fe-ZIF were successfully used to selectively hydrogenate the C = O bond of cinnamaldehyde, while single metal Ni@CN-x materials derived from Ni-ZIF materials were successfully used to selectively hydrogenate the C = C bond in the side chain of CAL. Both catalysts shows admirable catalytic activity in the selective hydrogenation reaction of CAL. The reaction results show that the introduction of Ni species into Fe@CN-350 material significantly improved the conversion of CAL and the selectivity of COL, which is attributed to the synergistic effect of bimetallic Ni and Fe, and the excellent hydrogenation activity of metallic Ni. The Ni 3 /Fe@CN-350 catalytic system can achieved 94.3 % CAL conversion and 86.3 % COL selectivity, and the catalyst could be stably recycled 5 times. Under mild conditions (90 °C, 4 h), the single metal Ni@CN-600 catalytic system achieved 100 % CAL conversion and >99 % hydrocinnamaldehyde (HCAL) selectivity, and the catalyst could be stably recycled 10 times.

Photothermal-pancaking synergy in interfacial absorption enables rapid purification of viscous oil-in-water emulsions

Ruoxuan Li,Chaofan Zhu,Ching-Wen Lou,Kaifang Xie,Jia-Horng Lin,Guangting Han,Que Chen,Ting Dong

Recovery of water resources from oily wastewater is essential, but the purification of current separation materials to high-viscosity oil-containing emulsions (e.g., those with viscosity over hundreds of mPa·s) constitutes a particularly formidable challenge. This limitation encompasses three critical challenges: (i) oil droplets stabilized as surfactant-encapsulated microspheres, (ii) severe interfacial fouling, and (iii) irreversible efficiency degradation due to oil's conglutination and accumulation. Herein, we demonstrated photothermal-pancaking synergy in interfacial absorption as an efficient separation strategy for challenging high-viscosity oil-water emulsions where conventional methods fail. Emulsified oils were harvested by polypyrrole-wrapped biomass superhydrophobic aerogel (M-PPy@KF/SA) through an in-situ oscillation process, whereby oil droplets evolved into pancake shapes, triggering a sequential capillary absorption from water with separation efficiency of over 98.3 %. The purification dynamics were found to be primarily governed by oil viscosity, light intensity, and oscillation speed. Surfactant-coated more viscous oil droplet reflected sluggish oil diffusion kinetics. Consequently, purifying viscous emulsions (0.3–400.0 mPa·s) required repeated striking-pancaking-absorption with demulsification time increasing by 7.7–80.0 %. Notably, photothermal stimulation led to a significant acceleration of oil-diffusion kinetics by 105.9–183.5 % (e.g., motor oil #3 , ~ 400.0 mPa·s). This effect suppressed repeated emulsified oil absorption-detachment behavior at the interface, which reduced the purification time of viscous motor oil #3 -in-water emulsion by up to 80.0 % compared to non-irradiated controls. Additionally, increasing oscillation speed (100–300 rpm) boosted initial kinetic energy, leading to a 55–90 % reduction in purification time. This acceleration was primarily driven by enhanced interfacial dynamics at higher oscillation frequencies.

Dual Roles of Gram-Positive Bacteria in Biofilm Structure and Functionality in Microbial Electrochemical Systems

Jingjing Zhang,Thangavel Sangeetha,Xiangyu Han,Weimon Yan,Baohong Han,Xu Zhang,Ning Mei,Xinyu Wan,Weiwei Cai,Hong Yao

Gram-positive bacteria are essential for the structural stability and functionality of biofilms in microbial electrochemical systems (MESs). This study evaluated the effects of lysozyme-induced disruption of Gram-positive bacteria on the microbial electrolysis cell (MEC) performance and biofilm composition. Lysozyme treatment reduced biofilm thickness by 37.7% and biomass by 80% due to the peptidoglycan hydrolysis and increased cell lysis, leading to higher proportions of dead cells in both the anode (18.02 to 57.7%) and the cathode (21.9 to 55.2%) biofilms. However, the metabolic capacity of anodic microorganisms (59 to 360 Coulomb produced by 1010 microorganisms) was enhanced due to enhanced cell permeability and a looser biofilm structure that facilitated electron transfer. Conversely, the cathodic performance of the electron recovery efficiency decreased (from 81.97 to 70.92%), and the H2 and CH4 productions were reduced by 43 and 11%, respectively. This was attributed to the loss of key Gram-positive species and weakened microbial network connectivity. Network analysis revealed enhanced modularity at the anode with stabilized performance, whereas the cathode network was sparse and had impaired microbial interactions. These findings have accentuated the dual roles of Gram-positive bacteria in maintaining biofilm stability and microbial interactions, influencing discrete anode and cathode processes.

Illuminating NAD+ Metabolism in Live Cells and In Vivo Using a Genetically Encoded Fluorescent Sensor

Yejun Zou,Aoxue Wang,Li Huang,Xudong Zhu,Qingxun Hu,Yinan Zhang,Xianjun Chen,Fengwen Li,Qiaohui Wang,Hu Wang,Renmei Liu,Fangting Zuo,Ting Li,Jing Yao,Yajie Qian,Mei Shi,Xiao Yue,Weicai Chen,Zhuo Zhang,Congrong Wang,Yong Zhou,Linyong Zhu,Zhenyu Ju,Joseph Loscalzo,Yi Yang,Yuzheng Zhao

Summary Understanding of NAD + metabolism provides many critical insights into health and diseases, yet highly sensitive and specific detection of NAD + metabolism in live cells and in vivo remains difficult. Here, we present ratiometric, highly responsive genetically encoded fluorescent indicators, FiNad, for monitoring NAD + dynamics in living cells and animals. FiNad sensors cover physiologically relevant NAD + concentrations and sensitively respond to increases and decreases in NAD + . Utilizing FiNad, we performed a head-to-head comparison study of common NAD + precursors in various organisms and mapped their biochemical roles in enhancing NAD + levels. Moreover, we showed that increased NAD + synthesis controls morphofunctional changes of activated macrophages, and directly imaged NAD + declines during aging in situ . The broad utility of the FiNad sensors will expand our mechanistic understanding of numerous NAD + -associated physiological and pathological processes and facilitate screening for drug or gene candidates that affect uptake, efflux, and metabolism of this important cofactor.

Effects of exopolysaccharide from Lactobacillus rhamnosus on human gut microbiota in in vitro fermentation model

Yuzhu Zhu,Jia-Min Zhou,Wei Liu,Xionge Pi,Qingqing Zhou,Ping Li,Tao Zhou,Qing Gu

Exopolysaccharides (EPS) produced by some bacteria have prebiotic potential and contribute to the regulation of the gut microbiota. Four types of EPS with different molecular composition from Lactobacillus rhamnosus ZFM231 were identified. In this work, we evaluated the potential of EPS on human gut microbiota by in vitro fermentation model. It was found that purified EPS fractions were degraded effectively by human gut microbiota. Gas chromatography (GC) assay revealed that EPS could be fermented to produce short chain fatty acids (SCFAs) by gut microbiota in human fecal samples from twelve healthy volunteers. 16S rDNA sequencing showed that EPS mainly increased the abundance of Ruminococcus , Dorea , Butyricicoccus , Blautia and others. The current research provides valuable new information on the mechanisms of absorption, utilization and functional activity of Lactobacillus rhamnosus EPS in the gastrointestinal tract of the human body.

Yang Chenxuan,Wang Heda,Liu Minghang,Cai Yuang,Chi Jimei,Huang Liang,Su Meng,Wu Dongdong,Xu Bainan

Objective This study aimed to construct a perovskite quantum dot probe targeting isocitrate dehydrogenase 1 (IDH1) mutation. The probe is intended to enable rapid in vitro pathological diagnosis of IDH1-mutant glioma, guide surgeons in formulating scientific and rational resection strategies during surgery, and facilitate precise individualized intraoperative treatment for glioma patients. Methods Via surface ligand engineering, a perovskite nanocrystal (PNC) probe modified with bromobutyric acid (BBA) was developed in this study. This probe enhances water/oxygen stability and addresses the limitation that restricts the application of perovskite quantum dots as fluorescent probes. The probe was used to stain intraoperative tumor frozen sections to verify its specific recognition capability for IDH1-mutant glioma. Results Verification using 50 glioma frozen sections demonstrated that the probe could accomplish rapid pathological detection within 30 min (with a 5-minute incubation period). Fluorescence imaging showed specific green fluorescence in IDH1-mutant glioma. When compared with genetic testing results, the probe exhibited the following detection performance: sensitivity of 100%, specificity of 84%, positive predictive value of 86.2%, negative predictive value of 100%, and accuracy of 92% (κ = 0.84, P  < 0.001). Conclusions This BBA-stabilized perovskite probe enables rapid and specific in vitro detection of IDH1-mutant glioma. It provides real-time guidance for glioma surgery, is expected to assist surgeons in achieving precise resection of glioma, and thus advances the development of precision neuro-oncology.

In situ cryomilling-engineered silicon nitride coating for ultradurable silicon anodes in lithium-ion batteries

Hantao Li,Xuefei Wang,Guoqiang Luo,Chen Chen,Ming Gao,Qiang Shen

Silicon anodes offer very high theoretical capacity, but their low ionic conductivity and the development of an unstable solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) lead to fast capacity loss and restricted rate performance. In this work, we present a novel surface engineering approach using liquid nitrogen-assisted cryomilling to form an ultrathin silicon nitride (Si N) layer in situ on nano‑silicon particles. The resulting Si@Si-N composite has a dual-phase coating composed of electrochemically inert Si 3 N 4 and active, non-stoichiometric SiN x . These phases synergistically stabilize the electrode/electrolyte interface and enhance Li-ion transport. TEM, XPS, and EDS analysis confirm the formation of a uniform amorphous Si N layer. Electrochemical tests show outstanding performance: after 500 cycles at 1 A g −1 , the Si@Si-N anode delivers a high reversible capacity of 1152 mAh g −1 , with an initial coulombic efficiency of 82.8 %. In rate capability tests, it delivers 759 mAh g −1 at 5 A g −1 and recovers 98.49 % of its capacity when the current returns to 0.2 A g −1 . GITT and EIS analyses reveal significantly improved Li + diffusion kinetics, which can be attributed to the formation of a highly conductive Li 3 N-rich interphase during lithiation, along with the mechanically robust Si 3 N 4 framework that collectively mitigate SEI degradation. This work provides a scalable, cost-effective strategy for stabilizing silicon anodes, representing a significant advancement toward their commercial use in high-energy-density lithium-ion batteries.

High-Fat Diet Promotes Glycolysis in Hepatocellular Carcinoma by Suppressing Hepatic Kisspeptin Signaling in Mice

Rongqian Zhao,Li Nie,Yu Shi,Lei Jin,Yiran Pan,Xinxin Zhang,Zun Wang,Man He,Gao Zhang,Qingru Yuan,Tian Xia,Shuqing Wang,Jie Yang,Wenxing Yang,Dongzhi Yuan

Hepatocellular carcinoma is a leading cause of cancer-related mortality worldwide, with metabolic syndrome emerging as a major risk factor. However, the molecular mechanisms underlying the association between metabolic syndrome and hepatocellular carcinoma progression are not fully understood. Here, we investigated the role of kisspeptin signaling in hepatocellular carcinoma progression under metabolic dysregulation. High-fat diet feeding significantly decreased hepatic kisspeptin receptor expression in mice. Integrated transcriptomic and metabolomic analyses revealed that kisspeptin primarily regulated glycolysis-related pathways. In a N -Nitrosodiethylamine-induced hepatocellular carcinoma mouse model, high-fat diet accelerated tumor progression accompanied by kisspeptin receptor downregulation. Treatment with kisspeptin-10 attenuated high-fat diet-promoted hepatocellular carcinoma progression and decreased the expression of key glycolytic enzymes HK, PFKM, and PKM2. In vitro studies using HepG2 cells further confirmed that kisspeptin-10 inhibited these glycolytic enzymes in a dose-dependent manner. The integration of transcriptomic and metabolomic data demonstrated that kisspeptin exerts broad inhibitory effects on metabolism, particularly glucose metabolism, also suggesting potential antitumor effect. Our results suggest kisspeptin as a potential therapeutic target for hepatocellular carcinoma in patients with metabolic syndrome.

Kindlin-2 in Sertoli cells is essential for testis development and male fertility in mice

Chi Xiaochun,Luo Weiwei,Song Jiagui,Li Bing,Su Tiantian,Yu Miao,Wang Tianzhuo,Wang Zhenbin,Liu Cheng,Li Zhen,He Huiying,Zhan Jun,Zhang Hongquan

Kindlin-2 is known to play important roles in the development of mesoderm-derived tissues including myocardium, smooth muscle, cartilage and blood vessels. However, nothing is known for the role of Kindlin-2 in mesoderm-derived reproductive organs. Here, we report that loss of Kindlin-2 in Sertoli cells caused severe testis hypoplasia, abnormal germ cell development and complete infertility in male mice. Functionally, loss of Kindlin-2 inhibits proliferation, increases apoptosis, impairs phagocytosis in Sertoli cells and destroyed the integration of blood-testis barrier structure in testes. Mechanistically, Kindlin-2 interacts with LATS1 and YAP, the key components of Hippo pathway. Kindlin-2 impedes LATS1 interaction with YAP, and depletion of Kindlin-2 enhances LATS1 interaction with YAP, increases YAP phosphorylation and decreases its nuclear translocation. For clinical relevance, lower Kindlin-2 expression and decreased nucleus localization of YAP was found in SCOS patients. Collectively, we demonstrated that Kindlin-2 in Sertoli cells is essential for sperm development and male reproduction.

QBIC-Terahertz Metasurface for Quantitative Detection of Chlorpyrifos in Soybean Oil in a Liquid State

Fang Wang,Gan Liu,Binggang Xiao,Jianyuan Qin

Resonances originating from the concept of bound states in the continuum (BIC) have been shown to produce high quality factors and strong field enhancements. Here, an ultrasensitive terahertz (THz) metallic metasurface based on BIC is developed to address the limited sensitivity of THz sensing technology. The metasurface employs a u-shaped resonator and an l-shaped resonator as the unit cell, and a resonance around 0.7 THz can be excited. The analysis of the quality factor and the band structure confirms that this resonance is induced by the BIC mode. Based on the calculations, it can be concluded that the frequency shift changes linearly as a function of analyte thickness within the range of 0–10 μm, and the sensitivity can be as high as 151 GHz/RIU. The feasibility of the detection of chlorpyrifos concentration in soybean oil is assessed experimentally, and a liquid cell is applied as a sample holder to maintain the sample in a liquid state. It can be concluded that the metasurface enables effective detection of chlorpyrifos in soybean oil, with a limit of detection (LOD) as low as 0.007 mg/L. Our work enables the detection of trace chlorpyrifos in soybean oil, facilitating the application of THz technology in food safety.

An amphiphilic aggregate-induced emission polyurethane probe for in situ actin observation in living cells

Yuqing Niu,Bokai Zhang,Massimiliano Galluzzi

The specific binding of fluorescent probes or biomolecules to the actin cytoskeleton network is increasingly important for monitoring various complex cellular activities such as cell adhesion, proliferation, locomotion, endocytosis, and cell division. However, improving cell uptake and subcellular resolution is still the main obstacle for successful and wide application of cellular fluorescent probes. Here, we designed and synthesized an amphiphilic block polyurethane with peculiar photophysical properties of aggregation induced emission (AIE), which can be used in living cell imaging to promote selective visualization of cell structures. The AIE effect polyurethane (abbreviated as AIE-PU) was prepared by two-step polymerization of diisocyanate terminated polyethylene glycol and polycaprolactone with hydroxyl terminated AIE dye. A series of characterization techniques proved the successful synthesis of AIE-PU. Due to the amphiphilic chain segment of its linear block molecule, AIE-PU block copolymers can self-assemble into spherical nanoparticles in aqueous solution, showing relatively stable photophysical properties and good water dispersion. Cellular experiments demonstrated that AIE-PUs have low toxicity and high actin network affinity. Moreover, the uptake mechanism was studied by low temperature and metabolic inhibition experiments, showing that AIE-PU nanoparticles could be easily internalized into different living cells through energy-dependent endocytosis, and can be transported from the cellular periphery to the actin network via clathrin- and caveolae-dependent transport pathway. Upon binding with the actin network, the inter-chain AIE mechanism of the probe was significantly enhanced, which is pivotal for the long-term stable fluorescence imaging of actin microfilament network in living cells. Finally, compared with commercial actin dyes, this probe showed higher photostability, even after a longer retention time, without significant fluorescence quenching.
