Multiscale structured MOF-808@PVDF/DA fiber membranes with high filtration efficiency and long-term loading capacity for air-filtration applications

Xinyu Ren,Weili Shao,Kaiyang Cao,Ningbo Zhao,Jingyu Ma,Weichang Xiao,Ying Cao,Fan Liu

Existing air filtration materials suffer from short service life, limited load capacity, and lack of multifunctional properties such as chemical degradation resistance. To address these limitations, this study combined electrostatic-assisted solution blow spinning (E-SBS) with in situ growth of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) to produce a scalable MOF-808@polyvinylidene fluoride/dopamine 2 (MOF-808@PVDF/DA2) micro/nanofiber composite membrane. The multiscale PVDF/DA micro-nanofiber composite membrane produced via electrostatic-assisted solution blow spinning exhibits small pore size (0.67 μm) and high porosity (92.23 %). Following dopamine (DA) modification and MOF-808 loading, the membrane exhibits outstanding filtration performance (filtration efficiency: 99.98 %, quality factor Q f : 0.129 Pa −1 ), long-term dust-holding capacity (dust-holding capacity up to 22.9 g m −2 ), and excellent catalytic degradation performance (98.7 % degradation rate within 30 min). Notably, the MOF-808@PVDF/DA2 membrane exhibits high air permeability (158 mm s −1 ), effectively reducing energy consumption during filtration. After multiple cycles of use, filtration efficiency remains as high as 98 %, demonstrating a long service life. This study proposes an innovative strategy for designing next-generation protective materials that integrate filtration and catalytic detoxification functions.

Piezoelectric photocatalytic PVDF-g-IL nanocomposite membranes incorporated with ZnO@PDA-Ag nanoparticles for high-efficiency dye wastewater separation and purification

Liu Hongxu,Xie Junhao,Sun Shulin

In recent years, piezoelectric–photocatalytic materials have attracted significant attention due to their potential to address environmental pollution issues in a straightforward, effective and sustainable manner. In this paper, Ag nanoparticles are successfully immobilized on the surface of ZnO, and a multifunctional PVDF-based water treatment membrane with piezoelectric–photocatalytic performance is constructed for the first time by combining the prepared ZnO@PDA-Ag composite nano-photocatalysts with the PVDF-g-IL piezoelectric matrix. The distinctive structure of ZnO@PDA-Ag enhances charge separation in the photocatalytic process, effectively promoting the photocatalytic activity of ZnO. The grafting IL onto PVDF chain segments induces a transformation of the polar crystalline phases within the PVDF. The synergistic effect of both results in significant improvements to the membrane’s porosity, increasing the permeate flux. The PVDF-g-IL/ZnO@PDA-Ag membrane demonstrates a high degree of efficiency in the removal of various dyes with an approximate removal efficiency of 100%. Furthermore, the PVDF-g-IL/ZnO@PDA-Ag membrane displays piezoelectric polarization, resulting in the formation of a built-in electric field when exposed to ultrasound, which enhances electron–hole separation and transfer efficiency. The membrane is capable of degrading approximately 98% of the dye within a 90-min degradation experiment. Finally, the PVDF-g-IL/ZnO@PDA-Ag membrane exhibits excellent mechanical stability even after multiple self-cleaning and recycling cycles.

Electrospun nanofiber surface-modified polyethylene separator for enhanced cycling stability and low-temperature performance of sodium-ion batteries

Bin Li,Yan Liu,Xiaohui Han,Yihao Zhou,Feng Xiao,Wenqi Xian,Yuehuan Chu,Guocong Liu,Zhouguang Lu

Sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) are emerging as promising low-cost and long-cycle energy storage systems. However, the poor wettability of the conventional polyolefin separators with polar electrolytes leads to low ionic conductivity and high battery resistance, causing rapid capacity decay. Herein, we propose using a polyethylene (PE) separator coated with a nanofiber composited of poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) and Al 2 O 3 filler via electrospinning. Compared to the standard PE separators, this composite separator offers much improved electrolyte wettability, mechanical strength, and electrochemical stability. Electrochemical tests demonstrate that the Na[Ni 1/3 Fe 1/3 Mn 1/3 ]O 2 ||hard carbon pouch cells based on the PVDF-Al 2 O 3 /PE composite separator exhibit a capacity retention of 95.1% after 800 cycles at 1C. Additionally, the separator significantly enhances low-temperature discharge performance and cycling stability. Characterizations based on Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and X-ray diffraction confirm the successful integration of Al 2 O 3 nanoparticles into the PVDF matrix, resulting in a homogeneously dispersed and well-connected structure, which improves ion transport efficiency and stability, thereby effectively boosting battery performance. This research highlights the potential of PVDF-Al 2 O 3 nanofiber composite separators for advanced SIBs with high reversibility, a wide operating temperature range, and long cycling life.

Co-modulated interface binding energy and electric field distribution of layer-structured PVDF-LDPE dielectric composites with BaTiO3: experiment and multiscale simulations

Bo Ruitian,Wang Chunfeng,Wang Yongliang,He Peigang,Han Zhidong

The layer-structured composites were built by the dielectric and insulating layers composed of polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) and low-density polyethylene (LDPE) composites containing barium titanate (BT) to modulate the dielectric and energy storage properties of the composites. The simulations on the interface models for molecular dynamics and the geometric models for finite element analysis were performed together with the experimental characterization of the morphology, dielectric, and energy storage properties of the composites. The results revealed that polyethylene as an insulating layer played a successful role in modulating dielectric permittivity and breakdown strength while BT particles exerted positive effects in improving the miscibility between the composed layers and redistributing the electric field. The strong interface binding energy and the similar dielectric permittivity between the PVDF layer and the BT20/LDPE layer made for the layer-structured composites with a characteristic breakdown strength ( E b ) of 188.9 kV·mm −1 , a discharge energy density ( U d ) of 1.42 J·cm −3 , and a dielectric loss factor (tan δ ) of 0.017, which were increased by 94%, 141%, and decreased by 54% in comparison with those of the BT20/PVDF composite, respectively.

A carbonaceous-material/PVDF-modified all-solid-state microneedle potentiometric array for multiplexed in vivo ion-selective monitoring in salt-stressed wheat

Zhuo Wang,Chang Chen,Liu-Deng Zhang,Zhi-Hao Wang,Yu-Bin Lin,Li-Feng Fan,Zhong-Yi Wang,Xiao-Dong Wang,Bin Luo,Ai-Xue Li,Lan Huang

A 4-channel solid-state microneedle array was developed for synchronized multi-ion sensing. • Carbonaceous-material/PVDF improved interfacial potential stability. • PU/PEG coating enhanced membrane adhesion and mechanical robustness. • The array enabled in vivo, simultaneous tracking of multi-ion dynamics under salt stress. Understanding ion regulation during plant salt stress requires real-time in vivo monitoring of coordinated multi-ion dynamics. However, the intrinsic complexity of living plant tissues poses substantial challenges to reliable multiplexed ion sensing. To address these challenges, a four-channel all-solid-state microneedle platform was developed for simultaneous in vivo monitoring of Na + -, K + -, H + -, and Ca 2+ -selective potentiometric responses in wheat seedling stems. The platform employs a graphene/PPy/Fe(CN)₆ solid contact for ion-to-electron transduction, a carbonaceous-material/PVDF composite dispersed within the ion-selective membranes, and an outer polyurethane/polyethylene glycol protective coating. Before PU/PEG deposition, the optimized Na + -, K + -, and Ca 2+ -selective electrodes showed linear activity-based calibration responses over the nominal concentration range of 10 −5 –10 −1  M, with mean activity-based detection limits of pNaLOD = 5.6, pKLOD = 5.4, and pCaLOD = 5.5, respectively; the H + -selective electrode showed a linear response over pH 2–11, with a mean pHLOD of 11.1. Under continuous immersion in MS medium, the PU/PEG-protected electrodes maintained the predefined near-Nernstian calibration-slope thresholds for approximately 10–15 days, depending on the ion channel, whereas the corresponding unprotected electrodes reached these thresholds earlier. Spike-recovery tests of the Na + -, K + -, and Ca 2+ -selective electrodes in wheat stem extracts yielded recoveries of 86.0–128.3%, while multi-ion perturbation experiments showed limited cross-channel signal coupling under the tested conditions. The platform was further applied to two wheat cultivars for real-time monitoring of relative Na + -, K + -, H + -, and Ca 2+ -selective EMF dynamics in seedling stems under salt stress. The two cultivars exhibited distinct late-stage ion-selective ΔEMF patterns across all four channels, with DK961 showing larger Na + - and Ca 2+ -selective ΔEMF responses, a more negative K + -selective ΔEMF response, and a smaller H + -selective ΔEMF response than Landon. Together, these results support the analytical and operational feasibility of the microneedle array for multiplexed in vivo monitoring of relative ion-selective EMF dynamics in salt-stressed wheat stems. Constructing spider-web-like PVDF fiber film via electrospinning and resin pre-coating for enhancing interfacial bonding between titanium alloy and CFRP

Jinheng Zhang,Xueling Liang,Ning Yang,Shuying Shi,Wenjing Xu,Kecheng Zhou,Jing Song,Boris Fedulov,Alexey Fedorenko,Hao Liu,Fei Cheng

Reliable bonding between titanium alloy (Ti) and carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) is crucial in applications such as aero-engine blades. However, the smooth native oxide film on the Ti substrate surface and the inherent brittleness of the epoxy adhesive layer can readily lead to interfacial debonding failure. This study proposed an integrated surface treatment process combining laser engraving, electrospinning, and resin pre-coating (RPC). Laser engraving was employed to generate regular protrusions and micro-channels on Ti substrate surface, thereby providing mechanical anchoring sites and quasi-vertical infiltration spaces for epoxy resin. Electrospinning was then utilized to deposit a polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) fiber web with a controllable areal density (0.2–1.0 g/m 2 ) onto the engraved surface, forming a three-dimensional porous network. Subsequently, the RPC treatment reduced the micro-void defects caused by the intrinsic hydrophobicity of PVDF, ensuring improved resin infiltration and establishing quasi-Z-directional fiber bridging. This approach was designed to construct a spider-web-like PVDF fiber film reinforcement structure at the bonding interface. Surface analysis demonstrated that the combined treatment effectively modulated the surface morphology, roughness, and wettability. Single lap shear tests revealed that the PVDF 0.4 -Ti/CFRP composite (laser engraving + 0.4 g/m 2 PVDF fiber web + RPC) achieved a shear strength of 26.8 MPa, representing a 137.2% increase over the untreated control. Failure mode analysis further revealed that the failure mechanism transitioned from interfacial debonding to CFRP interlaminar tearing, confirming the effectiveness of the PVDF fiber web as an interfacial reinforcement and providing a new pathway for high-performance Ti/CFRP joining.

Dual-salt coupled fluoroethylene carbonate synergistically regulated PVDF-HFP/phosphated Li6.4La3Zr1.4Ta0.6O12 composite polymer electrolytes enable Li metal batteries with stable dual interface

Yiping Gu,Qi Wei,Yun Hong,Ze Ma,Zihua Wang,Tao Zhang,Xiaoyu She,Wei Lu

Composite polymer electrolytes (CPEs) based on poly(vinylidene fluoride-co-hexafluoropropylene) (PVDF-HFP)/Li 6.4 La 3 Zr 1.4 Ta 0.6 O 12 (LLZTO) are regarded as promising electrolyte systems for developing high-energy-density solid-state lithium batteries. However, the combination of ceramic fillers and the polymer matrix often leads to poor lithium metal interface stability and limited ion transport. Here, we constructed phosphated LLZTO/PVDF-HFP CPEs synergistically regulated by a dual-salt (LiTFSI-LiBOB) and fluoroethylene carbonate (FEC). Surface phosphation of LLZTO reduces interfacial side reactions, LiBOB alleviates interfacial corrosion at the cathode/Al current collector, while FEC and dual-salt synergistically facilitate the formation of a robust SEI layer and suppress SN-induced nitrile polymerization side reactions. The electrolyte exhibits a wide electrochemical window (5.0 V), a low activation energy (0.285 eV), and an excellent Li + transference number (0.62). Besides, the assembled Li|PHL-DLi-FEC|Li cell exhibits the lifespan of over 1000 h at 0.2 mA cm −2 at both 25 °C and 60 °C. The assembled LiFePO 4 (LFP) |PHL-DLi-FEC|Li cell displays an initial capacity of 144.6 mAh g −1 , 91.9% capacity retention after 500 cycles under 0.5 C, and approaching 100% coulombic efficiency after 500 cycles at 1 C. This work offers new insights into composite polymer electrolytes with stable dual interfaces for solid-state batteries.

Photocatalyst degradation of binary pesticide/antibiotic mixtures by biochar/g-C3N4 for highly efficient water purification: Effects, mechanism and PVDF membrane application

Haojie Shi,Wei Wang,Haoyu Shi,Peike Cao,Deming Xia,Wanting Chen,Zhentao Zhou,Tetiana Dontsova,Liangang Mao,Lan Zhang,Lizhen Zhu,Chi Wu,Xingang Liu

A positive correlation between the degradation rates of pollutants and LUMO–HOMO gaps was revealed. • AZO degradation was conversely facilitated by coexisting pollutants with narrower LUMO–HOMO gaps. • Nearly all the degradation intermediates of AZO had lower toxicity than the parent compound did. • The BCN–PVDF membrane achieves excellent removal and self-cleaning performance. Pesticides and antibiotics from agricultural activities represent a major source of water pollution. While photocatalysis shows promise in eliminating individual pollutants, its behavior and degradation mechanisms in binary pollutant systems remain poorly understood. In this work, using biochar/g-C 3 N 4 as the photocatalyst, the k values for the degradation of typical pesticides and antibiotics, namely azoxystrobin (AZO), tetracycline (TC), ofloxacin (OFX), sulfadiazine (SDZ), and atrazine (ATR), were 0.14144, 0.14467, 0.24850, 0.03145, and 0.01337 min −1 , respectively. The -ln( k ) values were positively correlated with the LUMO–HOMO gaps of these pollutants. Interestingly, in AZO-based binary systems, the -ln( k ) value of AZO was negatively correlated with the LUMO–HOMO gaps of the coexisting pollutants. Through density functional theory (DFT) calculations and UHPLC-Q Exactive MS analysis, five key intermediates of AZO degradation were identified, most of which were predicted to be less toxic than the parent compound. To enable practical water purification application and facilitate catalyst recovery, a BCN–PVDF photocatalytic purification membrane was fabricated. Under continuous operation for 12 h, the membrane achieved nearly complete removal of TC and OFX, 91.17% removal of AZO, and over 73% removal of SDZ and ATR. It also exhibited excellent anti-fouling and self-cleaning performance. This work elucidates structure–activity relationships in photocatalytic degradation of organic pollutants, reveals interaction mechanisms in binary pollutant systems, and demonstrates a feasible pathway toward the practical purification treatment of complex wastewater containing mixed contaminants. LiF and LiNO3 as synergistic additives for PEO-PVDF/LLZTO-based composite electrolyte towards high-voltage lithium batteries with dual-interfaces stability

Liansheng Li,Yuanfu Deng,Huanhuan Duan,Yunxian Qian,Guohua Chen

Solid electrolytes with desirable properties such as high ionic conductivity, wide electrochemical stable window, and suitable mechanical strength, and stable electrode–electrolyte interfaces on both cathode and anode side are essential for high-voltage all-solid-state lithium batteries (ASSLBs) to achieve excellent cycle stability. In this work, a novel strategy of using LiF and LiNO 3 as synergistic additives to boost the performance of PEO-PVDF/LLZTO-based composite solid electrolytes (CSEs) is developed, which also promotes the assembled high-voltage ASSLBs with dual-interfaces stability characteristic. Specifically, LiF as an inactive additive can increase the electrochemical stability of the CSE under high cut-off voltage, and improve the high-voltage compatibility between cathode and CSE, thus leading to a stable cathode/CSE interface. LiNO 3 as an active additive can lead to an enhanced ionic conductivity of CSE due to the increased free-mobile Li + and ensure a stable CSE/Li interface by forming stable solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) on Li anode surface. Benefiting from the improved performance of CSE and stable dual-interfaces, the assembled NCM622/9[PEO 15 -LiTFSI]-PVDF-15LLZTO-2LiF-3LiNO 3 /Li cell delivers a high rate capacity of 102.1 mAh g −1 at 1.0 C and a high capacity retention of 77.4% after 200 cycles at 0.5 C, which are much higher than those of the ASSLB assembled with additive-free CSE, with only 60.0 mAh g −1 and 52.0%, respectively. Furthermore, novel cycle test modes of resting for 5 h at different charge states after every 5 cycles are designed to investigate the high-voltage compatibility between cathode and CSE, and the results suggest that LiF additive can actually improve the high-voltage compatibility of cathode and CSE. All the obtained results confirm that the strategy of using synergistic additives in CSE is an effective way to achieve high-voltage ASSLBs with dual-interfaces stability.

Evaluating of the performance of natural mineral vermiculite modified PVDF membrane for oil/water separation by membrane fouling model and XDLVO theory

Tong Zhang,Jie Zhang,Qiaoying Wang,Hao Zhang,Zhiwei Wang,Zhichao Wu

A novel vermiculite nanoparticles (Verm NPs) modified poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) ultrafiltration membrane was firstly fabricated via surface coating at pH 7.2–7.3. The dense but porous modified surface formed by controlling the self-polymerization rate of dopamine at relatively weak alkalinity provided both high water flux and rejection rate of BSA, which broke the trade-off between permeability and rejection rate. The contact angle of optimal modified membrane decreased from 69.6° to 45.0°, showing the effectively enhancement of hydrophilicity. By filtrating two kinds of real oil-in-water emulsions, the stable flux of modified membrane was approximately 2 times higher than that of pristine membrane for both low and high concentration oil-in-water emulsions. In addition, the Verm-PVDF membrane also showed a higher removal efficiency of oil and total organic carbon . According to membrane fouling model analysis, the fouling behavior including adsorption, deposition, blockage of membrane pores and formation of cake layer had obviously alleviated after Verm modification for the two kinds of oil-in-water emulsions due to the formation of water layer by isomorphism substitution and surface hydroxylation of Verm NPs. Assessed by extended Derjaguin-Landau-Verwey-Overbeek (XDLVO) theory, Verm-PVDF membrane exhibited a higher energy barrier and an extremely strong repulsive force for foulants to overcome in low and high concentration emulsions during fouling. Overall, the improved antifouling ability and separation performance of modified membrane indicated that the inartificial Verm NPs was a robust material for pH-control membrane modification with potential application value in oil/water separation.

Potential effects of nano-fumed silica particles (NFS)/PVDF mixed matrix hollow fiber membrane on the performance of direct contact membrane distillation

Mohammed Karama Alsebaeai,Abdul Latif Ahmad,Ooi Boon Seng

Hydrophobic nano-fumed silica (NFS) was incorporated in polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) hollow fiber (HF) membrane for improving direct contact membrane distillation (DCMD) performance. The NFS/PVDF mixed matrix hollow fiber membrane was fabricated by the phase inversion process. The potential effects of increasing the percentage of NFS additive (0–6 wt.%) in the dope solution on the hollow fiber membrane characteristics such as viscosity, membrane morphology, porosity, hydrophobicity, Fourier transformed infrared spectroscopy, and permeability were investigated. The performance outcomes showed that the dope solution incorporated with 1.5 wt.% NFS exhibited the most promising HF membrane for membrane distillation (MD). The optimal HF membrane demonstrated the highest flux through shorter and narrower finger-like structure formation and targeted high porosity. The addition of NFS particle content in the dope solutions enhanced the hydrophobicity of the fabricated membranes while slightly decreasing the porosity due to increasing the viscosity of the dope solution. With a steady flux of 9.25 kg/m 2 h compared with the neat membrane at 70°C/20°C of feed/permeate temperatures, 8 h operation, and above 99.9% salt rejection, this PVDF/NFS mixed matrix hollow fiber membrane could be of excellent potential and sustainability in desalination process through DCMD.

Synergistic Enhancement of Photocatalytic CO2 Reduction by Built-in Electric Field/Piezoelectric Effect and Surface Plasmon Resonance via PVDF/CdS/Ag Heterostructure

Zijun Wei,Tuo Ji,Xuemei Zhou,Jiawei Guo,Xin Yu,Hong Liu,Jingang Wang

Photocatalytic reduction of CO 2 using solar energy is an effective means to achieve carbon neutrality. However, the photocatalytic efficiency still requires improvements. In this study, polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) ferroelectric/piezoelectric nanofiber membranes are prepared by electrospinning. Cadmium sulfide (CdS) nanosheets are assembled in situ on the surface of PVDF based on coordination between F − and Cd 2+ , and then Ag nanoparticles are deposited on CdS. Because of the synergistic effect between localized surface plasmon resonance of Ag nanoparticles and the built-in electric field of PVDF, the CO 2 photocatalytic reduction efficiency using PVDF/CdS/Ag under visible light irradiation is significantly higher than that of any combination of CdS, CdS/Ag, or PVDF/CdS. Under micro-vibration to simulate air flow, the CO 2 reduction efficiency of PVDF/CdS/Ag is three times higher than that under static conditions, reaching 240.4 µmol g −1 h −1 . The piezoelectric effect caused by micro-vibrations helps prevent the built-in electric field from becoming saturated with carriers and provides a continuous driving force for carrier separation.
