The synthesis of high-performance materials for purifying oily wastewater, especially stable oil-in-water emulsions that aromatic pollutants present in water, is of growing scientific and technological significance. Novel hierarchical architectures of Ag clusters deposited biomimetic membrane have been synthesized by ingeniously selecting the mussel-inspired polydopamine coatings as an intermedium layer followed by a facile wet chemical reduction method. The target micro-scaled Ag clusters which are composed of innumerable nanoparticles, firmly load on the surface of sub-micrometer polydopamine spheres (PDSs) benefiting from the chelating capacity and benign reduction ability of PDSs. The resultant Ag@PDSs deposited membrane with enormous specific surface area exhibits superhydrophilicity and underwater superoleophobicity, making it highly promising for efficient separation of various surfactant-stabilized oil-in-water emulsions and synchronously excellent catalytic reduction of water-soluble aromatic dyes. Moreover, such a construction mode can effectively prevent the aggregation and possible leaching of Ag particles, which greatly contributes to the outstanding cyclic performance and good antibacterial activity. All these features demonstrate that the two-step strategy is a facile approach to design and exploit the deposited Ag@PDSs composites for diverse actual applications in oil/water emulsion separation, catalysis and antibacterial agent.

Designing antimicrobials with high efficiency and long-term antibacterial activity is an imperative issue. We found that the antimicrobial effect of Ti3C2Tx and Ag/Ti3C2Tx could be significantly strengthened upon near-infrared light exposure. The synergistic antibacterial mode of the photothermal bactericidal effect and intrinsic bacterial activity have been revealed, which confirms that the Ti3C2Tx MXene is an excellent near-infrared light-mediated nanoplatform for antibacterial applications. To further test the antibacterial effect in practical applications, Ag/Ti3C2Tx embedded hydrogels were used as wound dressings in a wound model experiment. They exhibit outstanding bacterial inhibition and wound healing performance with near-infrared light exposure. This work inspires us to explore the MXene-based photothermal platform in terms of antibacterial application.

The printed electronic technology, a simple, low-cost, and high-throughput method, exhibits great potential applications in various fields, particularly in intelligent and tamper-evident packaging. In this study, an all-printed flexible sensor is prepared for sensing tamper-evident packaging by screen printing the water-based silver nanowires (Ag NWs) conductive ink onto a polyethylene terephthalate substrate. This bendable sensor shows a corresponding variation relationship between the resistance of the Ag NWs layer and bending angles. In addition, it presents a stable resistance sensitivity at the bending angles of 45°, 90°, and 135°. The mechanisms of different printed structures on the sensitivity of the sensor have been discussed. The results show that the straight-line sensor with a linewidth of 2.0 mm has the best sensitive performance (the gauge factors at bending angles of 45°, 90°, and 135° are 37.1, 39.3, and 39, respectively). Moreover, the sensor exhibits a long-term mechanical cyclic stability (no apparent decay after 1000 bending cycles) and excellent adhesion performance (no distinct increase in resistance after 20 times). Because of the excellent sensing performance, the Ag NWs-based flexible sensor can accurately detect the opening status of the packaging, showing promising potential for practical tamper-evident applications.

The removal of dibenzyl disulfide (DBDS) from transformer oils is vital to the sustainable operation of transformers. Here, Ag/γ-Al2O3 samples were prepared by a planetary mixer-assisted impregnation method and characterized. The effect of adsorption time and temperature on the equilibrium adsorption of DBDS onto Ag/γ-Al2O3 was discussed. The kinetics and isotherms of DBDS adsorption on the samples were studied. The desorption activation energy of DBDS was also estimated through temperature-programmed desorption (TPD) experiments. Results indicated that the DBDS adsorption capacities on Ag/γ-Al2O3 increased quickly within the first 3 h, and the highest DBDS adsorption capacity was 69.5 mg/g, which was 232, 107, and 5.6 times higher than that of active bentonite, γ-Al2O3, and active carbon, respectively. The adsorption isotherms were well fitted by the Langmuir model, and the adsorption kinetics followed the pseudo-second-order model. The desorption activation energy of DBDS on Ag/γ-Al2O3 was much higher than that on active carbon, indicating a strong interaction between DBDS and Ag/γ-Al2O3. Finally, the hard–soft acid–base (HSAB) principle was used to explain the adsorption mechanism, confirming that DBDS as a soft base can be preferentially adsorbed by Ag/γ-Al2O3 because Ag+ is a soft acid.

Capacitive deionization (CDI) by Ag@C electrodes is a promising desalination technology for chlorine removal because there is no waste flow and no additional chemicals used during the removal and regeneration/cleaning processes. However, its efficacy and capacity are significantly limited by the low stability of Ag/C composites during the electrochemical process. In this study, we synthesized a new highly stable structure of Ag@C composites (named as Ag/N-CNP) through reductive adsorption of Ag+ by a polyaromatic amine followed by carbonization. We used in situ Raman spectroscopy, for the first time, to monitor in real-time the Cl− electrosorption/desorption process of Ag/N-CNP electrodes, which revealed that the stability of Ag@C electrodes was mainly controlled by the dissolution of Ag. The newly synthesized Ag–Nx structure stabilized Ag nanoparticles and uniformly distributed Ag species on the carbon matrix, which resulted in a high affinity for Cl− and significantly improved cyclic dechlorination performance. Results showed that the electrosorption capacity of the newly synthesized Ag/N-CNP electrodes could reach 75.3 mg g−1, substantially higher than that of traditional carbon electrodes. Moreover, such a capacity had almost no loss (only 1.4% loss) after 50 continuous treatment cycles and could still retain 76% after 100 cycles, demonstrating a highly reliable and cost-effective desalination performance significantly superior to that of previously reported Ag@C electrodes.

Single-molecule (SM) detection in surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) demonstrates ultrahigh sensitivity and boosts wide applications. The bianalyte SERS (BiASERS) technique largely improves the accuracy and reliability of SM SERS detection over the monoanalyte approach by avoiding the use of ultralow-concentration samples and induced inaccuracy and very limited events. Herein, dual-type single-nanoparticle (SNP) SERS detection, an adapted version of the bianalyte SM technique, was developed for the first time with two types of ultrabright gap-enhanced resonance Raman tags (GERRTs) with embedded near-infrared resonant fluorescent molecules, showing concentration- and acquisition time-dependent behaviors and the SNP sensitivity in both aqueous and dry states. Additionally, a correlative Raman imaging and scanning electron (RISE) microscopy confirms the SNP events of GERRTs on the substrate. Therefore, we expand the feasible application scenarios of the BiASERS technique from merely SM to SNP detection and more importantly demonstrate the effectiveness of the pure statistical model of BiASERS with the undoubted experimental examinations. Dual-type SNP detection of GERRTs may open new opportunities for development of ultrasensitive nanotags for reliable localized and quantitative detection in biological environments.

Content of adenosine triphosphate (ATP) is an essential index in the development of various diseases and even some malignant tumors. Biosensing for ATP with high sensitivity and accuracy is of fundamental importance in both biological research and medical diagnostics. Here we report a ratiometric fluorescent sensor for ATP based on multi-color silver nanoclusters (Ag NCs). This nanosystem contains two core components: a hairpin DNA integrated with an ATP aptamer, an anchor sequence and a special template segment for synthesis of green-emitting Ag NCs; a single-stranded DNA (ssDNA) which is incompletely complementary with the anchor sequence to be a duplex scaffold for red-emitting Ag NCs. Once exposed to the target, formation of the ATP/aptamer complexes opens the hairpin structure and releases the anchor sequence to hybridize with the ssDNA, accompanied by the “turn-off” of the green fluorescence and “turn-on” of the red fluorescence. By measuring the fluorescence intensity ratio of the two signals, we successfully establish a ratiometric sensor which exhibits sensitive and accurate assay performance toward ATP, with the limit of detection (LOD) as low as 0.38 μM. Meanwhile, this ratiometric sensor shows stable recovery in real sample assay, indicating their potential promise in practical applications.

Early detection of prostate specific antigen (PSA) could reduce the mortality from prostate cancer. Electroactive nanostructures have attracted much attention due to their excellent electronic conductivity and favorable biological microenvironment. In particular, electroactive Cu 2 O nanoparticles (NPs) and Ag NPs exhibited unique oxidation signals at around -0.1 V and +0.2 V. The separated and non-interfere oxidation signals enabled them to be alternative electrochemical beacons for the establishment of ratiometric electrochemical sensor for PSA detection. Electroactive Cu 2 O NPs were designed to grow on the surface of reduced graphene oxide/Fe 3 O 4 nanosheets (rGO/Fe 3 O 4 NSs) and served as reference tags due to the stable differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) signals of Cu 2 O NPs, magnetic properties for the absorption on electrode and the accelerated electron transfer ability of rGO. In order to improve the sensitivity of detection, a large number of small electroactive Ag nanodots were dispersed on the surface of [email protected] (RF) NPs and served as detection tags. Electroactive [email protected] NPs were assembled with rGO/Fe 3 O 4 /Cu 2 O NSs for the fabrication of ratiometric electrochemical aptasensor. With the addition of PSA, aptamers modified [email protected] NPs disassembled from electrode surface, resulting in the decrease of DPV signals near +0.2 V and unchanged DPV signals at -0.1 V. This developed ratiometric electrochemical aptasensor achieved sensitive and accurate PSA detection. This proposed ratiometric electrochemical aptasensor has the advantages of easy preparation, simple structure and wide detection ranges.

Highly functionalized materials at the nanoscale on optical fibers offer notable opportunities to construct “lab-on-fiber” functional devices with unusual properties. However, it is extremely difficult to fabricate nanostructures with special morphology on a thin cylindrical optical fiber surface using the commonly used physical lithography techniques. Meanwhile, it is vital to maintain the plasmonic properties of Ag-riched particles while improving their stability. Herein, we design a facile strategy for the fabrication of Au–Ag bimetallic nanorings (Au–Ag NRs) immobilized on optical fibers for enhanced plasmonic properties. Ag NPs are first grown in situ on an optical fiber surface through chelation and redox of polydopamine (PDA) to metal ions, and then are quickly converted into Au–Ag NRs by a galvanic replacement reaction and metal deposition. This conversion only takes 3.5 min, while the formed Au–Ag NRs exhibit outstanding localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) sensitivity (2204 nm per RIU) and oxidation resistance, and Au and Ag atoms are distributed uniformly in the nanorings. Furthermore, a novel and interesting formation process of the nanorings including deformation, spallation, growth in the gaps, and ring formation is studied. These findings provide a way to grow bimetallic nanorings on optical fibers, which are promising candidates for photoelectric “lab-on-fiber” devices.

Macroporous terbium-doped Ca 12 Al 14 O 32 Cl 2 (C12A7:Tb 3+ ) monoliths were synthesized via a sol-gel route accompanied by phase separation, and the luminescence performances and detection of Ag + in water of the C12A7:Tb 3+ monoliths were investigated in detail. The simulation of the hydrolysis and dimerization reactions of C12A7:Tb 3+ shows that the hydrolysis and dimerization of Tb 3+ are prior to Al 3+ , and the doped Tb 3+ will affect the sol-gel transition of the system. The addition of Tb element changes the macrostructure derived from phase separation and sol-gel transition, and decreases the macropore size of C12A7 monolith. Heat treatment allows the formation of a single mayenite phase C12A7:Tb 3+ without spoiling the macrostructure, and the Tb 3+ ions replace the position of the Ca 2+ ions of the “cage” structure without destroying the lattice structure of C12A7. The luminescence intensity of C12A7:3%Tb 3+ monolith reaches the maximum, and the corresponding macropore size and porosity are 0.3 μm and 79% respectively. High luminescence intensity of C12A7:Tb 3+ monolith is attributed to higher scattering light and wonderful high temperature stability derived from the macrostructure. The obtained macroporous C12A7:Tb 3+ material has a sensitive response to Ag + ions, and can become a promising fluorescence sensor for the detection of Ag + ions.

Nowadays, energy shortage is one of the major problems in the world. Photocatalytic hydrogen production is a new type of energy technology with good application prospect. As a new type of photocatalytic semiconductor material, g-C 3 N 4 has attracted much attention as a photocatalyst . By ultrasonic treatment of a mixed solution of g-C 3 N 4 and bovine serum albumin, followed by adding a certain amount of silver nitrate solution and then directly hydrothermal treatment , a special dandelion-like g-C 3 N 4 /Ag (D-g-C 3 N 4 /Ag) was prepared. The scanning electronic microscopy, transmission electronic microscopy , X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared, fluorescence and physicochemical adsorption methods were used to characterize the morphology and structure of D-g-C 3 N 4 /Ag. In addition, the photocatalytic H 2 production of D-g-C 3 N 4 /Ag with different Ag loadings or in different sacrificial agents and different pH conditions were investigated. The results indicated that when triethanolamine was used as sacrificial agent, photocatalytic hydrogen efficiency was the best, and the rate of photocatalytic hydrogen production reached 862 μmol g −1 h − 1 as the Ag loading was 4%.

In this study, a novel signal-amplified immunosensor was designed by using a microwave-assisted self-assembly method to synthesize ZnFe 2 O 4 -Ag/rGO nanocomposites. The conductivity of ZnFe 2 O 4 -rGO nanocomposites was significantly improved due to the effective inhibition of rGO accumulation by the insertion of ZnFe 2 O 4 and Ag nanoparticles (NPs) into graphene sheets. Excellent sensitivity and reproducibility were achieved through the microwave-assisted preparation of ZnFe 2 O 4 -Ag/rGO nanocomposites as a substrate, with the Ag NPs enhancing the signal because of the effective conductive matrix. The layer assembly process of the immunosensor was verified by cyclic voltammetry and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. Under optimal conditions, the fabricated immunosensor showed good linearity over a wide concentration range from 1 pg mL −1 to 200 ng mL −1 with a low detection limit of 0.98 pg mL −1 , and exhibited excellent specificity, good stability, and reproducibility. These qualities can contribute to the successful application of a label-free immunosensor in the detection of AFP in human serum.
