Exploration of stabilization mechanism of polyol-in-oil-in-water quercetin-loaded Pickering double emulsions

Rong Liang,Jiahui Yang,Chunhuan Liu,Cheng Yang

The low solubility of quercetin considerably decreases its loading efficiency in traditional water and oil-based emulsion systems, which has limited their applications. To find a solution to this issue, in this investigation, polyol consisting of dipropylene glycol and glycerol as a solvent was used to increase quercetin solubility. It was further incorporated in polyol-in-oil-in-water Pickering double emulsions stabilized by SiO 2 . The characterization of these Pickering double emulsions was performed by analyses of their microscopic structures, particle sizes, rheology, and storage stability. The rise in the concentration of quercetin from 0 to 0.60 wt% decreased the droplet size of these emulsions and increased their viscoelasticity and storage stability. The microstructure of the emulsions showed the presence of some quercetin on the water-oil interface, suggesting that this bioactive compound might have recrystallized from the internal polyol phase during the preparation and then acted as a particle stabilizer in synergy with SiO 2 . To test and validate this hypothesis, we examined the Pickering stabilization properties of the recrystallization quercetin and its interaction with SiO 2 . We found that the recrystallized quercetin interacted with SiO 2 through a hydrogen bond and co-stabilized the interface. Additionally, it also served as a thickener that was involved in the development of an intense entangled network structure that connected the droplets, which improved the emulsion stability. These results revealed an effective approach for the preparation of stable Pickering double emulsions with high quercetin loading.

Degradation of carbon tetrachloride in thermally activated persulfate system in the presence of formic acid

Xu Minhui,Gu Xiaogang,Lu Shuguang,Miao Zhouwei,Zang Xueke,Wu Xiaoliang,Qiu Zhaofu,Sui Qian

The thermally activated persulfate (PS) degradation of carbon tetrachloride (CT) in the presence of formic acid (FA) was investigated. The results indicated that CT degradation followed a zero order kinetic model, and CO – 2 · was responsible for the degradation of CT confirmed by radical scavenger tests. CT degradation rate increased with increasing PS or FA dosage, and the initial CT had no effect on CT degradation rate. However, the initial solution pH had effect on the degradation of CT, and the best CT degradation occurred at initial pH 6. Cl – had a negative effect on CT degradation, and high concentration of Cl – displayed much strong inhibition. Ten mmol·L –1 HCO – 3 promoted CT degradation, while 100 mmol·L – 1NO – 3 inhibited the degradation of CT, but SO 2– 4 promoted CT degradation in the presence of FA. The measured Cl–concentration released into solution along with CT degradation was 75.8% of the total theoretical dechlorination yield, but no chlorinated intermediates were detected. The split of C-Cl was proposed as the possible reaction pathways in CT degradation. In conclusion, this study strongly demonstrated that the thermally activated PS system in the presence of FA is a promising technique in in situ chemical oxidation (ISCO) remediation for CT contaminated site.

Unveiling the reaction process of the amine in direct amidation of aromatic ketones in H2O

Fangjun He,Rumeng Qu,Jie Su,Muyao Du,Junqiang Liu,Yiping Chen,Bo Wang

Graphical Solving the puzzle : The role of the amine in direct amidation of aromatic ketones has been investigated. Amines act as both the reactant and catalyst, as such the excess amount (two or more equivalents) of amines are required to afford reasonable conversions/yields in the classical amidation. The direct amidation of aromatic ketones has been achieved at mild reaction conditions. In the classical amidation between aromatic ketones and amines, 2.0 equivalents of amines are necessarily required to gain satisfying yields. The specific role of the amine in the direct amidation already puzzled us for a long time. In this work, we disclosed that the amine acts as both reactant and catalyst. Specifically, the determination of reaction intermediates revealed the full mechanism, based on which, the introduction of one equivalent base in the amidation is showcased here that a high yield (∼95 %) can be afforded using only 1.1 equiv. of amine.

Boron Compound–Based Treatments Against Multidrug-Resistant Bacterial Infections in Lung Cancer In Vitro Model

Celebı Demet,Celebı Ozgur,Aydin Elif,Baser Sumeyye,Güler Mustafa Can,Yildirim Serkan,Taghizadehghalehjoughi Ali

Multidrug-resistant bacteria is one of the most important public health problems. Increasing rates of antibacterial resistance also affect the outcomes of medical approaches. Cancer treatment because of immune system deficiency (chemotherapy or steroids usage) commonly can cause infection. Lung cancer is the dominant cause of cancer-related deaths, and infection is the most common cause of death among those patients. In this study, it was aimed to determine the antimicrobial, antibiofilm, and anticancer activity of boron compounds. A549 lung cancer cell line was infected with Acinetobacter baumannii (ATCC 19606), Klebsiella pneumoniae (ATCC 700603), and Pseudomonas aeruginosa (ATCC 27853). In order to determine the fractional inhibitory concentration (FIC) index, antibiotics and boron compound concentrations prepared according to the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) values were determined by the checkerboard method. In our study results, the antibiofilm activity was an average of 46% in A. baumannii +boron compounds, 45% in P. aeruginosa +boron compounds, and 43% in K. pneumoniae . Cell culture analysis results show a decrease in viability and antioxidant capacity and an increase in total oxidant status after adding boron compounds to the culture. Immunofluorescence results show a correlation with MTT, and boron compounds increased 8-OHdG expression in comparison to antibiotic administration. In conclusion, boron compounds have promising effects on bacteria, especially in resistant bacteria spp.

Laser In-Situ synthesis of metallic cobalt decorated porous graphene for flexible In-Plane microsupercapacitors

Yifan Rao,Min Yuan,Feng Luo,Hui Li,Jiabing Yu,Xianping Chen

Transition metal nanoparticles-graphene nanocomposites incorporate the advantages of graphene and metal nanoparticles, which arouse extensive attention. Here, we design a novel, facile and versatile method for in-situ synthesis of laser-induced porous graphene (LIG) decorated with cobalt particles (Co). The LIG/Co nanocomposites are fabricated through one-step laser direct scribing on a customized film composed of polyimide (PI) powder, polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), and cobalt chloride (CoCl 2 ·6H 2 O) precursors. Benefiting from the unique properties of Co nanoparticles embedded LIG, the obtained optimal in-plane micro-supercapacitors (IMSC) based on LIG/Co-1.5 possesses an excellent areal capacitance of 110.11 mF cm −2 and a superior energy density of 9.79 μWh cm −2 , which are about 79 times that of pure LIG-based IMSCs. Simultaneously, the LIG/Co-1.5 MSCs also present good cycling stability, remarkable modular integration capability, and outstanding mechanical flexibility, showing potential for practical applications. Additionally, the density functional theory (DFT) calculations indicate that the decorating of cobalt particles elevates electron transfer. Moreover, the interaction between electrolyte and electrodes is also improved with the introduction of cobalt particles. Therefore, this strategy offers a new avenue for facile and large-scale manufacturing of various metallic atoms in-situ decorating in porous graphene.

Synergistic effect of corn fiber gum and chitosan in stabilization of oil in water emulsion

Yuntao Wang,Shasha Wang,Rui Li,Yu Wang,Qisen Xiang,Si Qiu,Wei Xu,Yanhong Bai

In recent years, emulsions stabilized by natural substances have attracted great interests of scientists. As both the emulsifying properties of chitosan (CH) and corn fiber gum (CFG) are poor, the different complex of CH and CFG were used to stabilize emulsion. It was found that the CH-CFG complex had significantly better emulsifying properties than CH or CFG at the same concentration, indicating they played a synergistic role in stabilizing oil in water emulsion. Cryo-SEM results showed that the CH-CFG complex formed a dense interfacial film on the surface of the oil droplets, forming a barrier that effectively prevented the flocculation of droplets, thus improving the stability of the emulsion. The changed surface zeta potential, interfacial activity and viscosity of CH-CFG complex compared with CH or CFG due to the interaction of CH and CFG contributed to the improved emulsifying properties of CH-CFG complex.

In situ charge neutralization on governing particle coagulation nucleation and size distribution in macroemulsion polymerization

B. J. Liu,W. T. Meng,M. Y. Zhang,H. X. Zhang

Fabricating monodispersed polymer latex particles with ∼300 nm size at high monomer concentrations by batch macroemulsion polymerization remains significantly challenging because of latex stability. In this study, we developed a novel approach based on in situ charge neutralization to prepare 40 wt% solid content latex containing monodispersed sub-300 nm latex particles. The cationic initiator 2,2′-azobis(2-methylpropionamidine)dihydrochloride (AIBA) was used to induce in situ charge neutralization in the particle nucleation period and shield the negative charges of surfactant sodium dodecyl sulfate molecules to further reduce the electrostatic repulsion between primary particles, resulting in primary particle coagulation nucleation. The primary particle coagulation promoted particle number decreased to ∼1016 L−1, and the average particle size increased to ∼100 nm at a very low monomer conversion (<0.12). With increasing AIBA concentrations from 0.6 and 0.8 to 1.0 wt% (the molar ratio of AIBA/SDS is 0.64, 0.85 and 1.06, respective), the average particle size of the latex ultimately attained from 170.6 and 221.7 to 288.0 nm, respectively. Moreover, the addition of an electrolyte and copolymerization composition also governed the particle coagulation extent and affected the particle size distribution of the ultimate latex particles. To the best of our knowledge, this is the simplest, most efficient, and inexpensive approach to prepare large sized, monodispersed latex particles.

Plastic luminescence in mechanoluminescent composites

Jianbo Fei,Jun Xiao,Dengfeng Peng,Xiangsheng Chen

Mechanoluminescence (ML) materials are a novel class of substance that emit light in response to mechanical stimuli. When combined with other materials, their luminescence mechanisms remain unclear, especially during irreversible plastic deformation. In this study, an ML material [(3ZnS/2CaZnOS) 0.98 SrZnOS 0.02 :2%Mn 2+ ] was developed and incorporated into epoxy resin to fabricate ML-composite cubic, cylindrical, and spherical specimens. Plastic luminescence of the ML composites was observed after yielding in uniaxial compression tests. Supported by numerical simulations, a strong correlation between luminescence intensity of ML composites and plastic strain was revealed. This indicates that plastic deformation was found to be closely associated with the observed luminescence of homogeneous ML composites. In more complex granular systems, ML-composite particles were synthesized for compression and ring-shear experiments. The results demonstrated that the interparticle frictional slip, a general form of plasticity in granular assembly, coincided with the recorded luminescence. These findings provide critical insights for the luminescence in ML composites during the plastic stage.

Arrested coalescence in structured liquids

Li Peifan,Feng Weixiao,Wen Yunhui,Luo Yuzheng,Liu Xueqing,Shi Shaowei

Structuring liquids can be achieved by the assembly and jamming of particles at the oil-water interface. However, this typically requires surface modification of particles or co-assembly with polymer ligands to enhance interfacial binding energies. Here, we show a simple and robust strategy to structure liquids by using water-soluble, star-shaped β-cyclodextrin (β-CD) derivatives, whose interfacial assembly is driven by supramolecular interactions with oil solvents. Three classes of solvents including alkanes, aromatic hydrocarbons and halohydrocarbons are examined, leading to distinct interfacial binding energies of β-CD derivatives and different liquid structuring and coalescence behaviors. In aromatic hydrocarbon/water biphasic systems, β-CD derivatives form jammed yet porous interfacial assemblies that combine mechanical rigidity with high free volume. As a result, the liquids are shapeable, reconfigurable and capable of arrested coalescence upon gentle contact, opening opportunities for programmable liquid constructs, soft robots, and related applications.

Pressure-induced superconductivity in SnSb2Te4

Yanmei Ma,Hongbo Wang,Ruihong Li,Han Liu,Jian Zhang,Xianyu Wang,Qiang Jing,Xu Wang,Wenping Dong,Jinman Chen,Bingze Wu,Yonghao Han,Dan Zhou,Chunxiao Gao

Owing to their unique compositional and structural characteristics, layered van der Waals solids in binary and ternary chalcogenide families provide a fertile testbed for exploring novel exotic structures and states, e.g., topological insulators and superconductors. Herein, a comprehensive study on the structural variations and correlated electrical transport behavior of SnSb2Te4, a ternary member, has been carried out considering elevated pressures. Under 45.6 GPa, three distinct structural phase transitions have been observed, with strong evidence from the variations of high-pressure X-ray diffraction patterns. The onsets of phase II (monoclinic, C2/m) at 6.3 GPa, phase III (monoclinic, C2/c) at 15.5 GPa, and phase IV (body-centered cubic with substitutional disorder, Im-3m) at 17.2 GPa have been observed owing to the emergence of new diffractions. Based on electrical measurements at low temperature and high pressure conditions, two pressure-induced superconducting states have been distinguished in SnSb2Te4. The first state occurs in the range of 12.3-17.1 GPa. The positive pressure dependence on Tc indicates that the aforementioned state is related to the monoclinic C2/m phase. At > 17.1 GPa, the second superconducting state emerges, with the negative pressure dependence on Tc. It relates to the body-centered cubic solid solution phase, which is characteristic of a substitutional disordered crystal structure. The discovery that the pressure-induced superconductivity in SnSb2Te4 is affected by structural phase transitions under pressure may help understand the universal relationship between the ambient condition topological insulating state and derived superconductivity. Ab initio theoretical calculations reveal that an electronic topological transition takes place at approximately 2.0 GPa, which is featured by the obvious changes in the distribution of electronic density of states near the Fermi level.

Magnetoelectric Effect in Garnet Mn3Al2Ge3O12

Jiahua Min,Shuhan Zheng,Jingwen Gong,Xiyu Chen,Fei Liu,Yunlong Xie,Yongjun Zhang,Zhen Ma,Meifeng Liu,Xiuzhang Wang,Hong Li,Jun-Ming Liu

Searching for novel magnetoelectric (ME) materials has been one of the major issues of multiferroics. In this work, we present a systematic research study on garnet Mn3Al2Ge3O12, including structural, magnetic, heat capacity, and ME characterizations. Below the Néel temperature TN ∼ 6.8 K, Mn2+ spins form a long-range antiferromagnetic order, and a magnetic field H-driven electric polarization P is identified simultaneously. The relationship between P and H is nonlinear under low H and becomes linear under high H. Such transition is believed to originate from the H-induced variation of the magnetic structure. In addition, the P reaches 0.6 μC/m2 under μ0H = 9 T, corresponding to an ME coupling coefficient of αME ∼ 0.08 ps/m under high H. The small αME is attributed to the weak spin–orbit coupling and weak magnetic interactions in Mn3Al2Ge3O12. Furthermore, we realize the stable control of P by periodically varying H, which is crucial for potential application. We provide a rare case that a garnet material shows a first-order ME effect.
