The nanohybrid of electrochemically-reduced graphene oxide (ERGO) nanosheets decorated with MnO2nanorods (MnO2NRs) was modified on the surface of a glassy carbon electrode (GCE). Controlled potential reduction was applied for the reduction of graphene oxide (GO). The characterization was performed by scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction and cyclic voltammetry. Compared with the poor electrochemical response at bare GCE, a well-defined oxidation peak of sunset yellow (SY) was observed at the MnO2NRs-ERGO/GCE, which was attributed to the high accumulation efficiency as well as considerable electrocatalytic activity of ERGO and MnO2NRs on the electrode surface. The experimental parameters for SY detection were optimized in detail. Under the optimized experiment conditions, the MnO2NRs-ERGO/GCE showed good linear response to SY in concentration range of 0.01–2.0 μM, 2.0–10.0 μM and 10.0–100.0 μM with a detection limit of 2.0 nM. This developed method was applied for SY detection in soft drinks with satisfied detected results.

The authors describe a novel method for the determination of glutathione (GSH). Detection is based on target induced release of glucose from MnO 2 nanosheet-gated aminated mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSNs). In detail, glucose is loaded into the pores of MSNs. Negatively charged MnO 2 nanosheets are assembled on the MSNs through electrostatic interactions. The nanosheets are reduced by GSH, and this results in the release of glucose which is quantified by using a commercial electrochemical glucose meter. GSH can be quantified by this method in the 100 nM to 10 μM concentration range, with a 34 nM limit of detection.

Screening of foodborne pathogens is an effective way to prevent microbial food poisoning. A microfluidic biosensor was developed for rapid and sensitive detection ofSalmonellaTyphimurium using quantum dots (QDs) as fluorescent probes for sensor readout and manganese dioxide nanoflowers (MnO2NFs) and as QDs nanocarriers for signal amplification. Prior to testing, amino-modified MnO2nanoflowers (MnO2-NH2NFs) were conjugated with carboxyl-modified QDs through EDC/NHSS method to form MnO2-QD NFs, and MnO2-QD NFs were functionalized with polyclonal antibodies (pAbs) to form MnO2-QD-pAb NFs. First, the mixture of targetSalmonellaTyphimurium cells and magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) modified with monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) was injected with MnO2-QD-pAb NFs into a microfluidic chip to form MNP-bacteria-QD-MnO2complexes. Then, glutathione (GSH) was injected to dissolve MnO2on the complexes into Mn2+, resulting in the release of QDs. Finally, fluorescent intensity of the released QDs was measured using the fluorescent detector to determine the amount ofSalmonella. A linear relationship between fluorescent intensity and bacterial concentration from 1.0 × 102to 1.0 × 107CFU/mL was found with a low detection limit of 43 CFU/mL and mean recovery of 99.7% forSalmonellain spiked chicken meats, indicating the feasibility of this biosensor for practical applications. Keywords:Microfluidic biosensor;manganese dioxide nanoflowers;quantum dots;magnetic nanoparticles;SalmonellaTyphimurium

Organophosphorus pesticides (OPs) are extensively used worldwide as agrochemicals; however, excess use may threaten the health of humans. Thus, it is an urgent need to develop a sensitive method for determination of OPs. Herein, a simple and sensitive split-type electrochemical method was developed by using MnO 2 nanoflower-electron mediator as a signal transduction element. The MnO 2 nanoflower-electron mediator was synthesized and shows an excellent electrochemical signal attributed to the high specific surface area of MnO 2 nanoflower. Meanwhile, the inhibition of OPs on butyrylcholinesterase (BChE) was carried out in the homogeneous system. In the absence of target molecule, a large number of thiocholines (TCh) were yielded from hydrolysis of acetylthiocholine (ATCh) by BChE. The MnO 2 nanoflower was cracked, and subsequently, multiple electron mediator molecules were released from the platform after treated with TCh, thus decreasing the electrochemical response. Furthermore, the inhibition of OPs on BChE resulted in the reduced generation of TCh, thus inducing the recovery of electrochemical signal. Under the optimal experimental, dichlorvos can be detected in a wide range of 10 −6 –10 −10 M, with a detection limit of 3 × 10 −10 M. Moreover, the assay was successfully used to analyze dichlorvos in cucumber juice and pear juice, showing a great promising potential for detecting organophosphorus pesticides in complex samples.
In this assay, a split-type electrochemical biosensor was proposed for the ultrasensitive determination of organophosphorus pesticides based on the MnO 2 nanoflower-electron mediator as an electrochemical signal component.

In spite of widespread applications of nano-photosensitizers, poor tumor penetration and severe hypoxia in the tumor microenvironment (TME) always result in an undesirable therapeutic outcome of photodynamic therapy (PDT). Herein, a biocompatible agarose-based hydrogel incorporated with sodium humate (SH), manganese oxide (MnO2) and chlorin e6 (Ce6) was synthesized as agarose@SH/MnO2/Ce6 through a “co-trapped” strategy during a sol–gel process and employed for combined photothermal therapy (PTT) and enhanced PDT. NIR-induced local hyperthermia is responsible for not only activating Ce6 release, but also triggering the catalytic decomposition of H2O2 mediated by MnO2 to relieve hypoxia. Such a hybrid hydrogel can realize deep tissue penetration through intratumoral injection, and exhibit remarkable tumor-site retention. Moreover, programmed laser irradiation led to an extremely high tumor growth inhibition rate of 93.8% in virtue of enhanced PTT/PDT. In addition, ultralow systemic toxicity caused by the hybrid hydrogel was further demonstrated in vivo. This reliable and eco-friendly hydrogel paves the way for the development of smart gel-based biomaterials, which respond to both exogenous and endogenous stimuli, towards the management of cancer and other major diseases.

Near infrared (NIR) emission Ag 2 S quantum dots (QDs) are of great value for biochemical sensing with strong anti-interference and low toxicity. Herein, NIR fluorescence Ag 2 S QDs were synthesized successfully. Combined with the excellent oxidase-like characteristics of manganese dioxide (MnO 2 ) nanosheets, a fluorescence and colorimetric dual-mode sensor for sulfide anion was developed. MnO 2 nanosheets could effectively catalyze the oxidation of TMB to produce blue TMB oxide (ox TMB), at the same time, the fluorescence of Ag 2 S QDs could be effectively quenched by fluorescence internal filtration effect (IFE) and dynamic quenching effect. The enzyme-like activity was weakened and the NIR fluorescence of Ag 2 S QDs was restored when sulfide anion (S 2− ) was added, due to the reduction of MnO 2 to Mn 2+ .The linear ranges for fluorescence and colorimetric analysis of S 2− were 2–250 μM and 0.3–50 μM, with detection limits of 0.6 and 0.215 μM, correspondingly. The dual-mode sensor had a wider detection range, higher sensitivity and shorter reaction time, which could be used for highly selective detection of S 2− in different concentration ranges. In addition, it had been successfully applied to the determination of sulfide in water samples with satisfactory accuracy and sensitivity.

Credible and on-site detection of organophosphorus pesticides (OPs) in complex matrixes is significant for food security and environmental monitoring. Herein, a novel COF/methylene blue@MnO2 (COF/MB@MnO2) composite featured abundant signal loading, a specific recognition unit, and robust oxidase-like activity was successfully prepared through facile assembly processes. The multifunctional composite acted as a homogeneous electrochemical and photothermal dual-mode sensing platform for OPs detection through stimuli-responsive regulation. Without the presence of OPs, the surface MnO2 coating could recognize thiocholine (TCh), originating from acetylcholinesterase (AChE)-catalyzed hydrolysis of acetylthiocholine (ATCh), and exhibited a distinctly amplified diffusion current due to the release of plentiful MB; while the residual MnO2 nanosheets could only catalyze less TMB into oxidized TMB (oxTMB) with a typical near-infrared (NIR) absorption, enabling NIR-driven photothermal assay with a low temperature using a portable thermometer. Based on the inhibitory effect of OPs on AChE activity and OP-regulated generation of TCh, chlorpyrifos as a model target can be accurately detected with a low limit of detection of 0.0632 and 0.108 ng/mL by complementary electrochemical and photothermal measurements, respectively. The present dual-mode sensor was demonstrated to be excellent for application to the reliable detection of OPs in complex environmental and food samples. This work can not only provide a complementary dual-mode method for convenient and on-site detection of OPs in different scenarios but also expand the application scope of the COF-based multifunctional composite in multimodal sensors.

The construction of visible-light-driven hybrid heterostructure photocatalysts is of great significance for environmental remediation, although the utilization of strong visible-light response photocatalysts with high efficiency and stability remains a major challenge. On the other hand, defect engineering is an excellent way to introduce metal cation vacancies in materials, thereby ensuing in highly enhanced catalytic performance. Inspired by this, we effectively constructed a built-in interface α-MnO 2 /Bi 2 WO 6 heterostructure with abundant intimate interfaces and defective Mn 3+ /Mn 4+ active sites for photocatalytic tetracycline hydrochloride (TC-HCl), hexavalent chromium Cr 6+ reduction, and Escherichia coli ( E. coli ) inactivation. The experimental results, such as the active species test and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, indicated that the defective sites Mn 3+ /Mn 4+ , surface oxygen vacancies, and Bi (3+x)+ boosted the visible light absorption, and highly enhanced the photoinduced charge separation/transfer. Furthermore, experimental and DFT calculations reveal the high charge density at the built-in interface heterostructure and the Z-scheme charge transfer mechanism during the photocatalytic process. The results further reveal that O 2 − and 1 O 2 are the main reactive active species contributing to the photocatalytic reaction. The exceptional TC-HCl decomposition activity of the α-MnO 2 /Bi 2 WO 6 heterostructure (97.56%, 2.31, and 2.04 times higher than bulk), enhanced reaction kinetics (K app = 0.041 min −1 , 6.4, and 5.2 times higher than bulk), removal rate of 80.3%, Cr 6+ reduction to Cr 3+ (98.56%, K app = 0.0599 min −1 ), and almost 100% bacterial inactivation compared to bulk α-MnO 2 (42.22%) and Bi 2 WO 6 (47.76%), were mainly due to the enhanced charge separation/transfer at the built-in interface and high charge density. This study opens new horizons for constructing Z-scheme MnO-based interface heterostructures with abundant defect sites for exceptional photocatalytic applications.

Micromotors that combine the merits of micro-devices with specific functions and autonomous motion have numerous applications in environmental remediation. However, their practical application is blocked by low productivity, a complex preparation process and high cost. Herein, we developed a facile biomass route to synthesize ion-imprinted MnO2/CoFe2O4 Janus micromotors with appealing recognition and capture capacities for Pb(II) ions. Owing to the combination of autonomous motion, the ion imprinting technique, and magnetic recovery, the ion-imprinted MnO2/CoFe2O4 Janus micromotors exhibited highly sensitive and selective adsorption and quick removal of lead ions from water. Such a Janus micromotor reveals great potential in environmental remediation.

A new kind of norfloxacin-imprinted polymer was prepared by the self-polymerization of dopamine on the surface of a multi-function MnO2 nanosheet-decorated magnetic carbon fiber (CF/Fe3O4/MnO2), denoted as CF/Fe3O4/MnO2/MIPs. These novel CF/Fe3O4/MnO2/MIPs displayed high binding capacity toward fluoroquinolones (FQs) due to the high specific area and thin imprinted layer. A new method employing dispersive solid-phase extraction, coupled with high-performance liquid chromatography (DSPE-HPLC), was developed for the determination of three FQs, norfloxacin, ciprofloxacin, and enrofloxacin. The presented method was linear over a calibration range of 5–1 × 104 μg/L, with detection limits ranging from 2.3 to 6.4 μg/L. The recovery of norfloxacin, ciprofloxacin, and enrofloxacin from milk samples ranged from 85.7 to 98.6%, with intra- and inter-day precision of less than 5.2%.

The position of the catalyst in a plasma reactor has an important effect on performance of plasma driven catalytic reaction. An operando diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy (DRIFTS) and mass spectrometry (MS) has been used to investigate CO oxidation on MnO 2 catalyst in in-plasma catalysis (IPC) and post-plasma catalysis (PPC) configurations. It was found that the catalyst in IPC configuration has higher CO conversion and CO 2 selectivity than that in PPC configuration. Operando DRIFTS-MS analysis showed that the IPC configuration generated more reactive oxygen species (M O) on the catalyst surface than the PPC configuration, where M O, M 2+ -O 2 2– , and M + O 2 – are important reactive species promoting CO oxidation to monodentate carbonate that is easy to gasify to gaseous CO 2 . The physical adsorbed O 3 on the catalyst in PPC configuration converts to M 2+ -O 2 2– which combines with CO to form bidentate carbonates that is difficult to gasify to gaseous CO 2 . The mechanisms of CO oxidation on the catalyst in IPC and PPC configurations are discussed.

Emerging nanotechnologies in cancer therapy increasingly highlight the importance of integrating therapeutic and diagnostic functions into a single platform for enhanced efficacy and real-time monitoring. Here, we present a vortex‐shaped nanoring Fe 3 O 4 @MnO 2 @PDA (polydopamine) engineered for dual‐mode T 1 – T 2 magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)‐guided, dual‐thermal, and Fenton‐like chemodynamic therapy (CDT). The ring‐shaped nano Fe 3 O 4 core provides magnetothermal hyperthermia, while the MnO 2 layer, acting as a responsive nanozyme, catalyzes endogenous H 2 O 2 to generate oxygen and bolster CDT. Meanwhile, the PDA coating efficiently absorbs near‐infrared light, amplifying photothermal effects for tumor ablation. Under dual‐heating conditions, the temperature rise rate (2.05–2.92 times) and final equilibrium temperatures (1.57–2.27 times) exceed those of single‐mode heating, underscoring a robust synergistic effect. Additionally, due to the shell’s shielding effect weakening T 2 signals and the tumor microenvironment enhancing T 1 relaxation, the T 1 (5.75 Mm −1 s −1 ) to T 2 (91.56 mM −1 s −1 ) ratio is optimized specifically at tumor sites, thus achieving effective dual‐modal MRI contrast. Moreover, the smart MnO 2 design not only furnishes dynamic imaging enhancements but also enables environment‐triggered Mn 2+ release, offering further diagnostic and therapeutic benefits. In vitro and in vivo evaluations confirm significant tumor suppression with minimal systemic toxicity. These findings position nanoring Fe 3 O 4 @MnO 2 @PDA as a promising dual‐mode MRI‐guided, dual‐thermal, and chemodynamic platform for advanced cancer therapy.
