Polymer-based dielectric materials have been used in film capacitors due to their rapid charge–discharge rate, lightness, and low cost. Nevertheless, the energy storage properties of these dielectric films were limited by their weak polarization ability and low discharge energy density. Herein, the solution casting method was used to prepare all-organic crosslinked composite films using linear methyl methacrylate-co-glycidyl methacrylate (MG) as the matrix and ferroelectric poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) as the organic filler. The crosslinked MG networks can enhance the breakdown strength, restrain dielectric loss, and keep high discharge efficiency. What's more, the presence of PVDF can compensate for the low electrical displacement, improve the permittivity, and overcome the brittleness of the crosslinked films. The optimal all-organic crosslinked dielectric film exhibited an ultrahigh breakdown strength of 800 MV m−1 and a high efficiency of 77.4%. The maximum energy density of the composite film reached up to 12.1 J cm−3, which was nearly 120% higher than the energy density of 5.6 J cm−3 of the pure MG film. The enhancement in energy storage properties is ascribed to the synergistic effects of chemical crosslinking and hydrogen bonding. This study offers a feasible method for all-organic polymer films to fabricate energy storage equipment.

Photocatalytic reduction of CO 2 using solar energy is an effective means to achieve carbon neutrality. However, the photocatalytic efficiency still requires improvements. In this study, polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) ferroelectric/piezoelectric nanofiber membranes are prepared by electrospinning. Cadmium sulfide (CdS) nanosheets are assembled in situ on the surface of PVDF based on coordination between F − and Cd 2+ , and then Ag nanoparticles are deposited on CdS. Because of the synergistic effect between localized surface plasmon resonance of Ag nanoparticles and the built-in electric field of PVDF, the CO 2 photocatalytic reduction efficiency using PVDF/CdS/Ag under visible light irradiation is significantly higher than that of any combination of CdS, CdS/Ag, or PVDF/CdS. Under micro-vibration to simulate air flow, the CO 2 reduction efficiency of PVDF/CdS/Ag is three times higher than that under static conditions, reaching 240.4 µmol g −1 h −1 . The piezoelectric effect caused by micro-vibrations helps prevent the built-in electric field from becoming saturated with carriers and provides a continuous driving force for carrier separation.

The design of core-shell structure is considered as a facile approach to obtain polymer composites with excellent dielectric properties and high breakdown strength (E b ). In this work, thiol-terminated poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF-SH) and polystyrene (PS-SH) are synthesized by a two-step process. The as-prepared polymers are applied to modify BaTiO 3 (BT) nanoparticles . The subsequent morphologies, dielectric properties, and E b of PVDF-based composites are investigated systematically. PVDF encapsulated BT (PVDF@BT) fillers carries more desirable compatibility with matrix compared with PS encapsulated BT (PS@BT) and raw BT. For instance, the E b of the 30 vol% PVDF@BT composites slightly decreased from 150.6 to 117 kV/mm for PVDF matrix, as compared to the raw and PS@BT composites, for those the values intensively reduced to 58.5 kV/mm and 107 kV/mm, respectively. It is also observed that PVDF polymer shells play a significant role in the improvement of composites dielectric constant (ε r ). Moreover, the design of the polymer shell also contributes to the suppression of dielectric loss. The results are of great importance for understanding the effect of polymer shells and fluorinated filler on composite properties. This study provides a strategy for preparing composites with high ε r while maintaining high E b for the next generation of dielectric capacitors.

A novel composite based on hydrophilic boehmite-PVB/PVDF blended membrane- immobilized nanoscale zero-valent iron (nZVI) (BPPN) was synthesized. When the initial concentration of Cr(VI) was 20 mg/L, 100% Cr(VI) was removed by BPPN at an initial pH of 4.08 under room temperature of 25 °C within 90 min. In addition, the reactivity of the regenerated BPPN composites toward Cr(VI) removal were not obviously declined after 6 cycles. The resultant BPPN demonstrated high reactivity, preeminent stability and reusability in the reaction course. Meanwhile, the BPPN composites showed a higher removal efficiency toward the removal of Cr(VI) compared with alumina-PVB/PVDF-nZVI (APPN) composites. The plentiful hydroxyl groups of boehmit on the BPPN surface resulted in the enhancement in hydrophilicity and improved Fe 0 loading of the BPPN composites. For environmental parameters, results indicated that there was a negative effect of increasing the initial concentration or decreasing reaction temperature toward the removal of Cr(VI) by BPPN, and that the acidic and neutral conditions showed more favorable effect on Cr(VI) removal than the alkaline ones. The generated ferrous ions on the surface of BPPN were certified to play an important role in removal of Cr(VI). XPS analysis suggested that the reduction reaction of Cr(VI) occurred on the surface of the composite and produced precipitation of Cr(III). The Cr(VI) removal by BPPN composite was found to follow a revised kinetics well. This study suggests that the novel BPPN composite possessing excellent performance may be a promising functional material of heavy metal wastewater treatment.

Cellulose is a widely used hydrophilic material due to its rich hydrophilic hydroxyl groups. However, the presence of its lipophilic segment will affect the antifouling performance. Finding strategies to improve this problem has attracted considerable attention. In this work, a layer of silica was applied to a cellulose-deposited polyvinylidene fluoride membrane through a straightforward in-situ bionic silicification process of tetraethyl orthosilicate. The contact angle and oil droplet contact test proved that the high-hydrophilicity and underwater superoleophobicity of the silicified membranes were significantly enhanced. The surface structure and composition were analyzed by scanning electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The results of show that this improvement was mainly attributed to the presence of silicon hydroxyl groups, buried cellulose chains, and micro-nanostructures composed of cellulose and silica. The stable silica coating also provided protection for the polymeric membrane against degradation after water washing for 24 h, ultrasonic treatment (40 KHZ) for 10 min or exposure to different pH levels (pH=1, 4, 9 and 12) and saturated sodium chloride solution for 24 h. Furthermore, the silicified membrane showed outstanding oil adhesion resistance and permeation flux, enabling effective purification of different oil-in-water emulsions that were stabilized by emulsifiers. Notably, the membrane achieved a high oil removal rate (> 99.4 %) of various emulsions (toluene-in-water, cyclohexane-in-water, tetrachloroethane-in-water, soybean oil-in-water, toluene-in-salt solution, toluene-in-acid solution and toluene-in-alkaline solution emulsions). In particular, for toluene-in-water emulsions (oil droplets in the emulsion ranged from 58.77 nm to 615.1 nm), a significantly enhanced permeation flux (4777 L·m −2 ·h −1 ·bar −1 ) was obtained at 0.8 bar pressure. Even after multiple cycles of separation, the flux was higher than that of the unsilicified membrane. Overall, this approach is mild, simple, efficient, and easily scalable, making it an ideal method for producing superhydrophilic coatings with substantial application potential.

Polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) porous membranes with superwetting amphophilic surfaces were prepared by in situ cross-linking polymerization of varied triethoxyvinylsilane (VTES) and N-vinyl-2-pyrrolidone (VP) composition ratios during none-solvent induced phase separation (NIPS) processes, utilizing template stripping method. The extreme powers of surface roughness , in amplifying the finite differences in chemical composition of initial dope solution to the properties of the resulted membranes, were revealed by comparing the structures and surface properties of these membranes with super rough surfaces, to their analogues with medium-rough surfaces and films with smooth surfaces. “Butterfly Effect” was observed on the water/oil separation capability of the formed PVDF membranes from the finite variation on the initial chemical composition caused by the change of VTES/VP molar ratio in the dope solution from 0 to 0.33, 0.38, 0.43, 0.48 and 0.53. Huge variations in the oil and water fluxes and removal efficiencies in separating water-in-oil and oil-in-water emulsions of the formed membranes from the “Butterfly Effect” were studied relating to their differences in water-in-air contact angles, oil-in-air contact angles, oil-in-water contact angles and water-in-oil contact angles as well as pore sizes and surface roughness.

This study describes the fabrication and properties of poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) filtration membranes modified by blending with ionic liquid block copolymer P(MMA- b -MEBIm-Br), which is synthesized via reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer polymerization method. The attenuated total reflectance-Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron analyses reveal that the ionic liquid block copolymers are immobilized on PVDF membrane surface. The modified PVDF membrane exhibits excellent charged and antifouling properties because of the charged and hydrophilic properties of the copolymer. Scanning electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy also indicate the morphological characteristics of the membrane and demonstrate that the surface porous structure becomes denser after adding the copolymer. The data of filtration and the zeta potential of the membranes suggest that the charged properties of the ionic liquid block copolymers are mainly responsible for the improvement of the reversible fouling ratio and the decrease in the total fouling ratio of the membranes. © 2017 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. In this study, polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF)/styryl maleic anhydride (SMA) hollow fiber membrane was fabricated using the Thermally Induced Phase Separation (TIPS) technique. Subsequently, zwitterion-sulfobetaine methacrylate (SBMA) was introduced to the membrane surface through a Michael addition reaction to create a nearly electrically neutral membrane surface. This modification effectively mitigated the high adsorption of differently charged protein pollutants on the membrane surface, thereby enhancing its anti-fouling performance. Simultaneously, the membrane surfaces with positive and negative charges were separately constructed, and the impact of membrane surface charge properties on the anti-fouling performance against positively and negatively charged foulants was investigated. Furthermore, detailed studies were conducted on the chemical structure, surface morphology, performance, and anti-fouling mechanism of the modified membranes. The results indicate that the electrically neutral membrane modified by zwitterionic SBMA exhibited excellent anti-fouling properties against both bovine serum albumin (BSA) and lysozyme (LYZ), with a flux recovery rate (FRR) reaching 96.5 % and 94.6 %, respectively. The static adsorption capacities of BSA and LYZ on the membrane surface decreased to 5.89 μg cm −2 and 9.53 μg cm −2 , respectively. Furthermore, the study investigated the structure of the hydration layer formed by zwitterionic SBMA on the membrane surface, as well as its hydration capacity and anti-fouling mechanism. Subsequently, through an assessment of the long-term stability of the modified membrane and its flux recovery rate (FRR), in conjunction with theories related to hydration layers and thermodynamics, it elucidated the anti-fouling mechanism involving “autonomy-response” synergistic enhancement of zwitterions. These findings will offer new strategies for researching hollow fiber membranes with superior anti-fouling properties and for applying zwitterions in membrane technology.

High-efficiency polyamide nanofiltration membranes were recognized as crucial for alleviating freshwater scarcity. However, the rapid reaction rate between piperazine (PIP) and trimesoyl chloride (TMC) resulted in low membrane flux and suboptimal separation efficiency, which limited the application and development of membrane technology. Herein, a novel MOF-303@GO nanomaterials were prepared by in-situ growth method, which were anchored in the framework of the substrate membrane through a phase separation method to regulate the speed of interfacial polymerization reaction to improve the performance of composite nanofiltration membranes. The MOF-303@GO was found to exhibit an adsorption effect on PIP monomers for the accumulation of the PIP molecules around the MOF-303@GO in the membrane pore, which effectively slowed transfer rate of PIP. This process resulted in a thin PA layer and rough surface, which alleviated the resistance to water molecule transport during the membrane separation process. The adsorption mechanism between MOF-303@GO and PIP was profoundly demonstrated by density-functional theory calculations. Besides, the fabricated membrane demonstrated a good water permeability of 14.53 L·m −2 ·h −1 ·bar −1 , along as well as a high Na 2 SO 4 rejection of 96.56 %. This research provided a novel material to regulate the diffusion state of PIP molecules and introduced a key strategy for uniformly blending to modify the substrate membrane, offering a potential solution to the issue of excessively rapid IP reaction rates.

The inherent hydrophobicity of poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) ultrafiltration membranes leads to severe membrane fouling when processing proteinaceous solutions and organic contaminants, significantly limiting their practical applications. This study presents a novel metal-ion mediated co-deposition strategy for fabricating high-performance antifouling poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) hollow fiber ultrafiltration membranes. Through Zn2+coordination-driven self-assembly, a uniform and stable composite coating of dopamine (DA), tannic acid (TA), and ZIF-8 nanoparticles was successfully constructed on the membrane surface under mild conditions. The modified membrane exhibited significantly enhanced hydrophilicity, with a water contact angle of 21° and zeta potential of −29.68 mV, facilitating the formation of a dense hydration layer that effectively prevented protein adhesion. The membrane demonstrated exceptional separation performance, achieving a pure water permeability of 771 L/(m2∙h∙bar) and bovine serum albumin (BSA) rejection of 97.7%. Furthermore, it showed outstanding antifouling capability with flux recovery rates exceeding 83.6%, 74.7%, and 71.5% after fouling by BSA, lysozyme, and ovalbumin, respectively. xDLVO analysis revealed substantially increased interfacial free energy and stronger repulsive interactions between the modified surface and protein foulants. The antifouling mechanism was attributed to the synergistic effects of hydration layer formation, optimized pore structure, additional water transport pathways from ZIF-8 incorporation, and electrostatic repulsion from negatively charged surface groups. This work provides valuable insights into the rational design of high-performance antifouling membranes for sustainable water treatment and protein separation applications.

To optimize the proton transport performance of polyvinylidene fluoride (PVdF), a proton exchange membrane (PEM) material, carbon nanotube (CNT), and zirconium hydrogen phosphate (ZrP) have been blended into the PVdF matrix. Adopting a hydrothermal synthesis route, the acidic ZrP can be better conjugated with the positively charged CNT functionalized by cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB). As visualized using electroscopes, ZrP nanocrystallines are intimately dotted and homogeneously distributed on CNT. The ZrP–PVdF interaction can be attributed to hydrogen bonding between hydroxyl and F-terminal groups. By incorporating well CNT/ZrP into PVdF via solution casting, the pore architecture can be regulated; namely, the macro-voids in PVdF are greatly reduced. The composite membranes exhibit tensile stress of 48–52 MPa while sustaining the thermal stability of PVdF. The incorporated CNT/ZrP can suppress void porosity and enhance film hydrophilicity. With improved wettability, the methanol permeability can be reduced to less than 2 × 10 −9 cm 2 ∙s −1 , ca. one-sixth that of pure PVdF. The proton conductivity for PVdF-CNT 0.03 -ZrP 0.06 , with CNT and ZrP mass content respectively 3 and 6 wt% that of PVdF, attains 0.089 S·cm −1 at 100°C, showing upgraded conducting capability. The membrane selectivity can be remarkably enhanced, verifying that CNT/ZrP blending is a facile and profitable approach for PEM optimization.

In this study, the 3-Aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APTES) was first grafted onto TiO 2 nanoparticles (APTES-TiO 2 nanoparticles), which were then introduced the membrane surface by reacting with anhydride on the membrane surface and Schiff base reaction with the PEI-TA. There are two types of hollow fiber hybrid membranes with varying nanoparticle distributions were constructed. The influence of hybrid mode on the ability of anti-oil fouling was researched. The results indicated that the PVDF@TiO 2 hybrid membrane has a flux recovery rate of 96.68 % and a total flux decline rate of 15.52 %, indicating a good anti-emulsified oil fouling performance. By characterizing the anti-oil droplets adhesion, water-binding capacity, surface charge of membrane and concentrate system coacervate size, the coalescence ability of the hybrid membrane to the oil droplets and the spreading behavior of oil droplets on the surface were uncovered. Ultimately, the anti-fouling mechanism “hydration layer &rigid layer obstruction-electrostatic coalescence” was proposed, which can reasonably explain the weakness of the interplay between the membrane surface and oil droplets, thus slowing down the attaching and spreading of emulsified oil droplets. This study laid the foundation for developing hybrid membranes with high resistance to emulsified oil fouling ability. The proposed anti-fouling mechanism can provide new ideas for the efficient purification of oily wastewater.
