The rapid proliferation of tumors is highly dependent on the nutrition supply of blood vessels. Cutting off the nutrient supply to tumors is an effective strategy for cancer treatment, known as starvation therapy. Although various hydrogel-based biomaterials have been developed for starvation therapy through glucose consumption or intravascular embolization, the limitations of single-mode starvation therapy hinder their therapeutic effects. Herein, we propose a dual-function nutrition deprivation strategy that can block the nutrients delivery through extravascular gelation shrinkage and inhibit neovascularization through angiogenesis inhibitors based on a novel NIR-responsive nanocomposite hydrogel. CuS nanodots-modified MgAl-LDH nanosheets loaded with angiogenesis inhibitor (sorafenib, SOR) are incorporated into the poly(n-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAAm) hydrogel by radical polymerization to obtain the composite hydrogel (SOR@LDH-CuS/P). The SOR@LDH-CuS/P hydrogel can deliver hydrophobic SOR with a NIR-responsive release behavior, which could decrease the tumor vascular density and accelerate cancer cells apoptosis. Moreover, the SOR@LDH-CuS/P hydrogel exhibits higher (3.5 times) compressive strength than that of the PNIPAAm, which could squeeze blood vessels through extravascular gelation shrinkage. In vitro and in vivo assays demonstrate that the interruption of nutrient supply by gelation shrinkage and the prevention of angiogenesis by SOR is a promising strategy to inhibit tumor growth for multimode starvation therapy.

Advanced hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) presents a strongly immunosuppressive tumor microenvironment, which enables tumor cells to evade immune cell attacks and hinder effective drug killing, thereby hindering the achievement of the desired therapeutic effect. In response, a novel nanoplatform- AuHNR@γ-Fe 2 O 3 @Lenvatinib@β-Glucan (AFLG) with surface modified β-1,3-glucan is developed, which exhibits potent immunostimulatory effect and the capability of repolarizing macrophages, to counteract the immunosuppressive conditions present in the tumor microenvironment. Leveraging the hollow structure of gold nanorods, Lenvatinib is efficiently loaded, a first-line targeted drug for HCC, which effectively inhibits tumor angiogenesis. Additionally, through atomic layer deposition, γ-Fe 2 O 3 is generated on the hollow gold nanorod surface, endowing it with chemodynamic therapy and magnetic resonance T 2 -weighted imaging capabilities while excellently maintaining the gold nanorod's superior photothermal therapy and photoacoustic imaging properties under 1064 nm excitation. These AFLG NPs feature dual-modal imaging and quadruple-modal synergistic therapy capabilities, along with their powerful potential in remodeling the immunosuppressive tumor microenvironment, offering an encouraging novel approach for the treatment of hepatocellular carcinoma.

Near-infrared II (NIR-II, 1000–1700 nm) luminescent materials are essential for NIR spectroscopy applications, including biometrics, night vision imaging, and chemical composition analysis. However, achieving thermally stable and ultra-broadband emission under ultraviolet-to-visible (UV–Vis) excitation remains a significant challenge. In this work, a high-efficiency NIR-II phosphor was reported by codoping Cr³⁺ and Ni²⁺ ions into the LiGaSiO₄ lattice, where Cr³⁺ serves as a sensitizer and Ni²⁺ acts as the primary emitter. Owing to the strong absorption of Cr³⁺ in the violet region and its efficient energy transfer to Ni²⁺, the LiGaSiO₄:Cr³⁺/Ni²⁺ phosphor exhibits intense NIR-II emission under 419 nm excitation, with a peak centered at 1250 nm and a full width at half maximum (FWHM) of 227 nm. The material also demonstrates excellent thermal stability, retaining 73.3 % of its luminescence intensity at 393 K. Using a commercial 405 nm LED as the excitation source and a custom-engineered NIR-II spectroscopic detection platform, this phosphor enables functional group-specific differentiation of organic solvents and facilitates quantitative analysis of ethanol–water and NaCl–water binary systems across a broad concentration range. These findings highlight the potential of LiGaSiO₄:Cr 3+ /Ni 2+ as a robust NIR-II probe for next-generation portable sensing technologies, paving the way for the practical deployment of NIR-II photonics systems in industrial and biomedical applications.

Under excitation at 980 nm, Tm3+ may emit ultraviolet, blue, and red light, and Ho3+ may emit green light through multiphoton upconversion processes in Yb/Tm/Ho codoped materials. However, because the probability of the electron population of the higher excited state energy levels is much lower than that of the lower ones in multiphoton upconversion processes, it is difficult to observe the ultraviolet emission of Tm3+-doped single crystals under excitation at 980 nm. Here, we report that high-quality single crystals of cubic ZrO2 codoped with Tm2O3, Ho2O3, and Yb2O3 are successfully grown by the optical floating zone method, and ultraviolet emission at 308 nm was observed for the first time from multiphoton upconversion transitions in these highly transparent, low phonon energy single crystals under excitation at 980 nm. This result demonstrates the prospect of making ultraviolet solid-state lasers pumped by near-infrared light. Moreover, bright white light was emitted from the single crystal prepared with 5.00 mol % Yb2O3, 0.75 mol % Tm2O3, 0.0075 mol % Ho2O3, 2.2425 mol % Y2O3, and 92.00 mol % ZrO2 under excitation at 980 nm, and a bright solid white light source excited by a near-infrared light-emitting diode for practical use is presented.

The construction of perovskite-based luminescent systems for multifunctional integrated platforms via reciprocal energy transfer (ET) cascades emerges as a central focus, but the material design and photophysical control remain a significant challenge. Herein, a strong power-dependent quantum yield behavior is observed in Cs 2 NaInCl 6 : Ho 3+ -Yb 3+ (CNIC: Ho-Yb) phosphors with ultra-low phonon energy, and quantified multiphoton upconversion (UC) efficiencies exhibit ultra-linear enhancement with the increasing excitation power, ensuring practical applicability for UC-based temperature sensing. Moreover, an efficient quantum cutting process is unveiled in the CNIC: Ho-Yb, where a single high-energy photon of Ho 3+ is converted into multiple NIR emissions of Yb 3+ via energy redistribution under 453 nm laser excitation, offering significant potential for enhancing near-infrared (NIR) imaging capability in biological tissues. To address the inherent structural and functional limitations of powder-based materials, the CNIC: Ho-Yb/polyacrylonitrile (CNIC: Ho-Yb/PAN) nanofibers are synthesized by electrospinning, and the functional integration platform based on the efficient bidirectional ET is built by coupling 453 and 980 nm lasers to enable selective applications in flexible thermal monitoring and NIR bioimaging. These findings enable next-generation flexible thermometry platforms with higher sensitivity, signal fidelity, and device-level applicability, while also paving the way for non-invasive and high-contrast deep-tissue imaging in biomedical diagnostics.

The light harvesting property of organic photocatalysts relays on the conjugated framework and its circumjacent chemical circumstances. Herein, a step-by-step modified method is practiced to graft abundant hydroxy group on pyridine doping carbon nitride (PyCNS-x), which synchronously regulates the π-π* and n-π* transitions for wide-spectrum responsive. Beforehand, the pyridine is doped into the conjugated framework for the modification of conjugated structure. More operable carbon sites are formed, which are favorable in thermodynamics for the graft of hydroxy group. The high-temperature redox process not only induces the graft of abundant hydroxy group on pyridine doping carbon nitride. But also, an ultrathin nanosheet is formed for the acquisition of large specific surface area. Related measurements manifest that the sheet thickness of PyCNS-80 is 4 nm. Spectral tests confirm that the light response range of PyCNS-80 is up to near-infrared region. Moreover, there is a strong n-π* transition occurrence in PyCNS-80 that further enhances the light absorption from 500 nm to 750 nm. Finally, the hydrogen evolution activity of PyCNS-80 is up to 1887.7 μmol g −1 h −1 and exhibits a detectable number of 9.0 μmol g −1 h −1 under infrared light. Briefly, this work demonstrates a reference to deeply optimize the electron transition behaviors of organic photocatalyst by designing their chemical structure.

Early diagnosis and treatment of cancer are key problems for effective cancer therapy. Therefore, the development of multifunctional materials that can integrate imaging and therapeutic functions is of great importance. Lanthanide-doped nanoparticles@metal-organic frameworks (Ln-NPs@MOFs) offer an unprecedented opportunity to address this challenge, by combining the imaging capabilities of rare earth-doped nanoparticles with the photosensitizing properties of MOFs for photodynamic therapy (PDT). Here, we report a near-infrared (NIR) light-responsive nanoparticle based on a zirconium-porphyrin metal-organic framework (PCN-224) for synergistic photothermal and photodynamic therapy. Tetra(4-carboxyphenyl)porphyrin (TCPP) that constitutes the MOF framework serves as a natural photosensitizer, enabling efficient photodynamic therapy through Förster resonance energy transfer (FRET). The dye indocyanine green (ICG) was loaded into the MOF pores to sensitize the Ln nanoparticles, enhancing the upconversion fluorescence by 41 times and the downconversion fluorescence by 5 times, which is beneficial to the biological efficacy for imaging diagnosis. Meanwhile, ICG, a traditional photothermal agent, also imparts photothermal therapy capabilities to the system. Furthermore, the encapsulation of cancer cell membranes not only enhances biocompatibility but also improves the material's targeting towards cancer cells, thereby greatly enhancing the therapeutic effect. This dual-functional material provides a promising platform for the integration of cancer diagnosis and therapy.

Human activities, ranging from medical applications to space exploration, face significant threats from multiband electromagnetic radiation. This challenge is particularly pronounced in the complex radiation environments of space. There is an urgent need for high-efficiency, stable broadband electromagnetic shielding materials to safeguard human health and equipment safety. Herein, a Bi-modified W 18 O 49 /MWCNTs/PAN hybrid nanofiber membrane is successfully prepared by electrospinning and post-treatment. Relying on the synergistic effect of Bi, W 18 O 49 , MWCNTs, and porous structures, excellent broadband radiation protection capability is achieved: (i) Low near-infrared-visible-light (NIR-VIS) transmittance (0.62 %); (ii) Ultraviolet (UV) transmittance of only 0.012 % and UPF value as high as 2000; (iii) Mass attenuation coefficient up to 16.18 cm 2 g −1 and attenuation ratio of 85.74 % (thickness: 4 mm) at 33 keV X-ray energy. Furthermore, porous structure and high specific surface area give the membrane ultralight density (0.36 g cm −3 ), flexibility, and outstanding air permeability (8.5 kg m −2 d −1 ). Even after 2000 bends, it still maintains stable structure and performance. Meanwhile, low thermal conductivity (42.2 mW m −1 K −1 ) and superior temperature resistance (300 °C) enable it to adapt to complex and changing environments. These advantages make the membrane highly promising for radiation protection in medical, industrial, and aerospace applications.

Highly sensitive and specific discrimination of brain tumor margins from the surrounding parenchyma remains a formidable challenge. Limited by the short of photostable probes with deep tissue penetration and high efficiency of crossing the blood-brain-barrier (BBB), the development of fluorescence-guided surgery (FGS) of brain tumors was markedly constrained. Herein, we report the capability of the strong second near-infrared-IIb (NIR IIb, 1500−1700 nm) fluorescence from Er-based lanthanide nanoparticles in imaging-guided surgery of orthotopic glioma. We designed an energy-cascaded Er 3+ -Ce 3+ -A 3+ (A = Yb, Ho, Tm) system and prepared a series of NaErF 4 : [email protected] 4 @NaLuF 4 down-conversion nanoparticles (DCNPs) for optimizing the influence of NaAF 4 interlayer and Ce 3+ dopants. We modified the optimal NaErF 4 :2.5 % [email protected] 4 (0.9 nm)@NaLuF 4 DCNPs with Dye-brush polymer (Dye-BP) to facilitate 4 I 13/2 → 4 I 15/2 transition, which leads to an impressive 675-fold enhancement of 1525 nm fluorescence in aqueous solution under 808 nm excitation due to the excellent energy-cascaded downconversion (ECD), in comparison with that of NaErF 4 nanoparticles. We further modified these highly bright nanoparticles with tumor-targeting angiopep-2 peptide, and efficiently delivered them to the glioma by using the focused ultrasound sonication (FUS) to temporarily open the BBB. We obtained the highest tumor-to-background ratio (TBR = 12.5) ever reported in the targeted NIR IIb fluorescence imaging of small orthotopic glioma (size < 3 mm, depth> 3 mm) through intact skull and scalp, which was drastically improved to ∼150 after cardiac perfusion and craniotomy to ensure the precise resection of tumor. More importantly, the size of glioma measured from the width of fluorescence profile is very close to that from T 2 -weighted MRI images. Our work provides the insights into engineering NIR IIb fluorescence of lanthanide nanoparticles, and demonstrates the great potential of NIR IIb fluorescence imaging-guided surgery of tumor.

Broadband near-infrared (NIR) phosphor-converted light-emitting diodes (pc-LEDs) are considered to be at the forefront of the development of next-generation NIR light sources. However, the performance of NIR pc-LEDs is severely limited due to the narrow band emission, low quantum efficiency, and thermal quenching of NIR-emitting materials. Herein, an efficient and thermally stable broadband NIR LaMgGa11O19:Cr3+,Yb3+ (LMG:Cr3+,Yb3+) phosphor has been successfully designed by [Cr3+–Yb3+] co-doping. The broadband emission phenomenon of LaMgGa11O19:Cr3+ was confirmed to be due to selective lattice occupancy of Cr3+ ions based on the analysis of crystal structures, crystal field calculations, and fluorescence lifetimes. The NIR emission spectra in the range of 1000–1200 nm were enriched by using the highly efficient energy transfer of Cr3+ → Yb3+ ions and the energy transfer mechanism is discussed in detail. The prepared LMG:Cr3+,Yb3+ phosphors exhibit highly efficient ultra-broadband NIR emission from 650 to 1200 nm under 440 nm excitation with high internal and external quantum efficiencies of 94.2%/40.5% and excellent luminescence thermal stability of 89.3%@373 K. A NIR pc-LED prototype was fabricated by combining the optimized phosphor with a commercial 440 nm blue LED chip, providing 84.5 mW NIR output power at a 350 mA driving current. Finally, the potential applications of the phosphor in night vision lighting and non-destructive testing were demonstrated. The results show that this work is expected to provide a new strategy for efficient ultra-broadband NIR phosphor design.

The development of highly efficient near-infrared-II (NIR-II) emission phosphors is crucial for advancing compact light sources and their emerging applications. However, the discovery of target phosphors remains a major challenge. Herein, a high-efficiency apatite phosphor, Ba10(PO4)6F2:Mn5+, peaking at 1171 nm with a full width at half-maximum of 11 nm, is synthesized under an oxygen atmosphere. Benefiting from the crystallographic site confinement and oxygen partial pressure control in stabilizing pentavalent manganese, the phosphor exhibits a record internal quantum efficiency (IQE) of 84.2% and external QE of 56%, alongside good thermal stability. By combining Ba10(PO4)6F2:Mn5+ with a red light-emitting diode (LED) chip, a phosphor-converted compact LED with an NIR-II output power of 40.86 mW at 300 mA and a high photoelectric conversion efficiency of 6.82% is presented, demonstrating applications in nondestructive testing, etc. Furthermore, the different temperature-dependent behaviors of the zero-phonon line emission (1171 nm) and vibrational sidebands (1224/1289 nm) of Mn5+ in Ba10(PO4)6F2:Mn5+ enable the fabrication of a high-efficiency fluorescence intensity ratio optical fiber temperature sensor, exhibiting a maximum relative sensitivity value of 0.518% K–1 at 373 K. This work offers some insights into Mn5+-activated high-efficiency NIR-II emission phosphors and their potential for temperature sensing and compact light source applications.

Radioimmunotherapy (RIT) is an advanced physical therapy used to kill primary cancer cells and inhibit the growth of distant metastatic cancer cells. However, challenges remain because RIT generally has low efficacy and serious side effects, and its effects are difficult to monitor in vivo. This work reports that Au/Ag nanorods (NRs) enhance the effectiveness of RIT against cancer while allowing the therapeutic response to be monitored using activatable photoacoustic (PA) imaging in the second near-infrared region (NIR-II, 1000–1700 nm). The Au/Ag NRs can be etched using high-energy X-ray to release silver ions (Ag + ), which promotes dendritic cell (DC) maturation, enhances T-cell activation and infiltration, and effectively inhibits primary and distant metastatic tumor growth. The survival time of metastatic tumor-bearing mice treated with Au/Ag NR-enhanced RIT is 39 days compared with 23 days in the PBS control group. Furthermore, the surface plasmon absorption intensity at 1040 nm increases fourfold after Ag + are released from the Au/Ag NRs, allowing X-ray activatable NIR-II PA imaging to monitor the RIT response with a high signal-to-background ratio of 24.4. Au/Ag NR-based RIT has minimal side effects and shows great promise for precise cancer RIT.
