Photothermal-Actuated Thermoelectric Therapy by Harnessing Janus-Structured Ag–Ag2S Nanoparticles with Enhanced Antitumor Efficacy

Pengyu Zang,Yaqian Du,Chenghao Yu,Dan Yang,Shili Gai,Lili Feng,Shikai Liu,Piaoping Yang,Jun Lin

The newly developed thermoelectric dynamic therapy (TEDT) may not only solve the problem that photothermal therapy (PTT) is limited by the overexpression of heat shock proteins (HSPs) in tumor cells but also improve the killing effect through a dynamic process. Here, we propose photothermal-driven TEDT based on Ag–Ag2S nanoparticles that integrate Ag2S with Ag+ vacancies (VAg) and Ag in a Janus structure. VAg and Ag optimize the band structure and thermoelectric properties of Ag2S, and additional electrons from the introduction of Ag enhance the PTT effect and facilitates the construction of a significant thermoelectric field for electron–hole migration in the reverse direction, thereby markedly enhancing the TEDT effect. Furthermore, the generated VAg can also serve as a hole trap to suppress electron–hole recombination to promote 1O2 production, which inactivates HSPs to produce positive feedback on PTT, leading to better antitumor efficacy. The combined photothermal–thermoelectric therapeutic properties of Ag–Ag2S were verified from both in vivo and in vitro perspectives using ESR, UV–visible spectroscopy, cellular experiments, simulated tumor models, and other experiments.

Controlled fabrication of Ag@clay nanomaterials for ultrasensitive and rapid surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopic detection

Chao Peng Fu,Ke Jin Li,Jia Yong He,Wei Hua Yu,Chun Hui Zhou

The nanostructure of Ag nanoparticles (NPs) plays a critical role in their surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) activity. Despite many efforts to tune the nanostructure of Ag NPs, it remains a great challenge as Ag NPs tend to agglomerate and their nanostructure is difficult to control. Herein, newly-discovered clay-surfactant-Ag+ materials and interfacial processes were developed and used to prepare uniform spherical Ag@synthetic hectorite (Ag@Hct) nanomaterials for ultrasensitive SERS assay. Sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS), an anionic surfactant, acted as a bridge to conjugate the positively charged edge of Hct NPs and Ag+via electrostatic interaction to form the bridging nanostructure of Hct-SDS-Ag+, which promoted the uniform dispersion of Hct NPs. Following this, Ag+ was reduced to Ag0 by the reductant, and Ag0 grew on the surface of disc-like Hct NPs to form spherical Ag@Hct nanomaterials with an average particle size of ∼24 nm. The prepared Ag@Hct nanomaterials showed an ultrasensitive SERS response to methylene blue (MB) with a detection limit of 10−12 M. The detection limit of MB in sewage was 10−11 M. The prepared Ag@Hct nanomaterials also exhibited great SERS enhancement for malachite green and crystal violet. This work provides a novel and simple approach to prepare Ag@Hct nanomaterials with uniform spheres and adjustable particle size, allowing more sensitive and reproducible detection of MB.

Composites of Fe3O4, Ag, and Au Nanoparticles for Dye Degradation and Selective Detection of Glutathione

Ziyuan Gao,Huijuan Wu,Zhenxi Liu,Lizhi Liu,Ziqing Zeng,Xiaofeng Yang,Huiyong Wang,Juan Du,Baozhan Zheng,Yong Guo

In comparison with the poor stability, high cost, and difficult preparation of conventional natural enzymes, nanozymes have the obvious advantages of excellent stability, high catalytic activity, multifunctionality, and large-scale preparation. Herein, a series of Fe3O4 NPs-based magnetic composite with dual enzyme-like activities (peroxidase and oxidase) were successfully synthesized by the microwave-assisted method. Among them, the Fe3O4/Ag Au nanocomposite showed the highest peroxidase-like activity due to the synergistic catalytic effect of Ag and Au bimetallic modifications. Enzyme kinetic studies revealed good kinetic parameters of the Fe3O4/Ag Au nanocomposite for peroxidase, and it also exhibited a higher affinity for TMB compared to natural horseradish peroxidase. In addition, a method for effective dye degradation and selective detection of glutathione was constructed based on its peroxidase-like activity. Importantly, the remarkable magnetic separation property and the outstanding stability proved the extensive application prospects of the nanozymes in the remediation of water pollution and some biomarker-specific detection.

3D hybrid arrayed Ag/MOF multi-plasmon resonant cavity system for high-performance SPR sensing

Yaru Li,Weihao Liu,Runcheng Liu,Jinjuan Gao,Jingwen Feng,Shicai Xu,Zhen Li,Shouzhen Jiang,Xuejian Du

The development of portable biosensors exhibiting outstanding performance for fast and convenient detection of human glucose levels takes on critical significance to human health testing. A two-dimensional metal-organic framework (Cu-TCPP 2D MOF)-sensitized arrayed resonant cavity silver film (ARC/Ag) optical fiber surface plasmon resonance (SPR) sensor was developed in this study. The ARC/Ag 3D structure overcame weak coupling and non-uniform plasmon resonance, and the resulting strong hotspots effectively extended the sensing region. Moreover, the coated MOF is considered as a prominent SPR sensitized layer for its plasmonic property and highly ordered structure. The results of the simulations confirmed the local electric field enhancement that was attributed to the plasmonic synergistic effect of MOF with ARC/Ag. The normalized transmission spectra were collected in ethanol solutions with the refractive index (RI) of 1.340 to 1.352, and the sensitivity and the figure of merit (FOM) of the sensor were demonstrated to be increased by 73.98% and 68%, respectively. The sensor exhibited a linear response factor of 9.99 nm/(mg/mL) over a glucose concentration range of 0.1–1.2 mg/mL by covalently immobilizing glucose oxidase (GOD) on MOF. Accordingly, the proposed highly integrated and portable biosensor provides a piece of promising evidence for label-free glucose detection at point of care (POC).

Oxygen vacancy-rich Ag/CuO nanoarray mesh fabricated by laser ablation for efficient bacterial inactivation

Guoli Liu,Zhixin Hu,Xiaoping Chen,Weihao Li,Yan Wu,Zuocheng Liu,Lei Miao,Zhu Luo,Jinlong Wang,Yanbing Guo

The contamination of drinking water by microbes is a critical health concern, underscoring the need for safe, reliable, and efficient methods to treat pathogenic microorganisms . While most sterilization materials are available in powder form, this presents safety risks and challenges in recycling. Herein, this study reports the preparation of an innovative copper oxide supported silver monolithic nanoarray mesh with abundant oxygen vacancies (Ag/CuO-V O ) by laser ablation . The instantaneous high temperature caused by laser ablation preserves the material's original structure while generating oxygen vacancies on the CuO surface. The Ag/CuO-V O mesh demonstrated a remarkable ability to inactivate over 99% of Escherichia coli ( E. Coli ) within 20 min. The oxygen vacancies in the Ag/CuO-V O enhance interactions between oxygen species and the Ag/CuO-V O , leading to the accumulation of large amounts of reactive oxygen species (ROS). The generated ROS effectively disrupt both layers of the bacterial cell wall - the peptidoglycan and the phospholipid - as confirmed by Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, culminating in cell death. This research presents a monolithic material capable of inactivating pathogenic microorganisms efficiently, offering a significant advancement in water sterilization technology .

Facile synthesis of Ag@Ag2O–BiVO4 plasmonic p–n heterojunction photocatalyst for photodegradation of tetracycline

Nazir Ahsan,Huo Pengwei,Jagirani Muhammad Saqaf,Akram Muhammad Yasir,Wang Huijie

In this study, a plasmonic p–n heterojunction Ag@Ag 2 O–BiVO 4 photocatalyst was successfully prepared by a simple chemical precipitation-reduction process. The obtained samples were tested by various measurements and the photocatalytic behavior in the decomposition of tetracycline (TC) under irradiation with visible light was studied. The photodegradation study exhibits that Ag@Ag 2 O–BiVO 4 has the optimum activity and can efficiently degrade 83.52% of TC in 60 min by irradiation with visible light. Furthermore, the Ag@Ag 2 O–BiVO 4 exhibited more pronounced visible light absorption and the best performances than the BiVO 4 and Ag 2 O–BiVO 4 , which was mainly due to the LSPR of plasmonic Ag. The experimental radical trapping proved that the active species of the photocatalytic process act in the following order: ·O 2 − > h + > · OH. To find intermediates, the possible TC degradation pathways via HPLC–MS were also investigated. This research provides a successful method to develop a plasmonic photocatalyst with p–n heterojunction for wastewater treatment.

Au- or Ag-Decorated ZnO-Rod/rGO Nanocomposite with Enhanced Room-Temperature NO2-Sensing Performance

Ke Huang,Junfeng Lu,Donglin Li,Xianjia Chen,Dingfeng Jin,Hongxiao Jin

To improve the gas sensitivity of reduced oxide graphene (rGO)-based NO2room-temperature sensors, different contents (0–3 wt%) of rGO, ZnO rods, and noble metal nanoparticles (Au or Ag NPs) were synthesized to construct ternary hybrids that combine the advantages of each component. The prepared ZnO rods had a diameter of around 200 nm and a length of about 2 μm. Au or Ag NPs with diameters of 20–30 nm were loaded on the ZnO-rod/rGO hybrid. It was found that rGO simply connects the monodispersed ZnO rods and does not change the morphology of ZnO rods. In addition, the rod-like ZnO prevents rGO stacking and makes nanocomposite-based ZnO/rGO achieve a porous structure, which facilitates the diffusion of gas molecules. The sensors’ gas-sensing properties for NO2were evaluated. The results reveal that Ag@ZnO rods-2% rGO and Au@ZnO rods-2% rGO perform better in low concentrations of NO2gas, with greater response and shorter recovery time at the ambient temperature. The response and recovery times with 15 ppm NO2were 132 s, 139 s and 108 s, 120 s, and the sensitivity values were 2.26 and 2.87, respectively. The synergistic impact of ZnO and Au (Ag) doping was proposed to explain the improved gas sensing. The p-n junction formed on the ZnO and rGO interface and the catalytic effects of Au (Ag) NPs are the main reasons for the enhanced sensitivity of Au (Ag)@ZnO rods-2% rGO.Keywords:Au nanoparticles;Ag nanoparticles;rGO;ZnO rods;p-n junction;synergistic effect

Friction spun spandex/rGO/Ag/polyester core-sheath yarn with antibacterial activity for wearable sensors

Lu Dou,Man Yuan,Daiqi Li,Sizhuo Zou,Sirui Tan,Zhong Zhao,Guangming Cai

Wearable sensors, which feature textile substrates integrated with conductive layers, have received increasing attention from researchers due to their huge potential in health management. However, the inevitable damage of conductive layer caused by friction and bacterial growth on the textile substrate during its direct contact with bare skin are still the issues that hinder the long-term service of wearable sensors. Herein, a core-sheath yarn was prepared by wrapping polyester (PET) fibers coated with reduced graphene oxide (rGO)/silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) around the spandex filaments via friction spinning. The core-sheath structure guarantees good prevention of the interface composed of rGO and Ag NPs in between from friction, while the introduction of Ag NPs ensures antibacterial activity of the yarn. The morphology and chemical composition of the nanomaterials deposited on the surface of PET fibers was investigated to reveal the sensing mechanism of the yarn. Meanwhile, its sensing performance was comprehensively evaluated from the perspectives of sensitivity, durability and comparison of commercial ECG. Despite the fact that inevitable damage of the rGO/Ag layer occurred during the friction spinning process, the core-sheath yarn still featured a gauge factor of 8.11 and a threshold of sensing range up to 68.57 %. Apart from being able to detect respiratory signals, cardio signals with the frequency of 70 beat per min (bpm) was also recorded. Compared to signals with the frequency of 73 bpm recorded by a commercial ECG sensor simultaneously, the core-sheath yarn exhibited satisfying precision. Moreover, the existence of Ag NPs in the conductive interface endowed the yarn with ability to yield 13-mm and 15-mm wide growth inhibition zones of E. coli and S. aureus , respectively. The cardiorespiratory sensing ability coupled with antibacterial activity of the yarn suggested its satisfying sensitivity and prolonged service time, making it a promising wearable sensor subjected to direct skin contact for long-time cardiorespiratory monitoring.

High-Performance Au@Ag Nanorods Substrate for SERS Detection of Malachite Green in Aquatic Products

Xiaoxiao Zhou,Shouhui Chen,Yi Pan,Yuanfeng Wang,Naifeng Xu,Yanwen Xue,Xinlin Wei,Ying Lu

In order to improve the detection performance of surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS), a low-cost Au@Ag nanorods (Au@Ag NRs) substrate with a good SERS enhancement effect was developed and applied to the detection of malachite green (MG) in aquaculture water and crayfish. By comparing the SERS signal enhancement effect of five kinds of Au@Ag NRs substrates with different silver layer thickness on 4-mercaptobenzoic acid (4-MBA) solution, it was found that the substrate prepared with 100 µL AgNO3had the smallest aspect ratio (3.27) and the thickest Ag layer (4.1 nm). However, it showed a good signal enhancement effect, and achieved a detection of 4-MBA as low as 1 × 10−11M, which was 8.7 times higher than that of the AuNRs substrate. In addition, the Au@Ag NRs substrate developed in this study was used for SRES detection of MG in crayfish; its detection limit was 1.58 × 10−9M. The developed Au@Ag NRs sensor had the advantages of stable SERS signal, uniform size and low cost, which provided a new tool for SERS signal enhancement and highly sensitive SERS detection method development.Keywords:Au@Ag nanorods substrate;surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS);malachite green

Ultra-clean ternary Au/Ag/AgCl nanoclusters favoring cryogenic temperature-boosted broadband SERS ultrasensitive detection

Linlin Xu,Ming Chen,Qingqiang Cui,Chang Wang,Mnegya Zhang,Linqi Zheng,Shuang Li,Hua Zhang,Guangda Liang

Exploring multifunctional surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) substrates with high sensitivity, broadband response property and reliable practicability should be required for ultrasensitive molecular detection in complex environments, which is heavily dependent on the photo-induced charge transfer (PICT) efficiency realized on the desirable nano-architectures. Herein, we introduce ultra-clean ternary Au/Ag/AgCl nanoclusters (NCs) with broadband resonance crossing the visible light to near-infrared region created by one step laser irradiation of mixed metal ion solution. Interestingly, the surface defects and interaction among these unique cluster-like ternary nanostructures would be further enhanced by thermal annealing treatment at 300°C, providing higher broadband SERS activities than the reference ternary nanoparticles under 457, 532, 633, 785, and 1064 nm wavelengths excitation. More importantly, the further promoted SERS activities of the resultant Au/Ag/AgCl NCs with achievable ∼5-fold enhancement than the initial one can be conventionally realized by simplistically declining the temperature from normal 20°C to cryogenic condition at about -196°C, due to the lower temperature-suppressed non-radiative recombination of lattice thermal phonons and photogenerated electrons. The cryogenic temperature-boosted SERS of the resultant Au/Ag/AgCl NCs enables the limit of detection (LOD) of folic acid (FA) biomolecules to be achieved as low as 10−12 M, which is obviously better than that of 10−9 M at room temperature condition. Overall, the smart Au/Ag/AgCl NCs-based broadband SERS sensor provides a new avenue for ultrasensitive biomolecular monitoring at cryogenic condition.

A plasmonic MOFs/Ag nanostructure for in-situ SERS monitoring of plasmon-mediated chemical reactions

Wen Zhang,Ziqian Shi,Niu Pan,Pengfei Wu,Xiaoyang Fan,Chao Qu,Hongyan Xi,Tingting You,Yukun Gao,Penggang Yin

Plasmon-mediated chemical reactions (PMCRs) are considered as promising methods for promoting photo-driven chemical reactions by using solar energy. In this work, metal–organic frameworks (MOFs; HKUST-1) /Ag NPs substrate was feasibly prepared by electrodeposition method and electrostatic adsorption, and it was applied for in-situ monitoring of PMCRs from 4-nitrobenzenethiol (4-NBT) to 4, 4′-dimercaptoazobenzene (DMAB). By conducting in-situ surface enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS), the HKUST-1/Ag NPs substrate was proved performing efficient localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) effect. Surprisingly, higher efficiency of plasmon catalytic reaction was observed comparing with traditional Ag substrate, which was benefited from the adsorption capacity and stabilization effect of HKUST-1. Thus, the reaction mechanism testified by using the high efficiency HKUST-1/Ag NPs substrate, and a novel route monitoring the plasmon catalytic reaction was further offered.

Au@Ag Nanocube-Coated Polystyrene Microspheres as Hierarchical SERS Substrates for Trace Detection of As5+

Haoyu Guan,Guoqiang Fang,Xinxin Li,Haoyu Dong,Siqingaowa Han,Xiang Lin,Li Wang

The plasmon coupling properties of assembled metal nanogap structures are highly sensitive to the distance, shape, orientation, and configuration of faceted nanoparticles. However, the orientation control of nanoparticles is usually limited to in-plane configurations. In this paper, Au@Ag nanocubes (NCs) with sharp edges and corners were assembled on a polystyrene (PS) microsphere array as a hierarchical surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) substrate via a facile self-assembly technique. The Au@Ag NC monolayer undergoes an out-of-plane reconstruction and forms V-shaped nanogaps under the modulation of the PS microsphere array curved surface. This unique V-shaped nanogap can generate electromagnetic fields stronger than those of traditional parallel gaps and make it easier for target molecules to diffuse into the nanogaps. The three-dimensional (3D) SERS substrates have a wider spectral response and 20 times higher SERS activity than those of the Au@Ag NC monolayer films on flat substrates. The high sensitivity was demonstrated by the detection limit down to 10–9 M for 4-MBA with a substrate enhancement factor up to 3.1 × 107. Furthermore, the optimized 3D SERS substrate was applied to determine As5+ in water with detection limits as low as 10–8 M assisted by machine learning, indicating that the 3D SERS substrates have promising applications in food safety, environmental monitoring, and biological diagnosis.
