Polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) continues to attract researchers in the field of membrane separation due to its many outstanding properties. However, fully modifying it into a multifunctional composite membrane with ultra-high stability remains a significant challenge. In this work, a uniform BiOBr-BiOCOOH/PVDF composite membrane was prepared by incorporating catalytic materials into the casting solution through an in-situ deposition method. The effects of different loadings of catalytic materials on the performance of the p-n heterojunction catalyst were investigated. The composite membrane surface was modified by self-assembling tannic acid (TA) and subsequent crosslinking, and its oil-water separation performance and resistance to acidic and alkaline conditions were evaluated. Using dyes, antibiotics, and oily wastewater as representative pollutants, the membrane’s rejection and catalytic capabilities were thoroughly analyzed, achieving average rejection rates of 95%, 86%, and 99%, respectively. The changes in the crystalline phases of PVDF molecules, the physical morphology, and the chemical structure of the composite membranes were thoroughly discussed. Catalytic studies demonstrated that the catalytic materials within the composite membrane possess highly efficient light absorption capabilities, achieving photodegradation rates of over 99% for various pollutants and over 98% for complex wastewater containing mixed dyes. The surface modification via self-assembly endowed the membrane with hydrophilic and oleophobic properties, resulting in high rejection efficiency for oil-in-water emulsions and excellent performance in separating oilfield industrial wastewater, along with strong self-cleaning ability. The study also highlights the composite membrane's adaptability in extremely acidic and alkaline environments, demonstrating its outstanding physicochemical structural stability.

In this work, a novel PCN-222 metal−organic framework based multitasking membrane was developed for separation of emulsified oils as well as photo-Fenton degradation of refractory aromatic pollutants and inactivation of pathogenic bacteria in water. Fe(III)@PCN-222 nanorods were prepared via impregnation method and subjected to amino-modification, and then robustly anchored on polydopamine (PDA) decorated PVDF membrane via catechol-amine reaction. The as-prepared N-Fe(III)@PCN-222/PDA/PVDF composite membrane exhibited underwater superoleophobicity, and showed high separation efficiency (above 99.4 %) as well as relatively favorable permeation flux (874.9–1592.3 Lm −2 h −1 ) in the separation of emulsified oils ranged from nanoscale to microscale from water. Meanwhile, the membrane serving as a recyclable photo-Fenton platform showed an extensive degradation capacity towards aromatic contaminants and high inactivation activity against bacteria under visible light. The grafted Fe(III) is used as an electron acceptor to promote the separation of photo-generated charge carriers, adjusted the band structure to shorten the bandgap value, and can be reduced to Fe(II) by photo-generated electrons as a Fenton-like catalyst. The photo-Fenton mechanism was studied in detail from the aspects of photoelectric properties, band structure and reactive oxygen species . This work could promote the application of PCN subclass MOFs based superwetting membrane as a recyclable platform for complex wastewater treatment .

Currently, the co-immobilization of multi-enzymes on a solid carrier and their applications in cascade catalytic reactions are primarily studied. In this study, a MOF/polymer porous membrane composed of DUT-5 incorporated polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) is constructed and employed in the co-immobilization of porcine pancreatic lipase (PPL) and glucose oxidase (GOx) for the first time. The loading amounts of DUT-5 nanoparticles were varied to optimize the subsequent immobilization efficiency for the two enzymes. The adsorption conditions, isotherms and kinetics for both PPL and GOx were investigated systematically, and the optimum adsorption conditions were determined and used in the co-immobilization of the two enzymes step by step. It is interesting that the maximum adsorption amounts for the two enzymes in the co-immobilization process are similar to the results obtained in the single enzyme immobilization, which indicates the better compatibility of PPL and GOx in the hybrid membranes. The catalytic activities of the co-immobilized enzymes were evaluated using a cascade oxidation reaction, in which H2O2 produced in the GOx-catalyzed oxidation of glucose worked as the oxidant in the subsequent oxidation of styrene. Further, the catalytic efficiency of the co-immobilized enzymes is compared to that of the mixed free PPL and GOx. The improved catalytic rates and better reusability of the co-immobilized enzymes highlight the broader applications of MOF-based membranes in the co-immobilization of two or more enzymes and the catalytic applicabality in the cascade organic reactions.

High-performance flexible piezoelectric polymer–ceramic composites are in high demand for increasing wearable energy-harvesting applications. In this work, a strategy combining solid-state shear milling (S3M) and fused filament fabrication (FFF) 3D-printing technology is proposed for the fabrication of high-performance biomimetic wearable piezoelectric poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF)/tetraphenylphosphonium chloride (TPPC)/barium titanate (BaTiO3) nanocomposite energy harvesters with a biomimetic fish-scale-like metamaterial. The S3M technology could greatly improve the dispersion of BaTiO3 sub-micrometer particles and the interfacial compatibility, resulting in better processability and piezoelectric performance of the nanocomposites. Typically, the FFF 3D printed energy harvester incorporating 30 wt % BaTiO3 showed the highest piezoelectric outputs with an open-circuit voltage of 11.5 V and a short-circuit current of 220 nA. It could hence drive nine green LEDs to work normally. In addition, a 3D-printed biomimetic wearable energy harvester inspired by an environmentally adaptive fish-scale-like metamaterial was further fabricated. The fish-scale-like energy harvester could harvest energy through different deformation motions and successfully recharge a 4.7 μF capacitor by being mounted on a bicycle tire and the tire’s rolling. This work not only provides a 3D printing strategy for designing diversified and complex geometric structures but also paves the way for further applications in flexible, wearable, self-powered electromechanical energy harvesters.

Solar thermal membrane distillation is a promising technology for low-cost desalination and water purification . A novel photo-thermal conversion membrane composited by polyacrylonitrile (PAN) nanofiber layer and polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) with antimony tin oxide (ATO) as solar-thermal nanoparticles (PVDF-ATO/PAN nanofiber membrane) was fabricated by sequent electrospinning techniques. The dual-layer membrane with hydrophilic PAN and hydrophobic PVDF-ATO was examined by microscopic evaluation and contact angle measurement. In situ temperature increase on membrane superficial layer (PVDF-ATO) driven by solar light illumination was confirmed by thermal imaging system. PAN layer provides water transport channels for facilitating water flow of highly efficient membrane distillation and avoids the salting assembly during the vigorous evaporation. With the help of hydrophilic PAN layer, our PVDF-ATO/PAN nanofiber membrane can fulfill highly effective localized heating transfer with an evaporate rate of 0.93 kg m −2 h −1 , showing great potential for low-cost water desalination and scalable water purification.

In this work, SiO 2 @PDA nanoparticles obtained by in - situ coating polydopamine (PDA) on the surface of spherical SiO 2 nanoparticles were adopted to prepare the polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) composite films via thermally-induced phase separation (TIPS) method with diphenyl carbonate (DPC) as the diluent. PDA was proved to cover evenly on the surface of SiO 2 nanoparticles, which was favorable to the dispersion of hydrophilic nanoparticles in the matrix. Effect of the presence of SiO 2 @PDA nanoparticles on crystallization behavior, thermal stability, mechanical properties and hydrophilicity of the composite films was intensively investigated. Heterogeneous nucleating effect on the crystallization of PVDF coupled with elevated crystallinity was found upon the incorporation of SiO 2 @PDA without altering the crystal form of PVDF. The rigidity, tensile strength as well as thermal stability of the composite films containing SiO 2 @PDA were significantly improved in comparison to both neat film and those containing unmodified nanoparticles. In addition, the hydrophilicity of PVDF composite films’ surface was remarkably enhanced with an increasing SiO 2 @PDA content, which helped to reduce the protein adsorption of the composite films considerably. The present study would supply an insight into the fabrication of PVDF composite films with desirable performance and capabilities.

Flexible dielectric capacitors with large energy storage density play key role in modern electronic devices. Ceramic fibers with large dielectric constants are benign candidates to be introduced into the polymer matrix to enhance the energy storage density while guaranteeing the flexibility. In present work, Nd doped BaTiO 3 (NBT) fibers with and without dopamine (PDA) coating were successfully fabricated and introduced into the Poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) matrix. The dielectric constants and breakdown strength were simultaneously enhanced with a small loading of NBT filler. The subtle modulation was then performed around the filler loading at which the large energy density was obtained. With the NBT loading of 2.5 wt% and 4.2 wt%, the maximum energy density of 9.3 and 10.4 J/cm 3 were obtained in PVDF/NBT and PVDF/NBT@PDA composites, respectively. Both of experimental results and simulation indicate the effectiveness of dopamine coating on the uniform distribution of electric field and good comparability between the matrix and fillers.

The reasonable construction of composite membranes with dual functions of rapid adsorption and photo-Fenton-like oxidation degradation holds great significance in the field of wastewater purification. Herein, a poly(vinylidene fluoride)-based composite membrane (denoted as CFT/PVDF) was meticulously prepared through a nonsolvent induced phase separation (NIPS) process with the introduction of cobalt-iron metal–organic framework (CoFe-MOF) and TiO 2 (Degussa P25). The composite membrane exhibited an excellent adsorption ability for removing a variety of organic pollutants from water. With the integration of adsorptive filtration and in situ photo-Fenton-like degradation, the removal efficiency of tetracycline hydrochloride reached up to 92.9% through the CFT/PVDF membrane in one filtration process, and the remarkable performance could be maintained after ten consecutive cycles. Moreover, a group of CFT/PVDF membranes was connected in series to realize the fast and continuous wastewater treatment. The photo-Fenton-like oxidation mechanism and possible degradation pathways were proposed on the basis of active-species detections and degradation intermediates analysis. The toxicological analysis indicated that tetracycline was in situ degraded into less toxic intermediates and even nontoxic substances by the CFT/PVDF composite membrane. This work provides some valuable guidance on the construction of self-cleaning membranes for sustainable wastewater remediation and potential applications.

BACKGROUND Membrane distillation (MD) is considered a viable technology to overcome the issue of water scarcity by desalination of seawater. However, the application of MD has been severely restricted by membrane-wetting phenomena. This study aims to optimize the desired mixed-matrix hollow-fiber (HF) membrane conditions that have anti-wetting characteristics for efficient desalination. Response surface methodology based on central composite design was used to predict and optimize the permeate flux and salt rejection (SR). The combined effects of polymer (polyvinylidene fluoride, PVDF) concentration, nano-fumed silica (NFS) particle loading, coagulation bath temperature (CBT) and air gap distance (AG), as well as their interactions in terms of desalination performance, have been investigated. RESULTS The linear factors (NFS, CBT), the quadratic effects of all variables, as well as the interacting terms between (PVDF, NFS), (PVDF, CBT) and (NFS, CBT) had significant effects for both pure water and permeate fluxes. For SR, only PVDF presented a linear effect, while a quadratic effect was obtained in (NFS, AG) and an interaction effect was obtained between PVDF and NFS. Under optimal conditions of PVDF (15.03 wt%), NFS (1.21 wt%), CBT (54.85 °C) and AG (9.9 cm), the optimal mixed-matrix HF membrane demonstrated higher experimental average values for pure water and permeate fluxes, which reached up to 11.95 and 11.61 kg m −2 h −1 respectively, and an SR of 99.96% as compared to the pristine membrane. CONCLUSION Our research provides an efficient anti-wetting NFS/PVDF mixed-matrix HF membrane, indicating that the optimal membrane possesses high potential for the direct contact membrane distillation (DCMD) process. © 2023 Society of Chemical Industry (SCI).

In the process of removing dye wastewater, the membrane surface is susceptible to contamination, resulting in reduced performance and limited dye separation efficiency. A single hydrophilic modification layer is not enough to achieve effective separation of different types of dyes. The present research designed a "double layer protection" method in order to overcome the above deficiencies. A solution of dopamine (DA) coated carbon nanotubes (CNTs-COOH) was covered on the surface of the polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) membrane by deposition, followed by grafting a layer of chitosan (CS) polymer brushes on its surface. The spatial double layer structure provides an excellent barrier effect and effectively reduces the contamination of dyes. When filtering different types of dyes, effective filtration of anionic and cationic dyes through the electrostatic effect of the first layer, the adsorption of CNTs in the second layer and the hydration layer of both layers. All membranes have excellent rejection properties. More importantly, the membranes also had good chemical and mechanical stability and their serviceability was not degraded. Therefore, the prepared PVDF-based multi-layer composite membranes behave a potential application prospect in the wastewater purification field.

It is a great challenge to fabricate superwetting catalytic membranes with intrinsic self-cleaning capacity for highly stable and effective water purification by simple, mild and energy-efficient manufacturing technologies. Herein, diffusion-induced interfacial self-assembly and polyphenol-mediated strengthening strategies were employed to fabricate tannic acid -mediated layered double hydroxide hybridizing PVDF superwetting catalytic membranes (named as TA@CoFe-LDH@PVDF). The simultaneous phase transformation/in-situ synthesis of CoFe-LDH nanosheets and subsequent coordination assembly with tannic acid (TA) was implemented. Superhydrophilic and underwater-superoleophobic properties were achieved through the cooperation effect of the rough microstructures of CoFe-LDH nanosheets and the strong hydration ability of TA molecules. This enabled efficient separation of various oil-in-water emulsions with more than 99 % separation efficiency and permeation flux up to 593.9 L m -2 h −1 bar −1 in cross-flow filtration. Furthermore, due to the reducibility of TA molecules that promoted the M n +1 /M n + cycle, TA@CoFe-LDH@PVDF membrane exhibited high static degradation efficiency and kinetics (nearly 100 % in 5.0 min) toward methylene blue by PMS activation. The degradation rate constant (1.04 min −1 ) was 2.67 times compared to that of CoFe-LDH@PVDF. Surprisingly, it was found that the dynamic mass transfer process in the membrane significantly accelerated the catalytic kinetics, resulting in a degradation rate in dead-end filtration was 23.89 times higher than that under static conditions. Additionally, it was proved that assembled TA could inhibit and reduce metal ion leaching during the catalytic and separation process. This simple manufacturing process of multifunctional membranes with superior performances offers a high application potential in wastewater treatment.

Efficient separation of single rare earth element such as neodymium (Nd) has become an important research topic due to the supply crisis which seriously restricts the application and promotion of rare earth permanent magnets. PVDF-based separation membranes prepared by non-solvent induced phase separation (NIPS) method usually exhibited hydrophobic surface properties resulting in performance attenuation and operation cost increase. This article applied an easily available NADES from betaine and lactic acid to regulate and control the coagulation bath of a polymer inclusion membrane (PIM) for the separation of Nd, Sm and Dy ions. Evidences for the formation of DES were characterized via 1 H NMR and FT-IR, and betaine showed more obvious changes than lactic acid during the formation of DES via hydrogen bonds . With the help of DES, pores on the surface were much larger and richer, and the migration of P O and P–O groups to the lower epidermal layer of the membrane made the surface layer become more hydrophilic. DES accelerated the liquid-liquid demixing process and led to faster membrane-forming speed and typical finger-like macrovoids and short vertical penetration channels, which could be observed at high DES contents, and a DES content of 5 wt% was found the most optimal considering the overall permeability and separation performances. As an effective means to improve membrane's performances, adding hydrophilic NADESs at a proper ratio in the coagulation bath would be conducive to form more porous structures, higher surface hydrophilicity, optimized permeability and separation performances.
