Deep eutectic solvents (DESs) provide enormous opportunities for manufacturing functional, electronegative metal alloys with hierarchical structures—because of the broad working windows for electrochemical reactions and the advantages of multiscale directing chemistry. This work presents the electrodeposition preparation of a hierarchical-structured Cu–Zr amorphous alloy coating from ChCl–EG DES for the first time. The electrochemical behavior of Cu 2+ and Zr 4+ , and the comprehensive microscopic and structural characterizations of the obtained deposits, demonstrate a potential-dependent nucleation and growth mechanism of Cu and Zr species on the surface of Cu foil. The deposits yielded at the lower negative potentials containing small amounts of Zr (< 4.0 at.%) are two-phase, with fibrous Cu a Zr b O c compounds cross-growing on the surface of the leaf-like face-centered cubic Cu phase. In contrast, the deposit obtained at a higher negative potential presents a Christmas tree-like Cu–Zr amorphous alloy structure (9.03 at.% Zr), and the hierarchical multiscale ZrO 2 amorphous layer formed on its surface can enable the native alloy with better corrosion resistance.

In this work, the heterostructure between Cu particles and ZnFe-LDH semiconductor with lantern shape was constructed by reducing the ternary CuZnFe-LDH using H 2 , and the effects of Cu loading and the formation of heterojunction on photocatalytic CO 2 reduction to CO and CH 4 were investigated. The results showed that the hollow and layer-stacking structure of the catalyst was beneficial to the light utilization, adsorbing and activating of carbon dioxide. The Cu cations could enter into the lattice of ZnFe-LDH to form a ternary CuZnFe-LDH, which could be reduced to Cu particles with smaller size by H 2 and resulting in the heterostructure between Cu and ZnFe-LDH. The loading of Cu particles can significantly enhance the light absorption, photogenerated carriers transfer rate and separation efficiency of ZnFe-LDH, thus improving photocatalytic activity. As expected, Cu 1.6 ZnFe-R catalyst exhibited the highest catalytic activity with CO yield of 45.35 μmol·g cat −1 ·h −1 and CH 4 yield of 39.33 μmol·g cat −1 ·h −1 , which were 2.81 and 6.19 times higher than those of ZnFe-LDH, respectively. Meanwhile, Cu particles acted as electron-rich centers and CO 2 adsorption sites can noticeably improve the CH 4 selectivity and inhibit H 2 production. The Cu 1.6 ZnFe-R catalyst exhibits the highest CH 4 electron-based selectivity of 65.17 %, the highest electrons consumed of 482.80 μmoL·g cat −1 ·h −1 for CO 2 reduction and the lowest H 2 electron-based selectivity of 16.04 %.

For graphene/metal composites, both the synthesis of graphene and the interfacial bonding with the metal matrix are crucial for determining overall performance. In this study, in-situ nitrogen-doped graphene/Cu composites were successfully fabricated using polyacrylonitrile (PAN) as the carbon source, and the effects of PAN-derived graphene on composite microstructure, mechanical properties, and electrical performance were systematically investigated. The results show that an optimal PAN content of 0.25 wt% promotes the formation of high-quality in-situ graphene, which simultaneously strengthens the copper matrix and improves electrical stability. On the mechanical side, the composite showed a yield strength of 408 MPa and a tensile strength of 427 MPa, with increases of 63 % and 42 %, respectively, compared to pure copper. This enhancement is primarily attributed to dislocation strengthening, grain refinement, and load transfer, with graphene reinforcing the composite by restricting dislocation motion, impeding grain growth, and providing the intrinsic high strength of graphene. On the electrical side, the composite maintained a high room-temperature electrical conductivity of 94.2 % IACS while achieving a reduced temperature coefficient of resistance (TCR) of 3.68 × 10 -3 K −1 , which results from the high intrinsic conductivity and negative TCR of graphene. These findings highlight the dual role of PAN-derived graphene in enhancing both the mechanical and electrical properties, offering valuable insights into the development of high-performance graphene/metal composites for industrial applications.

Copper-based catalysts are widely employed in the catalytic conversion of aromatic compounds to phenolic derivatives. However, single-atom copper catalysts often exhibit limited reactivity and stability. In this study, we addressed these limitations by loading Cu onto NaY zeolite via ion exchange to synthesize a CuY catalyst, followed by Yb modification. By optimizing the Yb content, we significantly enhanced the anisole conversion rate and guaiacol yield. Catalyst characterization revealed that Yb species modulate the electronic structure of copper, favoring the formation of abundant Cu+ species. This electronic modification promotes the catalytic generation of hydroxyl radicals (˙OH) from hydrogen peroxide, thereby accelerating the reaction kinetics. Furthermore, Yb incorporation into CuY induced the formation of oxygen vacancies, which improved hydroxyl radical adsorption and facilitated the generation of metal-oxo species. These synergistic effects collectively increased the reaction's overall conversion efficiency. Under optimized reaction conditions, the Yb/CuY catalyst achieved an anisole conversion of 56.2% and an ortho-selectivity of 74.6%, clearly outperforming previous reports.

Highly transparent and large-area scintillator film is highly desirable for next-generation X-ray imaging and detection. Herein, we develop a rapid and in situ synthesis strategy to fabricate polymer scintillator film composed of (C 14 H 15 P) 4 Cu 4 I 4 glassy cluster gel (M1-GCG). The large-area M1-GCG film of 20 × 12 cm was obtained by in situ UV photopolymerization within 30 s, showing ∼90% transmittance in the broad spectral region of 400–1,000 nm, in which Cu(I) iodide clusters coordinated by phosphine ligands are generated as a glassy form in the polymer network structure and uniformly distributed under supramolecular interactions, as the polymer monomer is polymerized and cross-linked under ultraviolet light. We develop a brand-new chemical synthesis route toward polymer-based composite scintillator film, and the M1-GCG film with high transparency and scintillation properties, as well as high-resolution X-ray imaging ability, shows extraordinary potential for large-area medical imaging and industrial non-destructive detection.

There is an urgent need for development of efficient and long-term stable catalytic electrodes for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) via alkaline water electrolysis (AWE) to enable economically competitive hydrogen energy production. In this work, a facile air pyrolysis treatment is used to fabricate RuO2 coatings on a Ti substrate (RuO2/TF), and the surface state of the active coatings during HER was investigated. It was observed that the original RuO2 surface transforms into a partially reduced form composed of mixed valence states (0/+4). Although the newly-formed surface has higher activity than RuO2, the Ru state and current efficiency fluctuate with the electrolysis conditions, and the HER activity will be limited by the final reduced state (i.e., Ru0). To stabilize and improve the active Ru surface, Cu, which experiences a polyvalence change around the HER potential, is doped into the RuO2 coating as an electron buffer. This modification with Cu electron buffers results in an active Ru surface that exhibits stable chemical states with excellent activity, rapid responsivity, and excellent stability under the fluctuating operation conditions of alkali electrolyzers. The AWE system with optimized RCO/TF as cathodes exhibits a lower voltage (2.07 V) and higher current efficiency (95.25%) at a current density of 1 A cm−2 than RuO2/TF (2.40 V, 80.97%). This study unveils the origin of the activity of Ru coatings for HER and proposes an approach to composition design for other multicomponent electrodes and electrochemical applications.

A strategy involving the use the rare-earth compound LaF 3 with good lubrication and stability properties as a filler in the preparation of Cu-based composites was proposed to solve the problem of poor wear resistance in Pb-free Cu-Bi materials. The influence and regulatory mechanism of LaF 3 content on the mechanical and tribological properties of these composites were studied. The results indicate that LaF 3 has a good refining effect on Cu alloy grains, and LaF 3 and Bi are distributed in a network along the grain boundaries of the Cu alloy in the material. As the LaF 3 content increases, the mechanical properties and friction coefficient of the composite gradually decrease, and the wear rate first declines and then increases. The wear resistance of Cu-Bi composite containing LaF 3 mainly depends on the mechanical support provided by the matrix. When the LaF 3 content is higher than 6%, the composite strength is extremely low, and the increase in lubricant content at the friction interface does not play a decisive role in the material wear behaviour. The material wear rate increases with the increase in LaF 3 content. Therefore, using 6% LaF 3 is recommended to improve the wear resistance of the material and maintain a balance among its mechanical properties, antifriction and wear resistance.

Complex operating conditions pose greater challenges for lubricants, making the development of multi-functional additives a trend. This research introduces a multifunctional Cu-Mo-S nanoparticle (CMS) additive, synthesized using a unique one-pot in situ method. The CMS significantly improved the tribological performance and oxidation stability of base oils. Specifically, 0.5 wt% CMS manifested a remarkable reduction in the friction coefficient and wear volume of ester-based oils by 74.75% and 95.91%, accompanied by a noteworthy increase in the extreme pressure capabilities exceeding 50%, outperforming the individual copper nanoparticles, organic molybdenum, and their mixtures. The remarkable results are attributed to the distinctive structure of CMS, which decomposed during the friction process, forming a continuous friction film containing copper, molybdenum, and iron compounds.

Natural enzyme cascades, including the same and different kinds of enzymes, have been widely used in biosensing. However, it is still a challenge for nanozymes, the mimics of natural enzymes, to achieve biosensing with different types of enzyme-like activities based on cascade reactions, such as hydrolase and oxidoreductase. Considering the characteristics of the multienzyme-like activity of some nanozymes, as a proof of concept, this study demonstrates a Cu/Ce-MOF-808 nanozyme as a self-cascade catalyst with hydrolase-like and catechol oxidase-like activities. Taking organophosphorus pesticides as an example, we constructed a self-cascade catalytic reaction for the one-step colorimetric detection of isocarbophos. Specifically, the hydrolase-like activity of Cu/Ce-MOF-808 can hydrolyze isocarbophos to produce colorless isopropyl salicylate, which is further oxidized by the catechol oxidase-like activity of Cu/Ce-MOF-808 and complexed with 4-aminoantipyrine (4-AAP) to produce red quinoneimine under neutral conditions with illumination. Thus, a colorimetric strategy for sensitive isocarbophos analysis is developed, with a linear range of 0.90–400.00 μg·mL–1 and a detection limit of 0.42 μg·mL–1. This research presents a new approach to the design and synthesis of nanozymes and has great application potential in the field of nanozyme cascade biosensing.

The low selectivity for N2 in the oxidation of NH3 over commercial Pt/Al2O3 catalysts is primarily due to the overoxidation of NH3 facilitated by Pt sites, leading to the formation of unwanted byproducts such as N2O and NO. In this study, we present a novel strategy to enhance N2 selectivity while maintaining NH3 conversion by constructing Pt–O–Cu dual sites. These dual sites exhibit synergistic acid-redox characteristics through surface electron transfer mediated by bridged lattice oxygen. Additionally, the ability of surface-adsorbed oxygen to exchange with lattice oxygen is significantly improved. The electron-deficient Cu sites enhance NH3 adsorption by providing empty 3d orbitals, while the electron-rich Pt sites promote NH3 dehydrogenation. Subsequently, the formation of –NH or –N intermediates at the Pt sites can react with adsorbed NH3 on the Cu sites to produce N2, predominantly following the integrated selective catalytic reduction mechanism. The optimized dual-site catalyst achieves over 95% NH3 conversion and N2 selectivity at 180 °C.

γ-Valerolactone (GVL) is a promising bio-based platform molecule with significant potential for energy applications. The production of GVL via biomass-based levulinic acid (LA) is an important reaction. To enhance the conversion and selectivity of non-precious-metal catalysts in the LA-to-GVL process and to better understand the key factors influencing this conversion, we conducted a series of experiments. In this study, supported Cu-Ni bimetallic catalysts (Cu-Ni2/Al2O3) were prepared using layered double hydroxides (LDHs) as a precursor. Compared with Cu-Ni catalysts synthesized via the conventional impregnation method, the Cu-Ni2/Al2O3catalysts exhibit higher catalytic activity and stability. The results demonstrated that efficient conversion was achieved with isopropanol as the hydrogen donor solvent, a reaction temperature of 180 °C, and a reaction time of 1 h. The yield of GVL reached nearly 90%, with a decrease of approximately only 6% after six consecutive cycles. The Cu-Ni2/Al2O3catalyst proved to be effective for converting biomass-derived LA to GVL, offering a route that not only reduces production costs and environmental impact but also enables efficient biomass-to-energy conversion.

Aqueous hybrid-ion batteries (AHBs) offered various advantages, including low cost, high energy density, high operation voltage, safety, and durability. These characteristics made them an attractive choice for energy storage devices. CuS was a high-capacity cathode material for Al storage. However, the rate performance of CuS under high-voltages conditions was not satisfying. Here, we prepared Co-doped CuS (Co-CuS) nanosheet material with the small band gap by using the ball milling method as the cathode material of aqueous Cu-Al hybrid-ion battery. Co doping can improve the electron transport capacity and provide more active sites. At high current density, Co doping enhances the electrochemical kinetics, operating voltage and electrochemical performance of the materials. The battery exhibits a capacity of 175 mAh g -1 at 2000 mA g -1 and 108 mAh g -1 at 4000 mA g -1 . After 200 cycles of charge and discharge tests, a capacity of 93 mAh g -1 remains. This offers a valuable approach to the development of aqueous Cu-Al hybrid-ion battery electrode materials with good electrochemical performance under high operating voltage and high current conditions.
