Excessive ultraviolet (UV) radiation exposure induces photooxidative stress in plants, leading to severe cell damage. Current packaging films often rely on nonrenewable, petroleum-based UV absorbers, which may pose potential health risks. Calcium lignosulfonate, a natural byproduct derived from the pulp and paper industry, has attracted significant attention as a sustainable alternative to petroleum-based UV absorbers. In this study, calcium lignosulfonate was hydrophobically modified to enhance its compatibility with nonpolar low-density polyethylene (LDPE), and a UV-blocking composite film was subsequently fabricated. The hydrophobic modification significantly increased the water contact angle of calcium lignosulfonate from 5° to 101°. Incorporating the modified calcium lignosulfonate into LDPE improved both the melting point and crystallinity of the polymer. The resulting composite film demonstrated excellent UV-blocking performance, achieving a UV-A blocking rate of 95% and a UV-B blocking rate of 99%, and effectively mitigated photooxidative browning in “Fuji” apples. This film exhibits great potential for anti-photooxidation packaging applications while simultaneously reducing dependence on petroleum-based resources.

The repeated bonding properties of wood adhesives directly influence the service life of wood. The covalent cross-linked networks of conventional thermosetting wood adhesives endow them with excellent performance but suppress the mobility of molecular chains, hindering the repeated bonding after adhesive failure via molecular chain reorganization. Here, we develop a thermoplastic hyperbranched polyurethane wood adhesive, which contains a prepolymer composed of cashew phenol, polyol, and isocyanate groups as the branching chains, a hyperbranched polyester as the core, and lipoic acid with disulfide (S–S) bonds as the terminal groups. When this adhesive breaks or cracks under external force and the broken surfaces are joined together, the molecular chains on both sides of the adhesive converge toward the breakage points driven by the highly branched structure of the hyperbranched polymer, promoting contact between the S–S bonds on both sides. Under heating conditions, dynamic reversible exchange reactions occur, stitching the cracks, and enabling the adhesive to bond repeatedly. Benefiting from this advantage, HPU-LA (100%) can retain more than 85% of its original bonding strength even after undergoing five repeated bonding cycles at 80 °C. This study addresses the issue of resource waste caused by the nonreusability of conventional adhesives as well as has notable research implications for extending the service life of wood.

The profile and bioactivity of phytochemicals in Araiostegia yunnanensis ( Christ ) Cop were investigated. The total flavonoids content in A. yunnanensis is about 84.90 mg/g. By means of HPLC–DAD–ESI-MS, the main flavonoids in A. yunnanensis were tentatively identified as myricetin 3- O -rhamnosylglucoside, eriodictyol 7- O -rutinoside, quercetin 3- O -rutinoside, luteolin-7- O -apiosylglucoside, quercetin 3- O -rhamnosylgalactoside, and luteolin 7- O -glucoside. The extract (0.268 mg/ml total flavonoids) from A. yunnanensis showed very strong superoxide anion radical scavenging potential and reducing power, which are higher than those of rutin (0.25 mg/ml). The extract (0.268 mg/ml total flavonoids) from A. yunnanensis exhibited similar DPPH scavenging activity with rutin (0.25 mg/ml). However, rutin (0.25 mg/ml) showed a significantly higher ABTS radical scavenging effect than that of the extract (0.268 mg/ml total flavonoids) from A. yunnanensis. The methanol extract from A. yunnanensis showed obviously cytotoxic effects on A549 cells and it had no effect against acetylcholinesterase.

The high-value utilization of enzymatic hydrolysis lignin (EHL) is essential for promoting the development of the biorefinery industry. This study investigated the enhancement of the antioxidant activity and ultraviolet (UV) absorption capacity of EHL through treatment with choline chloride (ChCl)-based acidic deep eutectic solvents (DESs). The yield, chemical structure, UV absorption properties, antioxidant activity, and thermal stability of the degraded and regenerated enzymatic hydrolysis lignin (DEHL) were analyzed. The results indicated that treatment with DESs effectively preserved the aromatic structure of EHL. Compared to untreated EHL, DEHL exhibited an increased O/C atomic ratio, a decreased UV transmittance, a significant reduction in weight-average molecular weight (Mw), and a notable increase in phenolic hydroxyl (ArOH) content. Notably, DEHL treated with ChCl–p-toluenesulfonic acid had the lowestMw(1586 g/mol) and the highest ArOH content. Except for the ChCl–malic acid and ChCl–acetic acid systems, all the other five DES treatments enhanced the antioxidant activity of DEHL to varying degrees. Among them, DEHL treated with ChCl–p-toluenesulfonic acid exhibited the highest antioxidant activity, with anIC50 DPPHvalue of 262.87 μg/mL.

Apigenin (Ap) is a bioactive compound, but its application is limited by poor solubility, stability, and bioavailability. This study developed flaxseed gum (FG) and its oligosaccharides (FGOS)-coated zein nanoparticles for Ap delivery (FG/Zein@Ap and FGOS/Zein@Ap). Compared to FG/Zein@Ap, FGOS/Zein@Ap exhibited smaller size, higher zeta potential, encapsulation efficiency (~71.70 %), and loading capacity (~7.66 %) as evidenced by dynamic light scattering, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). FGOS/Zein@Ap also provided better stability of Ap under various conditions, thereby promoting stronger in vitro antioxidant activity, raising bioaccessibility and bioavailability. Molecular docking and molecular dynamics simulations revealed that FGOS interacted more strongly with zein, primarily through hydrogen bonding and van der Waals forces. This interaction provided greater binding stability throughout the simulation period, compared to FG. This study enhances the understanding of FG and FGOS, providing valuable insights for oligosaccharides-based delivery systems for hydrophobic bioactives.

The Camellia seed cake (CSC) is by-product of tea tree ( Camellia oleifera ) oil that rich in proteins and traditionally discarded or used as fertilizers, which would lead to a serious waste of the high-quality resources. In this work, Bacillus subtilis was employed to the submerged fermentation of CSC for production of potential bioactive peptides. After optimization by single-factor experiments and response surface methodology (RSM), the optimal fermentation conditions revealed to be material-to-liquid ratio of 30 g/L, inoculum volume of 19.0 %, and temperature of 35.4 °C, and the peptide production yield reached 11.68 % after RSM optimization. The amino acid composition analysis of CSC hydrolysates (CSCH) showed that CSCH was mainly composed of Tyr, Cys, Gly and Val, and 94.01 % of the peptides contained in the CSCH had a molecular weight of less than 3 kDa. In addition, the CSCH revealed strong antioxidant and tyrosinase inhibition potential in vitro, and the Lineweaver–Burk analysis indicated that CSCH exhibited a reversible competitive inhibition against the tyrosinase. Peptides were supposed to be major components that contribute to the bioactivity of CSCH due to their high contained concentration. The results demonstrated that CSCH could be developed as a new type of pure natural antioxidant and anti-tyrosinase agents used for health-promoting products, and these findings would provide useful information for better transformation and utilization of the CSC by-products.

This study evaluated the effect of cold plasma (CP) on the physicochemical properties and antioxidant capacity of maize. CP treatments were performed using a glow discharge, applying argon and/or nitrogen at 50 W, with different working pressures (75, 100, and 125 Pa) and exposure times (1, 5, and 10 min). The maize samples were analyzed before and after treatments for color, fatty acid value (FAV), malondialdehyde content, superoxide dismutase and catalase activities, total phenol content (TPC), ascorbic acid content, reduced glutathione content, and antioxidant activity. The antioxidant activity was further evaluated during storage (25 °C for 180 days). After treatments, color parameters (brightness, yellowness, and saturation) showed measurable enhancement, while FAV and malondialdehyde content were significantly reduced by 14.95–56.37% and 11.38–43.71%, respectively. The optimal treatment conditions (100 Pa working pressure and 5 min exposure) maximized antioxidant enzyme activities and bioactive compound levels, accompanied by substantial increases in TPC. Under these conditions, maize samples had the highest organic radical scavenging capacities (DPPH), reaching 1.31-fold (argon plasma) and 1.25-fold (nitrogen plasma) that of untreated sample. During storage, all samples subjected to the optimal combined treatment exhibited higher DPPH radical scavenging capacity and ferric reducing antioxidant potential, along with lower FAVs and malondialdehyde contents compared to the untreated sample. Additionally, the DPPH radical scavenging capacity exhibited statistically inverse correlations with both FAV (r2= −0.49) and malondialdehyde content (r2= −0.15), as quantified through Pearson correlation analysis. These findings indicated that glow discharge cold plasma is a potentially effective non-thermal processing technique to enhance bioactive compound accumulation and antioxidant enzyme activity for preserving maize’s physicochemical properties, with possible use in the food industry for sustainable grain preservation strategies, particularly in delaying oxidative deterioration.

TEMPO (2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine-1-oxyl radical)-mediated 6-carboxy β-chitin derivatives (T-chitin) with different carboxylate content were successfully synthesized by controlling the addition level of NaClO as the primary oxidant. The structural and biochemical properties of the derivatives were investigated. The carboxylate contents of the derivatives calculated by electrical conductivity titration were 1.33, 1.68, 1.80, and 2.08 mmol/g, respectively. The yield of T-chitin with carboxylate content of 2.08 mmol/g reached 74.55%. T-chitin exhibited stronger bile acid binding capacities than that of β-chitin. The scavenging ability of T-chitin against hydroxyl radicals improved with increasing concentration, and EC 50 values were below 1.2 mg/mL. All T-chitin exhibited a strong ferrous ion chelating effect. At 8 mg/mL, the chelating effects of T-chitin with carboxylate content of 0.81 mmol/g reached 80.15%. These results showed that T-chitin had good bile acid binding capacity and antioxidant activities and it may be a potential antioxidant in vitro .

The development of biomaterials capable of on-demand delivery holds significant promise for wound therapy. Current research is centered on refining design precision and enhancing structural functionality to achieve effective controlled release of active agents, thereby facilitating wound healing. In this study, a coaxial microfluidic electrospray technique is employed to fabricate microcapsules comprising a black phosphorus (BP)-laden alginate shell and a gelatin methacrylate (GelMA) core. Curcumin nanoparticles (CNPs) and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) are respectively incorporated into the shell and core of the microcapsules. The photothermal performance of the microcapsules contributed to superior sterilization efficacy in the early stages of wound healing, while the growth factors in the core provided robust angiogenic effects during the later stages. These attributes enabled the microcapsules to significantly accelerate wound healing, enhance collagen deposition, and modulate inflammatory responses in a rat wound model, underscoring their potential for clinical application.

Scarring poses a significant challenge in wound healing, especially for chronic wounds like those linked to diabetes. This study developed a dual drug-loaded core-shell fiber scaffold (PSPC) containing curcumin (Cur) in the shell and salvianolic acid B (SAB) in the core via electrospinning to address this challenging issue through synergistic anti-inflammatory and anti-fibrosis efficacy. The PSPC scaffold presented favorable tensile properties (3.67 ± 0.32 MPa of tensile strength and 337.64% ± 32.07% of elongation at break) and suture retention (2.71 ± 0.17 N). In vitro experiments confirmed that this scaffold was biocompatible, supporting cell adhesion and proliferation. Additionally, it also scavenged excessive intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) and promoted macrophage polarization towards the regenerative M2 phenotype. In vivo studies using a mouse diabetic wound model showed that the PSPC scaffold effectively mitigated inflammatory responses, promoted neoangiogenesis, and facilitated epidermal formation and re-epithelialization. More importantly, the scaffold also modulated collagen synthesis, decreased the collagen type I/III ratio, supported the functional regeneration of hair follicles, sebaceous glands, and other skin appendages, then ultimately achieved the goal of chronic diabetic wound healing and scar reduction. The developed dual drug-loaded fiber scaffold integrating anti-inflammatory and anti-fibrosis presents a promising strategy for the anti-scarring treatment of chronic wounds.

Resveratrol (RSV) is a natural polyphenolic compound known for its antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anticancer, and cardioprotective properties. However, the limited water solubility and poor bioavailability of RSV significantly hinder its applications in the food and pharmaceutical industries. To address these challenges, we developed a facile, scalable, and specifically organic-solvent-free method to prepare highly stable and concentrated RSV nanoformulations. By utilizing an ethoxylated hydrogenated castor oil (EHCO) aqueous solution, we successfully dissolve RSV in water at concentrations up to 30 mg/mL. This RSV solution can subsequently be incorporated with hydrogenated lecithin S10 to formulate stable lipid nanoparticles (e.g., 140–180 nm). The entire process is performed under heating and stirring, eliminating the need for organic solvents and ensuring simplicity and high reproducibility. The resulting RSV-CO60@S10 nanoformulations exhibit relatively high encapsulation efficiency (with final RSV concentrations up to 30 mg/mL), long-term stability (exceeding 6 months), preserved antioxidant activity, and effective cellular internalization capabilities that alleviate oxidative stress. Additionally, these nanoparticles exhibit promising therapeutic efficacy on atopic dermatitis in mice. These findings offer valuable insights into the potential utilization of RSV across diverse applications.

Fried foods, valued for their taste and portability, are popular among consumers in our modern, fast-paced, high-pressure lifestyles but raise safety and nutritional concerns, especially with fried meats. These issues have driven increasing interest in the development of natural edible coating films for functional protection. This study developed an edible coating by integrating green tea extract (GTE) into a soy protein isolate (SPI) - carboxymethyl-cellulose (CMC). It can enhance fried meat safety by controlling frying process pollutants and extending shelf life through its antioxidant effects on fat and protein. The physical and functional properties of single (SPI or CMC), hybrid (SPI-CMC), and ternary composite (SPI-CMC-GTE, SCT) edible coating solutions were compared. SPI-CMC showed improved thermal stability due to enhanced hydrophobicity but suffered from poor dispersion due to increased particle size. The infrared, endogenous fluorescence spectrograms, and other physical parameter analysis indicated the presence of interactions between the phenolic active components of GTE and the protein-polysaccharides of SPI-CMC. Additionally, GTE incorporation altered the color of the edible coating solutions and improved the antioxidant activity. Applied to fried meat, coating with SCT demonstrated strong antioxidant activity, thermal stability, and homogeneity. These features help control oil absorption and reduce harmful substances, improving the quality and safety of deep-fried foods.
