Role of Mo and N doping ratios in regulating the zinc storage performance of δ-MnO2: a systematic study from single to co-doping

Shaoyan Huang,Shuling Liu,Sha Fan,Rui Su,Libo Liu,Deliang Tian,Jinbao Li,Jianbo Tong

Manganese-based cathode materials are highly promising for large-scale aqueous zinc-ion batteries (AZIBs) due to their high specific capacity, low cost, and environmental benignity. However, structural instability and severe Mn dissolution at the cathode/electrolyte interface during cycling lead to rapid capacity degradation, which greatly limits their practical application. To address these critical issues, this work proposes an innovative Mo/N cation–anion co-doping strategy for δ-MnO2, which differs from single Mo or N doping and achieves synergistic optimization of structural and electrochemical properties. Specifically, Mo doping effectively modulates the lattice parameters of δ-MnO2 to expand ion diffusion channels, while N doping strengthens the layered framework and suppresses Mn dissolution. Their synergistic effect significantly enhances electronic conductivity and structural robustness compared with single-doped or pristine δ-MnO2 samples. The optimized Mo0.1/N1-δ-MnO2 cathode delivers a high discharge specific capacity of 370.8 mAh g−1 at 0.2 A g−1, retaining 270.0 mAh g−1 after 200 cycles; it also delivers 140.0 mAh g−1 at a high current density of 1 A g−1 and still retains a capacity of 80.6 mAh g−1 after 800 cycles. Combined with in situ EIS, ex situ XRD, and DFT calculations, the underlying mechanism is quantitatively revealed through Mo/N co-doping induced reduction of the Zn2+ diffusion barrier, optimization of ion migration pathways, and regulation of the reversible Zn2+/H+ co-intercalation mechanism. This work provides clear mechanistic insights and establishes a reliable cation–anion co-doping design principle for high-performance Mn-based AZIB cathodes.

One-pot synthesis of AuNCs-MnO2 nanoflakes with peroxidase-like characteristics for pyrophosphatase detection based on Exonuclease III and Cu2+-DNAzymes dual-amplified strategy

Xiaolun Peng,Jiaxin Zheng,Ting Bao,Wei Wen,Xiuhua Zhang,Shengfu Wang

A novel dual-amplified electrochemical biosensor based on Exonuclease III (Exo III) and Cu(II)-dependent DNAzymes (Cu 2+ -DNAzymes) was developed for ultrasensitive electrochemical evaluation of pyrophosphatase (PPase) activity with the help of one-step synthesis of BSA-directed gold nanoclusters-manganese dioxide (AuNCs-MnO 2 ) nanoflakes with peroxidase-like characteristics as a catalytic platform. For biosensor preparation, under the catalytic hydrolysis of the PPase, copper ion (Cu 2+ ) was released from the Cu 2+ -coordinated pyrophosphate ions (Cu 2+ –PPi) complex which was formed by the coordination reaction of copper ion (Cu 2+ ) and pyrophosphate ions (PPi). The released Cu 2+ , acting as an indispensable cofactor, could activate Cu 2+ -DNAzymes to turn on the amplification process and then generated the single-stranded product (S1) that hybridized to the hairpin-type capture probe (HP1). Subsequently, the addition of Exonuclease III (Exo III) enabled the reuse of S1 and produced the final cleavage fragment, which closely linked the functionalized AuNCs-MnO 2 nanoflakes to the electrode surface. The superior peroxidase-like characteristics of nanoflakes provided stable catalytic signal output and realized electrochemical monitoring of PPase activity with a detection limit of 0.0058 mU/mL. Importantly, the biosensor also had a good performance in inhibitors screening of target PPase. The use of AuNCs-MnO 2 nanoflakes instead of natural enzymes combined with DNAzymes amplification strategy offered more possibilities for the detection of various biomolecules.

A novel “turn-on” fluorometric and magnetic bi-functional strategy for ascorbic acid sensing and in vivo imaging via carbon dots-MnO2 nanosheet nanoprobe

Haitao Wang,Xiaokang Na,Shan Liu,Hefei Liu,Lijuan Zhang,Mingzheng Xie,Zicheng Jiang,Fei Han,Yu Li,Shasha Cheng,Mingqian Tan

Ascorbic acid (AA) is an essential vitamin and plays an irreplaceable role in humans’ daily life. Therefore, it is of profound significance to develop effective strategies for AA sensing. Herein, a novel bi-functional sensing strategy was developed by using carbon dots (CDs) and MnO 2 nanosheet as the fluorometric/magnetic signal source. When AA was absence, the fluorescence of CDs was quenched by MnO 2 nanosheet due to the inner filter effect. Neither the fluorescence nor magnetic signal of the nanoprobe can be detected. In the presence of AA, a redox reaction occurred between MnO 2 nanosheet and AA resulting in the generation of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) response Mn 2+ and decomposing of MnO 2 nanosheet structure, thus leading to the recovery of CDs fluorescence. The detection limit of the AA was determined to be 2.89 μM with a linear range of 0–80 μM in fluorescence mode, and detection limit of 0.776 μM with a linear range of 0–80 μM in MRI mode when used transverse relaxation rate as signal. Furthermore, the developed fluorometric/magnetic bi-functional nanoprobe showed good biocompatibility, high response rate, high selectivity towards AA and could be used to analyses AA in real samples. Moreover, in vivo imaging of AA in mice was achieved in magnetic mode. The fluorometric/magnetic bi-function sensor for AA detection was introduced, which provided a novel strategy for sensor design based on CDs.

A Redox-induced Dual-mode Colorimetric and Fluorometric Method based on N-CDs and MnO2 for Determination of Isoniazid in Tablets and Plasma Samples

Kuanxia Ma,Lushan Liang,Xie Zhou,Weiguo Tan,Ou Hu,Zuanguang Chen

We develop a simple hydrothermal method to prepare a novel nitrogen-doped carbon dots (N-CDs) originated from green carbon source Liu-bao tea and ethylene diamine. The N-CDs emits strong and stable blue fluorescence (E m  = 440 nm) under the excitation wavelength of 350 nm with a quantum yield of 35%. And it is used as an excellent fluorescent output for the sensitive and visual dual-mode determination of isoniazid. The fluorescence of N-CDs is “turned off” first by manganese dioxide (MnO 2 ) nanosheets due to inner filter effect, MnO 2 nanosheets can also oxidize TMB (3,3',5,5'- tetramethylbenzidine) to blue oxTMB. Isoniazid, however, can reduce MnO 2 nanosheets to Mn 2+ , turning on the fluorescence again. The color of the solution fades from blue to colorless because less TMB can be oxidized. Under the optimal conditions, the dual-mode method has a satisfying linear relationship ranging from 2.0 to 120.0 μM with a limit of detection of 0.7 μM (S/N = 3). And it has been applied successfully to colorimetric and fluorescent determination of isoniazid in tablets and clinical plasma samples, with recoveries ranging from 94.0% to 102.4%. The properties of N-CDs and MnO 2 nanosheets were thoroughly characterized using TEM, FT-IR, XPS, AFM and fluorescence spectrophotometer, the quenching mechanism was also discussed.

CO Oxidation over Metal Oxide (La2O3, Fe2O3, PrO2, Sm2O3, and MnO2) Doped CuO-Based Catalysts Supported on Mesoporous Ce0.8Zr0.2O2 with Intensified Low-Temperature Activity

Yan Cui,Leilei Xu,Mindong Chen,Chufei Lv,Xinbo Lian,Cai-e Wu,Bo Yang,Zhichao Miao,Fagen Wang,Xun Hu

CuO-based catalysts are usually used for CO oxidation owing to their low cost and excellent catalytic activities. In this study, a series of metal oxide (La2O3, Fe2O3, PrO2, Sm2O3, and MnO2)-doped CuO-based catalysts with mesoporous Ce0.8Zr0.2O2support were simply prepared by the incipient impregnation method and used directly as catalysts for CO catalytic oxidation. These mesoporous catalysts were systematically characterized by X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), N2physisorption, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), energy-dispersed spectroscopy (EDS) mapping, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and H2temperature programmed reduction (H2-TPR). It was found that the CuO and the dopants were highly dispersed among the mesoporous framework via the incipient impregnation method, and the strong metal framework interaction had been formed. The effects of the types of the dopants and the loading amounts of the dopants on the low-temperature catalytic performances were carefully studied. It was concluded that doped transition metal oxides could regulate the oxygen mobility and reduction ability of catalysts, further improving the catalytic activity. It was also found that the high dispersion of rare earth metal oxides (PrO2, Sm2O3) was able to prevent the thermal sintering and aggregation of CuO-based catalysts during the process of calcination. In addition, their presence also evidently improved the reducibility and significantly reduced the particle size of the CuO active sites for CO oxidation. The results demonstrated that the 15CuO-3Fe2O3/M-Ce80Zr20 catalyst with 3 wt. % of Fe2O3showed the best low-temperature catalytic activity toward CO oxidation. Overall, the present Fe2O3-doped CuO-based catalysts with mesoporous nanocrystalline Ce0.8Zr0.2O2solid solution as support were considered a promising series of catalysts for low-temperature CO oxidation.Keywords:CuO-based catalyst;Fe2O3dopant;mesoporous Ce0.8Zr0.2O2solid solution;low-temperature catalytic activity;CO oxidation

Introducing Ratiometric Fluorescence to MnO2 Nanosheet-Based Biosensing: A Simple, Label-Free Ratiometric Fluorescent Sensor Programmed by Cascade Logic Circuit for Ultrasensitive GSH Detection

Daoqing Fan,Changshuai Shang,Wenling Gu,Erkang Wang,Shaojun Dong

Glutathione (GSH) plays crucial roles in various biological functions, the level alterations of which have been linked to varieties of diseases. Herein, we for the first time expanded the application of oxidase-like property of MnO2 nanosheet (MnO2 NS) to fluorescent substrates of peroxidase. Different from previously reported fluorescent quenching phenomena, we found that MnO2 NS could not only largely quench the fluorescence of highly fluorescent Scopoletin (SC) but also surprisingly enhance that of nonfluorescent Amplex Red (AR) via oxidation reaction. If MnO2 NS is premixed with GSH, it will be reduced to Mn2+ and lose the oxidase-like property, accompanied by subsequent increase in SC’s fluorescence and decrease in AR’s. On the basis of the above mechanism, we construct the first MnO2 NS-based ratiometric fluorescent sensor for ultrasensitive and selective detection of GSH. Notably, this ratiometric sensor is programmed by the cascade logic circuit (an INHIBIT gate cascade with a 1 to 2 decoder). And a linear relationship between ratiometric fluorescent intensities of the two substrates and logarithmic values of GSH’s concentrations is obtained. The detection limit of GSH is as low as 6.7 nM, which is much lower than previous ratiometric fluorescent sensors, and the lowest MnO2 NS-based fluorescent GSH sensor reported so far. Furthermore, this sensor is simple, label-free, and low-cost; it also presents excellent applicability in human serum samples.

A three-dimensional hierarchical porous carbon network decorated with MnO2 nanoparticles (HPCM) as an efficient sulfur host for high-performance lithium-sulfur batteries (LSBs)

XiangYu Ding,Rong Gu,PengHui Shi,QunJie Xu,YuLin Min

This paper primarily reports a unique three-dimensional hierarchical porous carbon network structure decorated with MnO 2 nanoparticles through a simple general method without involving any hard templates. Under its synergistic effect on the polysulfide physical entrapment and its strong chemical adsorption of manganese dioxide on polysulfides, the “shuttle effect” produced by polysulfides is reduced effectively and greatly. In addition, this structure could facilitate the infiltration of the electrolyte, shorten the ion transport path, improve the utilization of the active material, and thereby, exhibit remarkable electrochemical performance. The specific capacity of HPCM/S is still maintained at 665 mA h g −1 at a high rate of 1.0 C after 1000 cycles and the capacity decay is only 0.033% per cycle.

Effects of synthesis temperature on ε-MnO2 microstructures and performance: Selective adsorption of heavy metals and the mechanism onto (100) facet compared with (001)

Yuebei Yang,Yaozhong Wang,Xiaofei Li,Chao Xue,Zhi Dang,Lijuan Zhang,Xiaoyun Yi

The heavy-metal adsorbent ε-MnO 2 was produced through a simple, one-step oxidation-reduction reaction at three different synthesis temperatures (25 °C, 50 °C and 75 °C) and their morphology and chemical-physical properties were compared. Of the three materials, MnO 2 -25 had the largest specific surface area and the highest surface hydroxyl concentration. Its optimal performance was demonstrated by batch adsorption experiments with Pb 2+ , Cd 2+ and Cu 2+ . Of the three metals, Pb 2+ was adsorbed best (339.15 mg/g), followed by Cd 2+ (107.50 mg/g) and Cu 2+ (86.30 mg/g). When all three metals were present, Pb 2+ was still absorbed best but now more Cu 2+ was adsorbed than Cd 2+ . In order to explore the mechanism for the inconsistent adsorption order of Cd 2+ and Cu 2+ in single and competitive adsorption, we combined experimental data with density functional theory (DFT) calculations to elucidate the distinct adsorption nature of MnO 2 -25 towards these three metals. This revealed that the adsorption affinity of the (100) facet was superior to (001), and since the surface complexes were also more stable on (100), this facet was most likely determining the adsorption order for the single metals. When the metals were present in combination, Pb 2+ preferentially occupied the active adsorption sites of (100), forcing Cu 2+ to be adsorbed on the (001) facet where Cd 2+ was only poorly bound. Thus, the adsorption behavior was affected by MnO 2 -25 surface chemistry at a molecular scale. This study provides an in-depth understanding of the adsorption mechanisms of the heavy metals on this adsorbent and offers theoretical guidance for production of adsorbent with improved removal efficiency.

High-Performance Flexible Solid-State Supercapacitors Based on MnO2-Decorated Carbon Nanotube Sponge with Ultra-high Capacitance, Long Cycling Life, and Enhanced Mechanical Strength

Hao Cheng,Yana Wang,Jiapeng Zhang,Shuanglu Chen,Hai Qin,Sicheng Yao,Xiaohua Zhang,Zhaohui Yang

Manganese dioxide (MnO2) has emerged as one of the most promising pseudo-capacitive materials with ultra-high theoretical specific capacitance in the energy storage field. Unfortunately, poor electrical conductivity and unfavorable cycling stability greatly impede its application as an excellent electrode material. In this paper, manganese dioxide (MnO2) nanoparticles with well-controlled morphology and density are deposited on the surface of three-dimensional porous carbon nanotube sponge (CNTS) through a controllable electrochemical deposition method. The conductive and flexible CNTS skeleton greatly enhances the conductivity of a MnO2-composed electrode and dramatically improves the cycling stability. The ratio of the pseudo-capacitive contribution to the electrochemical double-layer capacitive contribution can be tuned by MnO2 deposition time. The CNTS@MnO2 composite electrode and assembled symmetric flexible solid-state supercapacitor (FSSC) device using the CNTS@MnO2 composite as electrodes achieved superior volumetric capacitances of up to 4.62 F·cm–3 (at 10 mA·cm–3) and 3.72 F·cm–3 (at 5 mA·cm–3), respectively. Meanwhile, the capacitance preservation remained around 100% after 10,000 rapid charge–discharge cycles. Moreover, the salt-induced Hofmeister effect further increased the tensile strength of the CNTS@MnO2@PVA composite-based FSSC device to as high as 2.02 MPa (with an elongation at the break of 354%), which is almost two times tougher than the initial. Considering the excellent electrochemical and mechanical properties as well as environmental friendliness, our CNTS@MnO2 hybrids have a feasible application prospect in flexible, wearable, and implantable electronic devices.

New synthetic strategy toward a natural enzyme–nanozyme hybrid dual-function nanomotor and its application in environmental remediation

Shuo Gao,Chenzhang Liu,Xiaohan Yang,Ziwei Lan,Min Zuo,Ping Yang,Jia Li

Self-driven micro–nanomotors hold great promise for environmental monitoring and remediation. However, developing a nanomotor with dual functions of colorimetric detection and degradation is still a considerable challenge. In this paper, a novel nanomotor with both selective and catalytic activities was synthesized using a combination of natural enzymes and nanozymes. The nanomotor was modeled on natural mineral halloysite nanotubes (HNTs) and had a unique layered structure. MnO2 in the inner layer was the fuel catalytic unit, which achieved actuation by catalyzing hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) to produce oxygen bubbles, and the diffusion coefficient of the nanomotor could reach 2.65 μm2 s−1 in 5% H2O2 solution. Lac/Fe-BTC@NiFe-LDH in the outer layer was the catalytic functional unit, where Lac/Fe-BTC@NiFe-LDH not only exhibited high peroxide-like active enzyme activity, but also provided abundant active sites for the loading of natural laccase. The integration of natural enzymes and nanozymes provided the material with stronger catalytic activity, which could detect the target pollutant minocycline (MC) in water more sensitively and degrade it efficiently, and provided a new idea for the removal of antibiotics from water.

A nanodrug loading indocyanine green and metformin dually alleviating tumor hypoxia for enhanced chemodynamic/sonodynamic therapy

Ziying Zhang,Weishen Zeng,Ning Guo,Mengnan Ran,Huixuan Gan,Quanxin Wu,Jiehua Xu,Hao Wang,Shisong Han,Yun Liu

As an emerging therapeutic method, the application of sonodynamic therapy (SDT) is hindered by its intrinsic unsatisfactory efficiency, the tumor hypoxia and low tumor specificity. Here, we reported the design of a tumor-targeting multifunctional nanodrug for O 2 -generation/O 2 -economization dually enhanced SDT/chemodynamic therapy (CDT) combination therapy. After the co-encapsulation of sonosensitizer indocyanine green (ICG) and oxidative phosphorylation inhibitor metformin (Met) into hollow MnO 2 (H-MnO 2 ) nanoparticles, ICG/Met@H-MnO 2 @MPN-FA (IMMMF) was conveniently prepared through the formation of metal–phenolic networks (MPNs) between Fe 3+ and folic acid (FA) immobilized tannic acid (TA, TA-FA) onto its surface. In vitro experiments indicated its selective uptake by 4T1 cells via the specific folate receptors-FA interactions. Responding to glutathione (GSH) and the acidic environment, the decomposition of IMMMF led to the release of Mn 2+ and Fe 2+ for enhanced CDT, and ICG for SDT. Furthermore, Met was continuously released to reduce O 2 consumption for enhanced SDT. More importantly, IMMMF catalyzed the endogenous H 2 O 2 into O 2 for further enhanced SDT. Expectedly, both in vitro and in vivo antitumor assays confirmed its satisfactory therapeutic efficiency via CDT/SDT synergistic therapy. Hence, this intelligent sonocatalytic nanoagent emerges as a promising candidate for CDT-enhanced SDT, which also provides a novel strategy for dually alleviating tumor hypoxia with better therapy.

Electrocatalyst and mechanistic elucidation of NiMn-LDH/MnO2(NML)-Fe/C-N composite in 3D electrode system for enhanced degradation of halogenated organic disinfection byproducts

Hongyu Zhang,Fengying Zhang,Antong Shi,Jiahan Yang,Zhehan Tu,Weixin Lin,Xue Bai,Gongduan Fan,Zhuwu Jiang

The design and catalytic potential of materials with simultaneously oxidation and reduction performance remains underexplored, particularly in three-dimensional electrochemical systems. This study developed a carbon nanosheet framework with iron insertion and nitrogen doping, as the skeleton for the deposition of. nickel‑manganese metal mixture. Advanced characterization confirmed that the addition of Fe/C-N skeleton can improve morphology and specific surface, which in turn enhances electronic conductivity and degradation efficiency. Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) and density functional theory (DFT) calculations certify that the Fe/C-N skeleton can enhance the electron supply capacity and thereby accelerate the generation and stabilization of •H and •OH species during the reaction. Under optimal conditions, the system achieved a maximum Chloracetamide (MCAcAm) degradation rate of 68.86 % and good stability. Moreover, in practical tests using industrial wastewater pre-treated with chlorination, the composite showed exceptional efficiency, achieving 86.14 % chemical oxygen demand (COD) and 74.01 % total organic carbon (TOC) removal within 1 h. These results highlight the potential of NiMn-LDH/MnO 2 -Fe/C-N (Name it NML-Fe/C-N) for practical wastewater treatment and provide valuable insights into the design of advanced electrode materials and the mechanisms of electrocatalytic degradation.
