Ammonia (NH 3 ) emissions adversely affect both the environment and human health. The selective catalytic oxidation of NH 3 (NH 3 -SCO) holds great promise for NH 3 abatement; however, there remains a lack of cost-effective NH 3 -SCO catalysts with high activity and N 2 selectivity for practical applications. This study reports on a strategy for constructing an outstanding NH 3 oxidation catalyst via the in situ doping of Cu into CeO 2 nanorods. The designed CeCuO x nanorod catalyst shows remarkable activity, N 2 selectivity, and stability for NH 3 oxidation, achieving complete conversion below 250 °C, with ≈80% N 2 selectivity. The results of various characterization tests and density functional theory (DFT) calculations show that the addition of Cu induces the formation of abundant Cu + -O v -Ce 3+ active sites on the CeO 2 , which are beneficial for the adsorption and activation of reactants. Additionally, in situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy (DRIFTS) confirms that the addition of Cu switches the primary intermediate species of NH 3 oxidation from bidentate nitrate species to monodentate nitrate species, which accelerates the rate-determining step of NH 3 -to-N 2 oxidation. Therefore, doping Cu into CeO 2 greatly improves its NH 3 oxidation activity and N 2 selectivity. This study provides valuable insights into the construction of highly active sites for NH 3 oxidation.

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) exhibit great potential in electrochromic applications owing to their tunable pore structure and abundant redox active sites. Among them, the Cu-based MOF—Cu-TCA (H 3 TCA = 4,4′,4′′-nitrilotribenzoic acid) stands out as an ideal electrochromic material due to its dual redox activity. However, challenges such as particle agglomeration and weak interfacial adhesion between Cu-TCA and substrates hinder its electrochromic performance. Here, we propose a novel interfacial modification strategy combining oxygen plasma (OP) with self-assembled molecules (SAMs) to modify indium-doped tin oxide (ITO) -coated glass substrates. The OP@SAMs layer enhances the adhesion between Cu-TCA and substrates via coordination bonds, and facilitates the formation of uniform Cu-TCA crystals with large ion transport channel size (8.4 Å), large pore volume (0.136 cm 3 ·g −1 ), and high porosity (0.209), to improve the electrochemical cycling durability and accelerate ion transfer, thus achieving superior electrochromic performance. Results demonstrate that the Cu-TCA thin film grown on the OP@SAMs-modified ITO-coated glass substrate exhibits large transmittance modulation (~ 56 %), short coloration/bleaching time (3.7 s/1.0 s), high coloration efficiency (287.2 cm 2 ·C −1 ), and superior cycling stability (1000 cycles). The corresponding Cu-TCA electrochromic device also exhibits outstanding electrochromic performance. This study provides a novel strategy for developing high-performance MOFs-based electrochromic materials and offers valuable references into interfacial engineering for the synthesis of MOFs-based thin films.

In-situ grown graphene nanosheets reinforced nickel-based composites (graphene/Ni composites) always suffer from the trade-off between strength and ductility due to the poor mechanical compatibility and interfacial bonding of reinforcement/matrix components. Microalloying has been established to be an effective strategy in strengthening the graphene/Ni composites; however, the influences of alloying elements on the microstructures and mechanical properties of the composite still remain unclear. This study introduces the Cu element into the Ni matrix for achieving a co-reinforcing effect with the well-dispersed in-situ graphene nanosheets. The experimental investigations and first-principles calculation reveal that a proper concentration of Cu dopant not only improves the bonding strength of the graphene/Ni interface by a good wettability, but also causes an abnormal grain growth in the Ni matrix and thus generates a bimodal structure. Consequently, the in-situ synthesized graphene/Ni composite with 1.5 wt.% Cu exhibits the optimal strength-ductility synergy with a high yield strength, ultimate tensile strength, and fracture elongation of 276 MPa, 575 MPa, and 49.9%, respectively. Compared to the undoped composite, the enhancements in these mechanical parameters reach 32.1%, 21.6%, and 28.9%, respectively. Despite the common strengthening mechanisms, such as the effective load transfer, dislocation strengthening, twin boundary strengthening, solid-solution strengthening, and Orwan strengthening, are contribute to the tensile strength of Cu microalloying graphene/Ni composites, it is determined that the hetero-deformation-induced hardening is playing a critical role. At the same time, the bimodal structure also delays the necking and further suppresses the crack propagation in the Ni matrix, enabling exceptional plasticity.

MicroRNAs (miRNAs), a class of small endogenous nonprotein-coding RNAs, regulate a wide range of biological processes, and their abnormal expressions are related to the growth and development of plants. Thus, a simple, rapid, and highly sensitive assay for miRNA detection is of great significance. In this work, a label-free and ultrasensitive assay for miRNA detection using protein cage nanoparticles has been developed. Apoferritin-encapsulated Cu nanoparticles (Cu-apoferritin) could be immobilized on the electrode through special reaction between amino and carboxyl. Hybridization event between the probe DNA and the target miRNA-159a is confirmed by electrochemical oxidation signal after Cu released into the detection buffer by adjusting the pH. This assay is highly selective and sensitive with a low detection limit of 3.5 fM. Moreover, the developed method can even discriminate single-base mismatched strand between the complementary targets. The effect of abscisic acid on the expression level of miRNA-159a in Arabidopsis thaliana seeds was also investigated.

Sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) are gaining traction for large-scale energy storage due to sodium's abundance and cost efficiency, yet the structural instability and slow ion transport of P2-type cathodes remain critical challenges. This study employs a high-temperature solid-state approach to develop K/Cu co-doped cathodes, demonstrating that co-doping preserves the P2 phase while optimizing lattice parameters to expand interlayer spacing. The reduction in Mn 3+ content suppresses the Jahn-Teller effect and mitigates P2-O2 phase transitions, enhancing structural reversibility. The optimal K 0.05 Na 0.7 Ni 0.23 Mn 0.67 Cu 0.1 O 2 exhibits a high initial discharge capacity of 123.8 mAh·g −1 at 20 mA·g −1 and maintains 96.80 % capacity after 200 cycles at 200 mA·g −1 , outperforming single K-doped samples (89.83 % retention). Kinetic analyses reveal a sodium-ion diffusion coefficient of 1.06 × 10 −10 cm 2 ·s −1 , attributed to enlarged interlayers and reduced charge transfer resistance. In-situ XRD confirms minimal (002) peak shift (0.42°) during cycling, validating structural stability from K + -pinned interlayers. DFT calculations indicate that Cu doping induces spin-polarized half-metallic behavior, enhancing electron conductivity by increasing density of states near the Fermi level. This work presents a “dual-functional co-doping” strategy in which K + stabilizes interlayers and Cu 2+ optimizes the electronic structure, thereby simultaneously suppressing phase transitions and enhancing ion/electron transport. The proposed approach provides a scalable route for developing high-performance SIBs cathodes, which is crucial for advancing affordable and durable energy storage solutions.

Background Rhodamine B (RhB) poses a significant threat to aquatic ecosystems. While Fenton oxidation process is promising approach for RhB degradation, the conventional Fenton reaction has the narrow pH range and poor reusability. To overcome these, this study developed Fenton-like system with Fe-Cu/HZSM-5 catalyst for effective RhB degradation. Methods A series of Fe x Cu 5-x /HZSM-5 catalysts (x represents the molar ratio of Fe to Cu) were prepared by impregnation. These catalysts were integrated with H 2 O 2 to construct Fenton-like system for the degradation of RhB. The catalysts were characterized by XRD, NH 3 -TPD, XPS, FT-IR, and N 2 adsorption-desorption at low temperature techniques. Significant findings Among the tested catalysts, Fe 3 Cu 2 /HZSM-5 exhibited optimal performance, achieving near-complete RhB degradation (∼100%) under the condition of 45 °C, 5.3 mM/L H 2 O 2 , 3.0 g/L catalyst dosage, and broad pH range (2–5). Mechanistic studies confirmed that hydroxyl radicals (·OH) were the primary oxidants responsible for RhB degradation in Fenton-like system. Under ·OH attacking, RhB underwent a series of reactions such as N-deethylation and disruption of the conjugated structure and was eventually mineralized into CO 2 and H 2 O. Overall, a novel Fe-Cu/HZSM-5 catalyst was developed to address the limitations of the traditional Fenton reaction, providing valuable insights for future research in this field.

Phenol, an essential feedstock widely used in manufacturing and chemical industries, inevitably results in the discharge of phenol-laden wastewater. To enhance the phenol-degradation efficiency of Fe-based amorphous alloys, a novel atomic-scale fabrication approach for Fe-Cu galvanic couples is proposed, enabling the rapid and uniform formation of micro/nano Fe-Cu structures on the surface of Fe-based alloys with significant improvement in the catalytic activity towards phenol. Micron/nano Fe-Cu couples can be fabricated within 15 s at 45 °C. Phenol degradation experiments reveal that the pristine amorphous alloy exhibits a 40 min hatching period before the phenol removal process, and it exhibits a kinetic constant (kobs) of 0.1596 min−1after the hatching period, under conditions of 50 °C, 0.5 g/L catalytic loading, 10 mmol/L H2O2, and pH = 3 towards a 50 mg/L phenol solution. With the micro/nano Fe-Cu galvanic couples, thekobsvalue markedly increased to 2.23~2.36 min−1under identical conditions except for 3 mmol/L H2O2, corresponding to approximately a 14-fold improvement. This cost-effective and time-efficient atomic-scale fabrication strategy offers a promising platform for the development of next-generation catalytic alloys and functional materials.

In this research, GO/Cu/Cr-MOF composites were fabricated via a dissolution-heat method. The GO/Cu/Cr-MOF composite was characterized using FT-IR, SEM, XRD, and EDS techniques. The characterization results confirmed the presence of Cu and Cr metallic elements in the composite, and FT-IR analysis demonstrated that the organic ligands were successfully coordinated with the metal centers. The characterized GO/Cu/Cr-MOF composite was employed in the removal study of fleroxacin and levofloxacin. The results demonstrate that the addition of 40 mg of the composite to a 40-ppm levofloxacin solution achieved a removal efficiency of 95.9% within 5 h. Likewise, adding the same amount of composite to a 20-ppm fleroxacin solution resulted in a maximum removal efficiency of 98.2% over the same time period. The experimental data were examined using both the kinetic model and the isotherm models. The results revealed that the adsorption of both antibiotics onto the GO/Cu/Cr-MOF composite followed the pseudo-second-order kinetic model and was most accurately represented by the Langmuir isotherm. The experimental results indicate that the adsorption capacity of the GO/Cu/Cr-MOF composite for fleroxacin and levofloxacin reaches its maximum within the pH range of 6 and 8.

Al powder faces high expectations for its use as fuel due to its high energy density. However, it is covered with a dense Al 2 O 3 layer, which has a high melting point. Thus, the powder has poor heat release and combustion performance. In this work, Cu/Al energetic nanocomposites are fabricated using a simple replacement reaction between Al and CuF 2 solution. CuF 2 ionizes F − to remove the Al 2 O 3 layer on the Al powder surface and ionizes Cu 2+ to provide a Cu source for deposition. The as-obtained Cu/Al nanocomposites have a typical strawberry-like core/shell structure. Cu/Al nanocomposites with different Cu contents can be obtained by simply adjusting the molar ratio of CuF 2 to Al. The design of these Cu/Al nanocomposites can improve the intensity, speed, and completion of the heat release of Al powder. The quantity of Cu strongly influences the heat release magnitude. The maximum heat release of the Cu/Al energetic nanocomposites with 5% Cu content reaches 24.7 kJ g −1 , which is approximately 1.8 times that of raw Al. The heat release mechanism of the proposed Cu/Al nanocomposite is based on the oxidation reaction phenomenon. The as-obtained Cu/Al nanocomposites are expected to have wide application prospects in solid energetic materials.

Electrochemical water splitting is a very prospective technique to obtain the green hydrogen fuel . The oxygen evolution reaction becomes a limitation owing to the multiple electron transfer process. Thereby, a lot of attention is paid on the development of noble-metal free electrocatalysts for boosting the water oxidation process . The heterostructure of Mn 3 O 4 nanoparticles on Cu(OH) 2 nanowire arrays is fabricated, which exhibits an electrocatalytic activity close to RuO 2 . Compared with the single (hydro)oxides, the largely improved performance of the heterostructure towards water oxidation can be attributed to the enhanced charge transfer by the electronic interaction across the interface and the increased active sites for the rational combination of different active species . This work can be valuable for highlighting the role of heterostructure in the design and development of novel transition metal-based electrocatalysts for water oxidation.

Objectives To investigate the effect of zero-valent iron and copper (Fe/Cu) micro-electrolysis on dark fermentative hydrogen production from glucose by a mixed bacterial consortium and the possible mechanisms of increasing hydrogen yield. Results Compared to zero-valent iron and activated carbon (Fe/C) micro-electrolysis, Fe/Cu micro-electrolysis could increase hydrogen yield by 32.2%, hydrogen production potential by 27.1%, and the maximum hydrogen production rate by 62.0%. Meanwhile, the number of ferrous ions released into the liquid phase with Fe/Cu micro-electrolysis was about 27.0% greater than that released by Fe/C micro-electrolysis, because the dispersion of copper on the surface of iron could markedly improve electrochemical corrosion activity. Metabolic analysis revealed that Fe/C micro-electrolysis promoted acetate formation, which may have been responsible for the observed improvement in fermentative hydrogen production. Further investigation indicated that Fe/Cu micro-electrolysis increased the activity of hydrogenases and stimulated the expression of the [FeFe]-hydrogenase gene. Conclusion Fe/Cu micro-electrolysis is better than Fe/C micro-electrolysis or Fe corrosion alone for dark fermentative hydrogen production.

The formation of Li dendrites and dead Li, which causes short circuits, continuous side reactions, low Coulombic efficiency (CE) and thermal runaway, severely hinders the development of anode-free lithium metal batteries . Here, Cu-based current collector with super-three-dimensional lithiophilic modification layer is developed by the pyrolysis of resorcinol formaldehyde on 3D engineered copper mesh (a-RF@3D CM). The modification layer, consisting of highly dispersed CuO x sites in the O-containing defective carbon, together with the super-three-dimensional microstructure exhibits excellent lithiophilicity and capability to effectively reduce the nucleation overpotential, accommodate the uniform dendrite-free lithium deposition, promote stable and inorganic-rich solid electrolyte interphase formation, and improve the cycle stability. As a result, the a-RF@3D CM current collector exhibits reduced nucleation overpotential of 14.2 mV and prolonged cycling life over 400 cycles with average CE >98.5%. In the LiFePO 4 ||a-RF@3D CM anode-free cell, average CE of 99.50% and capacity retention of 60.66% are successfully achieved after 100 cycles. Meanwhile, average CE 99.78% and capacity retention of 64.43% are successfully achieved in LiFePO 4 ||Li@a-RF@3D CM cell (N/P = 1.6) after 200 cycles. The work provides feasible way to realize the fabrication of anode-free lithium metal batteries and also enhance the understanding of solid electrolyte interface evolution and regulation strategy of Li plating–stripping in advanced Li metal-based batteries.
