In this paper, explain a new relationships between Bi 3+ content, the phase crystal, microstructure and conductivity for Sm and Bi co-doped Ce 0.8− x Sm 0.2 Bi x O 1.9−1/2 x ( x = 0, 0.05, 0.1, 0.15, 0.2) electrolytes prepared by co-precipitation method. The XRD patterns showed that this compounds exhibit a fluorite-type cubic structure after the samples calcined at 700 °C for 4 h and the cell volumes of increased when the Bi content increased. In addition, for the samples sintered at 1400 °C for 4 h, the Bi doping improves the relative density, the grain size and the average thermal expansion coefficient (TEC). More in details, the relative density and TEC increase with the Bi content. Form the AC impedance spectroscopy measurements, the conductivity of the sintered samples is found to improve with the increasing of Bi content (for x ≤ 0.15), which is ascribed to the increasing of the number of oxygen ion vacancies and the increase in the unit cell volume. However, the conductivity decreases when the Bi content is further increased (0.15 < x ≤ 0.2), which is ascribed the reduction of the number of free oxygen vacancies. The highest conductivity at 800 °C is 5.6 × 10 −2 S/cm and the activation energy is 0.83 eV for Ce 0.65 Sm 0.2 Bi 0.15 O 1.825 , indicating that this would be a promising electrolyte for the intermediate temperature-solid oxide fuel cell applications.

A Ni-rich layered oxide, one promising cathode for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs), exhibits the advantages of low cost and high capacity but suffers from rapid capacity loss due to bulk structural instability and surface side reactions. Herein, a simple synchronous dual-modification strategy with Zr4+ doping and CeO2 nanowelding is proposed to address such issues. Utilizing the migration energy difference of Zr and Ce ions in layered structures, one-step high-temperature sintering of LiNi0.8Co0.1Mn0.1O2 particles with Zr and Ce nitrate distributions enables simultaneous doping of Zr ions in the bulk and CeO2 surface modification. Therein, Zr ions in the bulk occupying the Li sites can improve the Li+ diffusion rate and stabilize the crystal structure, while CeO2 on the surface provides nanowelding between the grain boundaries and resistance to electrolyte erosion. Theoretical calculations and a series of structure/composition characterizations (i.e., neutron scattering, in situ X-ray diffraction, etc.) validated the proposed strategy and its role in stabilizing the Ni-rich cathodes. The synergistic effect of Zr4+ doping and CeO2 nanowelding enables an impressive initial capacity of 187.2 mAh g–1 (2.7–4.3 V vs Li/Li+) with 86.1% retention after 200 cycles at 1 C and rate capabilities of 146.6 and 127.3 mAh g–1 at 5 and 10 C, respectively. Upon increasing the testing temperature to 60 °C, the dual-modified Ni-rich cathode exhibits an initial discharge capacity of 203.5 mAh g–1 with a good retention of 80.8% after 100 cycles at 0.5 C. The present strategy utilizing the migration energy difference of metal ions to achieve synchronous bulk doping and surface modification will offer fresh insights to stabilize layered cathode materials for LIBs, which can be widely used in other kinds of batteries with various cathode materials.

This research engineers a high-performance superhydrophobic composite system by synergizing an Al arc-sprayed bond coat with a nanostructured CeO 2 topcoat deposited via solution precursor plasma spraying (SPPS). The objective was to utilize the intrinsic micro-roughness of the arc-sprayed layer to stabilize a Cassie–Baxter wetting state without organic modifiers. Optimization of the SPPS process identified the critical parameters for achieving a hierarchical topography: a standoff distance of 7 cm, a liquid feed rate of 42 rpm, a transverse speed of 500 mm/s, and a total of 4 spray passes. This optimized protocol leveraged the “shadowing effect” of the Al bond coat (Ra ~ 13µm), resulting in a 90% reduction in the required spray passes compared to conventional coatings on smooth substrates. Microstructural analysis confirmed the formation of a phase-pure CeO 2 topcoat with a refined crystallite size of 81 nm. The resulting hierarchical architecture yielded a water contact angle of 151° and a contact angle hysteresis of 2°. Mathematical modeling via the Cassie–Baxter equation quantified a liquid–solid contact area fraction of 0.04, indicating that 96% of the droplet base was supported by trapped air pockets. Electrochemical performance evaluated via potentiodynamic polarization and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy after 96 hours of immersion in 3.5 wt.% NaCl demonstrated superior durability. The Al-CeO 2 composite exhibited a 128% increase in corrosion resistance and a 50.5% reduction in the corrosion rate compared to the bare Al bond coat. While the single-layer benchmark system experienced a 95.5% reduction in coating resistance due to electrolyte infiltration, the optimized Al-composite restricted degradation to 40%. Surface chemistry analysis via x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy revealed that the transition to superhydrophobicity is governed by the spontaneous adsorption of airborne volatile organic compounds, ensuring chemical stability up to 450°C. These results establish a robust, industrially scalable manufacturing route for protective coatings in aggressive marine environments.

Ammonia is a promising energy carrier for overcoming hydrogen storage and transportation challenges. Although platinum (Pt) exhibits high activity for the electrocatalytic ammonia oxidation reaction (AOR), particularly on the Pt(100) facet, single-component Pt catalysts suffer from competitive adsorption between surface hydroxyl species and ammonia-derived intermediates. To address this limitation, we designed and synthesized a composite catalyst (Pt/CeO 2 /XC) featuring abundant Pt–CeO 2 interfaces. Oxygen-philic CeO 2 preferentially adsorbs surface hydroxyls, while the formation of interfacial Pt–O–Ce linkages modulates the electronic structure of Pt, optimizing the adsorption and coupling of nitrogen-containing intermediates. This dual-functional interfacial strategy enhances intrinsic activity, with Pt/CeO 2 /XC exhibiting a specific activity 15.8 times higher than that of commercial Pt/C, ranking among the most active AOR electrocatalysts reported to date. When employed as the anode catalyst in a direct ammonia fuel cell (DAFC), Pt/CeO 2 /XC delivers a peak power density of 32.3 mW/cm 2 . This work elucidates the critical role of metal-support interfacial regulation and electronic structure modulation in governing AOR performance, providing general design principles for high performance ammonia oxidation catalysts.

Palladium single-atom catalysts show exceptional catalytic performance in nitrile butadiene rubber (NBR) hydrogenation due to their unique unsaturated coordination environments. However, the hydrogenation activity and atomic efficiency are seriously limited by inherent instability of undercoordinated Pd δ+ sites and poor support structure, leading to decreased hydrogenation degree and cycling stability. In this work, a novel single-atom palladium catalysts was developed, where undercoordinated single-atom Pd δ+ sites are steadily anchored onto CeO 2- x nano-islands supported by SiO 2 (Pd 1 /CeO 2- x /SiO 2 ). The strong metal-interaction of CeO 2- x nano-islands immobilize the undercoordinated Pd δ+ sites to enhance adsorption of olefin bonds in NBR, while SiO 2 promotes mass transfer diffusion of NBR and atomic efficiency of palladium. The Pd 1 /CeO 2- x /SiO 2 thus achieves an unprecedented hydrogenation degree of up to 99.8% without decrease over a 10-runs stability test in selective hydrogenation of NBR, outperforming previously state-of-the-art catalysts. Consequently, this work will offer a new strategy for single-atom catalysts to achieve high steady-state activity in selective hydrogenation.

We synthesized a highly efficient Ni/CeO 2 -B catalyst with a unique Haystack-like morphology for DRM. • The haystack-like morphology of CeO 2 is responsible for enhanced oxygen mobility, Ni dispersion, and strong metal-support interactions. • The Ni/CeO 2 -B catalyst demonstrated remarkable CH 4 and CO 2 conversion rates. • The prepared catalyst maintained stable performance over 40 h of continuous operation. In this study, a unique Ni-based CeO 2 catalyst (Ni/CeO 2 -B) of haystack-like morphology was prepared for dry reforming of methane (DRM). The physicochemical properties of the synthesised catalysts were examined by FTIR, SEM, TEM, XRD, Raman spectra, XPS, BET, CO 2 -TPD, O 2 -TPO, ESR, TGA/DSC, and in situ DRIFT spectroscopy. The Ni/CeO₂-B catalyst exhibited a unique haystack-like morphology, resulting in high surface area, enhanced surface basicity, abundant oxygen vacancies, and improved Ni dispersion. The Ni/CeO₂-B catalyst exhibited excellent CO₂ and CH₄ conversions of 78% and 95%, respectively, at 800 °C, as well as excellent thermal stability for 40 h of operation. The Ni/CeO₂-B catalyst exhibited a high concentration of oxygen vacancies and enhanced basicity, which provide additional active sites for the adsorption and activation of CO₂ and CH₄ during the DRM. In situ DRIFTS spectra in combination with XPS, ESR, and catalytic results suggest that the redox-active Ni/CeO₂-B catalyst promotes CO₂ activation and improves anti-coking during DRM activity. In order to facilitate the scale-up of DRM technology, this study offers insightful information for the synthesis of advanced catalytic materials to improve syngas formation. Porous semiconductor heterojunctions offer a powerful platform for enhancing charge separation and photocatalytic efficiency; however, achieving robust visible-light-driven antibacterial and antifouling performance remains challenging. Herein, a foam-structured CeO 2 /(ZnOₓS y )ₙ heterojunction (Ce/(ZOS) n ) was rationally engineered via a coffee-extract-assisted synthesis-blending strategy to overcome the limited visible-light activity of CeO 2 and the weak hydroxyl radical (•OH) generation of ZnO and ZnS. Among the series, Ce/(ZOS) 2 exhibits optimal performance, achieving near-complete (∼100%) inactivation of both Gram-negative ( Pseudomonas aeruginosa ) and Gram-positive ( Staphylococcus aureus ) under visible-light irradiation (λ ≥ 420 nm, 12 h). Notably, real sea immersion tests over 60 days demonstrate almost no macrofouling on Ce/(ZOS) 2 , in stark contrast to severe biofouling on control samples. Photoelectrochemical analyses reveal that Ce/(ZOS) 2 possesses the lowest charge-transfer resistance, highest photocurrent density, and prolonged carrier lifetime (9.23 ns), confirming efficient charge separation. Its optimized bandgap (2.85 eV) and n-n quasi-Type-II heterojunction facilitate directional electron transfer and suppress recombination. Electron paramagnetic resonance further confirms significantly enhanced generation of •O 2 − and •OH radicals, driving rapid oxidative bacterial inactivation. Overall, this work establishes foam-structured Ce/(ZOS) n heterojunctions as highly efficient, visible-light-responsive materials, offering a promising and scalable strategy for next-generation marine antibiofouling and antibacterial coatings.

In this study, PdAu nanoparticles anchored on CeO 2 hybridized hollow mesoporous carbon sphere (PdAu-CeO 2 /OHCS) has been fabricated by nanocasting, low temperature oxidation, and wet chemistry approach. As-prepared PdAu-CeO 2 /OHCS catalyst exhibits excellent catalytic activity for the formic acid dehydrogenation (FAD) without additives, showing a high initial turnover frequency (TOF) of 4104 h −1 at 298 K and initial superior TOF of 15988 h −1 at 323 K. This outstanding catalytic activity can be attributed to the fact that low-temperature oxidation can enhance the hydrophilicity of HCS and increase abundant oxygen-containing functional groups, facilitating the formation and uniform distribution of smaller PdAu nanoparticles. Moreover, the introduction of CeO 2 hybridizes with OHCS, which further modulates the electron structure of the catalyst, thus further promoting the activity of FAD. This work provides a feasible idea into fabricating efficient heterogeneous catalysts for FAD. Graphical PdAu nanoparticle anchored on CeO 2 hybridized hollow mesoporous carbon sphere has been fabricated by nanocasting, low temperature oxidation, and wet chemistry approach. As-prepared catalyst exhibits excellent catalytic activity for formic acid dehydrogenation, showing a high initial turnover frequency (TOF) of 15988 h −1 at 323 K.

Polytetrafluoroethylene/Polyetheretherketone (PTFE/PEEK) corrosion-resistant coatings were prepared on the surface of 7075 aluminum alloy by the electrostatic powder spraying technique (EPST). To achieve a denser microstructure and improved hydrophobic properties, we introduced nano-CeO2to fill the coatings and analyzed the mechanism of its effect on the different coating structures. The corrosion resistance of the coatings was evaluated using NaCl immersion. The results indicate that nano-CeO2enhances the coatings by filling local defects and forming a denser microstructural barrier, thereby improving the hydrophobicity and corrosion resistance of the composite coatings. Additionally, the addition of nano-CeO2to the 20 µm PTFE/PEEK composite coating increases structural heterogeneity and pore defects, reduces coating densification, and facilitates the penetration of corrosive media, thereby weakening the barrier capability of the coating. However, in the 50 µm PTFE/PEEK/CeO2composite coating, nano-CeO2particles fill part of the pre-existing defects and improve coating densification, thereby increasing the resistance to the penetration of corrosive media through the coating. This enhanced barrier effect delays the contact of corrosive media with the substrate and improves the corrosion resistance of the coating. In this study, the 50 μm PTFE/PEEK/CeO2composite coating with a nano-CeO2content of 0.5 wt.% exhibited the best corrosion resistance, with a corrosion current density of 8.02 × 10−4μA·cm−2, while |Z|0.01Hzremained above 106Ω·cm2after 720 h of immersion in NaCl solution.

Rational regulation of the interface and realization of synergistic electrocatalytic activity in functionalized structure represent a key strategy for developing high-selectivity electrochemical sensors toward emerging environmental pollutants. In this work, a hierarchical Ti 3 C 2 /Co@CeO 2 -NCNT composite electrode was rationally designed and fabricated via defect and interface engineering, and employed innovatively as a high-performance sensing platform for trace-level detection of bithionol (BT) in aquatic environments. In this architecture, the 2D conductive Ti 3 C 2 framework effectively disperses and stabilizes Co@CeO 2 -NCNT components, providing abundant pathways for efficient electron transfer. The as-obtained sensor delivers outstanding analytical performance, including a low limit of detection 2.82 nM, a wide linear range of 5 nM to 9 μM, and excellent stability and practicality in real water samples with satisfactory recoveries of 97.3% - 104.4%. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations confirm that p-d-f orbital hybridization greatly enhances BT adsorption, interfacial charge-transfer kinetics, and overall catalytic efficiency. This work not only provides a novel and sensitive electrochemical platform for BT detection, but also offers valuable guidance for the targeted design of advanced electrocatalytic materials for specific environmental pollutants by clarifying the synergistic mechanism of interface engineering and defect modulation.

Conventional Ni-based catalysts often exhibit limited metal-support interactions (MSI) and limited density of active interfacial sites, which significantly restrict their low-temperature activity for CO 2 methanation. In this study, we report a binary inverse-structured CeO 2 /Ni catalyst synthesized via a facile one-pot sol-gel method. The optimal 10% CeO 2 /Ni catalyst achieved a CO 2 conversion of 85.4 ± 0.5% with 98.8 ± 0.2% CH 4 selectivity at 200 °C under a gas hourly space velocity of 12,000 mL·g cat −1 ·h −1 during 150 h long-term stability test, substantially outperforming the conventional 10% Ni/CeO 2 catalyst. Comprehensive characterizations collectively indicate that the enhanced low-temperature performance arises from synergistic effects induced by the inverse architecture. The MSI facilitates hydrogen spillover from metallic Ni to CeO 2 , while enriched interfacial oxygen vacancies provide abundant active sites for CO 2 adsorption and activation. In-situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy results further suggest that the inverse structure steers the reaction toward a highly efficient formate-mediated pathway. This work highlights structural inversion as a facile and effective design strategy to reinforce MSI, offering a promising approach for developing high-efficiency low-temperature CO 2 hydrogenation catalysts. A Fe 3 O 4 -VB 2 @CeO 2 ternary nanozyme was designed for METH detection. • Selective recognition of METH over HER/MOR via –NH and electrostatic attraction. • The sensor shows a low LOD of 3.4 ng mL −1 and a wide linear range. • It enables on-site colorimetric detection in serum with good specificity. Selective detection of methamphetamine (METH) over other illicit drugs is essential for forensic analysis and clinical screening, yet conventional methods are expensive, complex, and unsuited for on-site use. Herein, we developed a colorimetric platform based on a Fe 3 O 4 -VB 2 @CeO 2 ternary composite nanozyme for specific METH recognition. The nanozyme was synthesized via a two-step solvothermal method, where Fe 3 O 4 acts as the magnetic core, riboflavin (VB 2 ) serves as an electron mediator, and CeO 2 provides abundant catalytic active sites. Mechanistic studies (FT-IR, XPS, Zeta potential) suggest that METH is adsorbed onto the nanozyme surface through a combination of electrostatic interactions and other non-covalent forces, potentially including hydrogen bonding and π–π stacking interactions. This adsorption appears to modulate the surface chemistry and interfacial electron transfer dynamics, which may contribute to the suppressed generation of hydroxyl radicals (·OH) and the reduced peroxidase (POD)-like activity of the nanozyme. Under optimized conditions, the colorimetric signal shows an excellent linear relationship with the logarithm of METH concentration from 0.005 to 12 μg/mL, with a detection limit of 3.4 ng/mL. The sensor exhibits high specificity for METH, with negligible response to heroin (HER) or morphine (MOR), and shows negligible interference from various metal ions, amino acids, metabolites, and serum components. This work presents a visual strategy for on-site rapid METH detection and offers a plausible mechanistic interpretation of nanozyme inhibition based on indirect evidence.
